Austin Ernst’s 2014 LPGA Season began
in paradise at the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic. This is her second season on the LPGA Tour and the tournament was played at The Ocean Club Golf Course on Paradise Island. It featured a starstudded field of 108 players who were competing to win the first-place check of $195,000 and to etch their Austin Ernst name on the tournament trophy. Austin finished T-33 at -5 with scores of 69-74-74-70 (287), which is a terrific start to the new season. Jessica Korda had been close on several occasions in the past to picking up win #2 of her LPGA career and finally did it by beating Stacy Lewis by a stroke on Sunday. Austin also competed at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open, which was won by Karrie Webb at 12-under par. She was amongst the leaders heading into the weekend before posting a 79 on the final day to finish 5+. Her next tournament will be held on March 20 at the LPGA Founder’s Cup in Phoenix, AZ.
Keeping up with Brinson’s Travels on the European Tour Brinson Paolini participated in the Players Amateur in 2011 and 2012 and was scheduled to play again in 2013, before deciding to accept an invitation to turn professional and begin his career on the European Challenge Tour. The Challenge Tour is Europe’s version of the Web.com Tour in the US. Brinson Paolini
Brinson was raised in Virginia Beach, VA., and graduated from Duke University in 2013 with a 3.73 GPA. He was a 2-time All-American and a CCSIDA Academic All-American during his time at Duke. He is also the recipient of the Byron Nelson Award, presented by Cleveland Golf/Srixon, in cooperation with the Four Seasons Resort and Club Las Colinas, the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and the Golf Coaches Association of America. Candidates for the Nelson Award must be graduating seniors and the selection committee considers equally a nominee’s entire collegiate academic and golf career and his character and integrity while in college. Particular consideration is given to a nominee’s good citizenship, as portrayed by Mr. Byron Nelson over the course of his life and golf career. Brinson joined Berkeley Hall last summer as an Aspiring Professional and has since had an immediate impact on the European Golf Tour. His first professional tournament was on the Challenge Tour in Lucerne, Switzerland where he placed 2nd. From there he went on to win his 3rd tournament The LeVaudruil Tournament in France, and by the end of the season had played in 12 of their Challenge Tour 26 events finishing 29th overall on their money list. This performance qualified him for the third and final stage of the European Q-School where he earned his Tour Card with Fully Exempt Status. Brinson’s European Tour debut was at the Alfred Dunhill Tournament in Malelane, South Africa in December where he finished 24th. His first tournament in 2014 was at the Joburg Open in Johannesburg, South Africa followed by the African Open in Eastern Cape, South Africa and Tshwane Open in Certurion, South Africa. All of these tournaments were televised in the U.S. on the Golf Channel. We’re proud to have Brinson represent Berkeley Hall on Tour and certainly wish him continued success in 2014.

2014 RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing South Carolina’s only PGA TOUR event is taking place April 14-20, 2014 at the Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island. The tournament will celebrate its 46th year since Arnold Palmer won the inaugural tournament back in 1969. Graeme McDowell will defend his title and will be joined by seven other past champions who are early commitments to the 46th annual event at the Harbour Town Golf Links. The other former RBC Heritage champions slated to compete are two-time champions Stewart Cink and Boo Weekley, plus Carl Pettersson, Brandt Snedeker, Jim Furyk, Justin Leonard and Glen Day. McDowell earned his second win on the PGA TOUR at last year’s RBC Heritage. He defeated Webb Simpson at Harbour Town in a sudden death playoff. He also won two events on the European Tour in 2013, running his career total of European wins to eight. The Northern Ireland native made headlines in the United States in 2010 after winning the US Open Championship. Report from the Architectural Review Board By Wendy Wagner, ARB Administrator
New housing construction in Berkeley Hall remains strong and this pace is expected to continue throughout 2014. Fourteen homes are currently under construction and another eleven plans are being reviewed by the ARB. Since the beginning of the year, 2 homes have completed, 2 new homes have begun construction and 4 additional plans were received. This brings the total number of homes completed in Berkeley Hall to 276, which represents a community build out-ratio of 49.8%. As we move into the spring season, many of our members are making plans to spruce up the landscape surrounding their homes. ARB guidelines stipulate that if plants should die, they must be removed and replaced with similar plants. Foundation plants should be an evergreen variety with a minimum of 30-inches. All service yards must also be screened in with evergreen plants. Homeowners should be careful not to prune plants and trees too early, since weather conditions in the Lowcountry are quite unpredictable and new growth is very sensitive to cold temperatures. Often times, the upkeep of your mailbox can get overlooked. The color for your mailbox post is Charleston Green, and can be purchased locally at Sherwin Williams. The club is happy to perform this maintenance for you at a cost of $18. If your mailbox needs to be replaced, it must be purchased only through the ARB. The cost for a new mailbox with lettering is $50. The ARB can be contracted to replace and paint your new mailbox for $68. Please call me at 843.815.8443 if I can be of assistance.

Hilton Head Monthly Magazine Features Weddings at Berkeley Hall According to an article appearing in the February, 2014 Bridal Edition of Hilton Head Monthly Magazine, Berkeley Hall offers “Southern Elegance with a Personal Touch” to brides and their families looking for the perfect venue to host their celebration. The magazine featured (3) spectacular Lowcountry weddings - one of which was the Cullen/Sorgi Wedding that the Club hosted. The bride’s parents who live in Long Cove wanted a private, stunning outdoor setting for their ceremony with facilities to accommodate a large reception. They found that and more at Berkeley Hall. “The gardens, trees and lake created so many beautiful places for the ceremony and the photos”… In conclusion, the bride stated, “Everything turned out better than I could have dreamed.” Members are encouraged to think of Berkeley Hall when considering their next private function. The Berkeley Hall
Charity Fund
Community | Leadership | Caring Since its inception in 2008, the Berkeley Hall Charity Cup has raised nearly $400,000 for local charities. In 2010, Berkeley Hall joined with the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, to maximize our fundraising potential and vision:
To make a difference by addressing the basic human needs of the greater Bluffton community, especially those who are most vulnerable. Beaufort County is one of the fastest growing counties in South Carolina, and nearly 20% of our neighbors live at or below the poverty level and their needs are substantial. The Berkeley Hall Charity Fund seeks to address specific human needs in the greater Bluffton area such as: education, literacy, housing and homelessness, the ill and infirmed and abuse prevention. The pie chart to the right depicts how our fundraising dollars have been distributed to local charities that meet our specific criteria. The Berkeley Hall Charity Cup, held every two years, has become our signature fundraising event to address the growing needs of our community. The 2014 Berkeley Hall Charity Cup will be held during Memorial Day weekend, and will begin with an Opening Cocktail Party on Friday, May 23rd, along with a silent auction viewing. The Charity Cup Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, May 24th and culminates on Saturday evening, May 24th, with the Gala, Silent and Live Auction events and raffle. The attached flyer outlines our sponsorship levels and pricing for golf and gala events.

Tom Sherbourne is a lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, a tiny island a half day’s boat journey from the coast of Western Australia. When a baby washes up in a rowboat, he and his young wife Isabel decide to raise the child as their own. The baby seems like a gift from God, and the couple’s reasoning for keeping her seduces the reader into entering the waters of treacherous morality even as Tom--whose moral code withstood the horrors of World War I--begins to waver. M. L. Stedman’s vivid characters and gorgeous descriptions of the solitude of Janus Rock and of the unpredictable Australian frontier create a perfect backdrop for the tale of longing, loss, and the overwhelming love for a child that is The Light Between Oceans.

Below Stairs is the remarkable true story of an indomitable woman who, though she served in the great houses of England, never stopped aiming high. Powell first arrived at the servants’ entrance of one of those great houses in the 1920s. As a kitchen maid – the lowest of the low – she entered an entirely new world; one of stoves to be blacked, vegetables to be scrubbed, mistresses to be appeased, and bootlaces to be ironed. Work started at 5.30am and went on until after dark. It was a far cry from her childhood on the beaches of Hove, where money and food were scarce, but warmth and laughter never were. Margaret’s tales of her time in service are told with wit, warmth, and a sharp eye for the prejudices of her situation. Margaret Powell’s true story of a life spent in service is a fascinating “downstairs” portrait of the glittering, long-gone worlds behind the closed doors of Downtown Abbey and 165 Eaton Place.

Allen Kupfer’s Story of Hope and Tolerance Sixty (60) Members and guests attended the February Breakfast Club meeting to hear Allen Kupfer speak about his survival during the German occupation of Poland from 1939-1945. At the age of 87, he is now one of the last witnesses to history, and committed to bring a message of hope and tolerance to local schools, church groups and area Clubs and Social Organizations. A resident of Allen Kupfer Sun City, he also serves on the Board of Directors of Bluffton Self Help. His story was a very personal one and captured the emotions of everyone in attendance. A special thank you to Ric Frame and Tim Wiebe for making the necessary arrangements for his appearance.

G GOLF
The Golf Corner NEWS & NOTES The Spring Season marks the return of the PGA Tour and Professional Golf to our area. The Masters will be played at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia from April 7-13. The RBC Heritage has returned to their traditional spot in the PGA Tour Calendar the following week of April 17-20. The Heritage is played locally at the Harbour Town Golf Links in Harbour Town Golf Links Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head Island. Listed to the right is the 2014 schedule of golf events and we look forward to your continued support of the Berkeley Hall Tournament Program. Registration forms are available on the Berkeley Hall club website and Foretees registration has also been enabled for your convenience. Please contact a member of the Professional Staff if you have any questions regarding an upcoming event or if you need any assistance in processing your registration.
Handicap Corner During 2013, the Handicap Committee reviewed score posting to help ensure individual handicaps reflect a player’s complete scoring record. Player names on tee sheets were matched to scores posted in the GHIN system using a Microsoft Excel based spreadsheet that became a very time consuming process. Once completed, an email was sent as a reminder to players where there was a discrepancy found in the absence of posted scores. On the positive side, there has been an increase in member awareness, and score posting exceptions continued to decline throughout the year. On the negative side, the match process was run at sixty to ninety day intervals making follow up on exceptions and errors difficult to administer. We received mostly positive and supportive feedback of the program from players throughout the year and every response was reviewed to assist us in correcting any shortcomings that were found. As a result, we are making changes this year to streamline the process and improve the quality of results. Matching tee times to scores posted in GHIN will now be done by software included in the Foretees Tee Time Reservation System on a daily basis. It will only require the golf staff a few minutes to run the match, and score posting email reminders will be produced and sent automatically by this software. Players will then have three days to post their scores. The daily match of scores being posted followed by a reminder email sent to the player will now be much easier to administer and will be performed in a timely manner. In order to avoid receiving unnecessary reminder emails, the following exceptions to posting scores should be followed; 1) Those who plan to play nine holes should note that when they make their tee time and 2) Players should notify the golf shop whenever they play an unpostable round because they are on the tee sheet but don’t play, they don’t complete the required number of holes to post a score, or play only nine holes when signed up for eighteen holes. The Handicap Committee feels that these changes will lead to overall improvement in handicap results. As always, if you have questions or wish to provide the committee with your feedback, please contact us at handicapcommittee@berkeleyhallclub.com.

How to Lower Your Handicap - Scoring
What Can You Learn From Your Driver? By Andrew Rice, Director of Instruction
One of the first things I do whenever I begin to instruct golfers for the first time, is to inspect their clubs and look for certain tendencies to discuss when having our first chat. For example, I have seen so many drivers that look like the ones pictured below, that I want discuss just what your driver is trying to tell you! The first place to look for answers is to check the face. Notice how the black paint is being worn off the bottom of the face and there are numerous impact marks on the upper portion of the face from sand getting caught between the ball and the face. Secondly, inspect where the crown of the club meets the face. Here, the wear pattern indicates numerous pop-ups. A few balls must have almost been missed completely to get them that far up onto the crown. Keep in mind that the only way to hit a pop-up is to have a descending blow where the top edge descends below the equator of the ball. Finally, take a look at the sole of the club. Finally, it is apparent here that the club is making contact with the ground on almost every shot. The attack angle is very much down – to such a degree, that both the paint and lettering are being buffed off the sole of this club. The golfer who owns this club hits down on the ball with a very steep attack angle. Keep in mind that optimally, we like to hit up on the ball with the driver for maximum efficiency and distance. Clearly, I have selected an extreme example to illustrate my point, but take a minute and inspect these three key areas on your driver. I believe you will learn a fair amount about your angle of attack and why your golf ball is doing what it does. Keep in mind that the only time a driver should ever contact the ground is when you are addressing the ball. It should never contact the ground after the first foot or two of the swing. The only marks on it should be tee marks running along the sole and perhaps a ball mark or two in the center of the face! If your driver happens to have a similar look you need to contact me at (843) 247-4688 at your earliest convenience! Click on to www.andrewricegolf.com to visit Andrew’s website for additional information and tips on the golf.

Touring South Africa with Members and Friends
Andrew Rice, Director of Instruction at the Practice Learning Center escorted Members and their friends (8-couples) on a 10 day trip to South Africa – a trip that became an experience of a lifetime. For several couples, this was actually their second and third trip to South Africa with Andrew! The group first arrived at the Makanyane Safari Lodge and spent five days and nights enjoying their incredible hospitality, food and game sightings. There they saw animals in the wild that included Elephants, Rhino, Cape Buffalo, Lions, Leopards, African Wild Dogs and even had an amazing Cheetah sighting as four brothers went on a hunt for Zebra and Wildebeest. As a special treat, they were able to touch and hold a massive lioness at a Lion Conservation in the reserve. From there, the group flew to Cape Town and the wine country for some sightseeing and golf. They spent three nights at the world class Cape Grace hotel, played three rounds of golf and were treated to a spectacular dinner at the home of Anthony Hamilton Russell - South Africa’s top producer of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their trip ended in the quaint wine village of Franschoek. The feedback was that they had an absolute blast, and Andrew has expressed his sincere gratitude to Rich and Terri Forde, Jeff and Julie Grimes and Rick and Terri Savoury for making this adventure so special. For more information regarding their trip to South Africa in January 4-17, 2015, please call Andrew at 843.247.4688 or visit their website at syncexcursions.com. MAINTENANCE
Managing Through a Very Frigid Winter by Danny Malone, Certified Golf Course Superintendent
The words “January” and “cold” are now synonymous to residents who experienced the coldest arctic outbreak of weather to blanket the Lowcountry since the early 1990’s. Temperatures in the Hilton Head dipped into the low teens for an entire week, before rebounding back to the 60’s. We were introduced the term Polar Vortex, as residents here and elsewhere across the southern states braved record setting low temperatures With these unusually low temperatures in January, the greens on both golf courses needed some extra protection from the bitter cold. We experienced one week in particular when temperatures held at 32 degrees or below for a period of 48 hour, which required our crews to take the extraordinary step of coating the putting surfaces with ice to protect the greens. This was a lesson learned from The Introduction to Basic Turfgrass101! Icing the greens was one method used by our maintenance crew to insulate the plant and root systems to prevent freezing. This procedure is similar to what Citrus Farmers do in Florida to protect their crops from Iced Green on #9 North Course frigid winter cold snaps. We know that healthy Bermudagrass will die when temperatures remain at or below 32 degrees for a period of 72 consecutive hours. As it turned out, the cold snap did not last quite that long, however protective actions were necessary to avoid potential damage from occurring on the greens. This is especially true on the Champion Bermudagrass greens on the North Course since they are less than a year old.
Green Cover on Hole #9 South Course
16
There were additional steps taken that week to protect the greens. One was to use green covers designed to filter light. Both of the covers that we had in storage were used. The most costly method was to cover the greens with pine straw. This is a very expense option however; we did choose to cover our nursery sod with pine straw.
We knew that the nursery sod would supply us with turf needed to repair or replace any winter kill that might occur. During that 48-hour period, as temperatures remained at or below freezing, we were constantly monitoring soil Nursery Sod covered with pine straw and air temperatures. The best insulator for the Bermudagrass turned out to be the pine straw, followed closely by icing the greens and lastly using the green covers. The pine straw held the root zone temperatures at 20-22 degrees warmer than above ground temperatures, compared to 10-12 degrees warmer on greens that were iced. The green covers kept the root zone temperatures 8-10 degrees higher than air temperatures above ground. All of these methods were successful in protecting the root zones from freezing. Today, our greens are as healthy as they can be as we move into the spring.
Winter Weather and Your Landscape By Kayne Hoecht, Community Maintenance Supervisor The harsh weather we’ve experienced this winter has some homeowners concerned about how it may have affected their landscape. It’s hopeful, though unlikely that the insect populations may have taken a hit. Since most insects can whether the cold, it’s likely they are ready to return in the spring. Our best hope is that this past winter may have pushed some migratory insects further south and thus delay their return. As some insects may have been pushed further south, some may have simply hibernated into homes. Tree dwelling insects, such as palmetto bugs and wasps, may have actually crawled into homes for safe refuge. Therefore, keeping landscape plant materials away from our homes may prevent these bugs from using shrubbery as a ladder to enter homes during cold spells. Fortunately, the timing for freezing weather to arrive was as good as it could be. Plants had enough time to go dormant and store their energy for the arrival of spring. A few select common plants may have been damaged cosmetically. For example, brown leaves seen on Bottlebrush and Oleander my be unsightly but should not cause any lasting damage. Before getting out and cutting shrubs back for springtime, waiting until the threat of a frost is over is always your safest bet.

Salt Marshes - One of the Most Productive Contributors to our Ecosystem The salt marsh habitat is characterized by salt tolerant trees, sea grasses and other plants that have adapted to the continual effect of the ebb and flow of tides. Salt marshes exist where ocean water flows between the mainland and outer sea or barrier islands. South Carolina has more salt marsh than any other state in the nation, and Beaufort County has the greatest share of salt marsh areas in the state. Tides are the heartbeat of a salt marsh. The salt marsh and tidal creeks flood and drain twice daily as the tides rise and fall. The flow is influenced by the moon and the difference between high and low tide will change on a daily basis. When the moon is full, or new, we see a height differential of ten or more feet. Commonly called a Spring Tide, it has nothing to do with the season. As the moon moves through its cycle and we see a half moon in the sky, the difference between high and low averages about 5 feet. This is called a neap tide. The salt marsh is one of the most productive ecosystems in nature. The incoming tide brings nutrient enriched water over the marsh to nourish a multitude of animals, large and small. In return, an enormous amount of decaying vegetation and decomposing animals (mostly microscopic) are flushed out to sea. Because of the abundance of food, the salt marsh is an important nursery habitat for a variety of fish and crustaceans, a feeding and nesting site for waterfowl and shorebirds, and a habitat for many unique plants and animals. Guided 2 hour Kayak Nature Tours are scheduled every Monday from 9-11am and on Fridays from 3 to 5pm. Each tour is led Captain Eric Burns who is a trained interpretive naturalist. The Art of Running By Bryan Coker, Certified Personal Trainer
Running is a popular recreational pasttime, but as the activity continues to increase in popularity, there has been a similar increase in the number of personal injuries being reported. The most common injuries that we have seen affect the hips, knees, ankles and feet. Achilles Tendonitis is a chronic injury that occurs primarily from overuse and is felt as pain in back of the ankle. If left untreated, it may increase your risk of Achilles Tendon Rupture. Overtraining Syndrome frequently affects athletes who are training for competition or a specific event and train beyond the body’s ability to recover. Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome refers to pain under and around the knee cap and is commonly referred to as “Runner’s Knee.” Piriformis Syndrome is when the piriformis muscle becomes cramped and puts pressure on the sciatic nerve and causes pain in the buttock or sciatica.

Sue Weber
If you wake up a little too late, you may just miss her. While many are still nestled in their beds, Sue Weber quietly sneaks in and out of the Fitness Center before the sun comes up to hop on the Concept 2 Rowing Machine. Off she goes rowing across the Atlantic and around the world. Each time she works out, she logs her distance in a free online logbook provided by the Concept2 website. This website provides a way for one to track distance, compete in virtual challenges and find motivation to keep getting on that rower. Sue has completed 2 very impressive challenges that require a great deal of perseverance. The December Holiday Challenge for example, required her to row 100,000 meters between Thanksgiving and Christmas. With only 28 days between the two holidays, that is an average of 3,571 meters a day! She has since enrolled in the 1,000,000 Meter Club for having rowed over one million meters and still counting. We congratulate her for achieving such a milestone and encourage her to keep on rowing!
