In 2022, Berg is celebrating 50 years in manufacturing and engineering which built the infrastructure that connects family, friends and communities. Founded in 1972 by Roger and Pam Berg, the company has grown into a global, million-dollar manufacturer.

From its humble roots, the company has become a leader in the industry by tailoring its services to meet customer needs.

“Roger was an inventor and entrepreneur, and under his leadership, Berg revolutionised the industry,” “We carry his legacy of commitment to customers forward as we evolve our operations to work more efficiently and drive more value through our services.”

2022 Berg Engineering Staff Awards

Recognition within an organisation helps employees to realise how much their company values them, and that individual success helps to build their team and in-turn the overall organisation.

This is a vital factor which plays a key role when an organisation grows. It helps employees to build a sense of esteem which then motivates them to continue their great work towards a company’s goals.

Berg staff have been celebrated for their career achievements and significant contribution to our clients, with the winners of the 2022 Berg Engineering Annual Staff Awards announced at the 50 year celebrations in Brisbane (November 5) and Gladstone (November 12).

Berg Engineering Chief Executive Officer, Derek Berg, congratulated the staff for their

outstanding contributions to providing worldclass service to our clients across the globe.

“These recipients deserve to be recognised for going above and beyond in their dedication to our company and clients, Mr Berg said.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the highly skilled Berg staff for the excellent work they do across our workshops.”

Loyal and dedicated keith pavey, a tribute after 50 years of service to berg

When Keith Pavey clocked in for work at Berg Engineering in Brendale on Tuesday morning, he thought it would just be like any other day. But little did he know his bosses had a surprise double celebration planned to coincide with Berg Engineering’s 50th anniversary and Keith’s 50 years of service.

In front of his colleagues and family, Keith was honoured for his loyalty and dedication by having a warehouse named in his honour, as well as receiving a new Ford Ranger Wild Trax from the company’s founders, Roger and Pam Berg.

Speaking to Moreton Daily, Keith said he was shocked and a little lost for words at the kind gesture.

“I wasn’t expecting this at all,” Keith said.

“I’m really amazed at what Roger and Pam have done and feeling really proud to work for Berg Engineering – they have always been a great company to work for.”

Keith became the company’s first employee when he first met Roger Berg in 1972. He was hired as a fitter and turner and worked with Roger out of a Brisbane garage when the company first started. As the company grew, the business moved into a shed on the northside before outgrowing that and moving into its current premises at Terrence Rd, Brendale, in 1987.

In his five decades working at the company, Keith has clocked up just over 109,000 hours, which is the equivalent of 64 years of service for the average person. Keith works on one of the biggest

machines at the company, and processes 300 jobs a year which can be as large as a car.

“I enjoy everything I do here - it’s a job where you are constantly learning because every job is different,” Keith said.

“If I didn’t enjoy it, I wouldn’t be here.

“Berg Engineering has been a great company to work for because they look after me as much as I help them out.”

A good mate to all

Berg Engineering CEO Derek Berg, who is the son of Roger and Pam, said to have a successful business you must have great staff like Keith.

“Keith came to my father as a teenager and worked on the machines in a garage and helped my father to build the business into what it is today – one that employees around 200 people and operates in four countries around southeast Asia,” Derek said.

“Keith has always been a very loyal and committed employee, and no company can become successful without those kinds of employees.”

Berg Engineering General Manager Shannon Jansen, who flew down from the company’s office in Gladstone for the event, said Keith was an inspiration to all employees.

“Keith is great in helping the younger generation as he spends a lot of time with them and passes on his years of knowledge to them all,” Shannon said.

“He plays a pivotal role in the company, and I hope he will be here for a little while longer.

“When the time comes for Keith to think about retiring, he will definitely leave a big hole here in the company.”

WHERE TO NEXT...

As the year draws to a close and the celebrations of Berg rounding out 50 years in business comes to an end, we are left with the question; “What does the next 50 years have in store?”

In the short term, Supply chain constraints which have continued through COVID combined with the low Australian dollar will continue to drive the onshoring and re-shoring of engineering and manufacturing work and projects. Whilst we may not see a full reversal to a period where companies internalised all processes and skillsets relating to their products, a reversal to the current approach of specialisation is likely as companies look to internalise processes and functions to address fractured supply chains.

Australian to continue adaption of these technologies and I expect to see further investment in research, development, and implementation particularly in Hydrogen.

In the medium term, Government based projects for Defence, Rail, and Infrastructure will see long term contracts, followed by supporting contracts for remedial works and ongoing maintenance. This will place companies in good stead well into the 2030’s and possibly beyond who position themselves to be integral parts of these supply chains. These key infrastructure projects to support population growth will place increased demands on power consumption bringing conversations and focus on the global shift to renewables to the forefront. The shift away from conventional fossil fuels will force

In the Long term, implementation of Industry 4.0, Robotics, and Artificial intelligence will see a revolutionary change to the industry as we know it. While the initial concerns within industry was this would see jobs replaced by machines, it is more likely that we will see the skillsets required of tradespeople and alike shift. The new skillsets will need to include an understanding of robotics, and coding, for any automation and robotic movement that exists someone must be behind the machine instructing it how to move and function. The inclusion of automation and robotics will help Australian Industry remain competitive on a global scale irrespective of the Australian dollar and external market forces, and aid in addressing the labour shortage.

Irrespective of the timeframe, whether that be in the short or long term. The success of companies (particularly in Australia) will rest with those who can address the immediate labour shortage by attracting new talent, and with changes in what the next generation is seeking from their place of employment this will require an approach unlike we have seen before. Whilst talent retention must have an equal focus to talent attraction in the immediate future, it will become increasingly important as investment in training and upskilling is required to shift industry to the fast-approaching change in technology.

The only Australian OEM approved BOP recertification that includes a welding repair service

The Problem

The American Petroleum Institute (API) require BOPs to be recertified every five years, regardless of whether they have been in-service or not. This is to ensure they maintain their integrity and most importantly, work as designed when the need arises.

A collaborative effort between a number of key providers in the oil & gas industry and Berg Engineering, offer the only Australian OEM approved BOP recertification that includes a welding repair service. Previously BOPS had to be sent overseas for weld repair. This leads to a significantly longer turnaround time putting pressure on tight and demanding schedules that operators in the oil and gas sector face.

The Solution

Our partners in the oil & gas industry approached Berg Engineering for assistance. This was an obvious match for Berg playing into the niche of high quality machining and welding engineering under one roof. First step was to develop and qualify welding procedures that meet the stringent requirements of API.

This was a long and testing process, but persistence was key, never losing focus of the end goal. Together with our partner & BERG Engineering, a BOP can be recertified in Australia, stripped and assessed, weld repaired, PWHT, machined back to OEM specification, Non-destructively tested, protectively coated, assembled and pressure and functional testing.

Our partner offers a service exchange program which means that clients are not affected by down time when their equipment requires recertification. Faster turnaround times, quality repairs, full transparency, no corners cut. A win for the Oil and Gas sector!

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE TOURED BERG’S BRISBANE SITE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT A CAREER IN MANUFACTURING AND WELDING

The site hosted year-10 students from St. Patrick’s College discussing supply chain, engineering and project management. Berg Engineering Operations Manager Paul Otway said manufacturing, like any industry, needs new people coming in to learn and take up roles as people retire.

“It’s really rewarding to host a teenager who maybe hasn’t included a career in manufacturing or welding in their future yet, and for them to hear from us about how we’ve had a career last decades, that we’ve supported our families, that we’ve been able to stay in Brisbane while working for Berg, it’s my favourite part of the tour – that education piece,” Otway said.

really love championing this industry and hosting the schools is a fantastic way to educate them on what a career in manufacturing and welding and with Berg can bring them.”
