Sights, Sounds and Smell of the Saltmarsh as Fall Approaches Subtle changes in the saltmarsh inform residents that summer is merging into fall. Days are shorter and the early evening is getting cooler. Once vibrantly green, the vast expanses of saltmarsh have begun to turn beautiful golden amber as the grasses begin to seed. Migrating birds are now arriving and seeking refuge in our marsh. The shallow creeks are beginning to cool, which drives the blue crab and other marine life back into deeper waters. At the same time, millions of bug larvae attract a variety of fish up into the ribbon-like waterways. The budding seeds on the cord grass provide food for both year-round and visiting birds, as they fly across the marshlands consuming seeds that eventually fall to the ground and allow for next season’s crop. These seeds are also blown about by the winds and tides, so by early spring, you will see tender shoots of cord grass starting to appear in the mudflats.

Schedule of Fees

If you close your eyes and listen, you can hear the sounds of the autumn saltmarsh, with Fiddler Crabs by the hundreds scurrying across the mudflats, a ‘pop’ from pistol shrimp punctuate the air and the most curious of all - the often heard, but seldom seen - Clapper Rails perform a symphony as they call out to one another.

Kayaking

Breathe deeply and you will sense the unique aroma of the saltmarsh that either endears us to the lowcountry or strikes us as repugnant. It is the smell of life and serves as a reminder that the marsh - the foundation of all life in the lowcountry - is alive and well. By exploring the sights, sounds and smells of the Okatie River by boat or kayak, you will truly observe the abundant wildlife that are attracted to the richness of the saltmarsh.

The cost is $25 per person for adults and $15 for children under 12. Members are encouraged to bring their coolers with refreshments (no glass containers please). Community corner

Dear Members,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting the 2013 Players Amateur Championship. The tournament once again was a great success, despite the fact that the weather was less than ideal. Member volunteers stepped forward to provide housing to over 80 players, caddies and parents who were all very grateful for their hospitality. We also had over 100 Members who did an outstanding job working the tournament and patiently dealt with all of the weather delays. In addition to the housing and tournament volunteers, there were many others who generously contributed financially to help cover our operating expenses by becoming sponsors or by joining the “2-Club.” It would not be possible to host such a world-class event without all of the support that we received from you. Our goal, and that of the Heritage Classic Foundation, is to host the best amateur golf tournament in the country and raise enough money, through individual donations, to cover all of our expenses with the excess funds being distributed to local charities. These operating expenses included the costs associated with providing the players with daily food, beverage and evening entertainment, plus all of the labor expense associated with staffing the Clubhouse and Golf Shop, and the daily maintenance of the golf course and grounds. Therefore the event was at no cost to the Club.

I would also like to recognize Steve Wilmot, Tournament Director of the RBC Heritage Classic Foundation, and his team for their work throughout the year preparing for the event and for doing such a great job of managing the tournament from “inside the ropes” during that week. The Players Amateur dates back to 2000 and over the past 14 years, has accumulated a long list of participants such as Bill Haas, Matt Kuchar, Ricky Fowler and Camilo Villegas who have become stars on the PGA TOUR. The tournament draws national attention during the summer and Berkeley Hall has a unique opportunity to showcase our community to the golfing world. This would not be possible without all of the support we receive from our membership. Thank you once again and we look forward to hosting the event with you in 2014. Sincerely,

Berkeley Hall

Monday, Sept. 9 at 3pm; Ladies Locker Room

Katherine by Anya Seton

This classic romance novel tells the true story of the love affair that changed history—that of Katherine Swynford and John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, the ancestors of most of the British royal family. Set in the vibrant 14th century of Chaucer and the Black Death, the story features knights fighting in battle, serfs struggling in poverty, and the magnificent Plantagenets— Edward III, the Black Prince, and Richard II—who ruled despotically over a court rotten with intrigue. Within this era of danger and romance, John of Gaunt, the king’s son, falls passionately in love with the already married Katherine. Their well-documented affair and love persist through decades of war, adultery, murder, loneliness, and redemption. This epic novel of conflict, cruelty, and untamable love has become a classic since its first publication in 1954. www.Goodreads.com

Charleston Tea Plantation

Member Mingles

Monday, Oct. 7

5-7pm, $20++ per person

The Ladies Book Club has scheduled a field trip to the Charleston Tea Plantation located on historic Wadmalaw Island. The history of the island dates back to mid-June of 1666 when it is believed that Captain Robert Sanford and the crew of the Berkeley Bay landed on the shores of what is now know as Rockville, SC. Today, Wadmalaw is considered to be one of Charleston’s most unspoiled islands. It is approximately 10 miles long and 6 miles wide. Wadmalaw provides the perfect environment for propagating tea with its sandy soils, subtropical climate and average rainfall of 52 inches per year. It possesses idyllic conditions for growing the Camellia Sinensis plant that is used to produce both the black and green teas on the 127 acre grounds of the Charleston Tea Plantation.

All Member Mingles include beverages, beer & wine, appetizer and a liquor charge bar. Reservations with Concierge Services at 843.815.8494.

Christmas Trip to Tour the Biltmore Estate and Gardens

November 13 & 14, $695 per couple On Christmas Eve 1895, the Vanderbilt family opened the Biltmore House for the first time to their friends and family. In subsequent years, the couple welcomed family, friends and the estate’s employees into the Banquet Hall for the annual Christmas party. Each child who lived on the estate at that time received a special gift from the family.

Today, the Biltmore Estate is one of the Southeast’s most beloved and storied holiday travel destinations. Their modern-day Christmas celebration is modeled on that first Christmas, with an elaborately decorated, 35-foot tall Fraser fir dominating the Banquet Hall. Guests will see 68 trees throughout Biltmore House, each intricately designed and decorated by members of Biltmore’s floral team. Miles of fresh garland and wreaths create a yuletide scent throughout the House, with around 1,000 red and white poinsettias in the Winter Garden and other areas. Update from the

Berkeley Hall Handicap Committee The Handicap Committee is initiating a program to help members learn and better understand how to apply the rules of golf. It is not uncommon to find ourselves in situations on the golf course where we don’t know how to proceed appropriately. To help in this area, a series of videos is being developed about rules and their application. They are not “Hollywood” produced, but the information will be clear. The committee is proud to present the first video with this newsletter. It covers how to make a drop when required to do so. Whoever thought dropping the ball was so complicated! To view the video, please click here or visit www.BerkeleyHallClub.com/HC.php. In the future, rules covering situations that require a drop will be covered, like dropping from water hazards, unplayable lies, plus other rules that are commonly experienced at Berkeley Hall. All videos will be available on the Berkeley Hall Club website in the future. The Handicap Committee has been working diligently to make sure that Berkeley Hall Club is in compliance with the USGA Handicap System. Scores posted through July 7th have been checked, and reminders have been sent to members who had tee times but no corresponding scores in the GHIN system. Score posting review will be a permanent activity of the committee. An important part of determining handicaps is making sure that our courses are properly rated and that individual holes have appropriate handicap ratings relative to each other. Plans are being made to reevaluate the hole-by-hole handicap ratings on both courses. Scorecard data is expected to be collected during the fall, winter and spring, with data evaluation and proposed changes, if any, being presented to the Golf and Greens Committee for approval immediately thereafter. Also, coordination with the Carolinas Golf Association is in progress to have our courses rerated this fall, potentially leading to revised course ratings and/or slope ratings.

Research has shown that the best way to strike the driver is to impact the ball from the inside and with an upward/ascending direction (the clubhead must travel away from the ground). This encourages a higher trajectory with less spin, thus leading to more roll once the ball comes back to earth. How can you incorporate these two important keys into your tee shots?

#1

It all starts at address. In order to move your swing plane to facilitate an in-to-out path, drop your back foot and shoulder inside the target line, and basically set up with a slightly closed stance. Tee the ball high and make sure it is not too far back in your stance. You should have a sense that you are behind the ball and are preparing to "hit uphill" as you get set. (picture #1)

In the swing you will need to feel that you are staying behind the ball with your upper body as you aggressively drive the hips and weight over onto the front foot. This is where the "uphill" sense comes from - as the hips drive, the head stays back, and you create the body motion that allows for the clubhead to move up into the hit. If you cannot seem to get the sense or feel for hitting up on the ball, it could well be that you are working your body incorrectly through impact. It is very common for golfers with tight hips or general flexibility problems to overuse the upper body and try to muscle the hit with their arms. This will always result in a downward, spinny hit on the ball. Get with Derek and myself and together we'll create a program to help you get more flexible and start hitting up on those tee balls.

#2

Remember - this can be overdone! We are only looking for the clubhead to be moving 3-5 degrees up, from the inside and 3-5 degrees up so take it easy and go slowly. I have had startling re#3 sults this summer just by getting golfers to execute these two simple keys with the driver. One golfer actually gained over 50 yards! I'm sure we could all benefit from a few extra yards....not to mention 50! (pictures # 2 & 3)

The Mental Game On Display Matt Cuccaro, National Director of Player Development Telos Sport Psychology Coaching

The mental game can be a mystery since it’s safely hidden within the mind of every competitor. Without the opportunity to engage in personal and revealing conversations with those competitors, one might never Matt Cuccaro know what it takes to become a champion from the inside out. Actions reveal part of the story, so spectators at the Players Amateur may have gained some valuable insight into the mental game of the world’s top amateurs.

The three main components of a strong mental game include: 1. Engage in Every Shot: Although golf is known to be a difficult sport from a mental perspective, it can be handled much more successfully by managing attention for spurts of 10-15 seconds at a time. Unlike other sports which demand consistent attention throughout the entire contest, golf can be a far less taxing endeavor by establishing priorities of picking a target or shot shape and keeping that image in mind for a few seconds leading up to execution. 2. Accept the Result: Once the club has impacted the ball, the golfer gives up all control over the result. Players who appreciate and understand the art of acceptance tend to manage themselves and their emotions more effectively than those who brood over lost strokes and missed opportunities. 3. Relax/Recharge Between Action: Effort, energy and attention is a limited resource. It’s not possible to stay completely engaged in any activity for 4+ hours, much less an activity as complicated as golf. Just the same as a smart-phone requires a recharge after consistent use, the human mind and body needs balance as well. Finding this balance over the course of a 72-hole competition can assist in the pressure-packed closing stretch of a competition. Spectators had an opportunity this year to gain some valuable insight into their own mental game by watching how contestants in the Players Amateur were able to managed these 3 key components, as they competed for a spot in the 2014 RBC Heritage. Mr. Cuccaro has nearly a decade of experience working with athletes, coaches, and administrators on the mental aspects of high performance alongside the staff of Telos Sport Psychology Coaching. In addition to his work with student-athletes, his clients include professionals on the PGA Tour, Web. com Tour, LPGA Tour, and Champions Tour players, as well amateur athletes from around the world. If you have any questions about this topic or other areas of the mental game, please feel free to reach out to Matt. Twitter: @MentalCoachMatt E-mail: matt@telos-spc.com

MAINTENANCE

Reconstruction Of The North Course by Danny Malone, Certified Golf Course Superintendent

as aerifying, verticutting and top dressing them to establish smooth putting surfaces.

Hole #18 ~ North Course

The work required to re-construct the North Course greens from Bentgrass to Champion Bermuda began on June 3rd and will be completed on September 22. The first step in the process was to prepare the putting surfaces for reseeding. This meant that all of the greens had to be aerified and verticut, prior to applying the chemical agent that we use to sterilize and kill off all living organisms that still remained in the soil. After two weeks, the greens were ready to be sprigged with Champion Bermudagrass, top dressed with sand and watered continually to provide for the germination of the roots. The Southeastern Region of the U.S. has experienced an unusual weather pattern that consisted of rain and overcast skies for most of the summer. In fact, early into the project, we experienced periods of heavy tropical downpours that caused some minor damage to the newly sprigged greens. It was fortunate that the heavy rains arrived shortly after the greens had been sprigged, so although there was some minor damage, the areas that were washed away had not taken root and we were able to quickly repair the damage. The greens have grown in quickly since they were first sprigged and were long enough to mow for the first time on July 10th. As the greens continue to mature, we have taken advantage of the opportunity to bring the Cutting The Green course back to its original design by performing a considerable amount of renovation work to the bunkers, the approach areas to the greens and in the fairways. For example, all of the fairways were originally sodded with Tifsport Bermudagrass. Over time, some fairways have been contaminated with strains of different grasses such as Paspalum, Zoysia and Common Bermuda. We are correcting these problems while the course is closed by re-sodding as many contaminated areas as possible. We are now at a stage in the project where the greens are being mowed on a daily basis and we area following normal cultural practices such

18

As we continue with our work on the greens, we have also been reshaping all of the greenside bunkers and restoring the contours surrounding Aerifying The Green the greens to improve surface runoff. Bunkers on all courses will lose their original contour over time because of natural elements such as weather, blasting shots from the bunkers and daily maintenance activity. This buildup of sand along the contour of every green- Shaping The Bunkers side bunker not only increases the difficulty of playing the shot, but also makes it more difficult to enter and exit the playing area. This work involves removing approximately 8-16 inches of sand built-up around the side walls. In addition to restoring the contours of the bunkers, we have also lowered the high of the green surround in a surface area approximately 4-6 ft. in width. Repeated maintenance practices such as aerifications, verticutting and top dressing of the greens has caused a Resoding damming effect, which obstructs the natural design for drainage. By removing this build-up of sand and soil, we have restored the original contour to improve drainage and enhance the aesthetics of greens. Once we have removed the damming effect, we’re able to continue shaping the runoff grade down to the catch basin which greatly improves surface drainage. Also seen in the above picture are square sections of contaminated turf grass that was removed in the area below the graded runoff and replaced with Tifsport Bermudagrass. The project remains on schedule, and the course will re-open on Monday, September 23. For safety reasons, we ask our Members not to walk, jog or bicycle on the cart paths of the North Course, since these pathways are often blocked by the heavy equipment being used by our work crews. Thank you for your patience as we work to complete this reconstruction project.

Hunter Stewart Wins the Players Amateur By; Angela McSwain, Marketing Director, Heritage Classic Foundation It wasn’t the finish Hunter Stewart had envisioned, but the Vanderbilt rising junior enjoyed the perks of winning the 14th annual Players Amateur just the same, claiming the title after the final round was cut short because of hard rain Sunday at Berkeley Hall Club. Play was suspended because of rain and flooding at 12:30 p.m., with the leaders having played 5 holes. Earlier, play was suspended for 2 hours with just 4 groups on the course. Heavy rain was forecasted to continue for the rest of the afternoon so Stewart was declared the champion and the results reverted to the 54-hole scores. Stewart led all three rounds of the tournament and had extended his lead over UC Berkeley’s Michael Weaver to two shots by the time play was stopped. Weaver, the 2012 U.S. Amateur runner-up who played in the year’s first 2 PGA Majors, hoped the weather would hold for his chances to overtake Stewart. University of South Florida’s Chase Koepka took home the third place trophy. Hunter’s win at the Players Amateur earns him an exemption into the 2014 RBC Heritage presented by Boeing each April on Hilton Head Island. The trophy he received is in the likeness of Sir William Innis, symbol of the Heritage Classic Foundation.

Did You Know? Since the Players Amateur was first played back in 2000, there have been 612 players who have participated over the past 14 years. Two players have won a Professional Major Tournament, eleven have won on the PGA Tour and one player has won on the Champion’s Tour.

A Message From Steve Wilmot RBC Heritage Tournament Director

We would like express our sincere appreciation for your outstanding support and financial contributions that we received for the 14th Annual Players Amateur. It was a great week and it would not have happened without the planning and work performed by the Members and Staff of Berkeley Hall to make the event so special for the contestants and our sponsors. Adrian and his Staff went out of their way to make everyone feel comfortable. Matt Presnell and the Professional Golf Staff could not have performed better and it was a special treat to see them wearing their plaid pants during the tournament. Danny Malone and his team did a remarkable job in preparing and maintaining the course. Despite the inclement weather that caused rain delays during the tournament, the golf course remained in excellent condition. Finally, a very special thank you to all the Members who volunteered their time to work many hours during the tournament in less than ideal weather conditions. It has always been our goal to host the best amateur golf tournament in the country and at the same time, raise much need funds to cover tournament expenses and donate any excess to local charities. This is a challenge we face every year and rely on your generous financial support from the purchase of sponsors packages and individual contributions. Members who joined the “2 Club” for example, pledged $2 for every 2 that was scored by a player. This effort alone raised a total of $11,880 that was donated to the Bluffton Self Help and Hospice Care of the Lowcountry. The Players Amateur is a wonderful event to bring national attention to the Club and showcase the community, excellent staff and unparalleled golf facilities. By opening your homes to house the players, volunteering your time and providing much needed financial support it was another very successful tournament. We could not have done it without you! Thanks again and we look forward to working with you again during the 2014 Players Amateur.

Did you know that swimming will help promote a better golf swing? By strengthening the shoulder muscles, you add more elasticity and flexibility to your upper body, which is necessary to generate more club head speed. Consider including some time in the pool as a part of your regular exercise program. Swimming – both freestyle and backstrokes done at slow pace with your arms fully extended, is a great way to stretch your latissimus dorsi muscles. Stretching your shoulder muscles will add flexibility to your range of motion. This is essential for making a complete shoulder turn and generating the power necessary to hit your shots long and straight. Pictures #1 & 2 illustrate how the arms should be fully extended during each stroke in order to strengthen your shoulder muscles (Deltoids, Rotator Cuff and Trapezius). The kicking motion in all of the strokes will also build flexibility in your ankles, quadriceps and hip flexors. By adding flexibility to these muscles, it helps you maintain a neutral pelvic position and spin angle. Try these tips in the pool and if you need some help, please ask one of the fitness professionals for assistance.
