Dear Fellow Alumni, Friends, and Supporters,

T

his past year has been a year of excitement, appreciation, peace, and love at Berks Catholic. On August 31, 2020, we welcomed students back inside the building for the first time since March 12, 2020. Those five and a half months away from each other were very challenging on our students, faculty, staff, and their families. I am happy to say, we welcomed them with open arms and never looked back.

We are also proud of our graduates, the Class of 2021, which was one of the most competitive classes we have ever had at Berks Catholic. They received 545 offers of admission to 183 universities and are attending 69 institutions in 33 different states, including some of the most selective in the country. The Class of 2021 earned over $19.7 million dollars in scholarships and, collectively, completed over 15,000 hours of service. We should all be thankful for their commitment to their school and their community.

Embarking on our new strategic plan just a few months before the pandemic hit presented a great challenge to our efforts. Not only did we stay focused on our goals, we met each and every one of them head on to ensure continued growth and excellence at Berks Catholic High School. As we approach year three of our five year strategic plan, I would like to personally thank our students, teachers, staff, and all of our wonderful alumni for making Berks Catholic the best school in Berks County and beyond. All of this would not be possible without your prayers, time, talent, and treasure. I am proud to report that we exceeded our goals for the 2020-2021 school year.

It is because of you, our students are able to thrive and achieve so much. Your belief in our mission and your generosity has allowed us the ability to provide a true Christcentered education for our students and their families. It is because of you, we are able to provide an education that is second to none. For all of this, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I thank all of our incredible alumni from Reading Catholic, Central Catholic, Holy Name, and Berks Catholic for your prayers, your love, your support, and your financial commitment to your alma mater and to the students of Berks Catholic High School.

We hold our four Pillars; God, Family, Academics, and Fun, close to our hearts. During the past year, we prioritized God in everything we did at Berks Catholic. We provided opportunities for daily prayer, celebrated weekly Mass with our students, invited our parents to the Franco-Post Auditorium for weekly prayer services, rejuvenated our retreat program, and continued to have school-wide Eucharistic Adoration in the Franco-Post Auditorium and in our Chapel.

With sincere gratitude and a heart filled with love, I respectfully submit to you the 2020-2021 Annual Report.

We once again were able to promote togetherness as a school community with programs and events such as homecoming, our family tailgates, sporting events, school shows, and many other activities. We are currently preparing for our Spring Musical, “Singing in the Rain.” It is definitely a wonderful time to be a part of our Saints family.

William H. Hess, M.Ed. Head of School

May God continue bless you and your families. It’s a great day to be a Saint!

I am also happy and proud to say we were able to provide full in-person instruction for all of our students. Our teachers did an exceptional job getting our students back into a traditional academic routine. In addition, we also continued to offer dual enrollment with Mount St. Mary’s University, where our students have the opportunity to attend virtual classes taught by the college’s professors.

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-8

From the Desk of:

Bob Birmingham I

am thrilled to share the 2020-21 Annual Report for Berks Catholic High School and celebrate who we are as a faith-filled community. Berks Catholic is truly a special place and what we have achieved together this past year shows our true Saints spirit. Our dedication to academic excellence, student success and community involvement was evident in every accomplishment.

Fulfilling our mission and delivering a faith-based academic experience would not have been possible without the dedication of our talented faculty and staff. Their commitment provides opportunities for students to pursue their dreams and achieve their potential. They continue to build on the rich legacy that many others have left before them. The achievements of our alumni community this past year also contributed to our collective success as a community. This annual report reflects on the profound impact last year has had on our community as well as the significant progress we have made during these unprecedented times in our lives.

We continued to navigate a dynamic environment during the pandemic and yet our focus on the well-being of our community and the success of our students did not waver. I have been incredibly proud to see the many ways our students, faculty, staff and alumni have demonstrated resilience and dedication to support our Berks Catholic community throughout the past 12 months.

You, our alumni and friends, played a critical role through your contributions, volunteerism and other ways of support. Because of your philanthropic spirit, Berks Catholic High School remains Strong! Thank you for everything you do. GO SAINTS! Sincerely,

Robert M. Birmingham M. Ed. Director of Institutional Advancement

A Note From:

Betsy Woytovich T

he 2020-2021 school year was challenging to say the least, and class reunions and alumni gatherings as well as school sponsored events were not an option. We didn’t get to see our alumni and supporters like we normally do, but they continued to support us in every way possible. The fall was busy with our golf outing, Extravaganza and kick-off to our annual fund. We had a record number of golfers Swing Fore the Saints and sponsor holes at the Berkshire Country Club. Extravaganza, despite having to move to a fully virtual event, was well received and enabled us to introduce some new ways of doing things and to raise a lot of money! Alumni and other supporters Gave like Saints on November 1, and our annual fund continued to grow in both dollar amount and number of donors. During the winter and spring months, our supporters watched basketball games and other sporting events, Christmas Vespers and our first Broadway Music Review virtually through our YouTube channel. We were disappointed not to be able to hold Career Day, one of our favorite days of the year, but in its absence, many alumni graciously gave of their time, meeting virtually with interested students to discuss their careers. Alumni also sent our students virtual messages throughout the year to keep them moving forward, and, as graduation approached, sent cards and notes to congratulate our seniors.

We may not have been able to see you, our supporters, at games, musicals, reunions and other events, but we felt your support more than ever, and we are incredibly grateful for it. As we move into 2021/2022 and are able to have reunions and other school functions and to cheer on our sports teams live and in person, we thank you for your continued support and ask for your continued prayers. Thank you again for all that you do. May God bless you and your families and our extended Saints family! Sincerely,

Book of Saints In Memory of all alumni who passed away between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021

electronics, then spent over two decades in the auto world pursuing his passion for technology and cars, and now has a successful tech company in Los Angeles. Our grandchildren are also finding their way in the world. Allegra and Gabi live and work in NYC. Michael and Gia attend Penn State, and Bella attends the University of Georgia. Q: Why is it important to you to give back to Berks Catholic? We have always given back to Catholic education because I firmly believe in the ideals and structure, stemming back from my enrollment in Catholic school as a child. Q: What advice would you give to current students at Berks Catholic?

Elaine Rado pictured with her 5 children (from left to right): Joselle Rado (HN 1988), Stephanie Rado Taormina (HN 1983), Lisa Rado (HN 1984), Christian Rado, and Susan Rado Duddy (HN 1986)

Q: What is your connection to BC/HN? Tell us about your family.

My advice to Berks Catholic students today is that these are the best days of your life. Make the most of your time there, enjoy it, be persistent in your goals, and always give back. And of course #havesomefuntoday! Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you like to do in your spare time.

Our family moved to Wyomissing in 1981. Prior to our move to Berks County, my late husband, Joe, was a teacher and a coach at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic H.S. in Shamokin, PA for nine years.

As for me now, I am the CEO of our family business, WORLD electronics, and I am also happy to be the matriarch of the Rado family. My role as a mother and grandmother bring me my greatest joy in life. In the winter months I spend time out on the West Coast with my son We raised five children, Stephanie, Lisa, Susie, Joselle and Christian. I enjoy spending time at our family home in Christian. Our five children had attended Catholic Avalon, NJ. When I’m not attending to the many needs of a elementary school and high school in Shamokin. Upon our business and large extended family, I love to travel; move, they attended Sacred Heart in West Reading, and Florence is my favorite city so far. I also love to cook, read Holy Name High School. Our four daughters graduated from good fiction, and I enjoy tending to my flowerpots and Holy Name from 1983-1988. gardens in the summer months. Q: How do you feel that your children and grandchildren benefited from their Holy Name and Berks Catholic education Do you credit any teachers/peers/classes? We always believed in Catholic education because of the values, morals, discipline and integrity it instills during the formative years, knowing it provides a strong foundation for a successful future. I am proud of each of the children Joe and I raised who have found their calling in life: Stephanie has found much success in the design field and has grown the brand HAVE SOME FUN TODAY, named for her father’s favorite saying, into a successful global brand. Lisa, who has lived on the West coast for the past 24 years, has also found her passion with nutrition and wellness with her company, Rado Nutrition. Susan, who is married to Mike Duddy (HN 1988), has found her role as a mother to be ideal for her nurturing ways. Joselle has followed in her father’s footsteps the most. She has been a devoted employee of the family business since she graduated from Penn State, and this past year she was named President of WORLD Electronics. Christian, the youngest child, has always pursued his passions. He began his career in 16

Extravaganza

Endowment

Class of 2021 Greeters prepare to welcome attendees to the first-ever virtual Extravaganza

E

xtravaganza 2020 was going to be a special and unique event even before a global pandemic caused Berks Catholic High School to turn the semi-formal gala into a virtual event for the first time. Extravaganza 2020 was the 10th Extravaganza since Holy Name and Central Catholic High Schools merged in 2011 to form Berks Catholic. In those ten years, the event had raised over $1.8 million. And we certainly planned to celebrate that milestone and success. The theme, Together We are Stronger, was a reflection on the merger of two great schools that came together and have become better – and stronger – as one. Then, in the midst of a pandemic and forced to take our event online, we realized the deeper meaning of our theme as it was also a mantra for our world, our country, and also our families, parishes, and schools.

n September 28, Berks Catholic held the Tenth Annual Swing Fore the Saints Golf Outing at the Berkshire County Club. The golf outing was hosted by Terrence J. McGlinn, Jr. (HN 1992) and his wife Kristin (Emkey) McGlinn (HN 1991) in memory of Coach Lloyd Wolf. 164 golfers came out to enjoy a day of golf and to support Berks Catholic High School. All proceeds from the golf outing go toward financial aid for Berks Catholic students. Thanks to TJ and Kristin’s generosity as well as the support of many sponsors and golfers, over $34,000 was raised in 2020.
