Report from the Architectural Review Board By Wendy Wagner, ARB Administrator The ARB expects new residential construction to continue strong through 2013. Presently, 14 homes are under construction with another 8 plans being reviewed by the ARB for final approval. There are a total of 261 homes completed which equates to a build-out of 47.1%. Though spring weather is just around the corner, we still may experience some cold days before it finally arrives. In case of a water leak, a good thing to be aware of is the location of the main valve that shuts-off water to your home. Most valves are located between the house and the street and most often they are concealed under mulch or straw. When a leak or a busted pipe occurs, the water shut-off is not something that you want to have to hunt for, so take a few minutes and make sure that you know where it is. If you have any questions, please contact me at 843.815.8443 or email me at wwagner@berkeleyhallclub.com. I’ll be happy to investigate the matter and assist you in resolving any questions you may have regarding your property.

Hannah’s Dream by Diane Hammond

Monday, March 4 @ 3pm, Ladies Locker Room “Hannah’s Dream” is a well-crafted, heartfelt story of a 41-year love affair--between an elephant named Hannah and her long-time keeper, Samson “Sam” Brown. The tale is set at the fictional Max L. Biedelman Zoo in Washington State. The zoo was bequeathed to the local city after her death, and its glory days are clearly behind it. Hannah isn’t faring much better, despite Sam’s loving attention, which includes regular treats from Dunkin’ Donuts. Sam’s health is poor and he clearly needs to retire, but won’t give up his “sugar” until he knows she’s going to be wellcared for. When you finish Diane Hammond’s novel, you’ll have a lump in your throat and joy in your heart. ~ Amazon.com

“Spontaneity has never been Harold Fry’s strong suit, especially once he retired. Just ask his long-suffering wife, Maureen. So imagine her surprise when Harold abruptly decides to walk 500 miles to the north of England in a naive attempt to save a dying woman, a colleague he once knew briefly but to whom he hadn’t spoken in 20 years. It’s the proverbial case of a man going out to mail a letter and never coming home. Clad only in his everyday garb, lacking a cell phone, backpack, or reliable sense of direction, Fry puts one poorly shod foot in front of the other and trudges through villages and hamlets, often relying on the kindness of strangers to keep his momentum going. To the object of his inspiration, the fading Queenie Hennessy, he writes pithy postcards, bravely exhorting her not to die. Solitary walks are perfect for imagining how one might set the world to rights, and Harold does just that, although not always with uplifting results, as he ruminates on missed opportunities and failed relationships.” ~ Carol Haggas, Booklist For further information concerning the Ladies Book Club, please contact Wendy Hansen at hansenwendyj@gmail.com.

The Handicap Corner In 2012 the Handicap Committee used the Handicap Corner to educate members about the role of the committee, the handicap process, and Club and individual responsibilities to that process. For those interested in learning more about handicaps, go to www.usga.org and click on Handicapping. As we begin 2013, the Handicap Committee will shift primary focus from education to acting on its obligation to review handicap trends and individual handicaps, an important function outlined by the USGA. Handicaps are intended to “level the playing field” for all players, and the goal is to ensure that everyone has a fair and equitable chance to compete in organized tournaments as well as their everyday games. At Berkeley Hall, this is considered essential to encouraging greater participation in our golf events.

Accurate and timely score posting is the foundation of handicap determination. Our new GHIN system and its link to Foretees, coupled with analytic capabilities of spreadsheets, provide tools to compare individual member scoring records with daily tee time records to insure that scores posted are valid and represent games actually played. Also, these tools can be used to compare individual tournament performance to non-tournament performance, leading to handicap adjustments when necessary. In that spirit, members are requested to become familiar with the GHIN computer in the pro shop, learn Equitable Stoke Control rules for score adjustments, and post all scores conforming to the definition of valid scores as soon as possible after those rounds are played. The Berkeley Hall Professional Staff is always available to answer questions in these areas. The Handicap Committee will continue to foster understanding of the handicap process and communicate results of ongoing handicap analysis.

Cameron Smith, a Member of the Australia National Golf Team and participant in the 2012 Players AmaCameron Smith teur recently won the 2013 Australian Men’s Amateur Championship. He defeated Victorian Geoff Drakeford, also a Member of the Australia National Team who competed in the 2011 and 2012 Players Amateur. This tournament was held at The Commonwealth Golf Club in South Oakley Victoria. The Australian Men’s Amateur Championship is open to players of all ages with an initial field size of 216. It begins as a 36-holes stroke play qualifier with the top 64 players progressing to elimination match play. Its history dates back to 1894 when the Royal Melbourne Golf Club began holding an annual event known as the Victorian Golf Cup and since has become known as the amateur championship of Australia. After the formation of the Australian Golf Union in 1898, the Amateur Championship of Australia event was held under its auspices and winners of the Victorian Golf Cup were officially recognized to be Australian amateur champion. At one point Smith was 5 down in the final, but he fought back to win his first Australian Amateur title with a 3&2 victory. His victory earns an exemption into the 2013 Emirates Australian Open. In an interview published by AmateurGolf.com, Cameron was quoted as saying; “I’m gob smacked! I can’t even believe I came back from that. I played some good shots and put him under pressure and holed some putts. I thought if I could extend the match to the last hole, but turns out I got it done before that which was quite nice. Mum was pretty stoked when I told her; she was just yelling and couldn’t get a word out.”

Hole #17 ~ Sorth Course

Since Ben Curtis won the inaugural event back in 2000, the Players Amateur is recognized as a Major tournament for amateurs. Last year, the tournament attracted another world-class field of amateurs including players from the United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Dubai.

How to Stop Scooping

by Andrew Rice, Director of Instruction This is a version of a drill that I have presented many times, but each time I use it, it impresses upon me the importance of a proper strike on the golf ball. While using TrackMan, I have come to learn that the correct attack angle (an upward or downward hit) with an iron should be anywhere between 2 and 5 degrees down. If you have ever topped shots or alternated between thin and heavy strikes, you are more than likely getting scoopy through impact and this drill is right up your alley. This drill will get you to do the following through impact: • Get the weight shifted onto the front foot • Lead the hands ahead of the clubhead • Hit down on the ball • Take divots in the right place - after the ball!

All you need is a small piece of one of those swim noodles that all the kids like to use in the pool. Secure the strip of noodle into the ground by pressing tees through the center. It may take a little experimenting, but eventually you’ll find the appropriate distance to line the balls up from the noodle. Before long you should start to see a consistent line of divots occurring on the target side of the golf ball - a positive sign! If you find yourself hitting a few of the dreaded “hosel rockets” your grip is too weak; Essentially you now need to scoop the face in order to square the clubface through impact. Get it stronger! If you need help with impact or any other part of your game please stop by to see me at the Learning Center. I can be reached at 843.247.4688 or please visit www.andrewricegolf.com for additional information.

Individuals start out the New Year with the best intentions. The first day of January seems to be an ideal opportunity to turn the page and set out to meet your new goals. Unfortunately, many individuals find themselves defeated within two weeks of taking on their newest challenge. A deeper look at the research on motivation shows us why:

• By nature, we are not great at delaying satisfaction. We enjoy the feeling of accomplishment, however, when that accomplishment (i.e. losing 20 pounds) will not be realized for months in advance, we are left feeling defeated much of the time. •

People are often told to create short term goals like simply focusing on losing the first five of the entire 20 pounds and then building from there. This sounds more attainable, however there are still many pitfalls to overcome before losing even five pounds.

The best answer seems to come from the fact that emotions are our number one motivator. Think about the last great motivational speech you heard. Chances are you were moved to act following that emotional tug from some powerful and inspirational words. The downside of motivational speeches is the short time those words last. The positive emotion which leads to instant action does not hang around too long, leaving the individual feeling only slightly better from an emotional perspective. In order to maximize the emotional lift and assist it to endure even longer, reflect upon the emotional impact felt immediately after the action. After a great workout, many individuals feel extremely tired and sweaty. They might also notice the positive emotion of accomplishment for making the effort required to achieve that tired and sweaty sensation. This plays directly into our need for feeling accomplished and gratified. Once an individual becomes aware of feeling positive emotions after a workout, they feel the need to work out again in the future to continue receiving those benefits time and time again. Now an effective habit is beginning to form.

March 13 -16; Learning Center

The game of golf does not often create the same noticeable feeling of sweat or physical exhaustion afterwards. Therefore players should look internally, to the mental capacity required to practice and play at a high level. There is no doubt that golf requires significant focus and attention to achieve success. Instead of noticing the physical rewards gained from a workout, start paying attention to mental effort made to gain the same motivational boost following golf activities. If the golfer felt mentally engaged throughout much of the time spent on the course or practice area, the same effort-based reflection will provide an emotional boost. The satisfaction and positive emotion gained will assist the individual in feeling fulfilled and inspired to act with purpose once again. As the New Year moves on and motivation begins to fade in many of those around you, continue to reflect upon the effort you are making during and following your daily resolutions to let them stick for good.

If you ever wanted to know what it’s like to be a Tour player and have access to the same equipment they do then this is your chance. Each fitting will be 2-hours and the cost is $150. Please inquire in the Golf Shop as space is limited. For further information, visit www.moderngolf.ca.

Matt Cuccaro has nearly a decade of experience working with athletes, coaches, and administrators on the mental aspects of high performance. In addition to his work with student-athletes, his clients include professionals on the PGA Tour, Web.com Tour, LPGA Tour, and Champions Tour players, as well amateur athletes from around the world. If you have any questions on how to apply this motivational approach to your life both on and off the course, contact Matt on Twitter: @MentalCoachMatt or e-mail matt@telos-spc.com.

The Staff of the Heritage Classic Foundation is very excited to work once again with everyone at Berkeley Hall. We’ve already had several meetings with your staff to discuss this year’s tournament and couldn’t be more pleased with our special partnership. The Players Amateur is celebrating its 14th year this July 8th -14th. Over the years, the event has grown to be one of the best amateur events in the country. We boast a very impressive list of past champions and participants and hope many of you will choose to be a part of this great event. We need sponsors to play in the Contestant Amateur Tournament and volunteers as well as housing sponsors. The young men that participate each year are incredible golfers and so enjoyable to get to know. Please contact Bob Ring at (843) 815-8423 for more information on how you can get involved. We are also busy preparing for the 45th annual RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing. This year, we are back to our traditional date behind the Masters – April 15th – 21st. We are happy to have Berkeley Hall join us for the 2nd year as an Expo Sponsor. We hope to see you there too! MAINTENANCE

Preparing for the North Couse Greens Conversion by Danny Malone, Certified Golf Course Superintendent

Our preparations to convert the Bentgrass greens on the North Course to Champion Bermudagrass began last year when we installed a practice green at the Learning Center. The purpose of this installation was to evaluate the best techniques to install the Bemuda Grass, as well as the cultural practices required maintain a quality putting surface. Since the Danny Malone time we installed a test green, we have continued to gather information from the USGA and other Clubs with similar experiences to ensure that we have a smooth transition. For example, I recently attended a USGA conference at Cherokee Town & Country Club in Atlanta. The theme of the conference was “What Would You Have Done Different and What About Your Winter Management Techniques.” This TwoDay Conference provided Chris Young, North Course Superintendent and me with an opportunity to consider additional installation and maintenance procedures that will help us to successfully complete the conversion. It was clear from the information gathered from discussions with USGA Officials and other Club Superintendents that different techniques used during the installation phase had a significant affect on the overall quality of the putting surface. For example, once the green has been sprigged, it is very important to spread a sufficient amount of sand on the surface to shorten the grow-in period, smooth out the putting surface and reduce our irrigation requirements. I found the most interesting part of the conference to be the different cultural practices being followed to maintain the Champion Bermudagrass during the winter months. The Superintendents attending the conference arrived from 5 different States including; South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. It was interesting to note how temperature and climate are the factors that determine how these greens must be cared for during the winter months to maintain a quality putting surface. This past month, I had the opportunity to attend the GCSA (Golf Course Superintendents of America) National Education Conference in San Diego, CA. At this conference, we were presented with the technology to control the horizontal growth (grain) of Champion Bermudagrass to maintain a quality putting surface. As you can see, we’ve made a considerable effort to gather information on proven cultural practices for Champion Bermudagrass to prepare ourselves for the conversion that begins on June 3rd.

Spring Plantings by Kayne Hoecht, Community Maintenance Supervisor

Transitioning into the Spring, our winter landscape projects are nearly complete and we are starting to enjoy the longer days and milder spring temperatures. During the winter, we completed projects that are required to care for a maturing landscape, which means pruning trees, edging flower beds and working on drainage problems. Our focus is now on planting new flowers, spreading fertilizer, mulching beds and testing our irrigation systems. Preventative maintenance is always a priority. With healthy plants, we‘ll save an enormous amount of time and money on work that could have otherwise been avoided. We perform two major flower rotations a year. The first planting is done in the spring and will last through October. Our second planting is in preparation for the cooler months ahead. We placed orders for custom spring flowers in January with all of our suppliers, being careful to select those varieties of plants that can tolerate the summer heat. There are many flowers such as Marigolds, Petunias and Zinnias that do excellent in other parts of the country but would not do well in the Lowcountry. If these plants are to be used we need to be prepared to replace them in July. Therefore, to minimize the total loss of a flower bed, they are paired with less vulnerable plants. To complete the design process of the flower order, the combinations are mapped into various areas that will best suit the cultural requirements of the specific varieties. The last step is to ensure that we remain on budget. The means we must consider the purchase price, cost of the installation and replacement cost needed during the season. This year you will notice a contrast of bright colors and textures of plants placed throughout the landscape. Our selection of spring flowers will include ~ Zinnias, Marigolds, Strap Leaf Caladiums, Alternathera, Portulaca and Compact Sunpatients.

Salt Marshes

One of the Most Productive Contributors to our Ecosystem The salt marsh habitat is characterized by salt tolerant trees, sea grasses and other plants that have adapted to the continual effect of the ebb and flow of tides. Salt marshes exist where ocean water flows between the mainland and outer sea or barrier islands. South Carolina has more salt marsh than any other state in the nation, and Beaufort County has the greatest share of salt marsh in the state. The tide is the heartbeat of a salt marsh. The salt marsh and tidal creeks flood and drain twice daily with the rise and fall of the tide. Influenced by the moon, the difference between high and low tide changes on a daily basis. When the moon is full, or new, we see a height differential of 10 or more feet. Commonly called a spring tide, it has nothing to do with the season. As the moon moves through its cycle and we see a half moon in the sky, the difference between high and low averages about 5 feet. This is called a neap tide.

The salt marsh is one of the most productive ecosystems in nature. The incoming tide brings nutrient enriched water over the marsh to nourish a multitude of animals, large and small. In return, an enormous amount of decaying vegetation and decomposing animals (mostly microscopic) are flushed out to sea. Because of the abundance of food, the salt marsh is an important nursery habitat for a variety of fish and crustaceans, a feeding and nesting site for waterfowl and shorebirds, and a habitat for many unique plants and animals.

Schedule

Guided 2 hour nature kayak tours are scheduled every Friday from 3 to 5 pm. Led by a trained interpretive naturalist guide from Outside Hilton Head it is enjoyable and informative. Remember to dress in layers and bring along your binoculars. Contact your concierge to schedule a tour.

Our tidal creeks are loaded with flora and fauna alike in a fragile habitat that is unique to very few areas of the United States. From the Spartina Grass to the dolphins, all organisms in these waters are connected by a single ecological circle and are waiting for you to discover their majestic grandeur. Let him guide you through the many unique water activities that are available at the River Park.
