Currently he is painting on PVC and transferring it to canvas; this way, the artist says, the colors are more luminous, and some of the pictures become more malleable: For example the work “Being” appears concave, something like Gotthard Graubner’s “reverse” color space bodies.

Awe’s paintings oscillate between figurative and abstract; for his generation there is of course no need to decide one specific “direction” or another. His figures - often formed by the white contours of omission, making them appear very distanced - seem to be taken from the glossy photographs of beautiful bodies from the world of sports. They appear almost as “abstract” as the “splish-splash” paint waves in the other non-figurative paintings, one of which is not titled “IASUKOH“, or “HOKUSAI” backwards for nothing – the early 19th century Japanese artist whose “waves” have become something like the “model wave” of the Moderns. Presently, it is Awe’s non-figurative work that seems to dominate, so a look around for comparisons stands to reason: the (apparent) restriction to gesture and material is of course no invention of our time, and of course Awe’s gesture is not so carefree either: the idea of Abstract Expressionism and the Informel bears on the two dominant art trends after the Second World War.

Francis studies Botany, Psychology and Medicine at Berkeley before joining the American Air Force in 1943. In an emergency landing he suffers a severe back injury that leaves him tied to a bed for over a year. It is during this time the Francis begins to paint under the influence of David Park and develops his own abstract style. After convalescing, he returns to Berkeley.

Francis studiert Botanik, Psychologie sowie Medizin in Berkeley, bevor er 1943 zur amerikanischen Luftwaffe geht. Bei einer Notlandung zieht er sich eine schwere Rückenmarksverletzung zu, die ihn über ein Jahr lang ans Bett fesselt. Während dieser Zeit beginnt Francis unter dem Einfluss von David Park zu malen, und hat bereits einen eigenen abstrakten Stil entwickelt als er nach seiner Genesung nach Berkeley zurückkehrt.

Francis travels around the world. He visits Japan numerous times throughout the 1960s, where influences inspire paintings with a strong Minimalist tendency.

Sam Francis designs, among others, a mural for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1985) and the German Bundestag in Bonn (1992). He actively protests the Vietnam War and in 1987 founds the “Sam Francis Medical Research Center” to research environmentally-caused diseases.

Your “Underground Paintings” are first painted on PVC and then transferred to canvas. Despite the variety of materials the base remains classic. How do you see the relationship between the situation on the street and the exhibition space?

Removing the boundary between street and exhibition space is something that I would welcome. But as long as we have a “white cube” situation in the majority of galleries and exhibition spaces, the street will stay in front of the exhibition space. Street Art works better in the urban sphere, especially as an artistic intervention and moment of surprise.

With their extreme colorfulness and moving surface structures, your paintings have a strong presence; they literally jump out at the eye. What’s more, titles such as “Brennen für Deutschland (Burning for Germany)” or “Culture Deportation” clearly point to a political dimension in the work. The message is very important to you, yet it can’t be read at first glance – you have to look through the layers of your images to come to it. Are the titles something like an added layer?

Yes, I would say so. I think it is always more interesting when the artist shies away from making things too obvious and keeps a little secret. All of my paintings are of an autobiographical nature and many of my more figurative works have hidden socio-critical content. Titles like “Treibgut (Drifting Goods)”, “verschwende Deine Zeit (waste your time)”, 10

“Ways of Life”, “Being”, “Meeting Freedom” and “Das gute Leben (The good Life)” are only there to provide the viewer with food for thought. I’m always happy to talk and answer questions in person.

You studied sports and art. Sports and movement play an important role in your images, in the “Springer (Jumper)” series, for example, and in the installation “Struggle”. At the same time, the amount of effort and physical exertion in the painting process can be intensely felt. How important is the physical aspect to your work?

For me, physical movement is an important counterweight to an artistic existence, both physically and psychologically.

The worlds of art and sports hardly ever overlap. In my paintings, I try to depict a certain rhythm, a balanced combination of swinging lines, forms and colors. I always hope that my intensity can be felt in the painting itself when it’s on its own.

You are one of the few artist born in Berlin who also live here. How has the city influenced you, and how does it continue to influence you?

Berlin is a city of constant change. It offers a gateway to a wide variety of lifestyles, very similar to your collage method for the About Change, Collection. Besides the many exhibitions, Berlin is also the world capital of contemporary art production. The city is very ambivalent; here anyone can find his or her own brand of happiness. Here, the rich live next to the poor, no one minds the sexual orientation of the other and there is still creative freedom to preserve!

Besides your two professors, Georg Baselitz and Daniel Richter, who were your biggest influences?

I have been inspired and influenced by my surroundings, friends and family, many travels, contemporary art, Graffiti, basketball, hip-hop music, social injustice, open and creative people and lateral thinkers. The streets of Berlin were and are my creative teacher.

ARCHÄOLOGE IN ATMOSPHÄRISCHEN FARBLANDSCHAFTEN Auf Initiative von Christiane zu Salm: Ein Gespräch zwischen Christiane Rekade und Christian Awe, Mai 2009 In der Doppelausstellung „Abstrakte Welten“ in der Galerie Berlin Art Projects werden zurzeit Deine Arbeiten gemeinsam mit Werken von Sam Francis gezeigt. Diese Kontextualisierung wirft ein neues Licht sowohl auf Deine Arbeiten als auch auf die von Sam Francis. Worin liegt für Dich die Aktualität seiner Arbeiten?

Sam Francis’ Arbeiten sind dynamische Bildwelten von leuchtender Farbigkeit. Seine individuell gestische Malweise, das Abstrakt-Expressive und vor allem die enorme Lust am Experimentieren machen die Arbeiten für mich aktuell.

Wie wichtig sind das Abstrakte und Expressive in Deinen Arbeiten?

Bereits in meinen figurativen Arbeiten war ich ja im Detail abstrakt. Für mich liegt das zu Erkundende der Malerei im Spannungsfeld von Figuration und Abstraktion. Das Expressive spiegelt für mich dabei meine individuelle Handschrift und derzeitigen Gefühle wider.

Die Ausstellung zeigt Arbeiten Deiner Serie „Underground Paintings“. Woher kommt der Titel der Serie?

Zum einen habe ich bereits im Alter von 11 Jahren mit Graffiti und Street Art angefangen, ich komme also aus dem kreativen „Untergrund/Underground“ der Kunstszene, zum anderen sind meine neuen Arbeiten auf PVC gemalt, ja Bodenbelag/Untergrundmaterial als Träger meines künstlerischen Schaffens. Die Verbindung aus beiden ergab für mich diesen, wie ich finde, griffigen Titel der Serie. Das PVC hat dabei den Vorteil, dass die Farbe mehr auf der Oberfläche steht, sie wird leuchtender – Graffiti ähnlich. Auch bestimmte technische Dinge wie das Schneiden mit dem Holzschnittmesser sowie leicht schräge oder in den Raum gewölbte Formate sind mir mit diesem Material möglich.

Deine Arbeiten entstehen durch Schichtungen von Materialien und Farbe. Diese Schichten legst Du anschließend durch Abschaben und Auskratzen wieder frei. Geht es Dir dabei um Verdecken und Freilegen?

Meine Bilder bestehen aus bis zu 15 übereinander liegenden Farbschichten. Mitunter sind die aufgetragenen Farben so flüssig, dass sie tagelange Trocknungszeiten haben. Durch meine spezielle Technik des Rauskratzens / Auswaschens hole ich tiefer Liegendes wieder ans Tageslicht. Dabei entstehen feinste Farbmischungen, neue Formen und Farbzusammenstellungen. Ich lade jeden ein, sich meine Bilder einmal live für längere Zeit genauer zu betrachten. Wie beim Blick in die Wolken beginnt das Gehirn, Dinge, Formen und Figuren zu assoziieren.

Das erinnert mich an Street Art – wo Tags und Graffitis, aber auch Plakate und Sticker immer wieder übereinander geklebt und gemalt werden. Da fallen mir auch zum Beispiel die Arbeiten von Klara Liden ein, die Poster, die immer wieder übereinander geklebt wurden, von den Mauern nimmt und sie ausstellt. Was bedeutet Dir das Schichten?

Das fühlt sich manchmal so an, als wäre ich mein eigener künstlerischer Archäologe. Ich stöbere in den atmosphärischen Farblandschaften, Rinnsalen und materiellen Erhebungen. Dabei lege ich lang Verschollenes fein säuberlich wieder frei und präsentiere es der Öffentlichkeit.

Du bist – wie viele KünstlerInnen Deiner und auch meiner Generation – über Street Art und Graffiti zur Kunst gekommen und hast zum Teil die Techniken der Street Art auf die Leinwand übertragen. Was haben die unterschiedlichen Materialen und Techniken, die Du benutzt, für eine Bedeutung in Deiner Arbeit?

Es ist ein fortwährendes Experiment und eine Weiterentwicklung meiner künstlerischen Fähigkeiten. Die Kombination teils ungewöhnlicher Materialien wie z.B. selbst hergestellte Acrylfarbe, Tusche, verschiedenste Sprühlacke, Stencil, Marker, Buntstifte, Wachsölpastelle u.v.v.m. ermöglicht mir eine differenzierte Arbeitsweise. Ich erschaffe mir ein Lernfeld, das mir ermöglicht, Werke mit höchstmöglicher Leuchtkraft, mit satten Kontrasten, sanften Nuancen und differenzierten Oberflächenstrukturen entstehen zu lassen.

AWE UND FRANCIS Wenn man sich mit Christian Awe unterhält, dann nimmt einen sogleich der unbekümmerte Charme dieses Künstlers

Nicht nur, dass die verwendeten Farbmaterialien sehr unterschiedlich sind: Sprühlacke, Acrylfarben können mit Tusche

und Wasserfarben kombiniert werden, Kritzeleien mit Eddingstiften und Wachsölpastellen können aufgebracht und mit dem Messer wieder abgeschabt und herausgekratzt werden.

Unterschiedliche Alltagsmaterialien und Fundstücke werden, in Pollockscher Manier, verarbeitet, Stofffetzen, Kartons, Servietten und Gardinen, die, wenn man über sie sprüht, regelmäßige Musterfragmente auf der Bildoberfläche hinterlassen. Zur Zeit wird auf PVC gemalt, das auf Leinwand aufgebracht wird. Durch das PVC würden die Farben mehr leuchten, sagt der Künstler, und einige der Bilder werden plastischer: So erscheint z.B. das Werk „Being“ konkav, etwa in der Art „umgekehrter“ Farbraumkörper Gotthard Graubners.

Awes Bilder oszillieren zwischen Figuration und Abstraktion; für seine Generation gibt es natürlich keine Entscheidung für die eine oder andere „Richtung“. Seine Figuren, deren oft weiße Konturen durch Auslassungen und Auskratzungen entstehen, was sie sehr distanziert erscheinen lässt, scheinen den Hochglanzfotografien der Sportwelt schöner Körper zu entstammen. Sie wirken fast ebenso „abstrakt“ wie die „Splish-Splash“-Farbwogen auf den anderen nicht figurativen Bildern, deren eines nicht umsonst „IASUKOH“ heißt, also „HOKUSAI“ in der Gegenrichtung gelesen – der japanische Künstler des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts, dessen „Woge“ so etwas wie die „Modell-Welle“ der Moderne geworden ist. Zur Zeit scheinen bei Awe die nicht figürlichen Arbeiten zu dominieren, und da liegt es nahe, sich ein bisschen umzuschauen und nach Vergleichbarem zu suchen: Die (scheinbare) Beschränkung auf Geste und Material ist ja keine Erfindung unserer Zeit, und so ganz unbekümmert ist Awes Tun natürlich auch nicht: Die Idee des Abstrakten Expressionismus und des Informel, der dominierenden Kunstströmungen der Zeit nach dem 2. Weltkrieg, beruht darauf.
