Berkeley Hall

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE

Dear Members, Holiday Season planning at Berkeley Hall is underway, and the Clubhouse is filled with all of the hustle and bustle. As in previous years, this season is designed to offer members the opportunity to enjoy all the festivities with family and friends, while creating memorable moments for all. Kicking things off is Thanksgiving Week, which takes place from November 27-29. The week will include a Lowcountry Boat Cruise at the River Park on Wednesday, November 27. This will be followed by a special holiday Member Mingle Bonfire complete with great food, kid’s crafts, and lawn games along with a DJ playing your favorite selections. At the bonfire, you can also pick up a T-shirt for the 5K Turkey Trot which will be held at 8am on Thursday, November 28. Later that day, we will be serving our popular Thanksgiving Day Buffet, the largest holiday dinner that we host each year, with two seatings at 12:30pm and 2:30pm. On Friday, November 29, our Director of Golf Instruction, Andrew Rice, will be conducting a holiday Junior Golf Camp. To register, please contact Andrew at 843.815.8446. Congratulations to the South Team for winning the spirited 9th Annual North/South Challenge played on October 5. Please mark your calendars for upcoming tournaments including: Men’s One Day Member Guest on November 8, The “HAIG” (2-Day Member-Member) on November 15 & 16, and the Club Challenge on December 5-7. The Golf Shop will once again be hosting its Holiday Wine and Cheese Party on December 12 from 5-7pm, marking the beginning of its Annual Holiday Sale which runs from December 12-24. We encourage everyone to stop by and take advantage of some terrific pricing on last minute items for your holiday gift lists. In future issues of The Berkeley Hall Experience, we will be including a new “Golf Achievement Corner” within the Golf section. What we would like to do is celebrate major milestones in your golfing life. It could range from a new course record on the North or South, to breaking 100 for the first time, recording your first Eagle or Birdie, or shooting your age. We all have different goals or milestones that we try to achieve, and we would like to celebrate them with you. I would ask you to email Matt Presnell {mpresnell@berkeleyhallclub. com} any golfing achievements as you record them moving forward to be included in the publication. Our December holiday events will be filled with all the joy and excitement this season has to offer including: A Celebration of Chanukah on Wednesday, December 4, the Christmas Luncheon and CAPA Angel Tree Gift Giving on December 6, Toys for Tots Member Mingle on December 8 and Santa visits Berkeley Hall for brunch on Sunday, December 15. We hope you and your family will be able to join us for these as well as the many additional events planned for this holiday season. Finally, our Annual Meeting will be held at 4pm on Friday, December 13. The membership will elect new members to the Board, and we will include a general review of the Club’s performance and accomplishments this past year. We encourage everyone to keep an eye out for important updates on our website, www.berekelyhallclub.com, along with other timely Club information. On behalf of myself and all the staff, we would like to wish you and your family a safe and joyful holiday season. Kindest Regards,

Women’s Association of Hilton Head Island The Lowcountry’s Largest Women’s Club

Did you know there is a women’s group in the Lowcountry that is fun, has no fundraisers, yet makes a huge impact on our community? The Women’s Association Sue Todd ~ Front Row on Far Left (white jacket); Judith Tyler ~ Front Row in Center of Hilton Head Island (WAHHI) supports projects that benefit the community and facilitate communications among area women. What began 53 years ago with seven women working to beautify the Coligny Beach Circle, has now grown to more than 550 members. With all the success this group has achieved, it’s amazing some women still have no idea this group exists. With hundreds of members you can bet that it’s a diverse group. Sue Todd, the organization’s Secretary, explained, “The interest groups are a way to expand friendships and meet new people. You can learn, re-learn or just go have fun!” Judith Tyler is serving as President. According to Judith, “WAHHI sponsors informational gatherings throughout the year to provide an opportunity for newcomers to learn about the organization, make new friends, and consider membership.” Membership is open to residents of Hilton Head Island and Bluffton. Please contact Sue Todd for further information at suhatodd@aol.com.

The Berkeley Hall Club wins Community Grounds Maintenance Award The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has recognized Berkeley Hall Club with an Honor Award during their society’s 2013 Green Star Awards competition. The award was cited in their golf course category for the exceptional grounds maintenance of community and common areas. The Green Star Awards Program brings national recognition to grounds maintained with a high degree of excellence, complementing other national landscape award programs that recognize outstanding landscape design and construction. The Green Star Award program features the nation’s best landscaped grounds in thirteen different categories that range from golf course communities to cemeteries and amusement parks. Kayne and his crew of fourteen are responsible for maintaining the landscapes and common areas throughout Berkeley Hall, fifteen acres of plantings, over an acre of floral displays, 20 acres of irrigated St. Augustine grass, lagoon banks, community roadsides and parking lots. PGMS is a professional society for grounds management that was established in 1911 for the purpose of continued education and professional advancement. The majority of PGMS members are Institutional Ground Managers employed in a wide range of different business organizations such as colleges and universities, municipalities, park and recreation facilities, apartment complexes, hotels/motels, cemeteries, theme parks, and landscape management companies.

Did I Die?

Managing The Mayhem Of Alzheimer’s by Gail Matthews Gail and Glenn Matthews (Members since 2004) were married for 54 years and after a short battle with Alzheimer’s, Glenn died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on July 17, 2013 in their home in Wilmot, N.H. He was 76 years old, a graduate of Bowdoin College and veteran of the US Army. His career began in sales for Prentice Hall Publishing, before moving on to Addison Wesley as their Scientific Publisher, and later he formed a company named College Marketing Group, Inc (CMGi) – a company that changed the way publishers would market their college books to campuses throughout the US. When he sold the business, CMGi had grown to 3500 clients worldwide and employed hundreds. He left a legacy of hard work, honesty, integrity, morality, manners and generosity. Gail has written a book on their journey entitled, Did I Die? Managing the Mayhem of Alzheimer’s. It is a caregiver’s guide to peace and quality of life and describes how he fought the disease on a daily basis. Orders for the book can be placed with Town and Country Reprographics, 230 North Main Street, Concord, NH 03301. The cost is $19.99 plus shipping with proceeds being donated to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Report from the Architectural Review Board 2013 has been a very busy year for new construction in Berkeley Hall and there is every indication that this pace will continue through 2014. Fourteen homes are presently under construction with eleven additional plans being reviewed by the ARB for final approval. It should be noted that all of this construction is being performed by nine different builders. The total number of homes completed in Berkeley Hall now stands at 272, which equates to a 49.1% build-out of the community. Many Members are uncertain when they are required to contact the ARB for approval before beginning their project. The ARB should be contacted for the approval of any renovation, modification or addition that would affect the exterior of your home, including any changes planned for landscaping and painting. The ARB meets the first and third Tuesday of each month. Complete submittals and applicable submittal fees must be received one week prior to the meeting to be placed on the meeting agenda. Incomplete submittals will not be reviewed. Approval is not required for landscape maintenance such as the replacement of dead or diseased material or adding items to existing plant beds. However, any statuaries and yard decorations such as bird baths, statues, and fountains that are taller than 36”, must be approved before they are placed in the yard. The ARB office is also responsible for approving tree removals and enforcement of the ARB Standards and the Covenants and By Laws. Dead, damaged or diseased trees are required to be removed on improved, as well as, unimproved lots and are the responsibility of the owner. If you are concerned about any trees on your property, please contact the ARB for approval and assistance in scheduling its removal. ARB office is also responsible for lot signs and mailboxes. Please contact the ARB if your mailbox post needs a fresh coat of paint or you need a replacement mailbox or new lettering. Please contact me if I can be of assistance or if you would like a copy of the ARB Standards. I can be reached at 843.815.8443 or wwagner@berkeleyhallclub.com. I look forward to hearing from you!

Behind the Gates of B erkele y H all

Berkeley Hall has recently produced a new community brochure entitled: “Behind the Gates of Berkeley Hall.” The brochure was designed in a digital format for handouts New Flash Drive Presentation to prospective members and realtors to view on their mobile devices such as home computers, tablets and cell phones. The flash drive offers many advantages over printed brochures that typically have been distributed by developers to promote the sale of their home sites. Printed brochures are expensive to produce and become outdated very quickly. Prospects who are considering either the purchase of property or a membership at Berkeley Hall, want accurate information. This format allows us to provide information in real-time. The table of contents highlights everything from geographic proximity to metropolitan services along with an elaborate description of club facilities, social activities and finances. The design includes quick links to related documents & videos and is in a print-ready format. In addition to producing our new community brochure in a cross-platform format, we have also significantly reduced our design and production costs as well as future marketing expenses relating to the need for timely updates. The brochure is now being distributed to prospects and local realtors and can be viewed on the public side of our website: www.BerkeleyHallClub.com. The brochures are also available in a flash drive format complete with a logo’d gift box for handouts. We encourage members interested in participating in our “Friends of Members” Referral Program (see below) to contact Bob Ring at 843.815.8423 if you would like to obtain a flash drive brochure.

“Friends of Members” Referral Program Our Friends of Members Referral Program continues to be a very effective way for us to attract new membership at Berkeley Hall. Our Discovery Package offers them the opportunity to experience membership by playing the golf courses and enjoying all of our facilities during their stay. As a token of our appreciation for your referral, you will receive a gift certificate for two accompanied rounds of golf; and should they join, you will be awarded a $2,000 credit to your annual dues.

Before I Go To Sleep

by S. J. Watson Every day Christine wakes up not knowing where she is. Her memories disappear every time she falls asleep. Her husband, Ben, is a stranger to her, and he’s obligated to explain their life together on a daily basis - all the result of a mysterious accident that made Christine an amnesiac. With the encouragement of her doctor, Christine starts a journal to help jog her memory every day. One morning, she opens it and sees that she’s written three unexpected and terrifying words: “Don’t trust Ben.” Suddenly everything her husband has told her falls under suspicion. At the heart of S. J. Watson’s novel is the petrifying question: How can anyone function when they can’t even trust themselves? Suspenseful from start to finish, the strength of Watson’s writing allows Before I Go to Sleep to transcend the basic premise and present profound questions about memory and identity. ~ Amazon.com Review.

Beautiful Ruins

by Jess Walter “Beautiful Ruins” is a colorful voyage through a village of the Italian Cinque Terre, the vicissitudes of Hollywood and the complicated lives of colorful characters, including the reallife Richard Burton. Jess Walter’s new novel consists of three main stories, plus a first chapter of a novel by an American ex-GI, the beginning of a memoir by a failed Hollywood producer and a play. Each cleverly adds an additional element in bringing all the stories together. It’s thoroughly entertaining and, at times, deliciously satiric. “Beautiful Ruins” is first-rate storytelling. It is a novel filled with delightful humor, wit and scathing sarcasm for Hollywood and its “industry.” Some of it is hilarious, and some touching and genuinely moving. It is profound and frivolous, poignant and zany. It’s a fine piece of writing and great fun to read. ~ Washington Times Review

Christmas Trip to Tour the Biltmore Estate and Gardens November 13 & 14, $695 per couple

On Christmas Eve 1895, the Vanderbilt family opened the Biltmore House for the first time to their friends and family. In subsequent years, the couple welcomed family, friends and the estate’s employees into the Banquet Hall for the annual Christmas party. Each child who lived on the estate at that time received a special gift from the family. Today, the Biltmore Estate is one of the Southeast’s most beloved and storied holiday travel destinations. Their modern-day Christmas celebration is modeled on that first Christmas, with an elaborately decorated, 35-foot tall Fraser fir dominating the Banquet Hall. Guests will see 68 trees throughout Biltmore House, each intricately designed and decorated by members of Biltmore’s floral team. Miles of fresh garland and wreaths create a yuletide scent throughout the House, with around 1,000 red and white poinsettias in the Winter Garden and other areas. G GOLF

From The Handicap Committee The Handicap Committee is continuing the review of handicap stroke allocations for our Berkeley Hall courses. One element of conformance to the USGA Handicap System is to periodically perform this review. Handicap stroke allocations are reflected on scorecards as the ranking, one through eighteen, of each hole on a course. That ranking shows holes on which a player is eligible for a handicap stroke in competition based on their course handicap. There is a separate set of stroke allocations for men and women. Hole rankings are often misinterpreted. Many players believe, incorrectly, that the hole ranked number one is the hardest hole on the course, and conversely, the hole ranked number eighteen is the easiest. Some players believe, also incorrectly, that the longest holes, usually par fives, are the hardest and should have the lowest ranking numbers, while par threes are the easiest and should have the highest ranking numbers. In fact, a handicap stroke on a given hole is meant to be an equalizer for high handicap players and that is the underlying concept that drives stroke allocations. Holes are ranked based on how much help a high handicap player needs when playing against a low handicap player; the lower the rank, the more help needed by high handicap players. In order to determine stroke allocations for our courses, we are following the process outlined in the USGA Handicap System Manual. It requires 400 hole-by-hole scores each from men and women on each of our courses. Control groups are being identified to allow comparison of scores from low handicap players and higher handicap players. Approximately 150 men and women will participate in one or another control group during each handicap period. When handicaps change on the first and fifteenth of each month, the committee will reconfigure control groups. Individual players may move into or out of control groups based on updated handicaps. When control group members arrive to play, golf shop staff will provide a simple form on which to record unadjusted hole-by-hole scores separately from their normal scorecard for that round. Men will play White tees and women will play Burgundy tees. After the round, the form must be returned to any member of the professional or bag drop staff. Successful stroke allocation ranking will depend entirely on proper completion and return of all scoring forms. Care must be taken to ensure recorded scores are legible. Scores recorded for each hole must reflect all strokes taken to hole out without adjustment. If the player picks up prior to holing out, the most likely score the player would have made on the hole must be recorded. If the round is not completed, the scoring form should be returned with unplayed holes left blank. Scoring forms will be used solely for evaluation of stroke allocations. They will not be used to post scores, check on score posting, or for any other handicap related activity. Players’ names will not be used in the evaluation or in any reports. Control group participants will still be responsible for posting their scores in the GHIN system, properly adjusted following Equitable Stroke Control guidelines (except for tournaments or other events run by the golf shop which are posted by golf shop staff). Stroke allocation review activities will continue until the required number of scoring forms has been collected for each control group. The Handicap Committee greatly appreciates everyone’s effort in this important activity. If you have questions or concerns regarding your possible participation, please contact any member of the professional staff.

The Fazio Room

Short Game Swing Tip By Andrew Rice, Director of Instruction

If all golfers were open to the idea of chipping with multiple clubs, they would perform at much higher levels - and who doesn’t want that? I am of the opinion that it is better to learn one basic chipping technique and simply select the correct club for each unique trajectory situation. If you currently use only one or two clubs around the greens, I would encourage you to expand your short game arsenal by getting familiar with a few additional options. They will give you the ability to easily control the trajectory and release of each shot. Once you have decided where to land the ball, it is trajectory that ultimately determines the distance the shot will travel. The key is to land the ball on the green as soon as possible and have it release to the hole as if it were a putt. Keep in mind that you will encounter certain situations where it is not feasible to land the ball on the green and have it finish close to the cup. Keep an open mind and be creative. Select the shot that gives you the highest percentage of getting the ball close. Here are two different setup possibilities for a chip shot. The first is for a higher shot with a lofted club, and the second is for a lower running shot:

For the higher shot, select your most lofted club and open the face. (pictured left) Notice how the ball position is slightly forward and the weight is more centered versus forward. As a result, the handle is actually slightly behind the ball and should remain in that position through the hit. You want to feel as if the club head gets to the ball prior to the handle, thus adding loft to the face and trajectory of the shot. When opting for a low shot, (pictured left) always select a lower lofted iron (7 or 8 iron) as it has the loft you are looking for with the bounce already built into the sole of the club. When a lofted club is selected to play a low shot, the face becomes de-lofted and the bounce is decreased. The leading edge is exposed to the ground and the chances of sticking the club in the ground or blading the shot are greatly increased. Set up with the ball slightly back of center in your stance. Being able to control the trajectory on your chip shots will give you that much needed flexibility to get the ball up and down in a multitude of different situations. And that can only be a good thing.

Pitching Truths

by Andrew Rice, Director of Instruction

Andrew Rice

As many of you may be aware, I have done a tremendous amount of research on pitching the last few years. My research continues and I wanted to share a few important truths regarding this often misunderstood stroke:

• Great pitchers generally take very little divot, flight the ball low and create high spin rates • Lower trajectory shots are substantially easier to gauge than higher ones • When struck correctly lower trajectory shots will have more spin than higher lofted ones • Most golfers perform better when pitching with their second most lofted club (SW vs LW) • There are two controllable ways to stop a golf ball - high spin rate and a steep land angle • Thin shots have more spin than you might think • The quality of the clubface to ball interaction (friction) is very important in generating spin • The quality of the lie plays a big role in determining the clubface to ball interaction • The optimal lie for amazing pitches is a fairly tight, downgrain lie • Any moisture that gets between the face and ball will decrease friction and thus increase launch angle and reduce spin • Sand between the face and the ball will increase friction and thus lower launch angle and increase spin • When practicing it is important to keep a wet towel handy to clean the face after every few shots - don’t use a tee • Older clubs with worn down grooves or without a milled face will never spin the ball as much as a fresh wedge with a milled face (all else being equal) • A fresh (new), milled face is more important than fresh grooves or even square grooves • Premium golf balls flight better and spin more than inexpensive golf balls • The optimal technique is based almost entirely around managing the angle of attack • Controlling what the handle does through impact is vital in managing the angle of attack • A club path that tracks from in to out will most often lead to better strikes, lower trajectory and more spin • Where a golfer seeks to add loft - bounce, and thus the grind/shape of the sole, will play a bigger role • For stock and thus lower flighted shots, the bounce plays less of a role than you might imagine

I have found there to be a multitude of different and somewhat unusual techniques that work well for certain individuals. My objective has been to find a pitching technique that works best for the majority of golfers. I have found a technique that fits the bill - contact me for more!

MAINTENANCE

Better Billy Bunkers

Most golf course architects make a concerted effort to design and construct bunkers that course Superintendents can maintain through routine maintenance procedures. However, despite an architect’s best efforts, some bunkers present ongoing challenges that cannot be easily solved.

For example: • A bunker designed with steep face walls may have been constructed to present a high degree of difficulty or perhaps designed for visual appeal. Such features may provide an added interest to the game; but they are prone to problems resulting from sand sliding down from the face walls and into the bottom of the bunker. If the silt and soil mixed into the sand is not removed before it’s pushed back up the bunkerslope, the sand becomes contaminated in a very short period with undesirable materials. • High winds, golfer traffic, and raking procedures can also cause sand to slide down steep bunker slopes. This displacement of sand leads to inconsistent depth of sand and purity, and results in poor drainage. • When bunkers drain poorly, standing water may remain for more than an hour or two. Once removed, the bunker sand is often excessively wet and firm for extended periods of time, as excess moisture evaporates from the sand profile as the sand slowly dries.

Spreading Gravel

Spraying Polymer on Gravel

Until recently, the common solutions for correcting these types of problems have been to 1) Recontour slopes in or around the bunkers; 2) Repair or add bunker drainage lines and 3) Install and maintaining bunker liners. However, there is now a new drainage system known as the Better Billy Bunker Method that has produced excellent results at some nationally ranked golf Clubs including; Bethpage, Merion Golf Club, Peachtree Golf Club, and Winged Foot Golf Club. Since we are always interested in finding a cost effective way to improve the playability of our bunkers, we will be evaluating this new drainage system in the greenside bunkers of Hole #4 and #17 on the South Course. The “Better Billy Bunkers” method begins with a two inch layer of pea gravel, which is an excellent conduit to get water to the drain lines. The pea gravel is lab tested to insure it is compatible with the course’s bunker sand. The next step is to apply a specialized polymer used for gluing the rock together. With the gravel layer able to be bound together, we eliminate the need for a

by Danny Malone, Certified Golf Course Superintendent

geotextile liner to prevent sand and rock contamination. The gravel layer has been tested to drain over 1500 inches per hour. The last step is to install the sand at a depth of four inches over the pea gravel. The advantage of this system is that the sand can be added or taken away from the standard four inches to produce firmer or softer playing condition. In the future, we will be testing different depths of sand to improve the playability for our members. These two bunkers will be used as tests to gather information for future bunker renovations. The sand used is also different texture and will be examined for playability, drainage and the washouts during heavy rains. Click here to view the installation process.

4th Hole Bunker

French Drainage Surrounding the Front Mall Maintenance crews were busy working in front of the clubhouse last month, installing a French drainage system around the perimeter of the Front Mall. The work was necessary for two reasons: 1) Water was flowing over the curbs and staining the surface of the road and 2) It was necessary to prevent water from draining under the road and cracking the asphalt. What’s a French Drain? A French Drain is a sloped trench filled with round gravel and a pipe that diverts water away from either a building or road. It’s named after a farmer in Concord, Massachusetts by the name of Henry French, who promoted the idea in a book he wrote back in 1859 about farm drainage in the rural areas. Today, French drains are commonly used to provide an easy channel for water to flow through, as it runs into a gravel-filled trench and into a perforated pipe at the bottom of the trench. Water travels freely through the pipe, which empties a safe distance away from the road into a low-lying area of the grounds.

Oyster Roasts are a Winter Ritual in the Lowcountry

Attending a Lowcountry Oyster Roast is a ritual in the winter for any true southerner, - whether you are a native or transplant. Have you ever considered how the oysters get from the marsh to the shuckin’ table? Well coastal Carolinians have been harvesting oysters for thousands of years. Ancient Shell Middens, found along backwater creeks, are evidence of Native Americans’ appetite for the saltmarsh delicacy. Southern planters considered serving oysters – prepared in myriad ways - the only way to impress northern visitors. It’s said that Czar Nicholas insisted on being served Carolina oysters during his reign. This year, the season began in mid-September and runs through April. Local watermen, clad in heavy boots and thick gloves, take their bateaus or skiffs up into the oyster beds between mid and low tide. Using a mallet or oyster rake, large clumps of the gray and craggy filter feeding bivalve are broken off. Back at the dock, the harvest is rinsed, then divided into those to be shucked and those that will end up at your oyster roast. Oysters are only as good as the water in which they grow. It is imperative that we protect and maintain our pristine estuarine environment to ensure the quality of our oysters. We invite you to tour the Okatie River and observe the impressive oyster beds, with Eric Burns, our Master Captain and Certified Naturalist with Marshgrass Adventures. Please remember to bring along your binoculars!
