We are proud to introduce to you our new combination newsletter and program catalog. We think you will appreciate having upcoming programs and some news about us and our Friends group in one easy-to-use publication. Thanks to our staff and new Marketing Coordinator, Kristen Lanier, for pulling this information all together in a brief amount of time.

We hope you will share this quarterly catalog and newsletter with friends, neighbors, and family. Tell us, too, what you like or don’t like about it. Our goal is to make library services and resources better known to allow you to “Open Up” everything the library has to offer.

BCLS Gets Awesome Have you read, or listened to, or watched something Awesome recently that you borrowed from one of our libraries? If you have and want to share, here’s what you do; just drop your returned item into the Awesome Box at any one of our six libraries or M.O.R.E., our bookmobile. An Awesome box can be found at the desk where items are returned.

All materials that are “Awesomed” can be found on the library’s website.

There are 427 Awesome boxes in public, school, and academic libraries across the US. Berkeley County Library System is the first public library in the state to participate and offer this service. The free Awesome Box project is generously supported by the Harvard Library Innovation Lab, the Harvard Library Lab, and the Arcadia Fund.

Important Dates July 4 & 5 - Libraries Closed for Independence Day Aug 30 & Sept 1 - Libraries Closed for Labor Day June 6 - 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The South Carolina State Library kicks off the Summer Reading Program with StoryfestSC featuring award-winning authors, storytellers, crafts, and more.

The St. Stephen Library will be celebrating the grand opening of their new location this Summer. See the library’s website or Facebook page for details.

Staff Spotlight This quarter’s BCLS Staff Spotlight goes to Deborah (D.D.) Guerry of the Hanahan Library. D.D. has been a dedicated employee with BCLS since 2007. She sets a great example by arriving early for the day and making sure the branch is up and running in time to open the doors to the public.

She quietly goes about her duties without complaint and regularly has a customer whom she greets by name. D.D. rarely misses work and is always willing to participate in classes or webinars to improve her skills. She offers assistance to her coworkers and agrees to work longer shifts when asked. She takes pride in her work, especially making sure the children’s area of the library is in order. Often times, the quiet, reliable employees tend to get overlooked but they are the backbone of our agency and we couldn’t provide the excellent customer service we strive to provide without employees like D.D. Bring the whole family for a fun-filled event as the fabulous magician, Tim Sonefelt, uses his magical wonders to unveil the secrets of untold stories of heroes and heroism.

10:00 a.m. - Goose Creek Library “The Ugly Duckling” Get ready for a hilarious, heartfelt production based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale.

2:00 p.m. - Moncks Corner (Berkeley County Bldg Assembly Rm) “Aesop’s Fables” Join the Elizabethan actors as they stumble across the assembled crowd and decide to put on a showcase of their greatest hits.

6:00 p.m. - St. Stephen Library “Jackie Robinson” This baseball star played an important role in integrating professional sports. His story is brought to life in a production which is heartwarming, lively, and interactive.

LEGO® Mania Calling all creative minds! You are invited to join us for an hour of fun, making and builidng all your favorite things. This program is available for children ages 8 - 11. LEGO® kits will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Give Our Books New Looks Contest Calling all 3rd - 5th grade artists!!

We want to see you give our books new looks by designing a new cover or drawing a scene from your favorite book during the month of August.

*Seating is limited, tickets required for all performances with the exception of Moncks Corner whose performances will be held in the assembly room of the Berkeley County Administration building located next to Moncks Corner library, please see your local library at least one week prior to show for tickets.

Freeze Frame Berkeley: Teen Photography Contest
