Norman Rockwell Christmas coming to the ridge

High school of the future

By Olivia L. Lawremce The Berlin Citizen

A public hearing will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 21 at Town Hall in regards to a $69.9 million plan to renovate and expand Berlin High School. Architects and engineers Silver/Petrucelli + Associates, Inc. presented the new plan to the Town Council Dec. 7. The council subsequently moved it forward to a public hearing. The architects’ proposal can be viewed on the town website under the Public Works Department. For more on the plan, see page 3.

This Christmas Eve, all along Worthington Ridge from Mill Street to the south end, 1,300 luminaria will light the way to a season of joy. “We forget the simple things in life,” said Chris Rose, who organized the event. “As a child I remember Worthington Ridge years ago when the houses had all these candles like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting.” Rose said she hopes to bring that image back to Berlin and she’s gained a lot

of support for the effort. With the offical okay from the town, police and fire, the plan has taken shape. Berlin Congregational Church has offered its hall to use as a work station to set up the luminaria bags. There will be a work night, Tuesday, Dec. 21 beginning at 6 p.m. The Berlin fire departments will lend a flatbed truck to the effort and will be carrying the candles (set in bags with a sand base) to the street, along with a Santa to preside over the installation.

Last minute shopping challenge: one hour, $100, Berlin

No need to panic, help is just around the corner By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen

Except for the super-organized few, who have all their shopping done by Thanksgiving, most of us have found ourselves, short on ideas, cash, and time when the Big Day bears down. While the scenario about to unfold is (somewhat) hypothetical, it could be real. To help you out and to test myself, I devised a holiday shopping challenge. One hour, $100, and five presents to buy - in Berlin - for a variety of people, ages, and situations. Crazy? Oh yeah. Also, no gift certificates allowed and keep

Public hearing will detail high school plan

The Town Council and the Board of Education have voted in favor of moving forward with a nearly $70 million plan to renovate and expand Berlin High School. The plan by Silver + Petrucelli Associates includes renovations, additions and addresses code and accessibility issues. The cost is subject to partial reimbursement by the state. A public hearing will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 21 at Town Hall followed by a Town

Council meeting. The new plan incorporates code renovations and most of the program improvements from Option 1, while scaling back “renovate as new” features of the previous Option 2. The new plan is meant to address several concerns such as the limited availability of science labs, the lack of space that can ensure privacy when needed, problems with air

quality, lack of space for special education, and inadequate fields. In addition, there are code and accessibility issues with the facility. Improving vehicle circulation and parking are included as well. According to the architects report: The plan makes significant square footage cuts and cost reductions from Option 2 while meeting the educational needs of the high school now and in the foreseeable future.

One of the issues, with previous plans, was that the square footage was above what was allowed for certain reimbursement rates. The revised plan reduces the square footage by 25,000 square feet. Cost reduction is about $13.3 million less than Option 2. The council voted five to two in favor of moving forward with the pub-

Kensington location great as movie set, says local star By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen

Homecoming, a psychological thriller, was shot entirely on location in Kensington

earlier this month. The movie stars Berlin resident, Dave Lounder. The actor is making a name for himself with appearances in several movies produced by

up and coming directors; including Robert Nemere who produced Homecoming and Slaughter Weekend, which also featured Lounder. “I liked the look of the town, I just liked the town. I thought it would be great as small town America – I hope to bring some larger budget productions here,” said Nemere, of Nemeremedia of

Wethersfield, who credited Lounder with suggesting and facilitating shooting here. The movie was filmed primarily at locations on Main Street and vicinity, including Kensington Pizza. The film was shot using high-tech equipment, “Hollywood standard” brought in from Boston. It was filmed over

three long days in early December with about a dozen people involved in the project. The film will be shown in Manchester and Real Art Ways in Hartford, for starters, and possibly to larger distribution if it fares well at the festivals. “It’s a short film and we

Snow removal ordinances The Public Works Department announced the local ordinances that apply to the removal of ice and snow from public roadways. Property owners are not allowed to shovel, throw or plow ice and snow from private property into, or across a public street. These actions are strictly prohibited and subject to a written warning and/or $100 fine as noted in the Town of Berlin Municipal Code. Residents are responsible to clear snow and ice from any public sidewalk fronting along their property. All sidewalks are to be cleared and/or sanded within 24 hours of the completion of street plowing operations. Failure to comply will subject the abutting property owner to a written warning and/or $100 fine as noted in the Town of Berlin Municipal Code. No Parking bans become effective automatically (or at the discretion of the director of public works) whenever there is an accumulation of four inches or more of snow and ice on any of the streets of the town. No Parking bans will terminate no sooner than eight hours after any snowstorm, or as directed by the director of public works. Any vehicle left parked on the street after such No Parking ban has taken effect, will be towed and subject to a fine and all towing and storage charges. For more information, call the Public Works Department at (860) 828-7022.

Beware of crooks carrying clipboards, police warn

Berlin police reported two incidents last week regarding would-be intruders who approached homes carrying clipboards; a guise to gain entry to the residences. In the latest incident, police responded to a burglary in progress at a residence on Simms Road Dec. 9 at about 9:54 a.m. According to the Berlin Police Department, two men wearing blue coveralls came to the door, one of them holding a clipboard. When the homeowner answered the door, one of the men forced his way past her and ran into the house while putting a ski mask on. The second man then entered the home and was confronted by the husband in the hallway enabling the wife to exit the home and call for help. Both

men fled the scene in a small boxy metallic grey sedan heading north toward New Britain. Evidence was recovered at the scene and the investigation is ongoing. CitizenOpinion Letters to the Editor

Soccer fields fail

To the editor: As a long-time member and coach of Berlin Youth Soccer, I have to take issue with the quality and quantity of soccer fields available for use by our kids in Berlin. There are only two yearround soccer-only fields in town, Sage Soccer and Percival. I can’t count Sage Front because the town doesn’t consider it a soccer field, but rather a parking lot. Like every other sport in town, we share fields. Hubbard, Dennehy, and Sage II are baseball/softball fields that we are permitted to use in the fall only. Sage football is available only sporadically. To remove Sage Baseball as a soccer option in the fall is short-sighted. It isn’t a matter of “being able to experience playing under the lights” as Coach Rob Manzo states. We don’t have enough fields for all of our kids, and

the ones we do have are inferior at best. As a high school and travel coach, I can state unequivocally that the quality of Berlin’s soccer fields are below average. Coach Leo Veleas states that a serious injury might occur in the outfield of Zipadelli. I certainly hope he is wrong, but someone needs to take a serious look at Sage Front and BHS West and tell me how the conditions of those fields are in the best interest of our kids either. Why not put the land across the street from BHS to better use and build a baseball/softball only complex there? Then turn Sage into soccer/football only. Think of the bus money we’ll save at the very least from not having to transport our athletes there every day to practice and play. Rich Aroian Berlin

High school hearing To the editor: Town Council was advised at our last meeting on Dec. 7 that a revised plan regarding the renovation of Berlin High School had been completed. This new proposal was developed and approved by the Public Building Commission working together with town staff and professional architects and engineers. In accordance with the process outlined in the Town Charter, the Public Building Commission first forwarded the new plan to the Board of Education for their review. The Board of Education has approved this revised plan and has stated that it meets the Board of Education’s Statement of Need. The plan was then forwarded to the Town Council See Letters, next page

Safe teen driving law a success, DeFronzo says Fatality and accident rate has dropped The state Department of Motor Vehicles recently announced that fatal accident rates for teen drivers has reached its lowest number in more than a decade. In DeFronzo 2009, the state saw a 62 percent reduction in fatal accidents for 16 and 17-year-old drivers. “The goal of the legislation we passed two years ago was to discourage teens from engaging in potentially dangerous behavior when behind the wheel and to encourage parents to take a active role in the development of safe teenage driving habits,” DeFronzo said. “By that standard, the law we passed has been very successful. I’m thankful to the partnership for this recognition, but moreover, this success is a testament to the many people

who put in hours of work to craft a comprehensive bill that would deliver real results.” At a ceremony at the state capitol in Hartford last week, to kick off Teen Safe Driving Awareness Week, state Senator Donald DeFronzo (D-New Britain) was recognized by a coalition of transportation partners for his commitment to promoting safe teen driving and reducing teen motor vehicle crashes in the state of Connecticut. The award was presented jointly by !MPACT, the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, the Connecticut Teen Driving Safety Partnership and Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital. In 2008, Senator DeFronzo was a key player in the effort to pass a package of teen driving reforms following several high-profile automobile accidents involving teenage drivers. The legislation included changes to the graduated licensing process, increased training requirements, stronger penalties for traffic violations and increased parental involvement in the training process. Connecticut is also exceeding a recent national trend in the direction of fewer fatal accidents for drivers in this age group. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in October that the number of 16 and 17-yearold drivers involved in fatal crashes decreased by 36 percent from 2004 to 2008. Connecticut has seen a 54 percent reduction in these fatal crashes from 2005 to 2009. Additionally, the state has seen a 16.5 percent reduction in all accidents in which a 16 or 17-year-old driver was at fault for 2008, when the new laws were first adopted and

Holidays provide prime opportunities for crooks

Tis’ the season…to take precautions. The Berlin Police Department reminds you this holiday season to lock and secure your valuables. With the holiday season upon us, police departments across Connecticut are reporting a steady increase in the number of vehicle break-ins and residential burglaries. Though this trend is not unusual, one can argue that it is partially attributed to the ease in which criminals can transport and re-sell your valuables though the internet or to area pawn shops. More often than not, the items targeted include your most sentimental jewelry and personal electronics. The best precaution you can take against a burglary is to lock your windows and doors every time you exit your vehicle or leave your home. Unfortunately, that is not always enough and someday you might find yourself the victim of such a crime. As times change, police are seeking more input and assistance from the public to help solve criminal activity. One of the easiest and most effective safety pre-cautions you

Letters Continued from page 16 for the purpose of setting a Public Hearing, per Town Charter, to consider bonding the necessary funds to commence and complete this project. As a result, a public hearing has been set for Dec. 21 at 6 p.m. to be held in the Town Council chambers at Berlin Town Hall. At this very important Dec. 21 public hearing the plans will be presented in detail to the Town Council and any members of the public in attendance. Mayor Salina, Town Councilors Bob Dacey, Rachel Rochette, Bill Rasmussen and I urge you to attend this public hearing to learn more about the proposed plan and to take the opportunity to offer your input and thoughts. If you are unable to attend on the 21st, please take the time to visit the Town of Berlin’s website where the plans are available in great detail to any and all or view the public hearing when the tape is broadcast on the local access channel. As always please feel free to contact any of us directly. Steve Morelli Deputy Mayor

can do today is to compile a detailed inventory, including photographs and serial numbers, of all your valuables. Without such information, the likelihood of reuniting you and your property greatly diminishes. Customarily, this task has been done with a pad a paper; however, in this day and age it can be as simple as snapping a few digital photographs of each item including its serial number. For jewelry, a photograph of the piece including any engravings or personal markings becomes invaluable in the identification process. Once compiled, this information can be saved on a jump drive or DVD and stored in a safe location. Being able to provide our department with serial numbers and photographs will greatly assist us in identifying a suspect and recovering your items. Anyone wanting more information about how to document property can contact the Detective Division of the Berlin Police Department at (860) 828-7080. (Submitted by the Berlin Police Department.)

Awaiting battle To the editor: It was Thanksgiving eve, the stands were full, the air was crisp and lights were shining bright, as the two football teams were ready for battle. The only things missing were the clubs and frats New Britain had in my day at the New Britain High School working around the stadium, wearing their club colors and letters, t.k., the Lords Club, the Earls, the Reebs, t.s., the Royal Knights, a.d.s., and the Girls Club Tri-Hi Y. Those clubs are no more, but are remembered. That afternoon, in Beehive Field parking lot, tents were set up, people were tailgating like at a pro football game, and you could smell the food cooking into New Britain and Berlin. New Britain High School vs. Berlin High School is a rivalry that will be bigger than Thanksgiving Day when New Britain High School played Bulkeley High School from Hartford. It’s a football game that will become one of the most popular football rivals in Connecticut high school football. Now the score is tied, one

to one in games. So let the two teams get ready and train for next year’s Thanksgiving eve battle, as a number of fans who were born in New Britain and went to school there now live in Berlin, including myself, await fall 2011, the Thanksgiving eve battle. Hank Pustelnik Berlin

Join us To the editor: I would like to express my gratitude to the tens of thousands of people across the state who help to make Girl Scouting in Connecticut possible. The support our volunteers give through their time, talents, and generous donations is both appreciated and needed. At Girl Scouts of Connecticut our mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. To succeed, we depend on dedicated volunteers from every town and neighborhood in Connecticut. We have many amazing and inspiring volunteers, but we need more. Due to a shortage of adult volunteers, there are girls in your town who are waiting for a Girl Scout troop

As we enter this season of giving, please consider giving your time to make a difference in a girl’s life. With the guidance of caring adults, more than 44,000 Girl Scouts across this state are discovering themselves and the needs in their community, connecting with others to find solutions through cooperation, and taking action to make the world a better place. A network of involved adults in a child’s life can help her become the type of person she wants to be in the

world, showing her that her actions today play a role in determining her future. Sharing a little of your time and talents with a girl can help her develop life skills, discover the thrill of accomplishment, and encourage her to believe in herself and her dreams. Toys and video games may be forgotten by next year, but the influence one caring adult has on a child will last a lifetime. Please join us as we change the world, one girl at a time. Christmas Continued from page 1 Earlier this year, Rose wrote about the idea in a column in The Citizen and has been moving forward since then. “I’ve received a wonderful response from citizens wanting to participate. She got the idea from another small town, Winchester Vt., that had its luminaria event featured in Yankee Magazine. “I thought it would be neat for Berlin to have such a tradition. Rose contacted organizers there to get advice on how to proceed. In that town, people contribute to the purchase of the supplies for the luminaria. However, Rose wasn’t going to let finances stand in the way of her vision. “I said ‘no matter what, I’m going to do this’, Rose said. “It will all work out. I am so excited. Currently, she has about a dozen people helping her and manpower and donations are

welcome. “Volunteers will definitely be needed to organize the bags and distribute them, Rose said. The luminaria will be placed curbside and burn for up to 15 hours. Also, these will need to be removed the next day. Rose said, at this time, the event isn’t tied to any organization or charity or cause. “It’s just a celebration of life, our town and United States lives we’ve lost during 9/11 and our wars. To help with the project call Chris Rose at (860) 6908869 or email her at chrisbrose@comcast.net. In case of inclement weather, the event will be cancelled.

to the small business path. Here’s the set-up. It’s two days before Christmas. I’ve smugly finished shopping for spouse, kids, parents, grandparents, siblings and close friends. Then it hits me. The people I forgot. People I care about. People who will expect “a little something.” Here’s the list: a sister-inlaw; an elderly female neighbor who feeds my cat when I’m away; a three year-old niece and her 14 year-old brother, kids you rarely see, who happen to be coming by this Christmas; and my

sports-nut cousin who helps me with the yard, he’s 34 and lives with his parents. (Identities slightly changed to protect the innocent.) I quickly calm myself down by realizing, as I look through the pages of The Citizen, that there are dozens of local shops with a surprising diversity of goods. All it will take is some creativity, because the resources are there; grocery stores, sporting goods, hardware, consignment shops, liquor stores, specialty shops and lots of other possibilities. Still, I only have a lunch hour and 100 bucks. My first stop is Kensing-

gifts: camera bags and a wide range of accessories. The dilemma: My sisterin-law has everything already and lots more money than I do. An acrylic frame for a panoramic photo, just under $12, is going to do the

trick. I have a great wide shot photo I took of her kids at Misquamicut Beach last summer. Something personal, surprising and cheap. Perfect.

Shopping

The Berlin Citizen has distribution boxes for the weekly newspaper at two locations in town: at Connecticut Tire, 96 Webster Square Road (across from Powerhouse Gym) and on Brook Street, next to the U.S. Post Office in Kensington. This is in addition to the regular mailed home delivery. There is no charge for the newspaper at these boxes. Customers can also continue to pick up newspapers at Roger’s Marketplace and at The Citizen’s office at 979 Farmington Avenue.

er. I go for the fruit basket. It’s practical, looks pretty and it’s in good taste, literally. Four presents down, one to go, as I stumble into Ken’s Card and Collectibles, 202 New Britain Rd. “Help.” Owner Ken Asal has plenty of experience with last minute shoppers. He’s got everything a Red Sox or Yankee fan could want. But I have no idea which my cousin is. Asal comes up with a solution. The UConn Fiesta Bowl shirts are going fast. At almost $30, this item is a little outside my budget but I still have money leftover and time was running out. Sold. Shopping Berlin’s smaller stores is relaxing and rewarding. My $20 limit for each present was, for the most part, right on target, there are many good choices in that range. Mission accomplished. Merry Christmas!

Wrestling Preview

Berlin has solid core, high hopes By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen

The Berlin High School boys basketball team opened its season this week. The following takes a look at the 2010-11 Redcoats: Coach: Mike Veneziano (second year). Assistants: John Capodice, Joe Serfass, Ryan Ott. Last year: The Redcoats fell to Weaver, 57-54, in the opening round of the CIAC Class L state tournament and wrapped up the year with a mark of 12-10. Key losses: Brian Malloy. Also, senior Rich Conway transferred to a private school. This season: Berlin returns its leading scorer and rebounder in Max DeLorenzo. The senior guard/forward is closing in on his 1,000th point and 500th rebound. DeLorenzo has averaged some 18 points per-game over the past two years. Mike Rector is another key returnee. The speedy senior guard netted nine points per-game as a junior, and is a defensive standout.

Also back this season is junior Tommy Undercuffler. A 6-foot-3 center, Undercuffler collected nine rebounds per-game last year. Rounding out the Redcoat starting five are 6-foot-5 junior forward/center Bobby Mozzicato and senior point guard Kevin Stritch. Vying for time this winter will be seniors Kyle Kureczka (forward) and Dave Balfore (guard), juniors Colin King (guard) and Jeremy DeSimone (guard/forward), sophomores Jeff Sylvester (forward) and Nick Tara (guard) and freshman Mitch Williams (forward). DeLorenzo, Rector and Stritch are team captains. Outlook: Coach Veneziano likes his team’s attitude, and points out that the Redcoats are physically strong. Berlin has several varsitytested players and some proven scorers, as well. However, the locals don’t have a great deal of height, and will find themselves out-sized in the paint at times. Also, the Redcoats have little varsity experience coming off the bench. See Basketball, next page

Once again, team’s numbers are down By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen The Berlin High School wrestling team kicked off its season this week. The following takes a look at the 2010-11 Redcoats. Co-coaches: Dave Tremblay (fourth year, 48-29), C.J. McCormack (first year). Assistants: Barbara Breslin, B.J. Madey, Dan Madey, Jon Fiorillo. Last year: The Redcoats finished ninth at the CIAC Class M state tournament. Key losses: Jack Banks, Dan Cirullo, Andrew Soneson, Chad Keyworth, Mike Campisi. This season: Berlin has some rugged talent back, including seniors Mason Powers, Will Matuszak and Shaun Sullivan. Powers finished second at 215 pounds in Class M last year. Matuszak and Sullivan also placed at the 2010 Class M championships. Matuszak was fifth at 135. Sullivan placed fourth at 125. Powers and Sullivan went on to compete in the State Open. Other experienced guys back for

the Redcoats are Anthony Squitieri and Anthony Vinci. Powers, Matuszak, Sullivan and Squitieri are team captains. Because of Dave Tremblay’s work obligations, he and fellow BHS alumnus C.J. McCormack will share coaching duties this season. Outlook: Berlin has a solid group of seniors and a talented freshmen class. However, the team is, once again, low in numbers. Tremblay is not prognosticating about the Redcoats’ chances this fall. “We will see,” he said. “We’re not going to be the best team,” McCormack said, “but we’re getting there.” Berlin competes in the Central Connecticut Conference South Division, where Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern appear to be the teams to beat. The Redcoats may encounter some bumps in the road this season, but McCormack sees brighter days ahead. “I’ve been calling it Berlin 2.0,” he said. “Within two years I hope to be state title contenders.”

Boys Swimming Preview

Redcoats have sights set on a repeat By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen

The Berlin High School boys swim team opens its season Friday, Dec. 17. The following takes a look at the 2010-11 Redcoats.

Coach: Eileen Thurston (sixth year, 36-31). Assistants: Jenn Backus, Dan Thurston. Last year: The Redcoats claimed the Central Connecticut Conference South Division championship and

finished 10th at the CIAC Class M state meet. Key losses: Andrew Thurston, Brian Quinn, Stephen Switzer, Kevin La, Josh Zaniewski, Ted Benoit, Drew Salimeno, Andrew Lomaglio, Franz Grunbaum. This season: Powering Berlin will be seniors Kevin Kozikowski (200 and 100 butterfly), Taylor Bosse (100 breaststroke), Chris Cefaratti (100 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 100 backstroke), Ryan Newport (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke), Vinny Fischer (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 individual med-

ley), Kyle Nelson (100 freestyle, 100 butterfly) and Josh Paradis (diving), junior Jakub Cwieka (diving) and sophomore Dan Klotz (50 and 100 freestyle). Kozikowski and Klotz are State Open qualifiers. Nelson, Fischer and Paradis are Class M qualifiers. Kozikowski, Cefaratti and Newport are team captains. Outlook: The Redcoats are a hard-working, determined bunch. However, having lost several athletes to graduation, the locals have lots of holes to fill.

Still, Coach Thurston has set the bar high; she expects to repeat as CCC South division champ. The biggest hurdle standing in the way of that goal appears to be Middletown. “I am looking forward to a fantastic season with a great group of guys. They are working very hard already, and are a determined group who want to meet our goal of repeating as CCC South champions,” Thurston said. “H2O — two parts heart, one part obsession — is our motto.”

The winner of each division advances to the district level, and will have the chance to move on to the regional and state competition. Still, Veneziano believes his guys can compete with anybody in the Central Connecticut Conference South Division, where Maloney is pegged as the team to beat. Right out of the gate this winter, Berlin faces some tough opponents, including Maloney, Newington and New Britain. “After our first five games we’ll have a better understanding of where we are, and where we need to be,” Veneziano said.

Ice Hockey Preview

Co-op expects to build on early successes By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen

The Newington-Berlin ice hockey team kicked off its season this week. The following takes a look at the local co-op. Coach: Dave Harackiewicz (11th year). Assistants: Lou Grubin, Paul Helenski, Craig Lewis.

Last year: NewingtonBerlin claimed both the Central Connecticut Conference South Division regular season and tournament titles. The co-op lost to Northwest Catholic, 2-1 in double-overtime, in the quarterfinals of the CIAC Division III state tournament. Key losses: Dan Vasquez, Matt Lynch, Sean Roche,

key newcomer. Richard, Coco and Newington’s Alec Tremblay are team captains. Outlook: NewingtonBerlin has a strong and deep front line and defensemen who are also offense-mind-

ed. However, Coach Harackiewicz is a bit concerned about where his team’s goals will come from, consistently. Still, the veteran head man believes his team will

Timberlin head pro job offered to Bayram, negotiations under way By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen

Marc Bayram appears poised to become Timberlin Golf Course’s next head professional, replacing Jeff Coderre, who resigned Bayram in August.

At press time, Bayram and the town were in the midst of negotiating his contract. Town Manager Denise McNair said Monday things were moving right along on that front, and she expects Bayram to be named head pro, officially, when the town council meets Tuesday, Dec. 21. The town received some 25 proposals for the Timberlin job. Five people were brought in for interviews.

The field was then whittled to two. Bayram impressed the sixperson interview panel, which included McNair, Director of Golf at Timberlin, Jon Zuk, and the town’s Human Resources Director, Denise Bard. “He is extremely capable and very excited to have this opportunity,” McNair said of Bayram, who most recently worked as an assistant pro at Shuttle Meadow Country

recalling some of the comments made. “We heard all sorts of things, including about the mayor — who is not involved in hiring.” McNair hopes that people who decided Bayram’s hiring is a mistake will give him a chance to prove himself. As for Paladino, the town manager wishes him well. “He’s a wonderful example of a young person who has done very well and who has a lot of potential.”
