Hello!

I have been reading through a book called Vitamin N by Richard Lourv, which encourages parents to get out in nature more and experience the beauty, the sights and sounds of it. During the warm weather in February, I was really able to take advantage of this. My boys and I went out picking loquats; walking through the railway trails; seeing the cherry and avocado trees blossom and know that Spring was in the air. We even managed to start a vegetable garden!

In our Winter issue we featured a young boy named Connor who was growing his hair in honor of his father who was suffering from cancer. Connor will be participating in the St. Baldrick’s day event. Unfortunately, Connor’s father passed away in December, unable to see him complete his fundraiser but we want to honor Connor here and share the link and Facebook page that you might wish to donate to this worthy cause. If you missed this article visit our website www.mybermudaparent.com to review our previous articles.

Childproof

YOUR HOME

As a parent, from the moment your child is born you begin to worry about his or her safety. Keeping a child safe from harm is not always easy. The average household is full of potential hazards that pose a threat to a young child. However, all it takes is a few simple alterations to make your home safe. By taking these measures, you can significantly reduce the amount of accidents your children experience in their early years.

Step 1: Think Like a Child

Childproofing means locking, securing, relocating or removing anything that may pose a potential danger to a child. To understand these dangers, get down to a child’s level to see the room from his or her perspective. Take a good look at items on the floor, at eye level, and at higher items that may pose a threat or entice a child to explore. Make a list of your childproofing priorities.

Step 2: Banish Hazards from the Bathroom

Many substances found in the bathroom are potentially unsafe. Even substances that are considered “safe” for adults, such as vitamins or aspirin, can be toxic and/or lethal to children. Keep all medications, topical ointments and creams, sharp beauty tools and cleaning products locked in the medicine cabinet or in a lockbox with a key. Place bath safe tread on the bottom of the bathtub to prevent falling. Turn down your water heater to 120 degrees F or below to prevent scalding young skin. Purchase toilet locks and keep the lid closed when not in use.

Step 3: Create a Kid-Proof Kitchen

When cooking, turn pot handles to the back of the stove. Install “childresistant” locks on all cabinets within the child’s reach. Install dial covers on burner controls and special locks on the oven and refrigerator for added protection. Additionally, remove all cleaning fluids and agents from lower drawers and storage areas.

Step 4: Practice Fire Safety

Install smoke detectors on all levels of your home, including the basement and garage. Check and change the batteries regularly. When deciding where children should sleep, make sure one window is easily accessible. Use fire safety stickers from your local fire department to identify windows where a child may be sleeping.

Step 5: Make Windows Safer

A keyed sash lock allows you to control when windows are raised. This security measure will not only prevent your child from opening a window, but also protects your family against intrusions. Install the lock according to the manufacturer’s instructions using a drill, grommet and a screwdriver. Test the window lock. The window should be secure and lock easily in either position. Install blind cord wind-ups to keep window cords out of reach.

Helpful Tip

If your home was built before 1978, test the exterior with a lead testing kit to determine whether it contains any lead- based paint. Lead poses a serious health hazard, especially to children and pregnant women. To protect yourself and your family, avoid scraping or sanding lead-based paint.

8 little ones

3

Very common household items that are generally considered non-poisonous can harm a child if taken in large quantities. Examples include mouthwash and cosmetics.

Step 6: Safeguard Other Areas of the Home

Make sure you don’t neglect the rest of your home when childproofing. Corner and edge guards are ideal for sharp edges on furniture and counters. To prevent dangerous falls, use a certified child or pet safety gate at the top and bottom of stairs and around fireplaces. If you’re concerned the gaps between railings on stairs or at landings are wide enough for a child to crawl through and want to block them, install special mesh guards designed for this purpose. To prevent your child from accessing dangerous objects and from hurting their hands and fingers, install “child-resistant” locks and/or special slam stoppers on drawers, cabinets and doors within the child’s reach.

Additionally, use brackets to attach portable shelves and TV sets and stands to the wall to prevent them from falling or being pulled onto children.

Step 7: Ensure Electrical/Door Safety

Install sturdy plug protectors on all electrical outlets and knob covers on doors to protect your children from reaching potentially unsafe areas such as utility rooms, bathrooms and

the garage. Keep all electrical and phone cords bundled and out of reach using a cord and cable bundler.

Step 8: Childproof the Exterior of Your Home

Never leave your child outdoors unattended. For added protection, make sure your home’s exterior fencing and railings are free of sharp or jagged edges, splinters, and protruding nails. Remove peeling paint from your home’s siding with a paint scraper. Fill holes with concrete or asphalt in your driveway, and fix or replace decaying steps and deck boards that might cause a child to trip and fall. Have a first aid kit handy at all times.

Great job! You’ve completed tasks necessary to reduce your child’s likelihood of serious injury.

SCARS

“Sexual abuse has a deleterious impact on a child’s sense of self. SCARS have provided us with a guide to facilitate conversations about self-worth and sexual abuse. Such discussions are paramount in promoting awareness and prevention of child sexual abuse.”

s parents and caregivers it’s important for us to help our children feel save and protected. In this three part series, we share conversation suggestions compiled by SCARS for parents and caregivers. Some topics may be difficult but, they are necessary. As adults, it’s our responsibility to protect our children and prevent child sexual abuse.

For children ages 4 to 8 years

At this age, it’s important for children to know they are valued and loved. This builds a child’s self-esteem and confidence, and reinforces the knowledge that they are special. Below are discussion suggestions for children in this age group. Children need to know that as parents and caregivers we are listening, and that we value what they say.

Discussion questions:

1. Do you know you are special?

2. What is love; who loves you, do you feel loved?

3. Do you know your body is private and belongs to you?

4. Your body parts have proper names. Discuss these with your child. Avoid pet names for private parts. Teach children the proper names - mouth, breasts, vagina, penis, buttocks.

10 BY ALICIA RESNIK little ones

5. Your private parts are private and so are other peoples.

6. Respect other people’s bodies. Do you understand what this means?

7. You shouldn’t feel forced to give affection and you shouldn’t force other people to give you affection.

8. You can say ‘No’ when someone you know and love makes you feel uncomfortable, even an adult. NO means NO! It’s important to tell someone about any confusing feelings you have.

9. Respect when others say NO. NO means NO! Does this make sense to you?

10. Listen to your ‘uh oh feelings’. Pay attention to butterflies in your stomach.

11. Explain the difference to your child between a surprise and a secret. Give examples such as: surprises make everyone happy (surprise parties, birthday presents, a special outing, crafts made at school). Secrets can be hurtful, scary, cause sadness or anger. (Being bribed, threatened, told not to tell, and/or being coerced into not telling). Tell someone you trust when a secret or surprise makes you uncomfortable.

12. Finding your voice and “using your words” to be safe. Practice “using your words” and what this means.

13. Explain healthy ways to cope with sad, angry and scared feelings.

14. Cyber Safety – Visit www.cybertips.bm and discuss how to stay safe when on-line.

Suggested questions to ask your child after they attend events or sleep-overs:

1. Did you enjoy yourself?

2. How did you spend your time?

3. What was your favorite part of the party or sleepover?

4. What was the least favorite part?

5. Did you feel safe?

6. If applicable - you seem sad today, is there anything you want to share?

7. Always ask if there is anything else your child would like to share and create a safe environment for them to speak openly with you.

If your child discloses they were abused it’s important to remain calm. Reinforce the following:

1. I believe you.

2. What happened wasn’t your fault and it shouldn’t have happened.

3. Thank you for telling me.

4. I will keep you safe (this is a priority for parents/ guardians).

5. I love you and am here for you.

6. I will help you and support you.

7. What happened to you is against the law. Laws are like rules, only more serious. There are consequences when people break rules.

8. We can talk about this as much or as little as you like.

9. I’m sorry that I couldn’t protect you. I love you and we will get through this together.

in ChildhoodVeganism

Veganism has become popular these days amongst adults and children -but what does it mean to be a vegan?

Veganism is defined as: “a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose” (The Vegan Society, 2017). This means you would follow a plantbased diet excluding any animal related products including eggs, dairy and honey. Other aspects of a vegan lifestyle to consider, which vegans may choose to adopt, include not supporting any animal related entertainment or buy animal related products e.g. avoiding zoos and aquariums and not buying any leather products. Many vegans will also take an active role in recycling to improve their carbon footprint.

There are many reasons why someone may choose to be vegan but commonly it would be for personal ethical reasons. For children however, if their parents are already vegan then it is likely they will be raised following a vegan lifestyle also. It is also becoming common for teenagers to make the choice to become vegan. For any person, no matter what age, there are nutritional implications to consider. With children specifically, we need to be mindful of their continued growth and development. Adequate nutritional status can be achieved through a vegan diet; however, the individual will likely need to seek out additional supplementation. If a child is unable to meet their required nutritional status, their growth and development could become compromised.

It is always recommended that children under 6 months old are exclusively breastfed or if this is not possible, then a soya-based infant formula would be appropriate for vegan infants. If breast feeding, Mom should ensure her own nutritional status is complete and supplement appropriately as directed by a physician or dietitian. It is also advised that nuts should be avoided until 5

12 big kids

years old as they pose a choking hazard, but nut butters (unless the child has an allergy) could be used as a good source of protein in younger children. When considering food choices as a non-vegan we would typically look to follow the advice of the Eatwell Guide. Vegans have an alternative version:

• Fruits and vegetables – aiming for the current guidance of 5 portions per day

• Grains – including high fiber choices such as oats, whole wheat breads and pastas and sweet potatoes

• Protein – as no meat is consumed other vegan-friendly sources would include nuts and nut butters, pulses (beans, lentils and peas), seeds, chickpeas and tofu/soy

• Calcium – most calcium typically comes from dairy foods but vegans will get their calcium from fortified non dairy products, dark green leafy vegetables and calcium-set tofu

Potential Concerns

One of the issues which can be faced with children following a vegan diet is, many of the foods are typically lower in energy due to the nature of the foods e.g. less saturated fats as no animal derived products. This means that children may struggle to meet their energy requirements for the day. By ensuring the incorporation of some healthy, vegan-friendly fats e.g. nut butters, mono/polyunsaturated oils (olive oil, canola oil, avocado) and a balanced diet, this should aid the child in meeting their daily energy requirements. Without a good balance of fats, proteins and starches in the diet, there may be the tendency to make up their energy needs via high sugar containing foods and drinks, which in turn can cause dental caries. Another issue we need to consider is, if an adolescent (in particular) choses to follow a vegan diet, this may be a mask for an eating disorder.

Benefits

Some of the benefits of following a vegan lifestyle from early on in life can follow a child through to adulthood. For example, veganism typically promotes healthy eating patterns with lots of fruit and vegetables and lean protein sources and low saturated fat intakes. This is beneficial as it can reduce the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, excessive weight gain, development of type 2 diabetes and heart disease (American Dietetic Association, 2018).

Summary

In conclusion the health benefits and risks can balance out and an informed choice should be made as a family as

to whether a vegan lifestyle is followed. If an older child makes the choice independently of their family to become vegan, it is recommended you discuss it together and consider the implications this could have on them and the family in general. It would also be a good idea to consult with a family physician and a Registered Dietitian to ensure the child is receiving the correct nutrients through their food choices and that they understand what difficulties they could face.

If you are concerned about your or your child’s nutritional health and feel you would benefit from support from a Registered Dietitian please contact us at Island Nutrition on 295-4082 or at info@islandnutrition.bm

Laying a Firm Foundation

Parenting is one of our most important and challenging jobs. In today’s society our children are pulled in many different directions. As parents, we wonder how to guide them. The Rabain, Thompson and Holdipp families were brought together through their faith. They worship at the Hamilton SeventhDay Adventist Church, and have chosen to raise their children with Christianity as their guiding principle.

Dr. Carmen Rabain, a Dentist at Coral Dental, Mrs. Sharmaine Thompson, the Office Co-ordinator at Coral Dental and Mrs. Linda Holdipp, a Mentor Educator for the Ministry of Education have been friends for 7 years. They first met one another at church, and their daughters Ava, Lara and Laila are also friends. The girls attend ballet classes with each other and sing in their church’s Children’s Choir together.

The friends discuss the importance of Christianity in their lives.

How did you meet each other?

Carmen: We were all pregnant at the same time. Linda and I were friends. I met Sharmaine through church. We became friends and now work together. Linda: A parent group linked us - about a book called ‘Child Guidance.’

Carmen: I had friends in the states who were reading ‘Child Guidance’. They formed a group to study the book which is popular in our church. It discusses the different stages in your child’s life - from a Christian basis. We decided to form a group and schedule times to come together, have lunch, and discuss the book.

Linda: This solidified our friendship connection.

Is this how your daughters became friends?

Linda: Our church has scheduled time for study & worship called ‘Cradle Roll’ where the children have activities. They sing, read stories, play instruments, do crafts - like Sunday School but we call it Sabbath School. As our daughters got older, we participated. Sharmaine did crafts, I did story time. Through this and our lunches, our daughters played together. Their friendship organically happened.

Does your faith affect the way you raise your children?

Carmen: It guides everything. Every choice I make from how I educate Ava, how I discipline her, how she dresses, Ava’s friends, what I let her listen to. My faith is my core. It’s my reference point in raising her.

18 big kids
“Children are a heritage from the Lord.” Psalm 127:3

Sharmaine: Ditto to what Carmen said! As far as my faith, it also affected the school I choose. My son Robin, and Laila, attend the Bermuda Institute because of the school’s core values. Laila doesn’t have to worry about peer pressure behind not ‘being invited’ to activities because most of her friends have their parties at school or on Sunday. We don’t partake in things on the Sabbath. That day is aside for worship. The school makes it easier to guide her.

Linda: I couldn’t say there is any decision for Lara that isn’t guided by my faith. Every aspect of parenting is guided by my faith. Lara’s a gift from God. My decisions are in line with what I feel God wants me to do. Carmen’s answer is succinct. Our faith guides everything – even our diet. Our church talks about eating healthy. We encourage this in our home. Clean healthy foods are important. They help Lara’s development – her brain and her body – to be in service to God.

What’s the guiding principal of your faith?

Sharmaine: God is first in all that I do.

Carmen: My biggest goal for myself and my family is making sure I’m behaving in a way that Christ would - using Christ as my example more than anything else. Teaching Ava to treat others as Christ treated people – it’s what I always go back to.

Linda: From Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go and when

he is old he will not depart from it.” Teach children to be caring, compassionate, empathetic, thoughtful, kind, and loving - it will make the world a better place.

Sharmaine: A short guideline I say to Laila, “It’s nice to be important but it’s more important to be nice.”

Carmen: It’s not fool proof! My father was a Pastor. I was raised in the church! I know people drift, but they come back – when it’s in their core values. Where you raised in the Seventh Day Adventist Church?

Linda: My father was Adventist. My mom wasn’t. I was baptized at 10 but didn’t authentically practice until I was 23.

Sharmaine: I came to faith later in my adulthood.

Carmen: I was always in Church! It’s admirable when you’ve lived a whole different way and then consciously

decide to change your life and come to Church.

Linda: Our church is a worldwide organization that focuses on the whole person. Their spiritual well-being, health, education, business. Our church wants people to be the best they can be. The Sabbath is set aside for family and friends. It’s a special time for worship and for re-connecting.

Carmen: That’s when our daughters get together. We spend time together –Sabbath lunches, activities, we do things together.

Ava, Lara and Laila’s fathers also feel strongly about the importance of raising their daughters as Christians.

Brian Holdipp, Lara’s father, says “To me, being a Christian dad involves raising our daughter in the ways of the Lord. As my wife Linda and I try to live our lives in a way that glorifies God, we want the same for Lara. So we do our best to guide her towards things that would foster a strong desire for spiritual things. She’s of course still quite young, but it warms my heart to hear her singing praise songs she’s learned at church or to hear her sincere prayers, especially at bedtime - wow that’s the best feeling in the world for a father trying to raise a Christian daughter. Following biblical advice found in Proverbs 22 v 6, I am doing my part to train her up in the way she should go so that when she is old she will not depart from it.”

2018 SunSmart Summer Camp

ancer of the skin is by far the most common of all cancers according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), and it is on the rise! Exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays increases skin cancer risk, which can be dangerous and even deadly. Suffering one or more blistering sunburns in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life. The good news is that most skin cancers can be prevented!

With spring and summer camp registrations about to launch, parents will want to make informed decisions on the best camp for their child’s needs. Sun Protection policies are something parents should be aware of. Ask your potential camp if they are SunSmart Accredited and if they have a current SunSmart policy. This will help identify camps who take preventing skin cancer seriously and demonstrates that their staff are practising sun safe behaviours to help protect your child from heat stroke, dehydration, and sunburns.

“Children are more sensitive to the sun, and the sun’s rays are strongest during the summer months, when children tend to spend ample time outdoors,” says Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “Teaching children to adopt a sun-safe lifestyle when they’re young will prevent skin cancer and encourage them to begin lifelong healthy skin habits.”

Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre is pleased to offer this FREE Accreditation Programme, to camp directors, owners and staff.

The programme includes:

• Information sessions covering:

- UV radiation – why is it harmful and when is it strong enough to damage?

- Skin cancer – who is at risk?

- Simple steps to protect skin outdoors

- Importance of developing a protective and proactive camp policy

• Assistance with preparing a SunSmart Policy for your camp

• Protective sunglasses and hats provided at no charge

• An on-site camp assessment

At the end of summer, each camp who passes the evaluation process receives their SunSmart Accreditation Certificate and permission to use the SunSmart logo to help promote their camp in the future.

Summer camp training sessions are held annually in June, and only one session is needed to fulfil the programme

26 C tweens &
teens BY BERMUDA CANCER AND HEALTH CENTRE

requirements. The 2018 dates are TUES JUN 12th 2018, WED JUN 13th 2018 and THURS JUN 14th 2018. Each session starts at 5:30 pm at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre on Point Finger Rd. in Paget.

The primary objective of the broader SunSmart programme is to target Bermuda’s youth, so they can learn to practice good SunSmart behaviours with a goal of preventing skin cancer using these five (5) basic steps:

1. Slip on sun protective clothing, long-sleeved shirts with collar, long pants

2. Slop on sunscreen, 20 to 30 minutes before going outside. Use broad spectrum with SPF 30+ and REAPPLY every 2 hours

3. Slap on a broad-brimmed hat that will protect your face, ears and neck

4. Seek shade between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm

5. Slide on close fitted, wraparound sunglasses with UV protection

Additionally, DON’T forget to stay hydrated and drink lots of water!

The Bermuda Weather Service (BWS) monitors the Ultraviolet Index (UVI) data recorded here in Bermuda, using a state of the art machine called a radiometer provided by a private donor through Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre (BCHC). The Bermuda UVI can be viewed in real time on the BWS website www.weather.bm or

BCHC’s website www.chc.bm. Based on the UVI value of 1-11+ seen on these websites, you will be able to plan outdoor activities and practise sun protective measures to enjoy your day and reduce your risk of being diagnosed with skin cancer.

The SunSmart programme is supported by an annual grant (10% of funds raised on the island) from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Every March, Bermudians from school aged to adult, male and female, “Rock the Bald” and shave their heads or cut their long hair to raise funds for St. Baldrick’s childhood cancer research. Through the philanthropic efforts of those who give to this cause, the SunSmart Programme can deliver the crucial prevention message to the community and supply camps with the tools they need to host a

SunSmart Accredited Camp.

BCHC’s long-standing membership in the Department of Health’s, Healthy Schools Programme and partnership with the Endeavour Programme since 2015, allows the SunSmart Programme to operate with a broader scope. We continue to support and engage in community outreach initiatives that promote health education. Additionally, corporate and community presentations are on offer, from wellness fairs to lunch and learns.

To book a SunSmart Summer Camp Accreditation Training session or inquire about a school presentation or lunch and learn, call or email Azuree Williams, the SunSmart Coordinator at 236-1001 ext.1005/sunsmart@chc.bm or for more information, check out our website www.chc.bm

A Smarter Summer at Oxford Learning

Research into summer learning shows that students can lose up to 30% of their academic skills over the summer break. This means that in the fall, students are actually further behind that when they left school at the beginning of summer. Maintaining academic momentum over the summer prevents this backward learning slide, and keeps their brains in active learning mode so that they are ready to learn from the first day of school.

With OXFORD LEARNING SUMMER PROGRAMS, CHILDREN:

• Maintain an educational routine

• Catch up at a comfortable pace

• Get ahead with introduction to next grade concepts

• Develop new learning skills

Have You Heard?

We’re hosting Bermuda’s First Digital Citizenship Conference

Imagine your child is with your family, relaxing and enjoying the wonderful start of summer vibes at the Bermuda Day Parade – just enjoying the day. Then, a message pops up on his phone - “Everyone thinks ya mug.” Or maybe your daughter sees a snap on Snapchat mocking her along with a traumatizing and false rumor that went viral before she even saw it. This is a nightmare that happens daily amongst Bermudian students that not only effects them today but into the future as well. And unfortunately the experiences kids have with such scenarios have reached epidemic proportions.

Distressing headlines about social media can leave the impression that the internet is an evil sea creature waiting to devour our youth one click at a time. While many of

these fears about social media are valid, we need to manage our response.

Many parents and school officials respond by banning and restricting access to technology. The belief is that that by doing this they are keeping our Bermudian youth safe from cyberbullies, sexual predators, fraud and other online threats. This approach however, can leave our children ill-prepared to safely and knowledgeably navigate the dangers social media and other emerging technologies can present.

The Department of ICT Policy & Innovation has chosen another approach. On May 8th, 2018 the Department will be hosting Bermuda’s first Digital Citizenship Conference. The aim of the conference is to teach our young people how to be good Digital Citizens and how to successfully exploit the

tweens & teens

positive benefits of social media as a tool for communicating and learning.

The Digital Citizenship Conference is the first national initiative to address cyberbullying in Bermuda. The Programme and Conference will both be designed and managed by our youth. With the guidance of industry professionals, middle and high school students will be trained as change agents to work towards addressing the social, emotional, physical and legal effects of cyberbullying.

The student-led conference will allow the opportunity to model use of social media and other technologies through authentic, real-life scenarios, so that the students will not only know how to use social media responsibly, but will also understand why doing so is important. The conference will also focus on awareness of the legal and cultural contexts in which we communicate, work and go to school.

The Digital Citizenship Conference is led by a student steering committee comprised of students from both public and private middle and high schools across the island. It is chaired by Aaron Ratteray, a Senior student at Bermuda Institute. The Committee focuses on Social Media related issues that are specific to Bermuda and developing studentbased projects to tackle them. The students will be working alongside industry professionals across a wide variety of disciplines to develop projects and programmes that will aid in the promotion and execution of positive digital citizenship island-wide.

Cybertips, an initiative run by the Department of ICT Policy and Innovation, will execute programmes and workshops for students within local schools in preparation for the conference, with additional content for parents and

guardians, school administrators and teachers, mental health professionals, medical professionals and legislators.

Students would then design and implement an anticyberbullying focused project at their respective schools. The conference preparation will also include a student-driven public awareness campaign and a review of Bermuda’s current legislation governing cyber-related crimes from the youth perspective.

Participation from a wide variety of local community and industry-related groups such as sporting organizations, youth leadership organizations and local law enforcement is encouraged and expected.

Bermuda’s young people avid consumers it comes to the use of the technology. Our youth are immersed in technology from a very early age and become subject-matter experts very quickly. But that means they are also exposed to the positive and negative attributes of that access. Cyberbullying is a worldwide epidemic and Bermuda is no exception. The 2018 Digital Citizenship Conference will allow students to approach this problem and develop ideas of how to deal with it from their unique perspectives.

For more information on how you or your organization can support the 2018 Digital Citizenship Conference please contact Sloane Wilson at the Department of ICT Policy & Innovation at ictpolicy@gov.bm or call 294-2774.

A Dream That Stays

In Motion

“In Motion has always stood for innovation in dance and the arts. We believe that with the best training and support all dancers can reach their full potential in the arts and in life.”

“We’re always looking at innovations and what’s new in dance education that’s appropriate for the art and will help develop local dancers. We provide a safe environment and encourage every student to reach their personal best.” —Mrs.

The In Motion School of Dance was a dream that became a reality. Miss Lizz started dancing when she was 3 years old, performing professionally when she was thirteen for the Greg Thompson’s Follies. She studied ballet, tap, jazz, and modern dance, graduating with a double degree – a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance (cum laude) and a Business Management degree from Florida International University/New World School of the Arts in Miami. She’s the Director and owner of In Motion which opened its doors in 1997 as a single room on Chancery Lane. The school has successfully grown and is currently located on Reid Street.

Did you always want to be a dancer?

“I’ve always loved dance and I started when I was three like many girls. Throughout my training I dreamed of opening a dance studio in Bermuda, but when I returned home after college I became a Junior Auditor, and only taught as a Junior Dance Teacher at Jackson’s. I never lost the dream of the school though. I used to doodle our logo all the time!”

“I wasn’t happy as an auditor and while driving to work one day I decided to quit and follow my dream. By co-incidence I saw an ad for a rental space. I remember walking in there and imagining exactly how everything would look. I rented it on the spot. When I told the owner that I’d be using the space as a dance studio, he said ‘That’ll never work!’ and while it’s been hard work, I proved the naysayers wrong. It hasn’t been easy. I put my

life savings into the business and with my family’s support and the encouragement of my friend Jennifer Soares, In Motion was born. I started with 40 students, teaching every class. I had my doubts, but I never lost my drive or passion for dance.”

What’s your favourite part of your job?

“We’re family here. We’re not just teachers. We play many roles in our students’ lives. We are here 7 days a week and it’s our second home! Dancers come here and get the best training available regardless of whether or not they want to pursue dance as a career. They learn camaraderie, discipline, self-motivation and accomplishment. I’m proud of all the dancers who come through these doors whether they went on to pursue dance careers overseas, or are former students who return, bringing their little ones to class.”

Does your daughter dance?

“Lola loves to dance. She’s 9 now and has been dancing and choreographing at the school since she was old enough to walk. She’s tried different things but she’s gravitating towards dance. It’s a good energy here. It’s contagious!”

Is there anything else you’d like readers to know?

“Throughout the year we have many performances and events - Our Annual Dance Showcase in June, the Summer Dance Intensive in August and the Nutcracker Holiday Spectacular in

December. It’s an important part of our students’ education and theatre training. We send dancers away every year. For the Summer Dance Intensive we bring in teachers who’ve worked on Broadway musicals, and choreographed for performance legends like Madonna and Beyonce!”

In Motion offers classes every day

of the week in ballet, jazz, tap, modern dance, ‘street style’, prepointe and pointe, pre-ballet, ballet bar, ‘Stretch, Turns & Leaps’, Performance Plus, ‘Parents & Tots’, and adult classes. The studio also hosts Zumba, Ballet Barre, Capoeira, Qigong and Private classes. Further information contact: Tel: 292-7615. Email: info@inmotionbda.com

family life Get Active!

In the Premier’s Youth Fitness Program

“Making the decision to have a child - it is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.”

As parents we want what is best for our children. One of our deepest hopes is to provide them with all the love, knowledge, and opportunity they need to allow them to succeed and have a life even better than our own. However, the current generation of children will be the first generation in decades to have a life expectancy shorter than their parents. This is due to a multitude of lifestyle factors, including: sedentary behaviors, inactivity, and poor nutrition habits. Simply put, our kids are moving less and less with each generation that goes by – and this is having a detrimental effect on their health.

The Bermuda 2014 STEPS Survey revealed that 74.6% of Bermudians are overweight, with 34.4% being obese. Knowing that more than 30% of children and adolescents are overweight, the entire community must make a concerted effort to encourage our children and families to be more active. The Premier’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition was formed in May 2015 to develop initiatives aimed at helping Bermuda’s population to improve its health and wellness. One of the key initiatives developed by the Council is the Premier’s Youth Fitness Program.

The Premier’s Youth Fitness Program (PYFP) is a school-based program for students from P5 / Grade 4 - S3 / Grade 11. It utilizes state of the art fitness testing via heart rate monitors and the Spirit System. The Spirit System is designed to be a non-competitive health-related fitness assessment based on scientifically established Healthy Fitness Zone standards. The program will help schools evaluate and evolve their physical education programming into an education experience that supports the whole child. The testing enables physical education teachers to collect both biometric and fitness assessment data of students. The assessments will provide students and parents with an age appropriate fitness profile. The profiles will

highlight your child’s areas of strength and provide recommendations for physical activity options for those areas that need improvement.

The PYFP also implemented the Spark Curriculum in all government schools, which will complement the Spirit System and fitness testing taking place. The Spark Curriculum will also standardize physical education and ensure children are receiving a complete and adequate health education across Bermuda. The children have been provided an activity log where they can record any physical activity they engage in outside of school. Children who accrue outstanding levels of fitness minutes for the year will earn fantastic prizes, sponsored by BF&M, which will be awarded at the Premier’s Champions Awards ceremony. With any new challenge, your child will need support and encouragement to reach new heights of success. But how can you get

44

involved in the PYFP and increase your child’s activity levels?

In September 2017, thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Bermuda Olympic Association, and the hard work of the PYFP Committee Members from the Department of Health, Department of Education and BF&M Insurance Group, Healthy Habit daily planners were provided to all students from P5 to S3 in the public school system and many private schools as well. These planners have been designed to work in tandem in the program and reinforce development and maintenance of healthy lifestyle habits. The planners contain information on nutrition and fitness tips, fun challenges, and interactive activities. The planners will also be utilized as a tool by both teachers and parents to keep health and fitness at the forefront of their child’s daily activities.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to be involved in their child’s participation and may complete physical activities with their child as s/he progresses from one challenge level within the PYFP to the next. Community sports groups and the Bermuda National Sport Governing Bodies are partnering with the Council to engage students in their respective activities at no charge or a nominal fee. Physical Education teachers and parents are charged with encouraging children and teens to join the sport/physical activity of their choice and each sports group will sign off on each child’s activity log. According to the Healthy Schools coordinator, Marie Beach-Johnson, the initiatives

will introduce children to different sports and activities, while encouraging them to gain higher fitness levels. “It’s to really expose them to other physical activity options, and then they can better choose which physical activities they like.” If you are interested in the PYFP and what it has to offer your child, feel free to visit stepitup.bm to find out more about the program. Below are some tips to help start getting your child more active today:

1. Get interested. Show an interest in any activities your child likes and encourage them to try out new physical activities.

2. Don’t drive as much. Walk rather than drive and encourage your kids to cycle and walk where possible. Try to integrate movement into your everyday lives- it can be as simple as just parking a little farther away and walking a little more to your destination.

3. Help kids to be sporty. Playing sport is a great way for children to be active. If your kids don’t like traditional sports, there are lots of alternatives: paddle boarding, kayaking, martial arts, golf, dance, or archery to name a few.

4. Get active yourself! You are your child’s most important role model – so if you are a couch potato, don’t expect your kids to be active! Your habits will rub off on your kids.

5. Be active together. Why not bond with the kids by doing some physi cal activity together? Some great options are swimming, walking the railway trails, playing tennis, or even table tennis. It’s important that you set a good example and your engagement will improve your own health as well!

Talking to Your Children

When Money is Tight

Talk to any person who is dealing with money troubles, and they’ll tell you that trying to maintain the status quo can be really challenging, especially if you are trying to shield your children from the reality. I know parents don’t want their children to worry and that all they want is for their children to grow up happy, leaving the worrying to the grown-ups. Sadly, by shielding children from the truth that finances are tight and things need to change for the benefit of the whole family, you are actually providing your children with a

false sense of reality, a reality that does not exist in the real world. Life has different phases, and therefore ups and downs are a part of life; your children need to be aware of this and, most importantly, learn how to cope with the ever-changing landscape. Children are resilient, but they learn from their parents – if their parents are hiding things from them, then children will hide things from their parents. Our human instinct is to tell the truth; we make a choice to lie. Whether you have lost your job, need to downsize your home because you

can’t afford it, or are getting divorced, children want to know the truth – but more importantly, they want to know how the problem can be fixed.

So, how do you chat to your children when money is tight?

A parent knows their child inside out, so you need to think about that in your delivery. If your child is a bit sensitive, do not share all the nitty-gritty details –perhaps limit your discussion to reducing expenses and saving money for the future. If your child is old enough to understand, you should just stick to the facts and make sure the child knows the conversation is confidential and that everyone at school doesn’t need to know.

Young children tend to discuss their prized possessions with other children. If you have to tighten your belt because of financial problems and your children’s demands can’t be met, this is the time when you can teach them the lesson that they should be satisfied with what they have and never compare their situation with that of other people. Avoiding the situation and giving the child what they want causes two problems:

1. You have just put yourself in a worse financial position.

2. You have just taught your child that “keeping up with the Joneses” is a good thing.

In my group of childhood friends, it always seemed that when one of my friends got something new, slowly over the course of the next few weeks, all my other friends did too… except me.

46 family life

Was it humiliating? No. Was it isolating? No. Was it annoying? Yes. But it made me the person I am today: ‘I focus on my future and don’t compare myself to others.

Preteens are mature enough to understand most things, so get them involved in helping the family reduce their expenses. Ask them to help with some of the chores that may have been outsourced – gardening, cleaning, etc. In my childhood home there were definitely a few lean years. I remember clearly a specific couple of years where my parents asked us children to choose just one extracurricular activity for the year so they didn’t have to buy lots of different equipment and uniforms.

When it comes to teenagers, they are very much aware of what is happening around them, so if there are financial issues in your home, they get it. Teenagers especially want to impress their friends with the latest and greatest must-have, so it is a great time to encourage your child to get an after-school job. Now if they do get a part-time job, it does not relinquish you from your parental responsibilities, but it gives your child the opportunity to get the things they want which you can’t necessarily afford. In my home, I remember hearing the phrase “We can’t afford it” from my parents. Initially, it drove me mad; however, it made me realize that if I wanted

something, then I would have to do something about it myself. At 15 years old, I walked into KFC and asked for a part-time job; for the next five years it provided me with not only an income but also some of the greatest life lessons that I still apply today.

Regardless of the age of your children, it is important when you chat about finances, especially when things are tight, that you talk values, not figures. It is probably best not to disclose your salary and how much you are paying on major expenses, but rather focus on the concepts – paying off a mortgage so you can own a home, saving so they can go to university, and making sure the money that is coming in on a monthly basis can pay for everything to ensure they have a roof over their heads.

At the end of the day, children really only care about being loved, and parents really only want their children to have a happy upbringing. So, just have faith in the children you are raising and be honest when you are facing challenges.
