Report from the Architectural Review Board

by Wendy Wagner, ARB Administrator We are pleased to announce that we have hit a milestone reaching our mid-way point for build out. Expectations are for another busy year, as we have already received plans for an additional 8 new homes for review. That brings our total to twelve homes currently under construction and another fifteen plans under review. Six of those plans in the review stage have been approved and should be starting construction shortly. Currently, there are 278 completed homes in the community, which represent a 50.2% build out. We are currently having an issue with personal trash being placed into the construction dumpsters. Please keep in mind that these dumpsters are meant for construction trash only and the contractors must pay for the weight of the dumpster each time it’s collected. Please refrain from throwing any personal trash into any construction dumpster! If you need information on trash collection services, please contact the ARB or Concierge Services.

ROOM by Emma Donoghue

To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it’s where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it’s not enough...not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, one that relies on her young son’s bravery and a lot of luck. What she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work. Told entirely in the language of the energetic, pragmatic fiveyear-old Jack, ROOM is a celebration of resilience and the limitless bond between parent and child, a brilliantly executed novel about what it means to journey from one world to another. Review by Amazon.com

Monday, June 2 @ 3pm, Ladies Locker Room The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women. Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah’s eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next thirty-five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other’s destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love. As the stories build to a riveting climax, this exquisitely written novel is a triumph of storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved. SPa & FITNESS

Full-Body Exercises

by Derek Lemire, Spa & Fitness Center Manager

In order for your workouts to become more efficient and effective, you should include full-body exercises as a staple in your training. Single muscle group exercises certainly have their place, but a full-body exercise that works multiple muscle groups at one time will give you the following benefits:

More Calories Burned in Less Time - Because so many muscle groups are contracting at one time your body requires a lot more energy expenditure to complete the movement. Performing a circuit of a few of these exercises is a great way to burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time. Elevated Heart-Rate - As previously stated, full-body exercises require an increase in energy expenditure, thus creating an elevated heart rate. This will allow you to get both a strength and cardio benefit from one session. This 2-in-1 workout goes back to your workouts becoming more efficient. Increased Metabolism - When we exercise, our bodies require more energy and our metabolism increases in order to supply it. If our exercises use more energy as discussed above, not only will we burn more calories and become more cardiovascularly fit, but our metabolism will increase even more. Note: Ask our professionals at the fitness center about our metabolic program if you want to get serious about losing weight. Become More Functionally Fit - Functionally fit means that you are fit for the things you do either for fun, work, or everyday life. Most every movement you do in life requires a lot more than just one muscle group. Also, full-body exercises require you to engage your core in order to stabilize the rest of your body. This will allow you to achieve a strong foundation, and a strong foundation is the key to any kind of movement no matter what the activity. So if you want the time you spend in the Fitness Center to be more effective, then consider including some full-body exercises in your daily routine. Our staff professionals are always available to assist you in developing such a program.

NEWS & NOTES Thank you to all the Members and Guests who participated in Berkeley Hall’s Spring Tournament Season. We had a very successful spring season with increased participation and competitive formats for all the tournaments. We were fortunate to escape a few threatening weather forecasts by the good graces of Mother Nature. Hats off to her. Congratulations to all our winners as we look forward to another successful tournament season this fall. If you have any questions about upcoming events please contact the Golf Shop at 843.815.8444, and we would be happy to assist. Thank you again for all of your continued support as we move into the Summer Season.

Summer Reciprocal Program The summer reciprocal program will begin May 27. Final details are being negotiated with neighboring Clubs to assist Members and Guests with the opportunity to travel and experience area Clubs. Some of the area clubs participating along with us are Belfair, Chechessee Creek, Colleton River, Haig Point, Hampton Hall, Long Cove, Oldfield, Old Tabby Links, Secession GC, Wexford, Sea Pines Country Club and May River at Palmetto Bluff. As a Member, you may typically play these courses for a $50+ tax reciprocal fee. Arrangements must be made for you by a member of the professional staff no earlier than 7-days in advance and are subject to availability at each club. Additional arrangements are being made to help with special availability and rates to include morning tee-times in certain circumstances. Guests are welcome to join you and will pay the “accompanied” guest rate plus cart fee at each facility. In the case of Chechessee Creek & Secession GC, additional fees are required. If you have any questions or would like to set up a reciprocal time, please call the Golf Shop at 843.815-8444.

From The Golf & Greens Committee The enjoyment of playing golf is one of the primary benefits of being a member of Berkeley Hall. In order to provide a continued positive golfing experience, the Golf and Greens Committee has begun a focus on improving the Pace of Play for the benefit of all players. The fact is that slow play detracts from the enjoyment of the game for many players. In a recent study conducted by the National Golf Foundation, “slow play-having to wait on the group in front more than a few times” was cited by 91% of those surveyed as something that bothers them most and detracts from their golf experience. There is a responsibility, on all players and administrators, to ensure that golf is played at a good pace and a pace appropriate to the course being played. We at Berkeley Hall have determined that under normal conditions four hours is an appropriate guideline for a foursome to complete 18 holes of golf. As part of the Committee’s ongoing focus on Pace of Play, a series of short educational videos and articles provided by the USGA will be made available. The first video in this series addresses: “BE PREPARED FOR YOUR NEXT SHOT.”

TRUE OR FALSE??? A player approaches his ball on the putting green to lift and clean it, but accidentally drops his putter on the ball and it moves. According to Rule 20-1, the player incures no penalty if he accidentally moves his ball in the process of cleaning it. Is that statement true or false? {See Answer At Bottom Of Page}

You Might Be A Slow Player If...

You don’t even think about yardage or club selection until it is your turn to play. Please find your yardage and make your club selection while the previous player is hitting so you are ready to play when it is your turn. Remember, at Berkeley Hall we play golf in less than 4 hours.

Matt Kuchar Chips It to Win It at the RBC Heritage

Matt Kuchar

Matt Kuchar chipped in for birdie from the front bunker on the 18th green on Sunday at to win the 46th RBC Heritage presented by Boeing. Beginning the final round four shots back, he tore up the Harbour Town Course, making seven birdies in his first ten holes to overtake third round leader Luke Donald. Matt is a graduate of Georgia Tech and played in the 2006 Players Amateur. He joined the PGA Tour in 2007 and has since won 7 PGA Tour events with career earnings totaling $29,537,000.

BIG Weekend For Players Amateur Alumi Not just one but two wins on the PGA Tour on the same weekend! That‘s what happened when Patrick Reed won the World Golf Championship-Cadillac Championship at the Trump National Doral and Chesson Hadley won the Puerto Rico Open for his first PGA Tour win of his career. The PGA Tour’s Puerto Open Patrick Reed was played opposite the WGC event for tour players not exempt into the WGC. Patrick Reed played his college golf at Augusta State University where he was on two NCAA Championship teams and played in The Players Amateur in 2008, 2009 and 2010. This was the third PGA Tour Title in his last 14 starts for the 23 year old in the past six months. One hour later, Chesson Hadley sank his final putt to win the Puerto Rico Open for his first PGA Tour win in only his 13th start on Tour. He did so with birdies on his final 2 holes to score a 5 under 67. This gives Chesson a 2-year exemption on the PGA Tour as well as, an invitation to The Players Championship and Chesson Hadley the Masters. Chesson Played his college golf at Georgia Tech and played in the Players Amateur in 2007, 2008 & 2009. Danny Lee, who placed second to Chesson, also played in The Players Amateur in 2008 & 2010.

Dear Fellow Members, Thank you once again for your support of last year’s Players Amateur. It was truly a great success and now with the 2014 Tournament scheduled to begin on July 10, there is a lot of work being done behind the scenes to prepare for it. We’re hopeful that all of you will be involved in some way. It has always been our goal to host the best amateur golf tournament in the country, while at the same time, raise much needed funds for local charities. This has always been a big challenge and cannot be accomplished without your support. We greatly appreciated the generous donations we have received from benefactors in the past, and hope that this year; even a greater number of Members will choose to participate financially. The ultimate goal would be to raise the bar to 100% of our Members making some form of financial contribution. Several sponsorship packages are being offered with different benefits listed with each package, but please keep in mind that any donation is appreciated whether it is $20 or $20,000. The “2-Club” {as explained in the adjacent column} is just one of the ways you can contribute as a Sponsor. Members who join the “2-Club” receive a shirt and hat for their contribution of $2 for every 2 recorded during the tournament ($60 value). If you are willing to participate, please speak to a member of our professional staff in the Golf Shop. All of the net proceeds from The Players Amateur are donated to local charities, so please help us to achieve our goals. Sincerely,

Duke Delcher

You are invited to join the Players Amateur “2” Club! Help support four outstanding nonprofit organizations:

Bluffton Self Help Hospice of the Lowcountry Boys & Girls Club of Bluffton South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation It’s easy! Simply pledge $2.00 for every 2 made during the Players Amateur tournament at Berkeley Hall Club. Since its inception in 2012 the “2” Club has donated $25,000 to charity. In 2013, there were 138 “2s” made during tournament play which helped the “2” Club donate $10,000 to local charities. Each member upon pledging will receive one special logoed Shirt and Hat designed for “2” Club Supporters only. The cost of the shirt and hat will be deducted from the total amount owed to charity. At the conclusion of the event the total number of 2’s will be calculated and members will be notified. Here’s how it works: If 150 - 2’s are made during 2014 Players Amateur: 150 x $2.00 = $300.00 $300.00 less $60.00 (payment for one shirt and hat) = $240.00 total contribution by the member.

Unless otherwise indicated on your pledge form, all collected proceeds will be split 50/50 between the four charities. If you would like to join or receive more information about the “2” Club, please contact Andy McMillen, Tournament Coordinator at andy@heritageclassicfoundation.com or at 843.671.2448.

Nautica Announced as Title Sponsor of the Players Am The Players Amateur is proud to be celebrating its 15th Anniversary July 7-13, 2014. The Players Amateur formed its partnership with the RBC Heritage in 2004 and was one of the first major amateur golf events of its kind to offer its champion an exemption into a PGA TOUR event. This world-class experience is only possible through the generous contributions and donations received from tournament sponsors and volunteers of Berkeley Hall. We are extremely excited to announce a new major sponsor of the Players Amateur for 2014. We are Steve Wilmot, RBC Heritage Tournament Director, pleased to welcome Nautica as the presenting sponsor of the Players Amateur. This announcement was Cameron Tringale, PGA TOUR Player, Jason Parker, of Nautica made at the RBC Heritage Media Day by Cameron Tringale, PGA Tour player and Nautica Brand Ambassador. In his announcement he stated; “As an alumnus of The Players Amateur, I am excited to see that Nautica, one of my sponsors on the PGA TOUR, is coming on board to support the tournament. The Players Amateur features the best of the best in amateur golf, and has a track record of producing future tour players while offering an unforgettable experience, one that I am grateful to have experienced during my amateur career.”

New At The Learning Center! Long Iron Practice Bunkers Two long iron practice bunkers have been constructed on the north side of the driving range to practice your approach shots from fairway bunkers. These bunkers have been designed as typical fairway bunkers found on our golf courses with proper drainage and four inches of packed sand. They resemble the same sand conditions found in our fairway bunkers, but not the sand conditions you will experience in our new “Better Billy Bunkers.” Fairway bunkers will normally play firmer than the new Better Billy Bunkers that have been constructed adjacent to the greens. These long iron bunkers will be set up daily with bag stands showing the exact distances to each targeted area and rakes to help maintain each hitting area.

Chipping: 1-Method with 3-Different Clubs by Andrew Rice, Director of Instruction

Golfers love to chip with their favorite club. Regardless of what the shot or situation calls for around the green, the majority of golfers are going to use their ‘go to’ club. That is fine if you are a genius around the greens and have the talent and touch to create any shot with that “favorite’ club, but I am sorry to say that there are very few golfers who can hit those shots on call.. There is an easier way. I would suggest a simple philosophy where you use one method and get accustomed to applying that method to one of three clubs around the greens. The clubs are as follows: • 7 or 8 iron: This club produces a shot that flies 1/3 of the total distance in the air and rolls the other 2/3 along the ground like a putt. Use this option if you are close to the edge of the green and there are lots of green between you and the pin. Most of the total distance is covered along the ground. • PW: This club will cause the ball to fly 1/2 the total distance and roll the rest. This is a good club to get comfortable with, because it will be used in most situations around the green. • SW: Here the club causes the ball to fly 2/3 of the distance and to bounce and roll out for only the remaining 1/3 of the shot. This is the go to club if the pin is cut close to the edge of the green and you need the ball to stop quickly. Most of the total distance is covered in the air. Adopt the same basic set up and stance for each shot; feet narrow, ball centered, and the weight favoring the front foot. A good practice drill to get a feel for how the ball reacts once it lands with each club follows: All that is required is a small towel, your three chipping clubs and a few balls. Start by trying to land five 7 & 8 irons on the towel, and paying attention to how they run out. Then hit five pitching wedges and follow that with five sand wedges. Each club should progressively cause the ball to roll less than the previous one, and you will see how important it is to control the roll or release of the shot once it lands on the ground.

The Wedge Project Andrew Rice recently produced a video entitled The Wedge Project, where he shares his findings from years of research on wedges and pitching. Having worked with many top PGA professionals on their techniques and with the help of TrackMan, he has been able to determine the secret that allows great wedge players to be consistently good. Among the many lessons to be learned from this video are: • How to manage your attack angle for consistently clean strikes • The importance of the “face to ball” interaction and the role of equipment • What bounce can and cannot do for you • How to create a 3D flat spot at the bottom of the arc • Slow motion analysis of the best wedge players in the world • Hitting low flighted shots with high spinning pitches • Easy to do drills • Experiencing the control and confidence that may have eluded you for so long To purchase the video, please visit: www. andrewricegolf.com/the-wedge-project/

Community Maintenance

Pattern of Divots on the Practice Tee by Danny Malone, Certified Golf Course Superintendent

The practice tee on any golf course receives a great deal of use, and our Club is certainly no exception. Members of Berkeley Hall enjoy the use of 33-acres of land that’s dedicated for practicing and taking golf lessons from a highly accomplished staff of professionals. The practice and learning facilities that we are privileged to maintain are considered to be among the best in the country and the true golf enthusiast understands their responsibility of helping us maintain the quality of our golf facilities for others to enjoy. One of the most important ways to help maintain the quality of our practice tee is to create a proper divot pattern every time you are practicing or simply warming up before a round. Unfortunately, there are many golfers who are not aware of the importance of forming a divot pattern when they practice, and take new divots with every swing in a very random and arbitrary manner. Danny Malone explained, “not only does the practice tee look unattractive, but it also destroys a large area of turf. Over time, the maintenance work required to fill the divots in with sand, will actually change the contour and texture of a once level playing surface. The practice area becomes more sand based than soil based which change the consistency of the hitting surface so that it no longer resembles the same playing conditions found on our fairways.” Picture #1 illustrates the wrong way to take divots on a practice tee. The player only took 20 divots yet tore up wide area of the tee box. Our staff now has two options to repair the area: 1) fill each divot individually, which takes a great deal of time, or 2) throw a shovel full of divot mix on the area and use a smoother to fill them in quickly. Since the divots are spread out over a larger area than necessary, much more material is used to fill a relatively small number of divots. Picture #2 shows quite a different approach on the practice tee. Taking the same number of swings (20), the divot pattern is taken down a straight line, leaving a much smaller area of turf grass to repair. The player has placed each successive ball directly behind their previous divot. By making a proper swing, the next divot will remove only the small amount of turf that lies directly under the golf ball. This type of divot pattern allows a player to hit a large number of practice balls without causing much damage to the practice tee. If all of our Members and their guests followed this practice, we would not need to move our hitting stations as often as we do. This would allow sufficient time for grass to grow back in other areas and help preserve the quality of our tees. Having explained the importance of a tight divot pattern on the practice tee, we hope to see patterns that start to emerge that resemble the golfing enthusiast. Do you have a pattern?

The end of April marks the time we rotate flower beds from our winter to summer displays. Our goal for the planting of summer annuals has not changed, although variety selections and color combinations are somewhat different. We select plants that are proven to thrive in our warm weather climate, along with bright new colors and different varieties that are poised to complement each other in a strategic fashion. This gives us the best chance of them making it through a six month growing season. Many flower varieties that are common elsewhere, would only survive until our summer temperatures and humidity reach its peak. At that time in the summer, plants begin to lose vigor and many will simply die. A solid plan is necessary to avoid replacing flowers throughout the summer. When factoring in our cultural conditions, disease, deer, color, and maintenance requirements, we are left with a short list of annuals that meet our expectaEnduro tions. During the selection process, we consider new varieties that have just reached the market. Almost every year, at least one significant plant is introduced to the public that proves to become a great addition in the “go to” list for our area. This year we are using a series of Verbenas called ‘Enduro’ that we hope add to the “go to” list. Verbenas are seldom used in this region, but that may change with the Enduro varieties. Enduro is said to withstand high heat and humidity as well as have a tolerance for colder temperatures. Therefore, our flower rotation this spring will include a mix of older varieties and new additions, such as ‘Superflash’ Euphorbia, ‘Surefire’ Begonia, ‘Pink Zazzle’ Gomphrena and many other bright colored varieties.

Migration of Local Wildlife Back to the Salt Marches With the return of sunny skies and warm water temperatures, we will witness more and more wildlife activity in the Okatie River and surrounding Salt Marsh. Migratory birds that wintered here are returning north and the waders are out in full force. You may notice, especially in the evening, that the trees lining the river banks and fresh water lagoons are nearly overflowing with nesting herons and egrets. Hatchlings will begin to appear in the next few weeks and take flight in the early weeks of summer. If you are on the water, the real treat may be watching the dolphins. They are everywhere! The quiet and remote upper reaches of the Okatie River are an ideal playground for them. Members of the Cetacean family, the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin, can reach lengths of between 7 and 12 feet and may live for 30 years. Each dolphin has a distinctly individual color and personality. Locals will recognize resident dolphins by the shape of their dorsal fin and sometimes assign them nicknames such as Hook and Stubby. Mating most often occurs in the spring, and the female will carry that single baby for a full year. Delivery is done tail first in a watery birth place. Dolphin calves will remain with the mother or female group for nearly 2 years, learning how to fish and communicate. Social behaviors are taught to the young during this time as well. Speaking of social behaviors, it is not unusual to get up close and personal with a dolphin as you are enjoying a kayak tour or boat cruise. You will watch them play, feed and frolic just several feet from your boat. Guided 2-hour kayak nature tours are scheduled every Monday from 9-11am and Fridays from 4 to 6pm. These tours are led by Captain Eric Burns, who is a trained interpretive naturalist. Remember to dress in layers and bring along your binoculars. Contact Concierge Services at (843) 815-8494 to schedule your tour.
