Korean War vet gets replacement medals By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

Months of planning came to fruition when Berlin resident and Korean War veteran Robert Rawlings walked into the hangar at the New England Air Museum in East Granby and found himself surrounded by neighbors and friends.

Local police hope steering drug users into rehabilitation rather than the criminal justice system can reduce the number of deaths related to opioids and heroin.

“He had mentioned to me years ago that he had lost all his medals … so I came up with the idea for his 90th birthday to have his medals replaced,” said David Lallier, Rawlings’ neighbor on Simms Road. With the help of U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Lallier and Rawlings’ wife, Thelma, were able to get replacements from the U.S. Department of Defense. “He’s a great guy, I think a lot of him,” Lallier said of the senator. “When you lose something like those medals, you might not think it’s significant, but it is.” The medals arrived a few months after Rawlings turned 90. The American Legion 103rd Airlift Wing and the New England Air Museum pitched in to put together a ceremony Tuesday, Nov. 27 complete with a visit to a hangar housing an F-86, the aircraft Rawl-

“We know we cannot arrest and prosecute our way out of this problem,” Police Chief John Klett said in a statement, adding the new initiative will give addicts “the opportunity to voluntarily seek assistance.” Robert Rawlings, of Berlin, stands in front of an Air Force F-86, the jet fighter model he flew in the Korean War. Through a partnership with New Britain police, prosecutors, the Hospital of Central Connecticut, MidState Medical Center in Meriden and other local healthcare providers, officers can wave drug-related charges for those who agree to enter treatment. Prosecutors already have the ability to do this, but the initiative by New Britain and Berlin police would keep individuals caught with drugs out of the court system altogether. See Rehab, A13

To the editor: In response to Fred Morley’s Nov. 15, Berlin Citizen letter, what scare tactics did Republicans use to prey on our seniors? Was it the statements that a Democrat-controlled state would lead to higher taxes, implementation of tolls and little change?

Governor-elect Lamont has indicated the top priority is the budget. Yet, the big five priorities of Democratic leaders are: raising the minimum wage, enacting paid family and medical leave, erecting electronic highway tolls, approving sports betting and legalizing recreational marijuana. According to the United Way's most recent ALICE Report, more than 500,000 Connecticut households cannot afford the cost of basic needs; and as home living expenses continue to rise, Operation Fuel expects to see an increased need for energy assistance this winter.

Donations also can be mailed to Operation Fuel, 75 Charter Oak Avenue, Suite 2240, Hartford, CT 06106. Utility customers can donate to Operation Fuel through the nonprofit’s Add-a-Dollar program when paying their utility bills. Operation Fuel uses 100 percent of the donations made to the Add-aDollar program for energy assistance.

“We’re trying to get them help,” Klett said. Klett noted there were 14 opioid-related deaths in Berlin last year. Officers have administered nalaxone, which can reverse an overdose, 43 times since 2016. “This is a problem which crosses all socioeconomic lines,” Klett said. “You have 20-year-olds and 70-yearolds.” New Britain Police Chief James Wardwell said he hasn’t seen overdose deaths this high in his 25 years with the department, demonstrating a “critical need” for the new policy. “We just do pray for the success of this initiative,” he said. “That we can reverse this trend of losing people to opioids.” Jessica Collins, director of behavioral health services for the Hospital of Central Connecticut and MidState Medical Center, said patients will be evaluated to determine the best course of treatment.

He was held in pretrial detention for four months before entering a treatment program. "Everything involved with opioid use disorder for myself created so much guilt and shame, especially when it came to the legal involvement that I had,” Mikkanen said.

Sisters photograph Berlin barns for calendar fundraiser

Twin sisters Meghan and Kiera Riedel, eighth grade students at McGee Middle School, came up with a creative way to raise money for the school’s annual field trip to Washington, D.C. Rather than depend on the candy and gift products fundraiser, the girls created the Berlin Barns Calendar, featuring 12 local barns. The Riedels used their iPhones to take the photos and uploaded them to an online printer to produce the calendars. To obtain a calendar, email berlinbarns@snet.net.

“And it just perpetuated the vicious cycle for me — I would get arrested, I would be released, I may or may not have gone to treatments.” Now in school to become a drug and alcohol counselor, Mikkanen said his past arrests are creating legal barriers for him. He said he hopes this new approach will encourage addicts to get treatment without having to enter the criminal justice system. "Finding that sense of purpose and meaning to move forward in life and feel good about myself is imperative for me to get rid of the guilt and shame associated with my past,” he said. dleithyessian @record-journal.com

Berlin doubled its lead on the final play of the first quarter, a 4-yard pass from Dunn to Halkias. The big play on the 7-play drive was a 43-yard connection from Dunn to Halkias down the right sideline. Sheehan responded with an 8-play drive and was literally on the doorstep of the end zone. Carrying from the 16,

Terrence Bogan (21 carries, 150 yards) broke free up the middle, but fumbled at the 1-yard line. The fumble went into the end zone and was recovered by Dunn for a touchback. The Titans had two first downs on the drive after going 3-and-out on their first three possessions. The Redcoats made it 21-0 on a seam throw from Dunn to Hrubiec. It was a 63-yard TD catch-and-run and the junior threw down a Shee-

Dunn was 9-for-16 for 206 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. Dunn finished the game 19-for-28 for 244 yards and four passing touchdowns. Hrubiec, who had 149 total yards at the half, more than redeemed himself after fumbling on his first carry of the game. Tyler Ekstrom recovered the fumble. Eckstrom also had a sack in the game.
