Neighbors Helping Neighbors Through Bluffton Self Help

For 17 years, Bluffton Self Help has assisted our neighbors in critical need while supporting their efforts to become self-reliant. Berkeley Hall members continue to support this local charity and this year marks the club’s 8th organized food drive. What a remarkable way to give back to our community! Shown here are Janis Schlossberg Gatschet and Denise Frame who represent the many generous members who contributed food, grocery cards and checks for the 2015 Thanksgiving food drive.

Toys for Tots Progressive Dinner On Sunday, December 13th, Members enjoyed a Sugar and Spice Tour through three of the most beautifully decorated homes in Berkeley Hall, as a Progressive Dinner was held to collect toys for needy children of Beaufort County. Each home served a festive menu of heavy hors d’oeuvers with a Club Full Bar. All of the toys were generously donated by our Members and were on display in the Grand Foyer of the clubhouse before they were presented to several Marines from Paris Island who were there as Santa’s helpers. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation assists the U. S. Marine Corps in providing a tangible sign of hope to economically disadvantaged children at Christmas time. The primary goal of the Foundation is the same as that of the overall Toys for Tots Program – “ to deliver through a new toy at Christmas a message of hope to those less fortunate.”

ARB Update

by Wendy Wagner, ARB Administrator

2015 was another busy year for new home construction in Berkeley Hall with 13 new homes completed, 8 additional homes that are presently under construction and 11 plans submitted to the ARB for review and final approval. This increases the total number of homes completed in the community to 300, which equates to a build out of 54.2%. In order to preserve the attractive nature of our neighborhoods, there will always be need for some upkeep and repair, particularly mailboxes when the paint on the posts begin to fade and the boxes begin to rust. If your post is in need of repainting, the color to use is Charleston Green. This paint can be found at the local Sherwin Williams store. If the mailbox itself is worn and rusted, it needs to be replaced. If you prefer, this work can be performed by our community maintenance crew by contacting the ARB. A new mailbox with lettering and re-painting of the post will cost $50.30. If you require additional work such as replacing the post to repair wood rot, the cost will be $68. If I can be of assistance with this or any other issue regarding your property, please call or stop by the clubhouse. I can be reached at 843.815.8443 or e-mail wwagner@berkeleyhallclub.com.

From the author of the smash-hit bestseller Firefly Lane and True Colors comes Winter Garden, a powerful, heartbreaking novel that illuminates the intricate mother-daughter bond and explores the enduring links between the present and the past. Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard: the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters. As children, the only connection between them was the Russian fairy tale Anya sometimes told the girls at night. On his deathbed, their father extracts a promise from the women in his life: the fairy tale will be told one last time - and all the way to the end. Alternating between the past and present, Meredith and Nina will finally hear the singular, harrowing story of their

An Unnecessary Woman by Rabih Alameddine Monday, February 1 @ 3pm; Ladies Locker Room One of the Middle East’s most celebrated voices, Rabih Alameddine follows his international bestseller, The Hakawati, with an enchanting story of a book-loving, obsessive, seventy-two-year-old “unnecessary” woman. Aaliya Saleh lives alone in her Beirut apartment, surrounded by stockpiles of books. Godless, fatherless, childless, and divorced, Aaliya is her family’s “unnecessary appendage.” Every year, she translates a new favorite book into Arabic, then stows it away. The thirtyseven books that Aaliya has translated over her lifetime have never been read―by anyone. In this breathtaking portrait of a reclusive woman’s late-life crisis, listeners follow Aaliya’s digressive mind as it ricochets across visions of past and present Beirut. As she tries to overcome her aging body and spontaneous emotional upwelling’s, Aaliya is faced with an unthinkable disaster that threatens to shatter the little life she has left. ~ Amazon.com For further information concerning the Ladies Book Club, please contact Wendy Hansen at hansenwendyj@gmail.com.

There are subtle changes that mark the seasonal changes along the Okatie River in the winter. Since there are few deciduous trees to signal the transition from fall to winter and winter to spring in our maritime forests, we must look at the changing hues of the grasses that punctuate the coastal landscape. The perennial cordgrass for example, turns from bright green to muted shades of gray and brown, and though it is rather drab in appearance, the deteriorating cordgrass is a vital source of food and cover for the wildlife. Cooler temperatures and shorter days dramatically inhibit the growth of plank-

Clearer water provides an opportunity to visually explore the river bed, especially in the shallows and at the edge – where the grass and water meet. You’ll observe pinfish flounder, redfish, oysters, small rays and blue crab. You’ll hear the sound of the dry and brittle grasses rustling in the breeze, see the behaviors of migrating birds, watch an eagle gracefully fetch a bunch of grass to use for its nest, or a school of fish dart around beneath your boat. Remember to dress properly and have your binoculars ready. There is a lot to see! Frost Policy The colder morning temperatures that we will experience over the next few months may the delay opening of our golf courses because of frost on the greens. This is a good time to review the Club’s frost policy and how it may affect golfers with reserved tee times. • When there is a Frost Delay, the Club Golf Course Superintendent determines when the courses will open and the Golf Shop will reset those tee times affected by frost. • All reserved tee times that fall after the official reopening time will not be affected • All times that fall before the official reopening time will be reassigned to the first available tee time in accordance with their earlier morning times. • The practice tee will reopen ½ hour prior to the first tee time of the day. When making times during this period, please be aware that the decision to delay tee times is always based on what will be best for the long-term health of our golf courses and practice facility.

How to Stay in the Present to Perform Your Best on The Course by Krista Dunton, Senior Instructor

Krista Dunton

This is the first of a three part series that focuses on the mental and emotional management skills which are required to clear your mind of distractions and hit your best shots free of tension and over thinking. Golfers need a simple formula for performance to allow them to take control of their game and emotions – the four little r’s.

routine hit ball

refocus

Results

react

relax In order to keep your mind performing at an optimal state under pressure, it is important to focus more on the Process than the Results. The “four little “r’s” stand for Routine-React-Relax and Refocus. If you perform all of these fairly well, then the Results will take care of themselves. Too often players are so focused on the Result that they neglect to do the important steps that lead to successful results. The outcome we can’t necessarily control, but we can control what we do prior to that. By distinguishing between what you can and cannot control, it frees you up from becoming distracted by conditions such as weather, playing partners, poor lies and bad breaks. Let’s begin with the first little “r” - Routine. Routine In order to perform your best under pressure you need a routine. Think about a basketball player on the free throw line with no time on the clock and a free throw to make. They follow the same routine they would in practice which allows the player to perform unconsciously. There are physical and mental parts to any routine. Behind the golf ball is the area I call the “Think Box”. Do all your decision making away from the ball in the Think Box. Determine your yardage, target, your club selection and landing area. Visualize the shot and commit to four things;

16

Think Box

1) The club you have chosen, 2) The shot you are going to hit, 3) The swing you are going to use and, 4) Your ability to hit the shot. The best way to do this is simply to “state your intention.” Tell yourself what you are going to do with the shot Midway between the Think Commitment Line Box and the ball is an invisible line called the Commitment Line. Once you cross the commitment line, you need to have a repeatable physical routine on how you set up to the ball which guarantees that your posture, ball position and alignment are all correct. You are now in The Play Box. This is where you have to react and swing. The Play Box No more thinking or decision making. Get comfortable, tap into the feelings of the swing you are trying to make and stay committed to the four items listed above. If there is any doubt to those items then restart your routine. Remember to breathe both in the think box and play box, this will free up tension and quiet your mind. You should be able to follow this routine and hit the shot in about 30 seconds. Keep it efficient. This might take some practice on the range in order to carry over on the course but you need to work on it and own it. There are always two neurological laws in play on the golf course; 1) The Law of Frequency and 2) The Law of Recency. Law of Frequency says the body will do whatever the body knows and whatever you have done the most times. Law of Recency states that if you can feel the correct motion that you are trying to make, you then have 30 - seconds to execute the shot. However, you can’t have any other thoughts or distractions come into your mind that will disrupt your feel. So while you are in the Think Box and have made your commitments and created a feel of your swing, take that to the Play Box and execute without the conscious mind interfering with negative or distracting thoughts. You will always play your best golf when you are confident and your mind is relatively quiet. The next “r” we to cover will be Reaction and Post Shot Reaction, and how it will affect your emotions on the golf course.

Richy Werenski Earns Exempt Status on the Web.com Tour for 2016 2015 has been quite a year for Richy Werenski, Berkeley Hall’s Tour Professional and Member of the Web.Com TOUR. Richy graduated from Georgia Tech in 2014 and as an amateur he was selected as an All-American Collegiate Golfer, played in the Players Amateur in 2012 and 2013 Richy Werenski and won the Porter Cup. Following graduation, he turned pro and came to Berkeley Hall as an Aspiring Professional with a goal of making it to the PGA TOUR. While preparing that summer for the Web.Com Qualifying School, he won 3 mini-tour professional tournaments including the Vermont Open and by the end of 2014, had earned his conditional playing status on the Web.Com Tour. During the summer of 2014, he met the producers of the Golf Channel’s Big Break, who happened to be at one of his tournaments interviewing and selecting players for their next show to be aired in 2015. To his surprise, he was selected for the show and spent a month in September 2014 filming the series at the PGA National Resort & Spa Champion Course in Palm Beaches, Florida.

Short Game Clinic

“Big Break – The Palm Beaches” premiered on the Golf Channel in February 2015 with one of the most talented casts in their series history, including Collegiate All-Americans professional mini- tour champions, a Trick Shot Expert and an Iraq War Veteran/Amputee. Over a 3-month period, one player was eliminated each week until it came down to the final two contestants and Richy was able to prevail and secure his “Big Break” in a final 18-hole match play event. In addition to cash and prizes that he collected during the series, he also earned an exemption to play in the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship in July. The Golf Channel’s Big Break competition has proven to be a launching pad for many aspiring professional including PGA TOUR winners Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey and Matt Every.

Full Swing Clinic

While the show was airing on the Golf Channel, Richy began the 2015 Web.Com Tour with conditional status. At the PGA Barbasol Championship in July, he made the cut and earned $6,825. By the end of the year had earned $62,082 and ranked 79th on the money list which was good enough to advance him directly to the third and final stage of Q-School held in December. Richy finished the 72-hole Q-School tournament T-34 at -3 par, giving him full exempt playing status for 2016.

Feb. 23, 12-2pm; $60/pp Lower your scores with this comprehensive Short Game Clinic that focuses on all shots inside 35 yards, and distance wedges from 40-90 yards out. You will learn how to hit low, medium and high shot and how to properly practice your short game. We will cover chipping, pitching, and distance control. Thurs. Jan. 14, 2-4pm; Tues., Feb. 16, 12-2pm $60/pp {Minimum 4/Maximum 8 players} The Truth Is Out! To lower your scores you need to improve not only your distance off the tee, but also your approach shots into the green. This 2-hour clinic will focus on increasing your distance and accuracy with the driver, hybrids, fairway woods and mid irons. Understand why the pros who are winning are the longer hitters who hit their approach shots closer to the hole.

Needless to say, it was quite a year for this personable first year professional who represents Berkeley Hall on the Web.Com TOUR. So if you happen to see him at the Practice and Learning Center working on his game, we hope you will take a moment and congratulate him for all of his success. Click Here to Meet Richy

Hole #5 ~ North Course Preparations for this year’s Players Amateur

Golf Maintenance Update by Chris Young, Director of Golf Course Maintenance

Throughout the 4th quarter of 2015, the Lowcountry received over 28 inches of rain and not nearly enough sun to dry out the clay soils on either golf course. As a result, we often required players to keep their golf carts Chris Young off the fairways and on the cart paths - a situation that we try to avoid whenever possible. We experienced so much rain during this period that we stopped irrigated the fairways in September. Nevertheless, there were numerous occasions when early morning fog blanketed the grounds and created conditions similar to a light cycle of irrigation. When you combine saturated soil with early morning fog, we were left with soggy playing conditions for a period of several months. To illustrate how saturated fairways had become, this picture shows a plug that was removed from the 4th fairway of the North Course after twelve days Fairway Plug of dry weather in December. We certainly regret the inconvenience that this caused to our membership and will continue to work on projects that will help to mitigate this problem in the future.

Estate Pond Management During the summer of 2015, Estate Pond Management completed a sonar mapping of every pond in the community. Their mapping provided us with detailed information pertaining to depth, silt, locations of littoral shelves, and vegetation build up. With this information, we can work with Estate Pond Management to develop a long term plan for dredging and excavating any problem areas found in the ponds at Berkeley Hall. The plan will be implemented at the beginning of 2016.

From the National Weather Service: El Nino’s Impact on Winter Weather 2015-16 for South Carolina

El Niño is expected to continue through this upcoming winter and into the spring of 2016. Although El Niño is a warming of the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean and the overlying atmosphere, it has global weather impacts with changes in temperature and precipitation patterns across the planet. El Niño typically reduces the severity of our hurricane season due to increased wind shear across the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean. However its largest local impacts are noted during the winter with heavier precipitation typically occurring across the southern United States including the Carolinas.

Winter Projects for 2016: Tree Pruning, Cart Path Repairs and Drainage During the off season our crews will be busy working on maintenance projects identified on both courses. Trees are scheduled to be pruned along certain cart paths and we will replacing sections of cart paths that have been damaged by overgrown tree roots. The wet soil conditions have also identified locations on both golf courses that will require the completion of drainage projects to improve their playing surfaces.

Christmas Holiday Displays by Kayne Hoecht, Director of Community Maintenance This recent holiday season, our department assumed the responsibility for installing the decorations and holiday lighting throughout the community - work that has previously been outsourced. Hopefully everyone was pleased with the new displays. Over the next several years, we will be replacing and updating our existing inventory of lights not only to reduce cost, but also to present more impressive lighting displays. Our work on this project began last summer when we purchased a shipping container that we now use to store all of our supplies on-site rather than paying for storage. We also purchased our first strands of LED lights and other items such as cords, timers, and wreaths. During the installation process, we were able to determine what was usable and what materials needed to be replaced. As time goes on we will be replacing none commercial grade incandescent lights with new LED lights to enable us to connect eight times as many lights in one outlet. These energy saving LED lights provide a very similar glow as the soft light that is given off by incandescent bulbs. In addition, the bows, garlands and netting lights that are showing signs of age and are also scheduled to be replaced. It is our goal to make the our lightning displays more festive ever year for our Members to enjoy.

It’s Never Too Late to Boost Your Metabolism! by Bryan Coker, Certified Personal Trainer

Is it a struggle to shed those extra pounds? The answer could be a low metabolic rate. Some people feel that their slow metabolism is because of their age and they just have to deal with it. It’s true that age is a big factor, but try these simple tips to increase your metabolism and you may see those extra inches quickly disappear. 1) Drink more water. A good rule of thumb is half your body weight in ounces, which means a person weighing 150 lbs. should drink at least 75 oz. of water each day. 2) Up the intensity in your workouts. It is recommended that 2-4 workouts per week should be designed to raise your heart rate above 85% of your maximum heart rate. This should only be performed in short intervals with multiple intervals included within the workout. If you are new to exercise, then any exercise will have a huge effect on metabolism. We recommend speaking #1 to your physician before attempting such intense workouts. If you are on any medications with beta blockers, you will have a very difficult time elevating your heart rate and it should not exceed 100-110bpm. 3) Fuel your body with ONLY what it needs and ONLY when it needs it. This means eating the right foods at the right times. Empty calories and over eating all go to waste and slow your metabolism 4) Build muscle. This does not suggest body building or “bulking up”. It means building lean muscle. You have probably heard that muscle burns fat. Well muscles require fuel to perform and as a result will burn more of what you eat which increases your metabolism.
