Dr. Kathy Corley Completes the 38th Marine Corps Marathon

On Sunday, October 27, Dr. Kathy Corley completed the 38th Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C. The Marine Corps Marathon’s starting line was just Kathy Corley outside of Arlington National Cemetery and the 26.2 mile route included Rock Creek Park, past the Lincoln Memorial to East Potomac Park, past the Washington Monument, around the Capital Mall, crossing back to Virginia to Crystal City, and past the Pentagon to the finish line at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Rosslyn, Virginia. There were a total of 31,000 participants who began the race, including wheel chair athletes, half marathoners, and full marathoners, and 23,480 who eventually crossed the finish line. As in the past when she ran in the Savannah Rock and Roll Marathon and the Disney Half Marathon, Dr. Corley ran alongside other members of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in training to raise funds to fight Leukemia and Lymphoma. At this marathon, she raised $3,800 from contributions received from friends and Members of Berkeley Hall. Her participation in these marathon events is done in memory of her friend and colleague, Dr. Randy Wall, whose life was cut short due to complications associated with Leukemia.

Austin Ernst joins Berkeley Hall Austin Ernst, LPGA Tour Player from Seneca, SC has recently joined Berkeley Hall as a Member and will be here working on her game before beginning her 2nd season on the LPGA Tour. Her dad Mark is the General Manager and Head Austin Ernst Golf Professional at Cross Creek Plantation Golf and Country Club in Seneca, S.C. He has been her swing coach since the age of 6. A two-time AJGA All-American with several wins and top-10s, she was South Carolina’s Player of the Year in 2009 and ranked sixth in the nation according to Golfweek Magazine. It was inevitable that such a decorated junior golfer would be recruited by top colleges around the country, but the Lousiana State University Tigers seemed to be the perfect fit. She turned professional shortly after completing her sophomore year at LSU, when she accepted a “Sponsor Invitation” to play in the 2012 Kraft Nabisco Championship where she finished tied for 49th. Ernst felt her game was ready for the LPGA Tour. “I felt there was no reason to hold off on it,” said Ernst. “It was really tough to leave what we as a team had done and leave what I had accomplished there. But looking back on it this year, it was definitely the right decision.” Ernst had a solid start to her rookie campaign with top-30 finishes in her first two events, and finishing sixth at the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic in mid-July. With another solid T9 finish at the Safeway Classic Presented by Coca-Cola,she ranked fifth overall in chase for the Rolex Rookie of the Year. “My rookie year, it has had its ups and downs that’s for sure,” said Ernst. “But overall, I think it’s been a really good learning experience. I’ve kind of taken this year to learn how to travel and learn how to play every week.”

Charity Cup

The Fundraising Steering Committee is requesting your assistance as we prepare for the 2014 Charity Cup, which will be held May 23-24 during Memorial Day weekend. Since 2008, we have experienced tremendous support from our local business community, but, we would like to expand the business community involvement in our 2014 fundraising efforts. We believe that the best way to achieve this goal would be to have each of us take advantage of our personal connections with local commercial enterprises to promote the fund and explain how it serves Bluffton. With your help, the Fundraising Steering Committee will be better able to identify the most appropriate businesses to target. Below is a list of broad business categories that you may use for ideas. Please let us know of any businesses with which you may have a personal or professional relationship. Also, please indicate the nature of your relationship and your willingness to solicit your contact, or if you prefer, to assist a member of the Fundraising Steering Committee with the solicitation. Please contact Tom Schlossberg: Tom.Schloss@gmail.com, Bill Reddersen: WReddersen@aol.com, or Phil Anselmo: PNDAnselmo@Hargray.com for additional information. Thank you in advance for your assistance with our fundraising efforts which will greatly enhance our ability to do more for the Bluffton community.

Special Reception for Sponsors and National Media

attending the 12th Annual Concours d’Elegance The Concours d’Elegance began in 2002 as a small local car show, and has since grown into a multi-day, nationally acclaimed event with over 16,000 spectators and 500 classic automobiles positioned for display. This year’s festival began on October 25 with three days of car racing held on a 2-mile road course at Hutchinson Island in Savannah, Georgia, and culminated with a two day auto show at Port Royal Plantation on Hilton Head Island. The Honorary Chairman was Hurley Haywood, considered the ‘most prolific sports car endurance driver’ of all time, having won more endurance classics than any other driver in racing history. All of the proceeds each year are donated to Driving Young America, Which is a “designated fund” of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry that provides investment and administrative services to over 200 charitable funds established by local individuals and organizations. Berkeley Hall has long been a supporter of the Concours d’Elegance Motoring Festival by hosting Driving Tour Breakfasts and Luncheons for Sponsors and Exhibitors. This year the Club sponsored a cocktail reception on Friday, November for event Sponsors and the National Media who were attending the weekend festivities. As a special tribute to their officials and media, the Members and friends of Berkeley Hall displayed their own classic vehicles on the rear of the clubhouse grounds.

Toys For Tots Donated Gifts

Marsha Levin greets the Marines who arrived to collect the gifts from Berkeley Hall

Toys For Tots Holiday Member Mingle On Sunday evening, December 8, Members were in a festive mood as they enjoyed a Sugar and Spice Tour through five of the most beautifully decorated homes in Berkeley Hall, as part of a special Member Mingle held to collect toys for the needy children in Jasper, Chatham, Effingham and Beaufort Counties. With each stop along the way, they were served holiday hors d’oeuvres and beverages, before gathering at the clubhouse for Christmas desserts and coffee. All of the toys that had generously been donated by our Members, were on display in the Mixed Grille of the Clubhouse, and presented to U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Competent from Savannah, Georgia who were there as Santa’s helpers to deliver them to the children. The Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation assists in providing a tangible sign of hope to economically disadvantaged children at Christmas time. The primary goal of the Foundation is the same as that of the overall Toys for Tots Program – “to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to those less fortunate.” A special thank you to our maintenance manager, Bryan O’Neil, USMC (ret.) who helped coordinate this event with the Marine Corps.

Members had the opportunity to visit one of the Southeast’s most beloved and storied holiday travel destinations when they toured the Biltmore ouse in Asheville, NC. There were 68 trees decorated throughout the estate, each was intricately designed and decorated by members of the Biltmore’s floral team. Miles of fresh garland and wreaths created a yuletide scene Shopping in Dowtown Asheville throughout the House, with 1000 red and white poinsettias seen throughout the estate. They stayed at the Grove Park Inn Hotel, and then shopped till they dropped the next day in downtown Asheville. It was a Christmas trip to remember, and was hosted by Keith Bradley and Maren Rogers.

Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive

Members of Berkeley Hall answered the call once again by providing overwhelming support to the 2013 Thanksgiving Food Drive on behalf of the Bluffton Self Help organization. It was another needy year for residents in the Bluffton community. Last year, 400 families requested Thanksgiving assistance, and this year the number was even higher. Thanks to the generosity of our community, three cars were filled to the brim as Janis Gatschet Schlossberg and Denise Frame delivered traditional food items to their Bluffton headquarters, along with financial assistance in the way of grocer gift cards and cash to assist those families in need. Thanks once again to Members of Berkeley Hall for making a difference this holiday season!

Players Amateur “2-Club” Donates to Two Local Charities The goal of the Players Amateur is to host the best amateur golf tournament in the country while at the same time, provide funds for local charities. It has also been a challenge to fund such an event and each year we must rely on the generous donations of our members and benefactors. This year, in addition to several different sponsorship packages that were offered, we also introduced a “2-Club” which was another way to contribute as a sponsor. Members received a “2-Club” shirt and hat for their pledge of $2 for every 2 recorded during the tournament. As a result of the funds raised, a check for $5,000 was presented by Players Am Co-Founder, Duke Delcher, to Bluffton Self Help and Hospice of the Low Country.

Berkeley Hall Club Frost Policy Because of the colder morning temperatures that we will be experiencing in January and February, there is always a possibility that the golf courses may delay opening because of frost on the greens. This is a good opportunity to review the Club’s frost policy and how it may affect all golfers with reserved tee times. • When there is a Frost Delay, the Club Golf Course Superintendent determines when the courses will open and the golf Shop will reset those tee times affected by frost. • All reserved tee times that fall after the official reopening time will not be affected • All times that fall before the official reopening time will be reassigned to the first available tee time in accordance with their earlier morning times. • The practice tee will reopen ½ hour prior to the first tee time of the day. When making times during this period please be aware that the decision to delay tee times is always based on what will be best for the long-term health of our golf courses and practice facility.

How to Get Faster Off the Tee By Andrew Rice, Director of Instruction

So many golfers are looking for a “miraculous” 20 yard gain off the tee. It is important to understand that there are five elements that go towards really long tee shots - genetics, physical condition, equipment, club delivery and clubhead speed. Some elements you can control, others you cannot. Here is an exercise to help you gain a few miles per hour of clubhead speed over time and allow you to pick up some needed yardage off the tee. The objective is to slowly introduce your body to the increased speed, efficiency and agility necessary to generate additional clubhead speed. Here is what is required:

Every Tuesday & Friday; 10-11am JANUARY TOPIC Friday, Jan 3 Driving Tuesday, Jan 7 Sand Friday, Jan 10 Putting Tuesday, Jan 14 Wedges Friday, Jan 17 Irons Tuesday, Jan 21 Fairway Woods Friday, Jan 24 Sand Play Tuesday, Jan 28 Irons Friday, Jan 31 Scoring Shots FEBRUARY TOPIC Tuesday, Feb 4 Putting Friday, Feb 7 Wedges Tuesday, Feb 11 Scoring Shots Friday Feb 14 Driving Tuesday, Feb 18 Short Game Friday, Feb 21 Putting Tuesday, Feb 25 Sand Shots Friday, Feb. 28 Irons

Specialty Clinics with Andrew

• • • • • •

It is important to get loose prior to starting your speed sets Using the driver you want to hit two sets of five golf balls with a two minute rest period in between each set There should be little concern for accuracy or even quality of shot - the sole objective is speed The first shot in each set should be at your normal driver speed Each shot builds on the speed of the previous shot The final shot in each set should be the absolute fastest you can possibly swing

This year I have had a golfer gain 8 mph of clubhead speed with ALL his clubs by diligently practicing this drill. If you can do two speed sets as mapped out above 3 times a week for a month I would be surprised if you had not gained 4 mph of clubhead speed when making a normal feeling golf swing. That’s enough for 10 more yards off every tee box! Click here to view the video of this golf tip.

Matt Cuccaro

Many individuals set annual resolutions with every intention of following through, yet life’s daily distractions seem to create insurmountable hurdles to reaching those goals. Here are a few key ideas to creating a more successful environment for you and your loved ones to enjoying a healthy, happy and prosperous 2014.

1) Immerse yourself in challenging tasks you enjoy and strive to master them. Rather than focusing so much on where you would like to be at the end of 2014, be thoughtful in choosing one major area of life in which you would like to improve. Put your attention and effort into learning more about that task and follow up with daily actions to experiment in that realm. Become enthralled with the excitement of testing personal limits, rather than putting so much energy into imagining how successful you will be at the end. Those who immerse themselves in planning and action get results, while those dreaming of the end result tend to get left behind when things get tough. 2) We are creatures of habit. Build your days around the healthy habits you choose by setting yourself up for success on the front end. If it’s fitness endeavors you choose, place your workout gear in a highly visible area. Keep a spare putter on hand around the living room if golf is your passion. Set aside time to read about your craft every day if business is your mission. By helping yourself on the front end, habits seem to fall into place. When distractions start calling (i.e. the TV or couch) those visible cues of healthier choices are likely to keep action and progress moving during moments of potential weakness. 3) Reflect on effort. The emotional satisfaction gained from an effortful activity can be a powerful tool. Use that tool to continue building. Think about the last time you put forth tremendous effort toward something worthwhile. Although the activity may not have been completely enjoyable in the moment, reflection upon that effort at the end of the task can be immensely satisfying. We are emotional beings, and emotion is what motivates us. The more you train yourself to reflect upon the satisfaction gained from effort, the more likely you become to give effort again. Use this effort cycle to your advantage and begin to notice that the difficult choices of making effort can actually become a bit more effortless. By immersing yourself in interesting, yet challenging tasks; setting up healthy habits on the front end; and reflecting on the healthy choices made following effortful activities, the motivation to continue striving becomes that much stronger. We are naturally curious and adventurous beings. Lean on these human tendencies to enjoy a healthier, happier and more fulfilling life. Matt Cuccaro has a over a decade of experience working with athletes, coaches, parents and administrators on the mental aspects of high performance. He served as Director of Mental Training for Junior Sports Corporation (International Junior Golf Academy and Ivan Lendl International Junior Tennis Academy) in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. While at the academies, Matt has assisted the development of numerous All-American student-athletes. Through Telos Sport Psychology Coaching he also works with businesses and athletes to assist them in reaching their potential. GOLF & Community

MAINTENANCE

Golf and Community Maintenance by Danny Malone, Certified Golf Course Superintendent

PAINTING THE COMMON COMMUNITY TURFGRASS

FROST DELAYS Many articles have been written that discuss the reasons why an early morning frost must delay the starting time on our golf courses. It’s been noted that an extensive amount of damage is caused to the turfgrass when golfers walk on frozen ground and results in costly repairs. It’s the responsibility of the Course Superintendent to notify the Golf Shop of a frost delay. Our maintenance work crews will then continuously survey the courses to determine how quickly conditions are improving and determine when it’s safe to begin play. This becomes a function of sunlight, wind, dew point and the rising air temperature. Until such time as our crews are able to begin preparing the course for play, the Superintendent is unable to provide the Golf Shop with a projected start time. Obviously, areas exposed to early sunlight will thaw faster than those with shade, however the 4th green on the North Course, is not exposed to the sunlight until mid-morning. Therefore, although it may look playable from the Clubhouse, the entire course must be in playable condition before the delay can be lifted.

Frost Policy • On days that are affected by frost, the club will establish a reopening time that will allow the resetting of tee times that were affected by the delay. • The practice tee will reopen ½ hour prior to the first tee time. • All times that fall before the official reopening time will be reassigned the first available time in order of the original start time. • All times that fall after the official reopening time will not be affected. • When making times during this period please be aware that the decision to delay tee times is always based on what will be best for the long-term health of our golf courses and practice facility. Thank you for your patience, as we work through occasions when an early morning frost delays the opening of our courses.

Last winter, the decision was made to paint rather than overseed the common area grasses with Ryegrass, which had been the practice in past years. Based on the feedback from our Members, not only did this practice pass the “aesthetics test”, but it also reduced our maintenance cost, since we no longer incurred the expense of caring for the winter Ryegrass with chemicals, fertilizer, and repeated mowing. Once the colder temperatures arrive and the grasses go dormant, we will once again be painting the common areas. We’ll start with the Lifestyle Cottages and continue to the Savannah Gardens and cover the grass adjacent to the main roadways. We’re hopeful that a single coat of paint will last for the entire season. However, if we should experience above normal temperatures and rainfall early in the season, there may be a need to repaint certain areas common to the community.

TURF TWISTERS {a reprint from the USGA Green’s Section Record} Q. I’m a good bunker player but constantly frustrated by the fact that the sand in our bunkers is brand new, yet still is not consistent. Our superintendent says it’s impossible to do. Can you prescribe a treatment that can help us achieve better consistency? A. Bunkers are found throughout the golf course, and the different locations make it virtually impossible for them to play exactly the same. Golf is an outdoor game and sand consistency is neither possible nor particularly desirable. Even identically designed and constructed bunkers will play differently due to differing exposure to sun, wind, rain and varying levels of play. We cannot recommend anything aside from having the same sand in all of the bunkers and raking them in a similar fashion. Golfers must take some responsibility and adjust for playability variation that will naturally occur.

Okatie River Boat Cruises No cruises are scheduled for Jan. and Feb. while the Pontoon Boat undergoes routine maintenance. *24-hour advanced reservations are required for the Kayak Nature Tour and Cruises.

Winter is a Great Time of Year to Kayak There are subtle changes that mark the seasonal changes along the Okatie River in the winter. Since there are few deciduous trees to signal the transition from fall to winter and winter to spring in our maritime forests, we must look at the changing hues of the grasses that punctuate the coastal landscape. The perennial cordgrass for example, turns from bright green to muted shades of gray and brown and though it is rather drab in appearance, the deteriorating cordgrass is a vital source of food and cover for the wildlife. Cooler temperatures and shorter days dramatically inhibit the growth of plankton and with fewer particles suspended in the water there is a relative clearness in the water compared to the nutrient laden cloudiness that is seen in summer. Clearer water provides an opportunity to visually explore the river bed, especially in the shallows and at the edge – where the grass and water meet. You’ll observe pinfish flounder, redfish, oysters, small rays and blue crab. You’ll hear the sound of the dry and brittle grasses rustling in the breeze, see the behaviors of migrating birds, watch an eagle gracefully fetch a bunch of grass to use for its nest, or a school of fish dart around beneath your boat.

Golf Causing Lower Back Pain?

By Derek Lemire, Director of the Spa & Fitness Center Golfers usually assume that lower back pain is caused by a weak back, but it is often a result of inflexibility in the thoracic spine and hips. Try this test and exercise to do a quick check to see if this might affect you. STEP #1 Start with your left foot forward. STEP #2 Push your right hand against the wall and maintain that position with your head and hands. STEP #3 Keep your knees bent and stable, do not let them move. STEP #4 Reach back with your left arm and judge to see if you can touch the wall keeping your head facing forward. If you can’t do this easily, then you have restrictions in your thoracic spine and most likely in your hips as well.
