Rates are proposed to increase by 2.5 percent for 18 hole play for senior residents

“In 2016 we had a banner year for play and revenue,” said Marc Bayram, Timberlin golf pro. “We are trying to continue some of the things that helped make it a successful year.” Bayram said most years rates increase 2 to 4 percent. “We try to increase rates incrementally year to year,

eliminating the burden of a large increase,” he said. The commission is proposing that golf cart prices increase 2.5 percent for 9 hole play and 2.94 percent for 18 hole play. The commission also wants to offer “cart cards” — with six rides for the cost of five. The cost of a resident senior restricted pass, with play after 3 p.m. on weekends and anytime on weekdays, will increase by 2.5 percent.

A fall event transformed the McGee media center into a restaurant for “tasting” books is highlighted in the video. McGee librarian Rachel Rice said students were able to try a new genre or subject and write a review. The school’s March Madness reading event is also featured. It places books in a “bracket” similar to the NCAA basketball tournament. Over 100 students participated in a read-a-thon, also part of March Madness. In all, more than 22,000 minutes were logged and over $6,000 was raised for charity.

Above left, Lisa Turgeon, library paraprofessional, and English Language Arts teacher Gabrielle Garncarz treat eighth graders to a snack during the book “tasting” event at McGee Middle School. The reading programs are being highlighted in a video for the national Follett Challenge. Above right, the March Madness Read-a-thon and reading bracket encourages kids to read at McGee Middle School.

“It truly is a skill that can be enjoyed by all who are lucky enough to know how to do

it well,” Urso said. “We really try to make reading relevant in every lesson at school.”

| Rachel Rice, Contributed

Students also created book reviews on a blog and made their own video book trail-

ers. Rice said students often share books through social media. Voting for the Follett Challenge began Monday, and ends Friday. Urso is hopeful the school will win a prize.

Government Meetings

A chilling trajectory Our society is in the grip of a serious opioid problem, and the early days of 2017 have provided several examples of this locally.

in her obituary, and Amy Andreana — Lisa’s mother — shared her daughter’s story at the recent community forum.

On Jan. 3, quick-thinking Meriden Police Officer Matthew Hartline used the opioid overdose reversing drug naloxone to save a man who had OD’d in the street.

Other speakers that evening included town leaders, health professionals, and a recovering addict. More than 100 citizens were in attendance, a clear sign that, when it comes to the current opioid epidemic, people are concerned and looking for answers.

Meriden police had been carrying naloxone for only about a month at the time, and Hartline is the first city officer to revive an overdose victim using the life-saving drug. He likely won’t be the last. A week after Hartline’s heroics, on Jan. 11, a community forum was held in Berlin to discuss opioid abuse. This sleepy town dotted with farmland is not insulated from the scourge of opioid addiction. Several young people in Berlin were lost to drugs in 2016, including Lisa Andreana, a 2012 graduate of Berlin High School. Andreana’s family bravely laid out the young woman’s battle with heroin addiction

Yet another reminder that opioid abuse is on the march came on Jan. 15. That day, a Cheshire resident was found unresponsive, with drug paraphernalia nearby, in a Hartford McDonald’s bathroom. The 25-year-old man was later pronounced dead. Another young person gone too soon. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration points out that “as people use opioids repeatedly, their tolerance increases and they may not be able to maintain the source for the drugs. This can cause

them to turn to the black market for these drugs and even switch from prescription drugs to cheaper and more risky substitutes like heroin.” The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that, since 1999, deaths from prescription opioids — drugs like oxycodone, hydrocodone and methadone — have quadrupled. Meanwhile, the department says the use of heroin — another opioid — is on the rise, as are heroin-related overdose deaths, which more than tripled between 2010 and 2014. What can be done to stop this chilling trajectory? While there is no simple answer, cops carrying naloxone will help, as will openly and honestly discussing opioid addiction, as the town of Berlin did. Pretending the problem doesn’t exist, or will go away on its own, certainly isn’t the answer. This editorial was originally published in the Meriden Record-Journal.

Letter to the Editor Not buying it To the editor: The Republican members of the Berlin Town Council continue to insult my intelligence by their bogus statements on why our town manager has been terminated. Do you really believe the voters are buying all of this?

If you are town employee and have any concerns about working together for the common cause (which, I believe, is the town of Berlin), I caution you not to voice that concern, as it will likely cost you your job.

herself with an ethical work record and desire to wok together for the common cause (the town of Berlin), you may very well be replaced in November. After all, “change” may be necessary to take us “to a higher level.”

Snow blower safety tips With winter snows here, homeowners, contractors, and business owners will again rely on their snow blowers to clear driveways and walks. The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute offers tips for safe and correct use of snow blowers.

Prepare before it snows Review your owner’s manual and check your equipment. Check your owner’s manual for safe handling procedures from your manufacturer. If you forgot to drain the fuel last winter before storing your snow blower, drain the tank now. Adjust any cables. Check the auger (the snow blower should always be completely powered off when you are checking the equipment). Know how to operate the controls. You should be able to shut off your equipment quickly. Prepare your fuel and handle it properly. It’s import-

ant to have the right fuel on hand for your snow blower – movement and fuel availability may be limited during a snowstorm. Be sure to use the correct fuel, as recommended by your equipment’s manufacturer (for more information on fueling properly see www.LookBeforeYouPump.com). Fill up the fuel tank outside before you start the engine and while the engine is cold. Never add fuel to a running or hot engine. Be sure to clean the area you intend to clear with your equipment. Snow can sometimes hide objects that if run over by a snow blower, may harm the machine or people. Doormats, hoses, balls, toys, boards, wires, and other debris should be removed from the areas you intend to clear. Dress appropriately. Wear safety glasses and footwear that can handle slippery surfaces.

Operate equipment safely Never put your hands inside the auger or chute. Use a clean out tool (or stick) to unclog snow or debris from your snow blower. Your

hands should never go inside the auger or chute. Make sure the snow blower is in the off position before addressing any clogs. Turn off the snow blower if you need to clear a clog. If you need to remove debris or unclog snow, always turn off your snow blower. Wait for all moving parts to come to a complete stop before clearing any clogs or debris. Only use the snow blower in visible conditions. Never operate the snow blower without good visibility or light. Aim the snow blower with care. Never throw snow toward people or cars. Do not allow anyone to stand in front of your snow blower. Keep children or pets away from your snow blower when it is operating. Use extreme caution on slopes and hills. Use caution when changing directions on slopes. Do not attempt to clear steep slopes. Know where your cord is. If you have an electric powered snow blower, be aware of where the power cord is at all times. Avoid tripping. Do not run over the power cord.

CIAC baseball panel details new pitch-limit rules Sheehan head coach Matt Altieri, seen here heading to the mound to make a pitching change during the 2016 Class M semifinals, is among state baseball coaches who support the new CIAC pitchlimit rules that go into effect this spring. However, he also believes there are factors in reducing arm injuries that simply counting pitches does not address.

By Ken Lipshez Record-Journal staff

CHESHIRE —The CIAC baseball committee has adjudicated on a pitchlimit rule for the state’s high school pitchers that goes into effect this spring. A chart that metes out the number of days’ rest required per number of pitches thrown in a given outing was the focal point of the committee’s directive.

Veteran Sheehan baseball coach Matt Altieri, who has studied the issue thoroughly, is among the multitude who approve of the ruling. However, he believes there are intangibles to diminishing arm injuries that simply counting pitches does not address. “It’s not just the amount of pitches,” Altieri said, underscoring the conditions and mental strain under which a pitcher is throwing. “If he throws 30 pitches in the first inning, does a team give him rest by scoring a few runs or do they go out 1-2-3 and he’s right back out there? It can be a whole different 30 pitches. It’s not just the number of pitches, it’s the intensity.” Altieri has read the book by Jeff Passan entitled, “The Arm: Inside the Billion Dollar Mystery of the Most Valuable Commodity in Sports.” Altieri also cites the opinion of former scout Paul Reddick: that poor mechanics rather than overuse are at the core of the issue. A pitcher will be able to pitch on successive days if his pitch allotment is 25 or below. If it ranges from 26 to 50, one calendar day of rest is required. For 51 to 75, two days of rest are necessary. Three days will be compulsory if the pitcher throws from 76 to 110 and five are mandatory should he throw more than 110.

TIPS FROM THE PRO

4 ways to improve your golf game this off-season By Marc S. Bayram

Well, it’s officially the winter. Even though golf courses are covered with snow, there are still ways you can improve your golf game. Putting is such an important part of the game and is the club used most in every round of golf you play. During the winter, try to make time to work on your putting every day. This can be done easily at home on any carpet or an indoor putting mat. It’s a great time

vice to the CIAC committee has been futile. “I didn’t think we needed legislation beyond what we had, the outs limit,” he said. “I think that was restrictive enough.” The rule in the CIAC’s 2016 tournament packet states: “The pitcher may not pitch more than 10 innings in any three consecutive calendar days. To determine the eligible number of innings that a pitcher may pitch on game day, total the number of innings pitched during the two previous calendar days and subtract from 10. Ten innings are equal to 30 outs.” The new rule accounts for only legal pitches. Throws as a result of batted balls, warm-up pitches or pitches that are considered illegal — when timeout has been called, for instance — will not count. Pitchers will be allowed to complete the process of pitching to a batter should the pitch limit be surpassed during the plate appearance. Pitch counts in games that are subsequently stopped – for weather, darkness or forfeit purposes, for example — will be applied to the rule.

to check your fundamentals, such as setup and grip, as well as make minor adjustments to improve your stroke. Improve your body. Find a fitness professional who specializes in golf and can evaluate and prescribe a workout based on your physical limitations and weaknesses. A designed workout plan can also help prevent injury when spring comes and you are back playing. A good majority of golfers have certain strength and endurance

problems that prevent them from playing better golf. One area that is extremely important is core strength. Come up with a better golf course management strategy. Watch the players on the PGA Tour, they don’t fire at every flagstick. They are trying to shoot the lowest score they can, but also must play smart. Sometimes par is a good score, as big numbers will prevent you from maximizing your potential. A good tip for the average player is to play for the mid-

dle of the green on every full approach shot. Try it when spring comes, you may be surprised how you score better. Lastly, try and swing every day. Put a club in your hands and make practice swings feeling any changes you may be trying to incorporate in to your swing. Also, try and visualize shots in your mind while swinging. This will help you keep in touch with your clubs and your swing. It will also provide you with valuable repetition which will

have you ready for opening day in the spring. Try these four ways to improve your golf game this off-season and be ready when the snow melts. I hope to see you on the tee sooner than later! The writer is the PGA Head Golf Professional at Timberlin Golf Club. To contact him with golf questions or information regarding golf lessons, email timberlinhp@gmail. com.

In both cases, pitchers surpassing those totals will be permitted to finish an at-bat. Throwing 1-45 pitches on a given day will necessitate one day’s rest. HARTFORD — The legislature appears poised this session to debate abortion, access to contraception, workplace conditions for pregnant and nursing mothers, and other women’s health issues.

Family Institute of Connecticut, said he wants a public hearing, blaming lobbyists for successfully blocking efforts to discuss abortion in the state legislature. “I’m thrilled that this is happening,” he told reporters after the press conference. “There has not been a serious discussion on this issue in many, many years.” Wolfgang said he’d consider a public hearing a victory. The last significant debate about abortion law in the General Assembly was in 2007.

“I’m ready for (an abortion) debate,” state Rep. Liz Linehan, D-Cheshire, said during a press conference in the Legislative Office Building. “We’re going to show, again, that overwhelmingly the people of Connecticut, not just the women of Connecticut ... are behind us.”

conference include legislation that would preserve the right to pregnancy-related health care, as well as others preserving provisions under the Affordable Care Act, such as access to contraceptives. The package of bills would also continue the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that breast pumps be covered by insurance and improve workplace conditions for nursing mothers and pregnant women.

Comcast embraces National Mentoring Month

From A22

January is National Mentoring Month. “Bigs” (adult mentors) and “Littles” (children being mentored) in the “Beyond School Walls” mentoring program at Comcast decided it would be the ideal opportunity to help community partner Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters recruit Big Brothers and Big Sisters for both its community-based and site-based programs.

Lawmakers said they put the proposals forward because of debate at the national level. Some of the bills would continue Affordable Care Act requirements in Connecticut should Congress repeal the federal law or parts of it. They also expressed concern about other bills proposed by some Republican state legislators.

“The other children in ‘Beyond School Walls’ echo Alaysia’s sentiment,” said Karen Perham-Lippman, Alaysia’s Big Sister and Manager of Community Investment for Comcast’s Western New England Region. “They want other children to benefit from the mentoring experience, just as they have. “Our goal is to recruit as

In particular, they objected to proposed bills that would require women to have a ultrasound prior to getting an abortion, and one that would mandate parental notification of minors seeking an abortion. Connecticut requires that minors must first receive counseling, but is one of a few states that don’t require notification.

“I love being a Little Sister and love being matched with my Big Sister, Karen,” said 10-year-old Alaysia, who participates in “Beyond School Walls” and also in Nutmeg’s community-based program. “Being a Little Sister has done a lot for me and I want other kids to be able to have amazing Big Brothers and Big Sisters too!”
