Berkeley County Library System Welcomes New Director Gene Brunson

Importance of a Strong Relationship with Schools and the Public Library System

We are excited to say that after a nationwide search, the next director for BCLS is one of our own. Please join us in welcoming Gene Brunson as the new director of BCLS. Gene has served BCLS as the Technology Director for more than 22 years. His extensive background in the library industry started when he was a freshman at the College of Charleston working as an intern for Charleston County Library where he worked for the next four years in various departments of the library and worked in a regional branch for Charleston County Library System under his mentor, Cynthia Hurd, one of the Charleston Emanuel AME victims.

School partnerships can be hard to establish, and when they can, sometimes they can be just as hard to maintain. However, it only takes one school to see the worth of the public library and want to be on board with enhancing and stretching services from both organizations for the betterment of students and the community as a whole.

He has also worked in the school library at MUSC and in the medical library at USC School of Medicine while he earned his Masters of Library Science and Information from USC. In his introduction to County Council members on Jan. 9th, BCLS board chair Patricia Richards explained the unanimous vote for Brunson.

“Gene was a fabulous fit for the position as director because … he not only handled all the technology but he touched virtually every aspect of the library,” Richards said.

From cataloging, to shelving, to reference, not to mention his role of automating BCLS during the dawn of the internet, he has done it all.

Under his leadership, BCLS Gene Brunson, BCLS Library Director will continue to move forward, setting the standards for the “library of tomorrow.” When Brunson took office in January he wasted no time assessing the critical needs of BCLS, which included meeting with department heads of county administration. He also began looking for new opportunities and planting seeds to expand and add library services in some the county’s new and vastly growing communities.

In his first meeting with BCLS’s leadership team which consist of all the library branch managers and department heads, he asked each of them to describe their idea of their “library of tomorrow.”

Leadership members took turns writing down their thoughts and then placed them into a box. Brunson then gathered the box and ceremoniously “threw” the box out the door, thus encouraging his team to work together and to think “outside the box.” The ideas generated by this exercise will be revisited as a team, with all BCLS staff members, other library systems throughout the nation, as well as with community members and county administration in a desire to take BCLS and Berkeley County to the next level of library services.

Due to such a strong partnership with representatives from Cane Bay Middle School, Berkeley County Library System’s Young Adult Librarian, BriAnne Baxley, was asked to represent BCLS, alongside Shannon Biggar of CBMS, at the South Carolina State Library.

The two presented some of their previous success with joint programs like an overnight lock-in at the school and the true benefit of a strong partnership.

Explaining both schools and libraries have a shared interest in developing the necessary skills of students to succeed, skills that also benefit their communities.

Their partnership has proven that a strong relationship between the two organizations can help enhance services and outreach not only to the students but the community as well.

St. Stephen Branch Manager Presents at 2017 America Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Convention BCLS is proud to recognize Tina Chenoweth, St. Stephen Library’s branch manager, for her presentation entitled “Inclusive Programming: The Power of Accessible Board Games.”

Together with Dr. Clayton A. Copeland with the University of South Carolina, she presented a workshop at the 2017 ALA Midwinter convention in Atlanta, GA. The workshop came about following a win at the poster session of last year's SCLA conference.

The workshop addressed the concepts of inclusion and ability, and gave practical advice on how to adapt board games so that they are accessible to everyone.

A train table was donated to the Goose Creek library after 2 year old Makhi McGahee and his family moved here from Spartanburg County and discovered the library lacked what Makhi loved most about his former hometown's library: choo-choo trains. Makhi set about on a mission.

"He just loves going to the library, and picking up books, and playing with choo-choo trains. The only thing he kept asking for was trains," his mom said. So when a Spartanburg County friend posted on Facebook that she had a train table to give away, Makhi's family sprang into action.

They put the table on the moving truck and asked the library if they could set it up for all children to enjoy. "It is such a joy to see the kids glowing with excitement and they race toward the train table at the library and instantly jump into playing with it and playing with the other kids," Makhi's mom said.”

Voting for the 2016 - 2017 South Carolina Book Awards will close Friday, March 3, 2017.

The South Carolina Book Award program includes a vetting process for each of the four levels of books. Committees composed of school librarians, public librarians, teachers, parents, and students prepare a list of 20 books for each level. Students who have read a minimum of three books (five books for picture book level) vote in February each year for the book they feel is the best. The winning authors are honored at the association’s annual conference held each March.

LEGOs® have been a huge hit at the library thanks to Lowcountry LEGO® User Group (Lowcountry LUG). Families have enjoyed playing with bricks and viewing amazing creations at LEGO® Day events at the Hanahan and Sangaree Libraries. In fact, Hanahan’s most recent LEGO® Day event attracted more than 130 attendees!

According to Bradley Scrio, Lowcountry LUG’s president, the company “was started with a passion for LEGO® and desire to share that passion with a younger audience through shows/exhibitions [and] build meetups.”

Lowcountry LUG has also worked with Cane Bay Elementary School by incorporating LEGOs® into the classroom for a day and donating a 7000+ mosaic of Cane Bay’s logo to the school. Don’t miss the Lowcountry LUG in March and May at the Sangaree Library for more LEGO® Days!

@Sangaree Library The Berkeley County Library System welcomed community leaders and partners Monday, December 19th for a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the Young Learner’s Toolbox Learning Lab at the Moncks Corner Library.

Come join us for 90s classic films that are great the very first time you see them or the hundredth time you watch!

The ceremony celebrated the official opening of the Young Learner’s Toolbox Learning Lab, a section of the Moncks Corner Library that features multi-sensory toys, learning kits, and technology designed to encourage children to learn while they play. Attendees of the ribbon cutting included: County Supervisor William Peagler, Councilmen Kenneth Gunn, Joshua Whitley, Phillip Farley, and Caldwell Pinckney, as well as members from the Berkeley County School District, South Carolina State Library, and the Town of Moncks Corner. Supervisor Peagler cut the ribbon with help from a special quest, Santa Claus, who was portrayed by Mr. James Retz, a Berkeley County Library System board member.

Funded by a Large Competitive Grant from the South Carolina State Library, the Young Learner’s Toolbox (YLT) program offers assistance to families and children with learning, language, or communication barriers. This multi-dimensional program includes: a series of lectures for parents and care givers, the Learning Lab at the Moncks Corner Library, and learning tools and kits for parents to check out for at-home learning.

While housed at the Moncks Corner Library, the items are available to all library card holders throughout the county. Resources in the Learning Lab include learning kits to build vocabulary and language skills, plush reading buddies, and pre-loaded learning tablets, all of which parents can check out for home use.

Florence Lewis-Coker, branch manager of the Moncks Corner Library and project lead for the Young Learner’s Toolbox program, explains the need for such a program: “A few years ago, I had a vision: to help children who had difficulty learning because of mental ability. My vision did not progress until two of my colleagues assisted me by applying for a grant to cover the cost of materials for what would eventually become the Young Learner’s Toolbox. The Young Learner’s Tool Box provides toys, games and other hands-on activities to help promote their learning skills.”

New Coding Classes for Kids Made Possible Through LBMF Source: thedanielislandnews.com In January, BCLS kicked off a 6-week coding class for kids for the first time. Thirteen kids ages 8-12 registered to participate and learn the very basics of Scratch programming. As the class progresses, they will rachet the level up a notch each week, until they have created their own games.

The instructor, Susie Starkman, aka “The Code Lady,” is a programming language enthusiast and founder of Code Surfers, LLC, which teaches coding to kids in an after school program.

“Programming really teaches them logic,” comments Starkman, who is donating her time, expertise and materials for the sessions. “Everything needs to be done step-by-step.”

But those benefits aren’t the best thing about the classes. The best thing about it, class participant Nicholas Haas, age 8, says “… is learning how to make computer games and fun stuff.”

The class is the first of its kind from the Berkeley County Library System, thanks to generous support from the Lucy Boyle Memorial Fund (LBMF). In response to Lucy’s death in 2015, library staff and community members created the fund to honor the 13-year-old daughter of Daniel Island Library Branch Manager Timothy Boyle.

The fund named for Lucy has already created a collection of books on STEM subjects that she loved, including “Teach Your Kids to Code,” “JavaScript for Kids,” and “The Art of Lego Design,” as well as other titles of interest to teens. Now the LBMF’s mission is expanding to classes and workshops for hands-on STEM activities. The Lucy Boyle Memorial Fund, established last year by Daniel Island resident John Gilsenan, with assistance from several other community members, has received more than $15,000 in donations, including a $10,000 grant from the Daniel Island Community Fund.

Calling all Knitters!

When Knittin' in the Corner was started four years ago, we had no idea it would take off like it has. Every week 20-25 dedicated individuals gather at the Moncks Corner Library to knit, chat, and have fun. The group has blossomed into an open community program, drawing men, women, and children who want to knit or crochet all of various skill levels. This group also loves giving back to the community and during various times of the year, they will work together to donate to different organizations. At Christmas time we donated 64 hats and 5 headbands to the Berkeley Citizens.

Currently we are working on prayer shawls to be donated to local nursing homes at Christmas time. We would like

to challenge other knitting/crochet groups to join us in this mission and do the same. ~Patricia DeMenna

In 2012, as the Special Projects/PR Librarian, the library director and I became concerned by the loss of local, every day history. We submitted a Library Services Technology Act (LSTA) grant to purchase equipment and provide training for collecting oral histories and digitizing collections of papers and photographs. As the elderly of Berkeley County pass away, we not only lose their stories, but also their stores of knowledge.

Near the end of 2014, my job title became Digitization Librarian. All of my time is now devoted to The Berkeley County History: digitally collecting and preserving oral histories, anecdotes and photos project. Digitization involves borrowing a collection of Berkeley County-related documents The Jimmy Cornelius Stone (1938–2010) Collection or photos from an owner. Each item is scanned of photographs and ephemera are the result of (on-site), saved as an image, and returned. decades of avid local history and photo collecting.

Research, in addition to the owner’s knowledge, This collection includes photographs taken by comprises the history to accompany the image.

Retired Teacher is Keeping the Love of Learning and Wheels Turning The idea of a library, whose roll was once primarly categorized as a warehouse of books, has transformed to new heights, including as a place to continue learning and furthering education for all ages. Community partners join the library system to provide an array of seminars and workshops for customers. Topics have included how to manage a family budget presented by The Lowcountry Food Bank, how to start a new business presented by SCORE of Charleston, and how to study for the GED exam presented by the Trident Literacy Association.

One particular lecture series has taken the Daniel Island Library by storm, drawing over 30 attendees week after week. The course, taught by Daniel Island resident Hillyer Rudisill III, covers Philosophy, Humanities, and Western Civilization.

Rudisill describes the class as, “A no-pressure atmosphere” with no tests, only handouts so that the participants can follow along.

Rudisill is no stranger to teaching. His career includes: teaching for 19 years at Trident Technical College in North Charleston, serving as headmaster of Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville, as well as founding headmaster for several other Lowcountry private schools.

He retired ten years ago due to heart surgery but still carries his passion for teaching. Because he holds multiple degrees and has completed postgraduate work, he is very knowledgeable in his field and eager to share with anyone willing to learn.

After retirement, he taught a class at the Mount Pilot Senior Center and eventually started a small class at the Daniel Island Library. Participants range from age 50 to age 89. His only goals are to entertain and if nothing else, teach his audience something new. His class has certainly gained popularity, as it has grown from ten students at the start to thirty by the end of 2015.

As Rudisill says this class promotes, “Learning for the love of learning and keeping the wheels turning.”

Berkeley Career Express Program Helps Rural Residents Find Jobs On Tuesday, January 10th, more than 50 residents of St. Stephen gathered at St. Stephen Elementary School to register for the first round of the Berkeley Career Express program.

Those in attendance were anxious to take the next step in preparing for employment.

TECHNOLOGY Classes

Berkeley Career Express (BCE), funded by a grant, Google Data Center Community Affairs Grant, is a collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce, Library System, and the Department of Adult and Community Education to enhance digital literacy skills in the communities of St. Stephen, Cross, Alvin and Long Ridge.

For eight weeks, BCE participants in each community will participate in free classes and workshops designed to help them prepare for the workforce or pursue further education.

Students who complete the BCE program can earn a Work Keys Certificate, Basic Computer Literacy, and Educational Functioning Level Gain certificates.

The Berkeley Career Express program will offer classes directly in the community.

Classes will be taught by certified teachers and held once a week in the evenings.

“I am thrilled at the turnout for our first night of Berkeley Career Express.

Berkeley County Adult Education is enthusiastic about this program for the Berkeley County residents that will assist them in the Job Markets” expressed by Dr. Lillie Caldwell, Director of Adult Community Education.

Participants of BCE with a valid library card are also eligible to borrow a digital device, WiFi unit, and all other accessories, funded through this grant, to study and prepare at home during their enrollment. The eight week training series will be held in one community at a time, beginning with St. Stephen. After the completion of all four community programs, digital devices and resources will be given to community leaders to develop their own training site for future programs and development.

“Through the Chamber’s Rural Initiative and from our eight rural meetings it was identified that jobs and education was the top concern from the residents. Meeting with Google to discuss the lack of computer access, they became the catalyst for the Berkeley Career Express program.

The Chamber is thankful that the launch of the St. Stephen Berkeley Career Express site was a success,” stated Elaine Morgan, CEO Berkeley Chamber of Commerce.

“The Town of St. Stephen is elated over the recent developments with a new industry coming to our Town and now a program to assist our residents at being more work-ready” is reported

by Mayor John Rivers.

Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler comments, “Since taking office as Supervisor, my top focus has been on recruiting jobs and providing new, substantial opportunities for Berkeley County residents. Having the Berkeley Career Express in place further helps the public seize the new opportunities before them, enhances their skills, and prepares them not only for the jobs of today but also for the jobs of the future.”

O

nce upon a time, I was a lonely, big, empty box on wheels. I spent my days in the garage waiting for the day I would become something special. I would dream of hitting the road, traveling to new places, and making new friends along the way. The days slowly drifted by and still I waited. I never lost hope.

When I got there, the excitement continued as I was dressed in the finest clothes for a vehicle.

Ways to Get Involved 3rd Annual Tri-County Literary Celebration FRIENDS

President’s Post-It

The Friends of the Berkeley County Library System have had a busy and productive “winter”—such as winter has been!! Our “elves” were at Celebrate the Season doing the Santa pictures again and are really getting professional!! This season, we also sold marshmallows and s’mores by the fire pit. Both these events raise money toward library programs, but, also are so much fun. We are already booked for 2017 Celebrate the Season and are looking forward to it.

The 3rd annual Tri-county Literary Celebration is coming up on March 4 at Old Santee Canal Park and the Friends are really involved. The TLC this year will be bigger and better; more activities and events are on tap; plenty of authors, children’s activities, and the characters that were so wonderfully portrayed by local high school students in 2016. We need you to volunteer if you can help on that Friday afternoon, March 3, or Saturday, March 4 anytime from 9:00AM until 3:00PM. The FOL have book sale shelves in each branch library. The prices are posted on or near the shelves. Please stop and shop as you visit the library. Again, all money raised goes toward funding library programs. There is always a good selection of children’s books, hard cover books, paperbacks, magazines, CD’s, DVD’s, audiobooks, etc. Plenty of bargains to be had!

The Friends expect to have more fund raisers in 2017. Again, we will be calling on you to volunteer. We plan to do the concessions for “Movies Under the Stars” and need help for them. This endeavor was very successful in 2016.

Our meetings are held the 4th Tuesday of each month, rotating around the library branches. Check the Friends Facebook page for the time and location. Meetings are open to all members. Why not take the opportunity to become a Friend by picking up a membership envelope from the library and mail your membership? All membership donations are tax deductible.

Reading Partners of Charleston Looking for Volunteers Reading Partners of Charleston helps and mentors students who may be having problems with reading—maybe behind their grade level, maybe comprehension, and other areas. Reading Partners are in some of the Berkeley County schools and need us to help these students have the opportunity to read and understand what they read. What a great way to help our schools and get these children on track. The look on a child’s face when he/she realizes, “I can read!”, is priceless. I urge you to become involved… ”the need to read” is definitely a priority.

Movies Under the Stars Concession Stand BCLS and the Town of Moncks Corner will once again host more Movies Under the Stars events at the Moncks Corner Regional Recreation Complex this spring. Movies will be held monthly starting in March. The Friends of the Library will be selling popcorn and movie concessions at these events as a fund raiser for the libraries and we are looking for some volunteers. Friends Table at the United Methodist Church Annual Tea-Book Theme Night We will be hosting a table at the Annual Tea - Book Theme Night presented by the United Methodist Church in Moncks Corner on April 29th. Each table will be decorated as a different book theme.

This is the first total eclipse of the Sun visible from all 48 contiguous United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) since 1979.

On Monday, August 21, 2017, a total eclipse of the Sun will be visible in the continental United States. This total eclipse will only be visible on a narrow track stretching across the United States from Oregon to South Carolina. No other country will get to see the total eclipse this time. Join BCLS for this historical event.
