Jerusalem

R

ecently I visited the Holy Land, including Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza, and Galilee, in company with Nicholas Porter M.Div. ’95 and Stuart Kensinger Yale ’86, a former and a current BDS Board member respectively. We visited places of ancient and modern significance, and met with Jews, Muslims, and Christians all working for peace and for justice in that place which needs them so much.

The holiness of places is inescapable in Jerusalem. Arriving on a mild evening, I walked through the Old City and in the space of just a few minutes encountered both the Western Wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher for the first time, my hands and feet touching places infused with centuries of prayer, not to mention the memories of events which had made these the holiest sites known to Jews and Christians.

Holiness and places are strange companions, however. The Roman suppression of the Jewish revolt in 70 AD led to the destruction of the Temple known to Jesus, and hence raised questions both of divine power and justice, and of divine presence. Where was the God who had promised to dwell in Jerusalem forever? Yet the disaster also gave the emergent Gospel a different kind of potential, because it made the presence of God strangely available not just in Jerusalem and Judea, but “to the ends of the earth” as the Acts of the Apostles puts it, or as more commonly mentioned in Berkeley’s life, “to the regions beyond” (2 Cor. 10:16). In the same Second Letter to the Corinthians from which our motto stems, Paul says—even before the Jerusalem Temple was destroyed - that believers themselves are the temple of the living God (6:16). Christians thus had a sort of portable sanctity, and paid little attention to the specifics even of Jesus’ own footsteps or haunts even as they made their own way across any and every terrain, bearing the Gospel and the Spirit as sources of holiness.

When pilgrimage to Palestine became possible for Christians in the fourth century AD after the conversion of Constantine, a movement quickly arose, however, to read landscape and scripture in terms of each other. Holy places were rediscovered (and sometimes invented), great churches were erected, and pilgrims went in great number,

as they still do today. The ancient reactions to this development were not always glowing. Late in the fourth century, the great theologian Gregory of Nyssa went to Jerusalem but was lukewarm: “praise the Lord, you who fear him,” he advised, “in whatever place you are; for no traveling around will bring you nearer to him.”

Many, however, long ago and more recently, have found the holy places added something visual and physical to their own sense of faith; that the Holy Land was a “fifth Gospel, torn but legible” as Ernst Renan put it. Even if they are not themselves the point, the stones can sometimes be read, or heard.

ent-day “living temples” of the Holy Land, the people of different faiths and nations struggling to live together, the landscape and architecture themselves would have been relatively inarticulate. During and between the visits to Temple, churches and monasteries, active and ruined, we met people whose love of the Land and whose hope for its future were rooted in ancient traditions but unmistakably contemporary in force.

My fellow pilgrims Stuart and Nicholas both devote considerable time to Jerusalem Peacebuilders, which works with Israeli, Palestinian, and American young people to foster their skills for leadership. We met with a number of exist-

ing and potential partners for JPB, such as Muslim educator and entrepreneur Dalia Fadila in Tira, Israel, Yehuda Stolov from the Interfaith Encounter Association in West Jerusalem, and Violette Khoury of Sabeel in Nazareth. We met also with a number of leaders of the Anglican Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East, and I had the privilege of reading the Gospel on Sunday in Christ Church, Nazareth.

Much of the time we were based in East Jerusalem at St George’s College, where Berkeley has been forming a partnership with the support of the Porter Foundation. Next year we hope to send a recent graduate to serve as an intern working with the College, and we hope Berkeley students and faculty will become regular visitors and contributors to its programs.

Jerusalem and the Holy Land are places that have a great potential for our students’ learning, because of both the ancient and the modern.

While the ancient holy places challenge us with the persistence and the courage of those who have kept the faith, their modern inhabitants are equally or more so a source of inspiration.

Not all our “regions beyond” are so far away, but partnerships in Jerusalem remind us both of the ancient roots of the story of salvation and the contemporary call to witness to the reign of God in all times and places.

erkeley students take full advantage of their winter and summer breaks to fan out into the world for a variety of formation experiences.

Landon Moore ’19 spent the first weeks of January working in the Diocese of Haiti at Bon Samaritan mission and school in Bondeau, a relationship arranged by Berkeley alumnus Sam Owen ’12. This past summer took students even farther afield. Patrick Keyser ’19 spent the summer in Rome at St. Paul’s In the Walls Church, working at the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center. Patrick’s work included teaching English, basic Italian, and computer skills to refugees who are assisted there. He stayed at the Anglican Centre in Rome, where he learned about the current state of Anglican-Catholic dialogue. A similar interdenominational experience was to the found at the Catedral del Redentor in Madrid Spain, where Laura Traverse ’18 helped launch Berkeley’s new partnership with The Episcopal Church of Spain in Madrid. “I entered into the rhythm of the community: praying most mornings with the priests and their wives; robing up for the services held on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays; packing and distributing grocery bags for the 150 or so people who receive their weekly groceries from the church’s program. I also worked closely with Spencer [Reece], who (so graciously and joyfully) took me under his wing—attending to his secretarial duties, we answered emails and phone calls, translated newsletters, composed sermons, visited area parishes, taught English classes to neighborhood children, led the Sunday evening Taize service, filed long-piled-up papers.” Derek Stefanovsky ’19, joined by his wife Katharine, who is a medical school student, pursued his Supervised Ministry program on Likoma Island in the middle Lake Malawi, seat of the Diocese of

Northern Malawi. “It was an incredibly rich internship experience, and tremendously helpful vocationally in terms of discernment. Of course, that richness was also accompanied by personal spiritual and physical challenges as I wrestled daily with the challenges faced each and every day by so many in terms of deep economic poverty and profound human suffering…. As the new semester has begun, we both find ourselves continually drawing upon our experience this past summer in our respective programs—one can’t help but have a different perspective, a changed heart and a burning passion after such an experience.”

or Berkeley students, graduation is not a single event but unfolds over three days. From the Saturday Evensong service, at which Berkeley students are individually recognized and awards, certificates and distinctions are conferred, to Sunday’s YDS service to Monday’s combination of procession and ceremonies with over 4000 Yale graduates on Old Campus and conferral of YDS degrees back at Sterling Divinity Quadrangle, students enjoy a marathon of celebration, worship, and proud moments shared with family and friends. Among the special memories of 2017 were Yale’s honorary degree recipients that included Secretary of State John Kerry and the one and only Stevie Wonder and a YDS Commencement that was drenched in both solemn ceremony and spring showers.

he Wesley-Royce Leadership Symposium in June offers Berkeley graduates the opportunity to come back to Yale for two days of reconnection and leadership development. This year’s program explored the subject of leadership in times of conflict and transition. Thirty-four attendees gathered to hear from presenters C.K. “Chuck” Robertson, Canon to the Presiding Bishop, William Rich, Vicar of Trinity Church, Boston, and Yejide Peters, Rector of All Saints’, Briarcliff Manor, NY. Drawing on his recent book, Barnabas vs. Paul: To Encourage or to Confront?, keynote speaker Chuck Robertson presented models of leadership from the early Church that provide timeless guidance for organizations of many kinds, including modern-day church communities. On the second day, Yejide Peters and William Rich held a forum on “Leading in Times of Conflict and Transition,” drawing on their experiences in parish leadership. In the closing session, Robertson, Peters, and Rich joined Dean McGowan for a conversation about the Episcopal Church as a whole and its relationship with the Anglican Communion, both organizations experiencing their own challenges with change.

he Berkeley Board of Trustees convenes each fall during the Yale Divinity School Convocation Week. In addition to meetings of the Board and its subcommittees, Berkeley’s Convocation also features the annual meeting of the Graduate Society, the Pitt Lecture, and the Evensong service, which includes the presentation of honorary degrees. This year’s Pitt Lecture—“Mission versus Heritage: Earthquake, Wind and Fire

bishop in Canada, where she also served two terms as Chair of the Primate’s Theological Commission of the Anglican Church of Canada. Not long after her election as Bishop of Christchurch, New Zealand, a 2011 earthquake devastated the region, including the Cathedral. Her leadership in establishing a new interim cathedral building, the famous “Cardboard Cathedral,” epitomizes the resiliency and hope that Bishop Victoria has inspired in her diocese.

A native of Bolivia, Bishop Griselda moved to Cuba for seminary in 1982 and was ordained to the deaconate in 1986 and to the priesthood in 1991, one of the first women ordained as priests in Cuba.

In 2010, she was elected Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Cuba. From literally grassroots priesthood in small villages to leadership of 46 church communities throughout Cuba, Bishop Griselda has committed her ministry to community development, meeting the most basic sustenance needs of impoverished areas and growing church membership through a focus on youth ministry.

“…and if necessary, use words” (St. Francis of Assisi) Berkeley graduates explore new ways to share the power of the Word

For The Rev. Spencer Reece, M.Div. ’11, the path to Berkeley and the priesthood came by way of poetry. Working for several years as a Brooks Brothers salesman, his life was buoyed by literature, poetry in particular, and in 2003 his poem “The Clerk’s Tale” was published in The New Yorker. A year later the collection A Clerk’s Tale: Poems was published and Reece was soon recognized with awards such as the Bakeless Prize and the Whiting Award. The year 2014 saw the publication of his second collection of verse, The Road to Emmaus, a semi-autobiographical rendering of, among other things, the passage to the pastoral life. The poem “ICU” relates a scene from CPE that many priests can identify with: In the neonatal ICU, newborns breathed, blue, spider delicate in nests of tubes.

A Sunday of themselves, their tissue purpled, their eyelids the film on old water in a well, their faces resigned in plastic attics, their skin mottled, mildewed wallpaper.

It is correct to love even at the wrong time.

On rounds the newborns eyed me, each one like Orpheus in his dark hallway, saying: I knew I would find you, I knew I would lose you.

Reece is currently working on a book of prose reflections titled 7 Last Words: A Devotional, based on the poetry of George Herbert, Sylvia Plath, Emily Dickinson, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Elizabeth Bishop, Mark Strand, and James Merrill.

Like Reece’s poetry, “These meditations,” he says, “take as their inspiration the idea that for the Anglican the word is a source of inspiration; as a poet, that works out

rather conveniently, and so in the book, I seek to honor and meditate on poets that have meant a great deal to me.”

Reece’s love of poetry is a gift he has shared with his readers, but the practice of writing poetry itself is also a gift he has shared. Following the advice of his bishop in Miami, Reece spent a year at Our Little Roses, a home for abused and abandoned girls in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. In the midst of a city renowned for its poverty and crime, Reece taught the girls about writing poetry and its healing power. That implausible journey is the subject of the 2017 documentary film Voices Beyond the Wall: Twelve Love Poems from the Murder Capital of the World. Directed by Brad Coley and pro-

Divinity school trains students to be compelling communicators, and Berkeley has produced a host of talented preachers, scholars and writers who have inspired generations of Christians. From Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor, M.Div. ’76—author of thirteen books and twice honored as one of the “most influential living preachers”—to The Most Rev. Michael Curry, M.Div. ’78— who, in addition to being Presiding Bishop, has published two books in the recent years—Berkeley graduates have a welldeserved reputation as leading voices in the Episcopal Church and in wider ecumenical circles. This and future issues of Berkeley at Yale will feature not only graduates who are published authors of note, but also trends in the way that the power of the written word is speaking to—and attracting—new generations of Christians.

duced by Hollywood actor James Franco (who also based a short film on Reece’s “The Clerk’s Tale”), Voices Beyond the Wall is a deeply moving account of how these girls “find their voices in poetry as they heal the traumas of their past and prepare to transition into an uncertain future.” An anthology of the girls’ poetry (edited by Reece), Counting Time Like People Count Stars, has been published this fall.

Having developed a love of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture, Reece moved to Spain, where he was ordained an Episcopal priest in 2011. He now serves as Canon to the Ordinary to Don Carlos Lopez-Lozano, Bishop of the Reformed Episcopal Church in Spain. This past April, Bishop Carlos and Reece visited Berkeley, where the Bishop presided at the Wednesday Eucharist and Reece preached at Marquand. The visit was part of a tour developing a network of support for an Anglican Center at Santiago de Compostela that can welcome and provide worship opportunities for Protestant pilgrims completing their walk on the Camino de Santiago. Berkeley Associate Dean Cathy George has also been working with Reece on establishing an internship program for BDS students at Catedral del Redentor in Madrid.

The Ultimate Quest: A Geek’s Guide to (the Episcopal) Church Jordan Haynie Ware (Church Publishing 2017)

A

s many Episcopalians are aware, our tradition can strike others as arcane or archaic (or both!). But Jordan Haynie Ware M.Div. ’13 sees much of that tradition as potentially appealing to those uninitiated who are the fans of the literature, films, and games of the fantasy genre. In other words, geeks. For those of us over 50, “geek” is probably a pejorative for the socially inept, pencil-pocketed oddball, but Ware’s audience fits the term’s more contemporary meaning as the obsessive fan of everything from Lord of the Rings to Harry Potter. Their numbers are legion, and they probably would find themselves at home in the Episcopal Church if properly introduced, which is the goal of Ware’s book.

From the sartorial mysteries (what’s the difference between an alb and a chasuble?) to the holy orders and worldwide confederations, the Episcopal tradition is rich in intricate significance, both historical and technical, which appeals to people drawn to the epic quests that are at the heart of these stories. In fact, the term “fantasy” belies the very real and deep human hunger for transcendence that animates them. C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia is perhaps a more explicitly Christian allegory, but similar elements of spiritual conflict imbue these

later books and movies that have become such immense social phenomena in recent decades. And the epic quest has the miraculous, even magical power to change the lives of both characters and readers. For Ware, “there’s hardly another word but magic to describe the transformational experience of piercing through the veil that separates heaven and earth, joining the heavenly chorus, and partaking of the very body and blood of God in the Holy Eucharist.”

The Ultimate Quest succeeds as a welcoming introduction to all-things-Episcopal in part because of its light and often humorous tone. In her account of the first Book of Common Prayer, Ware renders the

radical divorce from Catholic liturgy and iconography in the idiom readily understood by Star Wars aficionados: “We quit calling the Eucharist “Mass” and got rid of the word “altar” entirely. The iconoclasm had begun—think Kylo Ren throwing a giant tantrum and lightsabering a technological panel to death, only instead of a lightsaber we have more…traditional weapons.” Don’t worry if you don’t know who Kylo Ren is—Ware’s readership does.

With more serious theological subjects, however, Ware is appropriately solemn.

The overall effect is that the Church is about serious business, but Episcopalians do know how to have fun, too.

Every parish church understands that the key to the future health of the Church lies with the younger generation. Jordan Haynie Ware is speaking their language.

Christopher Beeley

P

rofessor Christopher Beeley M.Div. ’94 is committed to holding things together. Walter H. Gray Associate Professor of Anglican Studies and Patristics and an Episcopal priest, Beeley combines his academic and pastoral roles in such a way that his work as professor is an extension of his priestly vocation and his studies inform his pastoral vision. This refusal to submit to the flattened distinctions between various professions, roles, and interests—perhaps a refusal to let go of richer identities—is evident throughout Professor Beeley’s narrative.

His story begins in Houston, Texas, where he was raised an Episcopalian.

Although he did not recognize it at the time, Professor Beeley now sees how important his early experience of baptismal ministry was for his later call to the priesthood. From a young age, he enjoyed church; as early as middle school, he served as an acolyte and enjoyed his youth group. He continued his

David’s Episcopal Church in downtown Austin, TX. Here, as so often in his story, I was struck by how much time Professor Beeley has spent being a pastor outside of his academic work. Even while studying for his PhD at Notre Dame, he worked parttime as a priest in Indiana. He is one of the only professors on regular rotation at Berkeley’s St. Luke’s Chapel, presiding over the Eucharist and preaching almost every week.

Woven throughout his academic achievements, and they are plenty and impressive, is a steady focus on the lives of Christians on the most mundane level. This link between the academic study of theology and the lived practice of Christianity is at the heart of his work as a professor as well.

Just before our conversation concluded, Professor Beeley paused and offered an unprompted reflection on his work. At the end of it all, he mused, he does what he does, and studies what he studies, because it is integrative. Although he discovered Patristics early in his time at YDS, his study of early Christianity could have taken any

None of this ministry, though, even when he was exercising positions of leadership, was anything more than “just being a Christian.” In fact, Professor Beeley applied to Yale Divinity School before pursuing ordination, following the philosopher Søren Kierkegaard’s experience in divinity school.

Professor Beeley deferred his enrollment for a year, and it was in this year between—during which he got married at the same church at which he was baptized and confirmed, St Martin’s in Houston—that he perceived what he thought was a call to the priesthood. By the time he started at YDS the following fall, he was a postulant in the Episcopal Diocese

of Texas. Reflecting on this pre-ordination experience of ministry, Professor Beeley commented that he has found it important, as a priest, “to have experienced active and vital ministry as a baptized Christian.”

During his first semester at Yale, in the Patristics course many of us take in our first semester, Professor Beeley found the early church fathers, whom he had not really encountered before. Again, his interests were present before he fully recognized them. He wrote a paper that semester on Gregory Nazianzen. Although he did not plan it at the time, he would later write his dissertation and a book on Gregory, Gregory of Nazianzus on the Trinity and the Knowledge of God: In Your Light We Shall See Light.

After graduating from YDS, Professor Beeley worked a two-year curacy at St.

number of forms. He considered studying New Testament or Systematics, but it was the integrative nature of the Fathers which drew him. Their hermeneutical, pastoral, and systematic thoughts are all tied together, so that they are concerned with both the practical and the contemplative.

Professor Beeley’s current projects reflect this commitment to holding together the theoretical and practical and the way in which the great lights of the tradition can help us do that. Later this year, he will give the Costan Lectures in Early Christianity at Virginia Theological Seminary, a series of talks titled Early Christian Spirituality for Today, in which he will explore the theological basis and practice of healing the passions and promoting growth in the virtues.

Honoring Our Legacy: Bishop John Williams (1817-1899) Born in 1817, Bishop John Williams served as dean of Berkeley Divinity School from its inception in 1854 until his death in 1899—the longest tenure in our seminary’s history. Although he authorized no biography, an address on “Berkeley’s Three Founders,” given by Elizabeth Brainerd Raftery on Founders Day, May 3, 1966, tells the story of Williams’ life and devotion to Berkeley. Raftery had a long association with Berkeley Divinity School in the mid-20th century, serving as assistant to the Dean, then registrar, and finally historian.

This biography is the first in a series of Berkeley at Yale articles about prominent figures and developments in Berkeley’s history.

by Bishop John Williams. Unfortunately, he asked that no biography be written of him, so we have little to go on other than the statistics given in the Clerical Directory and tributes at the time of his death which described him as saint, scholar, man of the world and wit. To him is ascribed the quip that when the Pilgrim Fathers landed in Plymouth, they first fell on their knees, and then upon the Aborigines. Just as Williams Hall, named for him, has vanished from sight and a new and larger building is rising from those early foundations, so a new and stronger school is growing from the foundations of theological education laid down by him. His early statement defines his hopes for the School: “The aim, so far as I may speak for it, shall be, not many students, but a high standard. Employing the most improved methods and, and accepting the assured results of the best scholarship, steadfast in the sound principles of Anglican theology, loyal to the Catholic faith and the Holy Spirit of Truth, may the school be, and ever deserve to be, established in all generations to God’s honor and glory.”

John Williams was born in 1817 in Deerfield, Massachusetts, the son of a lawyer, nephew of the founder of Williams College, and a grandnephew of a President of Yale.

At the age of 14 (a year younger than Berkeley) he entered college, Harvard, but upon becoming an Episcopalian, transferred to Washington College, Hartford, now Trinity College. His roommate there was James Roosevelt Bayley, later Roman Catholic Bishop of Baltimore. Apparently each was strong in his faith as neither converted the other. He read for Orders under the Reverend Samuel Farmar Jarvis in the same house in Middletown which later became his Deanery. Like our first founder [Bishop George Berkeley], he traveled to England to meet churchmen and other men of merit, and became friends with Newman, Keble and others. Upon returning home, he was ordained, served briefly as Assistant to Mr. Jarvis, then for six years was Rector of St. George’s in Schenectady. At the age of thirty, he became President of Trinity College, where he was also Hobart Professor of History and Literature, and successively Vice-Chancellor and Chancellor. He gave the first Paddock Lecture at the General Theological Seminary and the first Bedell Lecture at Kenyon College, and received honorary degrees from Union, Trinity, Columbia, Yale, and Hobart. At the age of 34 he was consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of Connecticut and four years later became its fourth Bishop. At seventy, through seniority, he became Presiding Bishop. He died in his Deanery in 1899 at the age of 82, and is buried in Indian Hill Cemetery, Middletown.

It is as Founder and Dean of Berkeley Divinity School that he interests us this evening. While at Trinity, he gathered around him young men interested in the ministry and established a Department of Theology in the college. In 1853, due to pressure of work (which seems strange when one considers the amount of work

he carried through the end of his life) he resigned the Presidency and devoted his time to teaching. Realizing the need of the Church for clergy and a place for them to study, he resolved to found a divinity school. On May 3, 1854, just 112 years ago today, the State Assembly granted a charter enabling him to establish the Berkeley Divinity School in Middletown, Connecticut. Mr. Jarvis’ son-in-law, Mr. Hall, had given Jarvis House for this purpose.

The first days in Middletown were like those later years in New Haven. One building contained the School, the beautiful Jarvis House with its iron balcony, curved stairway, and marble fireplaces before which Lafayette once warmed himself when the house was an inn. Dr. Kalter now warms himself before one of these fireplaces in his apartment, and the other is in the Ladd House. The candlesticks, one on a mantel here, now stand on a Hostel mantelpiece; the bust of Dante on which daring students sometimes hung their hats in Bishop Williams’ study now acts as a bookend on the

office shelves. The desk at which the Bishop spent long hours is also in the Hostel.

Gradually buildings were added; the Wing building, a rather ugly dormitory, the refectory, faculty houses, Williams Library which, like Urban Hall, was named for an illustrious Dean and which contained classrooms and offices. In the Chapel of St. Luke, given by Mrs. Mary Alsop Mutter in memory of her physician husband, was a chalice and paten and a small altar which are among our most treasured possessions. They are recorded thus in Memoirs of Bishop Seabury: “The altar whereon during his rectorate of the old church of St. James’s, New London, Bishop Seabury was wont to offer the Eucharistic Sacrifice; and the chalice and the paten, have been religiously preserved for the same use in the Chapel of the Berkeley Divinity School in Middletown.” These were also used in our “Upper Room” in New Haven until the chapel was enlarged. Middletown chapel bore the school seal which records our connection to Bishop Berkeley: the red cross of Christ on the blue field of the world symbolizes the westward course of empire of which he spoke (for he believed in the great destiny awaiting those lands westwards across the seas); the crest is that of the Berkeley family, a mitre bear-

ing ten crosses divined by a chevron. At the bottom is our motto: in illa quae ultra sunt.

Berkeley’s star continued its move westward to Berkeley, California, where our sister seminary, the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, was established by a Berkeley alumnus, Bishop William F. Nichols.

The school prospered, and at the end of ten years, 55 graduates were serving in 17 dioceses, and at the end of 45 years, among the 360 alumni, there were 11 bishops, 4 deans of theological seminaries, and professors in 4 others.

Fees were slight even for those days: no tuition fee, board $135, care of rooms $15, making a total for the year of $150. Students provided their own heat (fire place or coal stove), light (oil lamp or candles), and furniture (Salvation Army? or Goodwill?). Services were: Morning and Evening Prayer on week-days with Litany or Intercessions at noon. Holy Communion “at an early hour” Sundays, Thursdays, and Holy Days.” This indefinite “early hour” was reported later by Dean Ladd who posted a notice on the chapel door stating “Services are held when the bell rings.” “Recitations” were held Monday through Friday at 10:00 and 11:00 A.M.; NOON; and 3:00, 4:00, and 7:00 P.M. After the first few years, admission was rather stiff: (1) an examination on some portion of the New Testament in Greek with special attention to grammar: (2) contents of the English Bible: (3) English Composition with special reference to clearness and correctness of expression. A certificate of graduation was given to students “who have satisfactorily completed the full course of study and satisfied all legal charges for board and other indebtedness.” The B.D. degree was not given until 1899. As the Dean was also Presiding Bishop of the Church, ordination service in Holy Trinity Church, Middletown, took the place of graduation exercises.

The students were the Bishop’s first concern. As he was unmarried, they were his family, and tributes to him at his death bear witness to the respect and devotion they felt for him. He was a true Father-in-God to all

his three flocks, He, like [Bishop] Berkeley, must have been a man of great physical stamina as well as calmness of spirit to have carried on so effectively the manifold duties of Dean, Bishop of the Diocese, and Presiding Bishop of the Church without benefit of typewriter, telephone or automobile.

One forms a picture of the man from recollections of former students and colleagues printed in “The Bishop Williams Memorial” number of the Berkeley Divinity School Bulletin published in 1917 at the 100th anniversary of his birth. He must have been a commanding figure of grandeur and distinction, for he was very tall, towering head and shoulders above most people. As Professor Merrill wrote: “Bishop Williams was too big and dignified to be quaint, but he was certainly picturesque.” He wore gaiters, apron, long frock coat and wing collar, and his piecing grey eyes looked out from goldrimmed spectacles which were usually worn on his forehead, but which with a certain grimace, fell into place on the bridge of his aquiline nose. “In stature, in intellect, in dignity of bearing he was a king of men. His unaffected simplicity, his breadth of human sympathy and his wit brought him near to all he met” (Dr. Seymour).

Like Dean Ladd, Bishop Williams was thoroughly democratic and had a great dislike of pretense or display. He had a wellordered, well-furnished, and alert mind, a keen sense of humor, and a sparkling, kindly wit. As a teacher, he was superb, able to transmit his thoughts clearly and directly, and he was impatient with narrowness and looseness in thinking. “He taught his students to be simple, sensible and direct, and to keep their thoughts in order” (Dean Hodges). He was a statesman of the Church, and a power in the House of Bishops. “By his wise presentation of the Church, its teachings and its ways, he commended it the confidence and good will of the people and helped to give it a new place of influence” (Bishop Lines). “He has a mind that loved and trusted truth and was not much afraid of light or liberty” (Bishop Brewster).
