Berlin honors military service on Veterans Day Local veterans, town officials and residents gathered at Veterans Memorial Park on Friday in honor of Veterans Day. “We thank you for your service to our country,” said Charles Colaresi, chairman of the town’s veterans commission.

Last Thursday night, McGee Middle School hosted a Veterans Day program with patriotic readings by high school and middle school students. The high school chorus and members of the band performed. Peter Galgano, who was recently appointed as the

town’s veterans service contact person, said the ceremony and program was the town’s way of saying thank you.

“In time of great peril, our veterans have kept that faith,” said Captain Emily Hine, of the Connecticut Army National Guard.

“They’re all doing their best to ensure we keep our freedoms,” he said.

Hine was the guest speaker at Friday’s park ceremony. She said it was important for residents to remember the sacrifices that veterans have

Gerratana prevails in 6th district By Ashley Kus Citizen staff

Supporters gathered at the Pulaski Club in New Britain Tuesday night, Nov. 8, to congratulate incumbent Terry Gerratana on her win for the 6th district senate seat. “Our victory is everyone’s victory,” she said of her Democratic team. Gerratana defeated petitioning candidate Sharon Beloin-Saavedra and Republican Charles Paonessa by more than 8,000 votes. She has represented the 6th district since 2011. “We have to make things work now,” Paonessa said. “We have to support each other.” In his first bid for state office, the Republican Berlin Town Councilor said he wanted to focus on business in Connecticut. Unaffiliated candidate Beloin-Saavedra, president of New Britain’s Board of Education, collected enough signatures to petition onto the ballot. She ran on a platform of bipartisanship and transparency. Gerratana won the Democratic primary against Beloin-Savvedra, earning roughly two-thirds of the votes cast. Gerratana ran on a platform of continuing to be a strong voice for the people of the 6th district.

Re-elected Aresimowicz to focus on trade schools By Ashley Kus Citizen staff

State Rep. Joe Aresimowicz says he will focus on preparing young people for jobs in skilled trades after defeating Republican challenger Chris Morelli in a closer than expected race for the 30th House District seat. “It was a very good day,” said Aresimowicz, House Democratic majority leader. “I am excited and looking forward to continuing work with the towns.” He will begin his seventh consecutive term after receiving over 4,000 votes for re-election in Berlin, though

announced Wednesday, Nov. 9. Abercrombie won by 160 votes in the Meriden-Berlin district, a large enough margin to avoid an automatic recount. Vollano had not conceded the race as of Wednesday night, Nov. 9. A discrepancy at the Lincoln Middle School polling place led to about 20 ballots being double counted, according to City Clerk Denise Grandy.

Abercrombie thanked her supporters Tuesday night, Nov. 8. “I’m excited because the voters believed in me and I work really hard for them,” Abercrombie said. “I’m looking forward to two more years working on their behalf.” The unofficial results showed Abercrombie winning with 5,278 votes compared to 5,118 for Vollano. — Record-Journal staff

Punishment too harsh

To the editor:

To the editor:

Thank you again to everyone who supported me in this campaign, and I thank God for what was one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

Recent articles in The Citizen chronicled the five-day unpaid suspension of Berlin police lieutenant James Gosselin for “violating department rules” for providing training, without asking permission from the chief or deputy chief, for an officer that had left the department. The articles describe Lt. Gosselin’s “offense,” and his rationale for doing what he did, at no cost to the department. One article quoted the Police Commission chairman as saying during the commission meeting, “If you have 27 years of loyalty, you just blew it on this one as far as I’m concerned.” Really? This “offense” blows away 27 years of loyalty? Is there more to this story than has been reported?

It’s astonishing that a lieutenant with “27 years of loyalty” is treated this harshly for what appears to be a minor infraction. The unpaid suspension should be rescinded, and no more than a disciplinary letter should be imposed. John Murphy

There are too many people to go through to thank everyone specifically, but I really want to thank my family for being so supportive and helpful, and my treasurer Steve Massucci for all of the time he spent on this campaign. Rep. Aresimowicz defeated me by a slim margin and I am sorry to those of you who supported me that I was not able to garner enough votes to be elected. I spoke to Rep. Aresimowicz on election night to congratulate him and he was very gracious in victory. I, again, wish him the best back at the capital for the next term and I hope his tenure as Speaker of the House is both good for the state and enjoyable for him. Thank you to everyone who I met in this campaign, even if you did not vote for me, you all taught me more than I could have ever expected. Best wishes, Chris Morelli

EDITORIAL

Changes in Berlin On Election Day, the people of Berlin voted to make some major changes to their town charter, while shooting down one big proposal.

comfortable with that, and chose to keep the BOE as is — not outwardly political. Voters also nixed general charter changes, 65 of them.

government currently in place works just fine, and that by changing the charter, power will shift away from the people and toward party leaders.

Going forward, the community will elect a mayor and choose a six-member Board of Finance.

The people had their say, as it should be.

In the end, both camps got a bit of what they wanted.

In the lead-up to Election Day, charter change became a contentious issue in town. Generally speaking, Berlin Republicans were for all the changes and their Democratic counterparts were against them.

“I think it’s a big victory for Berlin taxpayers and residents,” Paul Argazzi, chairman of the charter revision commission, told the Record-Journal.

Currently, the person of the majority party who received the most votes for Town Council is named mayor. And, at present, Berlin has no Board of Finance. Also, voters liked the idea of instituting an automatic referendum for bond ordinances over $5 million. While Berlin residents gave a nod to those charter changes, they voted “no” on making the Board of Education a partisan body. The majority of voters weren’t

The Berlin Republicans opened their campaign headquarters Thursday, Sept. 15. The headquarters was located at 1128 Farmington Ave. The party members are holding a sign in favor of revising the Town Charter.

North Haven, Berlin and Southington. Markley supported Trump despite his not having “fully developed principles,” he said. His policy plans for the federal government and the states remain unknown, but Trump’s message of “distrust of Washington resonates with everybody,” Markley said. “I have my fingers crossed,” Markley said. “I rather have what I’m not sure of, than what I know I don’t want.” Markley is also pleased Trump will be making Supreme Court nominations, to end what he feels is “judicial activism.” Trump’s stunning win was the result of assuming the turnout for Clinton would be similar to the turnout for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 and underestimating the turnout for Trump, said state Rep. Mary Mushinsky D-Wallingford.

ity advocates Thursday, Nov. 10, Mushinsky said many expressed concern about Trump attempting to dismantle environmental regulations to protect clean water and against climate change. Trump denied the science behind climate change and has pledged to eliminate some environmental regulations. “We depend on quite a bit of federal funding,” Mushinsky said about protecting clean water. “We have funding in place, but we don’t know what’s going to happen in 2017. Climate change is of great concern to me. What type of world (will) our kids live in? There is great apprehension among the environmental community.” Mushinsky is also concerned for the Latino population in Wallingford, including the prospect that stricter deportation policies will split up families. “We have to see if his policies match his rhetoric,” she said.

State Sen. Leonard Fasano, R-North Haven, said that while he did not endorse Trump, he voted for him and is optimistic about the posIn a meeting with water qual- sibility of former New York Mayor Rudy Guliani and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich serving in Trump’s cabinet. Mushinsky said it is hard to say what Trump will or won’t do because he has changed his positions so often.

“That’s a step in the right direction,” Fasano said. ‘What’s important is that I think

political correctness has led to prohibited conversations that put the taboo on words and ideas to solve the problems.” Guy Beeman, Meriden Republican town chairman, said he didn’t agree with Trump’s words or actions, but didn’t trust Clinton. “What he said or how he acts is less important than her being investigated for all these things,” Beeman said. “She has so many issues against her now. It’s pretty scary. He was the more positive candidate.” Beeman also liked Trump’s track record of running a business and “making things happen.” Meriden City Manager Guy Scaife would not comment on the outcome of the election except to say there could be some changes to municipal budgets and programs of which city leaders need to be cognizant. Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr. said regardless of who won the election, municipalities will have to cut back spending unless there are significant changes in the state and national economies. “There was very little talk about the economy during the campaign,” Dickinson said. Without improvement “that puts a pall over available money and where we are going.”

Oakes said the revision will continue to provide transparency to citizens. “I hope it will give us the opportunity to continue to paint that picture for the people,” he said. A political action committee against all five charter questions called “Protect and Respect Our Town’s Effective Charter” was also pleased that the school board would remain the same. “We feel grateful that voters saw our way on at least two of the questions,” said Stephen Anderson, a member of the group. The fifth question, regarding general Town Charter changes, was voted down. The general changes included an ordinance by the Town Council to create an agriculture council and a golf commission. Argazzi said the two entities can still be created by ordinance. Grammatical changes and technical issues were also voted down. “I think people didn’t know what they were voting on,” Argazzi said. “We spent a lot of time on that.” Republican Town Committee Chairwoman Anne Reilly said the strongest overall revisions were approved by voters. “People have the right to decide if they want to pay for a project,” she said, referring to automatic referendums for bond ordinances over $5 million.

idea to Brochu. The students then gave a business plan to the principal, who quickly helped put the initiative into action. The students made posters and sent flyers home to raise money for the cause. A week before the fundraiser ended, students brought in $2 each to wear pink for the day. The effort ended up putting the donations $200 above Murphy’s class’ initial goal of $250. “Some brought in their allowance money to donate,” Brochu said.

Brochu said she was excited to see her class involved in the cause. A group of students, including Murphy, even helped Brochu count donations during recess. “It’s really beneficial for them to see the importance of giving back,” the teacher said, “at such a young age too.” – Ashley Kus

Applications being accepted for Operation Fuel assistance Operation Fuel and its statewide network of fuel banks is accepting energy assistance applications from Connecticut households that are in danger of having their utility services terminated. Energy affordability is a yearround problem for more than 313,000 Connecticut households. The annual winter moratorium, which prevents households from having their electricity and gas shut off, ended on May 1 and resumed Nov. 1.

Leslie stood beside me when it came to negotiating price and items that should remain in the house for the new buyers. When an issue arose, she was right there to make sure everything was ironed out so we could have the closing on time. Due to her hard work, I sold my house to a nice young family and I felt good about turning over my family house to them. This was very important to me and Leslie understood that from the beginning. Leslie worked extremely hard for me and my family so that we could achieve our goal of selling our family house. During this time, she was very sensitive to our needs. I find this way of operating a welcome and refreshing change. I would strongly recommend Leslie to anyone that was interested in selling their home who wanted to have strong communications with their agent and a stress free sale.” Joesph J.
