Medicare’s fall open enrollment is October 15th through December 7th. This is the time people with Medicare may enroll in a drug plan, review their health care and drug coverage, and make changes. The Stanislaus County HICAP is hosting a Medicare Advantage Forum at the Oakdale Senior Center for Medicare recipients to learn about the changes coming for 2016 premiums and benefits offered by the plans in Stanislaus County. They anticipate as many as seven companies will participate at the forum. Join us to learn more.

COLORING BOOKS FOR ADULTS Adult coloring has become very popular, and according to CNN, FOX News, and The Huffington Post, coloring is a great way for adults to be creative, relax and beat stress. So come and try it out. There are coloring books and color pencils available to use at the Senior Center.

LINDA’S LINES Where did the Summer go? We are now fast approaching the Holidays, don’t miss out on the Halloween Luau is going to be a great event with great entertainment. Can’t wait to strap on that hula skirt.

The Senior Center is looking great for being 17 years old. Over the years there have been many items replaced such as tables, chairs, and computers. Maintenance and painting; kitchen and bathroom counters have been replaced; pool tables re-felted, and new decor. The next project is an upgrade to the Hospitality Desk area. When the senior center first opened the area was an area to sit and visit, then we needed to keep up with technology and it became a computer station, and then when I needed more office space we reconfigured my office cubical and turned it into what it is today the Hospitality Desk. With fundraising money, donations from individuals and other fundraising projects, such as selling plants donated by Bonny Bianchi, and upcoming fundraisers. In the near future I hope to have a new Hospitality Desk that will be more efficient for our desk volunteers and our members.

The “File of Life” is a refrigerator-style magnet folder that contains vital patient information for EMS personnel in the event of an emergency. The “File of Life” contains information such as patient’s name, address, date of birth, medical history and other crucial information that will help speed up patient care while the fire and ambulance crew are on the scene.

Senior Commission meets at the Senior Center. Next meeting September 15, 2 pm.

StaRT offers Dial-A-Ride services in Oakdale and Riverbank. Curb to curb service is available Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The Saint Matthias Anglican Church in Oakdale has started a new ministry for Oakdale seniors in need of transportation to the grocery store, local appointments, or errands. The church is also in need of volunteers to provide this service.

HOLIDAY BAZAAR & ART SHOW Saturday, November 7 - 9 am to 3 pm The Senior Center is making some changes regarding their Craft Boutique. This year we are calling it a Holiday Bazaar and will feature not only handmade items but other types of gift items. There will be a raffle and a Art Show featuring our Senior Center Artists. Come and shop for the Holiday Season, admire the art work and enjoy a soup lunch prepared by the Community United Methodist Church Women’s Group. Any club, service group or individual can rent a 10-foot table for $30 plus provision of a raffle item. You do not have to be a senior to rent a table and items do not need to be handmade. SENIOR SERVICES GREEN BAG PROGRAM For Seniors 60+ - Free 10 lbs. of Fruits and Vegetables 3rd Thursday of each month - 11:30 am - At the Senior Center Program Requirements: Must be at least 60 years old, meet gross income requirements $20,147 or less annually or $1,679 or less monthly for one person in the home. Only one bag per household. There will be a 15 minute presentation on eating healthy when you receive your bag. Registration forms for this program are available at the Senior Center. Apple Hill Wednesday, September 30, 2015 $79.00 per person

Alcatraz Island Cruise Wednesday, November 4, 2015 $104.00 per person

Alcatraz and history go hand in hand. Once home to some of America's most notorious criminals, the federal penitentiary that operated here from 1934 to 1963 brought a dark mystique to the Rock. The presence of infamous inmates like Al "Scarface" Capone, and the "Birdman" Robert Stroud helped to establish the island's notoriety. To this day, Alcatraz is best known as one of the world's most legendary prisons. Our visit will include a round trip cruise from the all new Alcatraz Cruise pier and an audio tour once on the island. PURLS OF WISDOM KNITTING GROUP

The Widowed Person Support Group meets at the Oakdale Senior Center the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. WPS meetings for the newly bereaved and for those who feel in need of counseling are at 6:30 pm, with the General Group at 7:00 pm. At these meetings there are many interesting speakers from the community, travel, video evenings, crafts, and great fellowship.

Tuesdays - 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm Gather to knit and chat is what this group enjoys doing.

PAGETURNERS BOOK CLUB First Tuesday of Each Month - 1pm

Come and join us the 1st Saturday of each month for breakfast at 9:00 am and dinner on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at different locations.

The group welcomes any interested persons to join them in meeting and discussing literature. Monthly book selections are made by the group and are not confined to any genre.
