Festival Lineup on Pages 16 & 17
EACH SUMMER , Berkshire Busk! transforms our downtown into a vibrant openair stage, with buskers (street performers who perform for tips) bringing music, magic, and entertainment all over downtown.
On June 27, for ten weekends, Friday and Saturday nights come alive starting at 6:30 PM. You’ll also find buskers at the Saturday morning Great Barrington Farmers’ Market, and on Saturday afternoons at Berkshire Mountain Distillers in Sheffield.
This guide is your invitation to enjoy the festival and explore our fascinating town. Dine at one of our exceptional restaurants, and step into a shop or boutique you won’t find anywhere else.
You’ll find the full festival schedule on pages 16 and 17. This guide is also filled with our personal recommendations on where to eat, shop, and explore while you’re here. Great Barrington has been called “The Best Small Town in America”—and we think you’ll see why.
Berkshire Busk! exists because of the incredible support within this community. We’re especially grateful to the Great Barrington Select Board; Acting Town Manager Chris Rembold; our Police, Fire, and Public Works departments; the Downtown Great Barrington Cultural District; and to the many sponsors and advertisers who help make this festival possible. You’ll find a full list to the left.
The festival is a project of Community Busk, a Great Barrington-based nonprofit organization that helps towns build community and boost local economies through the arts. To learn more, or to support our work, visit www.communitybusk.org.
Whether you’re here for the evening or discovering Great Barrington for the first time, we hope this town—and this festival—bring you joy.

Monday – Saturday Only
There are hundreds of free parking spots in downtown Great Barrington. Note that Railroad Street is closed to traffic from 5:30 to 10 PM on Friday and Saturday nights from June 27 to August 30 for Berkshire Busk! and outdoor dining.
Great Barrington isn’t just the coolest town in the Berkshires — it’s a place where every café, restaurant, and late-night cocktail hideaway has a following of its own. Whether you’re a local looking for a fresh spot to try, or a visitor hoping to experience the town like an insider, we’ve got the scoop.
From quick bites to leisurely dinners, here’s where to eat this summer.
Bizen Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar
17 Railroad Street
A Great Barrington fixture since 1995, Bizen offers a wildly enjoyable array of pun-worthy, creative sushi rolls that may take you longer to read than Moby Dick – but the results are worth it. Be sure to check out the “Berkshire Busketeer” roll, a summer speciality!
Founded by chef and ceramic artist Michael Marcus, Bizen is as much about craftsmanship as it is about cuisine. Every detail, from the handformed sushi to the thoughtfully designed space reflects his artistry. Manager Tasja Keetman, a photographer and biodynamic beekeeper, brings an ethos of sustainability and care to the restaurant’s philosophy.
Their outdoor dining in the summer is wildly popular, particularly during Berkshire Busk! when tables spill out onto the street—so come early and be ready to settle in and enjoy Berkshire Busk! performers as you sip on your saki!
Boba Train 47 Railroad Street (Ste. 3)
Boba Train moved to Railroad Street last year, and we’re so glad they did! Stop in and peruse the many boba teas this cafe is named after, or explore the wide variety of other drinks they offer: fruit teas, frappuccinos, smoothies and lemonades are all sure to be a cool and refreshing treat.
If you’re craving a sweet bite as well, Boba Train has you covered. Stop in to see their selection of
delicious baked goods each day–we recommend the giant cookies in the glass cabinet!
The Elm & Uva Pizza 20 Railroad St/Alleyway
Located right on Railroad Street, The Elm brings a contemporary twist to New England cuisine, aiming for city sophistication with a Berkshire feel. The elegantly restored, century-old mahogany bar is the perfect spot for a drink or a few bites from the bar menu. The full menu offers a rotating selection of stunning seasonal dishes.
Around the corner (and operated by the same owners) is Uva Pizza. Drop in to this casual spot for delicious thin-crust pizzas, fired in an impressively decorated wood-burning stove. Don’t forget to ask your server about the chef’s special pizza of the day.
Look for co-owner Adrian, a familiar face in the restaurant world, whose passion for hospitality shapes both spots. Whether you’re after a refined dinner, a laid-back brunch, or some seriously good pizza, both have outdoor seating—perfect for catching Berkshire Busk! right in the middle of the action.
Marjoram + Roux 47 Railroad Street
If you’re meandering around town before the evening’s festivities, you can find a sweet pick-me-up at the top of Railroad Street from Marjoram + Roux! On top of their selection of teas and espresso drinks, Marjoram + Roux has a fresh and delicious selection of breakfast and lunch options.
Fun fact: When chef Daire Rooney opened this cafe, she named it after her two dogs. You’ll often
(CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE)
see locals enjoying a coffee outside in the sun alongside their own pups. You might even find treats for your furry friends by the register!
At the very top of Railroad Street, Mooncloud is more than a cocktail bar—it’s where head mixologist Billy Jack Paul crafts drinks with the creativity of an artist.
During festival hours, sit outside on the patio and enjoy the performances taking place at the Haddad Subaru Stage on Upper Railroad Street. You’ll often find the Berkshire Busk! production team unwinding here on a Saturday night, sipping on “The Battle of Jalisco” or the “Ruby Slipper” and enjoying a charcuterie board.
With its cozy, intimate vibe and drinks that will make you rethink everything you knew about cocktails, Mooncloud is truly extraordinary. That also means it fills up quickly—but take it from us, it’s worth the wait!
SoCo Creamery has been scooping up happiness in Great Barrington since 2004. This small-batch micro-creamery is known for its super-premium ice cream, made with high-quality ingredients and zero shortcuts, all creatively invented by longtime owner Erik Bruun. Don’t let the line deter you during Berkshire Busk! – SoCo’s incredibly hardworking staff gets your sweet treat in hand in record time!
Soco’s flavor lineup is both classic and wildly creative. You’ll find favorites like Dirty Chocolate, Salted Caramel, and Espresso Cookie, as well as imaginative recipes like Blueberry Honey Lavender or Lemon Poppy! If you get really stuck, their “wheel of indecision” will make the choice for you.
But it’s not just the ice cream that makes SoCo special— check out the sticky notes on the wall. Over the years, visitors have scribbled their thoughts on “courage” —what they have the courage to do, to try, or to dream. It’s a must-read, as well as a must-try place.
Fiesta Bar and Grill 284 Main Street
We at Berkshire Busk! have been sustained by many great meals at Fiesta Bar and Grill! At Fiesta, you’ll find all of your favorite Mexican dishes from tacos to enchiladas and more. Showrunners
Nestor and Sandy draw inspiration from Oaxaca, Mexico, but play with much more than strictly traditional fare.
Their outdoor dining area by the Berkshire Money Management Stage is the perfect place to hang out and be in the middle of all of the festival action! Sit back and sip on their outstanding margaritas, and nosh on the chips and salsa –you’ll be in for a great night.
Situated right across from the entrance to Railroad Street, Fuel Coffee has long been a neighborhood anchor—the kind of place where locals meet over coffee and talk about local politics, business, and where visitors immediately feel like regulars.
Recently taken over by new owners Elan and Lydia Merkel, Fuel is known for its homemade pastries, hearty breakfast sandwiches, and full lunch menu. The Merkels are introducing more evening hours and special events, so check their window for the latest.
We can’t even count the number of Berkshire Busk! planning meetings that we’ve had over steaming cups of coffee at Fuel in the dead of winter—it’s that kind of spot.
Stroll into the Barrington House and you’ll find GB Eats, the perfect spot for a delicious meal no matter the time of day. This cafe serves breakfast all day as well as salads, sandwiches, burgers and more.
The cafe has an impressive bar menu (see: boozy milkshakes!), but our insider tip is that GB Eats is the place to go if you need an early evening dose of caffeine. Their mocha lattes are made with ground chocolate from the iconic Chocolate Springs in Lenox!
Located in the Triplex Cinema, Juju’s is fun, fast and tasty. Opened by local restaurateur Josh Irwin in 2024, it’s a go-to spot for a quick, playful lunch or dinner that never skimps on flavor.
The menu is all crispy and snackable: popcorn chicken, popcorn cauliflower, onion petals, and tater tots, all served with a lineup of bold, housemade sauces. If you’re looking for something fresh, the sumac fattoush salad—a bright, citrusy Middle Eastern salad with pita chips—is our favorite.
Oh, and don’t skip the soft-serve ice cream. The flavors rotate frequently, so there’s always something new!

Wacky Chad’s one-man stunt comedian show is hard to forget. You may recognize his orange-clad figure from juggling on a nine-foot unicycle or backflipping off of pogo sticks at Berkshire Busk! these past 5 years.
Wacky Chad’s show isn’t as easy as it looks–and it doesn’t look easy at all. But as a professional street performer, the flips and tricks are only half the battle.
“The biggest challenge for the tip based/street performer style shows is getting people to really understand what your value is, and the art of asking that is backed up by the art of performnace.” said Chad in a conversation via email. “People that work hard want to feel appreciated. A difficult part is on me, "the asker," aka the street performer, to articulate a quality tip speech that includes all walks of life.” Chad has performed at festivals around the world and on television, including The Gong Show, America’s Got Talent and more. He’s even got his own documentary, “Becoming Wacky Chad,” about his 20+ year-long journey as a performer.
Lucy’s Rendezvous 268 Main Street
Looking for that final nightcap before heading home from Berkshire Busk? Lucy’s Rendezvous has a speakeasy vibe with a blink-and-you’ll-missit entrance in Rubiner’s Alley. On good-weather nights, Lucy’s throws open all its windows for you to enjoy nearby Berkshire Busk! Performances while you sip on your beverage of choice.
Lucy’s opened its doors in 2024 and immediately became a favorite of industry workers, locals, and tourists alike–its 1 a.m. closing time makes this spot the ideal gathering point when other restaurants wind down for the evening. Stop by to enjoy their simple menu of beer and cocktails–and don’t knock the “Pittsfield Mimosa” (a Miller High Life topped with Sunny D) until you try it.
Miller’s Pub 280 Main Street
If you’re worried about missing the “big game” while you’re at the festival, pop into Miller’s Pub on Main Street: they’re sure to have a spot for you to check the score alongside some light bites and a pint.
Miller’s offers local brews, imported UK favorites, an impressive selection of whiskey and so much more in a comfortable, casual atmosphere. Their ample bar seating is great for making like a local and getting to know your neighbors.
Momma Lo’s BBQ 284 Main Street
At Momma Lo’s BBQ, it’s all about soulful Southern flavors. Founded by Loretta “Momma Lo” McClennon who grew up cooking in Chattanooga, Tennessee, this take-out place in the Barrington House alleyway offers ribs, brisket, pulled pork, jerk chicken, and pork belly burnt ends, alongside must-have sides like mac and cheese, collard greens, and cornbread.
Out back, her son Buddha—a rapper known as “Buddha the Great”—can often be found manning the smoker. His big smile and even bigger personality make him as big an attraction as the food.
Though a take-out spot, Momma Lo’s offers limited seating in the alleyway of Barrington House. In the summer, you can grab your meal and enjoy it by our Berkshire Money Management Stage. During Berkshire Busk! festival hours, you’ll have live music to go with your brisket. Since this is a true family affair, where everything is made and smoked by hand, the hours and days they’re open can vary— so be sure to stop by and see what’s smoking!
Number Ten 10 Castle Street
On Castle Street next to the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, Number Ten is a classic American steakhouse experience.
The intimate space features an antique mahogany bar across from a row of wooden booths crafted from reclaimed church pews. The main dining room has exposed brick walls, offering a cozy yet upscale setting. The service is professional and consistent.
Steak lovers will find their fix here, with cuts such as a 14-ounce NY Strip, best enjoyed with sautéed mushrooms, mac n’ cheese, or one of their signature sauces. But there’s more to the menu than just steak—you’ll also find chicken, seafood, and rotating specials. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends as people make their dinner-and-a-show plans with both Berkshire Busk! and The Mahaiwe next door.
At the north end of Main Street, Prairie Whale is a true farm-to-table gem where rustic charm meets serious culinary craft. The name, an old pioneer slang term for pig, hints at the restaurant’s wholeanimal cooking ethos and dedication to locally sourced seasonal ingredients.
Founded by Mark Firth (a trailblazing Brooklyn restaurateur who swapped city life for the Berkshires), Prairie Whale is a charming space with a warm, unpretentious feel. The menu is reinvented weekly (check out their website for the latest iteration) and features New American dishes that highlight the best of Berkshire farms, including produce from their own small garden in Monterey.
Insider’s tip: During the summer, outdoor tables in the front grassy yard are popular but well away from the Berkshire Busk! action. The best move is get there early, put your name on the waiting list, then wander downtown and listen to the buskers until you get a text that your table is ready.

Noah Robertson is a teenage musician from the Whitsundays in Australia. His musical journey has already taken him to places others may only hope to visit over the course of a lifetime–all before being old enough to drive.
“I first picked up the guitar when I was 8 years old in the Bahamas, barefoot on our boat.” said Robertson. Growing up on a sailboat, the singer-songwriter got his start while adventuring through the Mediterranean and Caribbean with his family. Once they docked back home in Australia, he took to busking at outdoor markets by the beach.
Robertson plays both acoustic and electric guitar, utilizing a pedal board and looping to craft his unique sound. His skill took him not only to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music in 2022, but earned him a title in the 2022 Australian National Busking Championships. “I just love the whole vibe of playing/busking on the street,” said Robertson. “I love the feeling as the crowd builds. It's awesome when people start dancing, clapping, moving and getting into it. Sometimes people make requests, and I love when I can play a special song for them.”
OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS, we’ve found that many come to Berkshire Busk! without a clear idea of what it means to “busk”. Busking is the act of performing on the street for tips. Some may picture the classic image of a solo musician playing a guitar–that’s how Ed Sheeran, Tracy Chapman, Phoebe Bridgers and lots of other amazing artists began their musical journey! We hope that by the end of the evening, you’ll feel fully immersed in the fascinating world of busking–and maybe you’ll have spotted the “next big thing” at our festival!
This summer is going to be our best yet. We’re happy to say we have many popular solo artists making their return. To name a few, this summer you can see the 15-year-old Noah Robertson (June 28), an Australian National Busking Champion; local favorite and American Idol alum Katherine Winston (Aug 2, 16, 30); award-winning blues and gospel musician Robin O’Herin (June 27, July 5, July 25, Aug 9) and lots more.
As anyone who has seen a brass band in New Orleans knows, buskers can include larger groups too. The Roots, who began their career by busking on South Street in Philadelphia, are another great example! Here in Great Barrington, we’re pleased our lineup this year includes a wide variety of such acts like bluegrass group The Juckets (July 26), jazz band The Greg Glassman Quartet (July 19), the Berkshire Busk! debut of the Black Legacy Project (August 22), and many more local bands.
Finally, playing an instrument is not a requirement of being a busker. As a bit of a warm-up you’ll find a face painter or balloon twister in front of Robin’s Candy in the afternoon and often at night as well. Our lineup also includes magicians like Just Felice (Aug 9), Darren Yong (Aug 1), as well as fire dancers Luna Faun (June 27) and Opal Raven (June 28, Aug 9).
For some, busking isn’t a hobby or the first step in a career; but it’s their main “gig” and lifestyle. We’re proud to host a variety of circus-style performers who make their living entirely by travelling the world to perform wild stunts on the streets of cities like Boston, London, Toronto, Melbourne, and many more. Some, like Wacky Chad (July 18 & 19), Cate Great (Aug 29 & 30), and Alakazam (Aug 15 & 16) have been mainstays at Berkshire Busk! since the very beginning. Others, like Her Majesty’s Secret Circus (July 4 & 5) and Lessa Hoops (Aug 2) will make their festival debut this summer.
And to celebrate our fifth season, there will be fireworks on August 30 in downtown Great Barrington to end the summer with a bang.
We hope that you walk away from an evening at Berkshire Busk! inspired by these performers’ courage to get out there and make art without any promise of how it will be received. At the heart of busking is the joyful, spontaneous, semiunpredictable magic of a live show in which you and others wandering around downtown Great Barrington become their audience, and the audience becomes an active participant. Since ancient times, busking has been an honored form of performance.
As always, if you enjoy a busker, show them some love by tipping, dancing to their music, or starting a conversation with a stranger! Our festival is made to build a sense of community, and that’s what Great Barrington is all about.

SHOPS & FINDS – Great Barrington is filled with an amazing assortment of completely unique shops, eclectic boutiques, and unexpected treasures. We promise you won’t be bored: there’s not a single national chain downtown, just thoughtfully curated spots run by passionate locals. If you live nearby, we might help you find a gem you’ve yet to discover. And, if you’re just visiting, trust us—the shopping scene here is anything but ordinary.
Bernay Fine Art 296 Main Street
Founded in 2008 in Chicago before making its home in Great Barrington in 2019, the gallery features rotating exhibitions showcasing distinguished artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, glass, and works on paper. If you’re lucky, you’ll see some of Great Barrington local artist Stephanie Anderson’s incredibly lifelike pencil drawings.
This is the kind of place you walk into for one thing and leave with a full bag. Whether you’re a professional artist, a weekend dabbler, or just hunting for the perfect card, this shop has it all— paints, brushes, paper, unique gifts, and the kind of selection you’d expect in a big city.
Robert Lloyd Gallery 34 Railroad Street
A one-of-a-kind shop specializing in vintage barware and illustration art.
Shire Glass 87 Railroad Street
This playful shop tucked around the bend of Railroad Street is part smoke shop accessories
and part art gallery, featuring hand-blown glass pieces by local artists alongside vintage finds, handmade jewelry, and eclectic gifts. Check their socials for news on their latest pop-ups, which frequently include paint-your-own pottery social events!
This is a thoughtfully curated dream for knitters, weavers, and makers; offering yarns, sewing notions, natural dye supplies, and looms. In addition, Hart hosts classes, workshops, and is a wonderful place to connect with others who love working with textiles.
Bon Dimanche 32 Railroad Street
The incredible designers and makers in Bon Dimanche also run Petit Pilou, where you’ll find a wide variety of their charming and whimsical children’s clothes. Bon Dimanche focuses on high-quality fabrics for your little ones as well as innovative designs. You might even find a live screen-printing demonstration going on during the festival from time to time.

In her performances, Opal Raven has a style that I might describe as “goth-circus-cabaret.” With her dark makeup and dangerous props, each act feels like its own, individual Halloween night — after all, as she tells me over Zoom, October is her busiest month of the year. Opal performs sideshows and as a one-woman show across the United States, displaying her unique blend of talents: sworddancing, fire and LED props, snake-charming, and more.
In 2022, Opal joined up with Berkshire Pride for Berkshire Busk! Festival and picked up roadside busking afterwards. “Busk! allows you to have a lot of interactions with the audience and to make them part of the show,” she explains to me. “There’s a bit of magic when it comes to the audience changing.” On a stage, the only light is on the performer and it’s difficult to even see the audience, let alone interact with them. Busk removes that barrier and allows Opal to adapt to the energy of her crowd. The simple act of eye contact or gesturing to an audience member can do so much to enhance a spectator’s experience.

Ryder Cooley, an interdisciplinary artist and regular performer at Berkshire Busk!, believes that live performance is integral to the authenticity of the arts scene: “Every performance is different. I want you to think, ‘this is never gonna happen again – that exact moment in time with these people listening and these people performing.” When Ryder began her career, she did so as an installation and performance artist. Her work focused on evoking disreality and creating dark, dreamlike spaces. Later, she used her talents to form the band Dust Bowl Faeries, bringing listeners into her hauntingly beautiful world. Dust Bowl Faeries doesn’t play the kind of music that you would typically expect to see from buskers. “It’s weird and edgy and experimental,” Ryder says, “I’ve honestly been shocked at how well-received our music is at Berkshire Busk!” One of the beauties of street performance is its ability to expose people to new genres and forms of art they might not otherwise have engaged with. “I think things like Berkshire Busk! and playing outside for the public is really important,” Ryder continues. With Hazel (her taxidermy Ram) and their eclectic fusion music, Dust Bowl Faeries creates an otherworldly experience and introduces attendees to something new and wonderfully different.

Whether he’s juggling chainsaws or fitting his entire body through a tennis racket, Al Millar, otherwise known as ALAKAZAM or “The Human Knot,” specializes in daring circus stunts. His interest goes all the way back to when he was just fourteen years old. His cousin taught him how to juggle and the fascination only grew from there: he was “obsessed (with circus) as some kids would be with video games,” Al recalls. After working behind the scenes at Australia’s Stardust Circus for a few years, Al began his street performance career in 1996 at eighteen years old, turning the streets of Sydney into his own stage. One of the most challenging parts of street performance is that there is “no set audience,” this unpredictability means that a crowd’s attention can be fleeting and incredibly dependent on factors the performer has no control over. So, one of the most valuable skills Al had to learn was the ability to command attention: “Physical skills aside, holding the crowd is the most important skill, and you can’t learn without actually doing it.” Direct engagement with a crowd is honest and all-the-more rewarding for it.
