2. Scale & Seperation Modify scale of the mass considering the viewpoints from the Notts castle.

Also, considering the external staircase along castle road and plan the passageway.

3. Linking Place the atrium in the middle which can connect the separated mass internally. It also plans the main entrance and exit axes to allow access to the main atrium.

4. Volumise By adding layers to some mass that are created with only one single layers, I paid attention to the sense of space that the public can enjoy not only in the interior space but also in the exterior space.

The site is located within the Castle Quarter, sandwiched between Nottingham Castle and its wall/ cliff to the west and Maid Marian Way Road to the east. The Nottingham Castle cliff flanks Castle Road and despite its heritage and archaeological significance it presents a visually challenging face to the site at street level. In addition, 4 stories ground parking lot is located right next to the site boundary currently but it is to be demolished as a part of 'Broadmarsh Shopping Centre' remodeling project as it obstacles viewpoints from the shopping centre to castle and also from the castle to the city centre. Therefore, an organic design was planned to communicate with the public by providing citizens with an open public park that would naturally link the proposed lines of open street park to the site after remodeling.

The site is a uphill terrain with a level difference of about 8 metres, and to utilise the level difference, I put the external public staircase that open to the castle side and created main three external communal area and entrance along the staircase. The lowest communal space is a connection shaft from the Broadmash Shopping Center, which connects to the main entrance in atrium with external lamp.

A New Home for A&H Campus

Type : Timber Framed Educational Facility / Personal Academic Work Location : Clarendon Street, Nottingham, NG1 4FY Site Area : 3154m2 Use : Educational Use Building Scope : B1, GF, 1F, 2F and 3F This project, introduced by the NTU Estates Development team, is a real client brief and site on the University’s City Campus in Nottingham. The site is within the city centre on the outskirts of the campus on Clarendon Street.

As a structural characteristic of the building, it is designed to allow access from any direction of the site, considering the level difference within the site, and the layout of the building is particularly impressive considering the connection of feet traffic with the surrounding university buildings. Reflecting the characteristics of surrounding buildings that emphasized sustainability, I also paid attention to the sustainability of the indoor atmosphere and even in the construction stage by utilizing glulam and CLT structures.

Thus, by naturally linking the feet traffic from NTU law school to Clarendon street, and creating a new access axis that extends vertically from the midpoint, existing students’ feet traffic will simultaneously energize the entire university campus.

This building is also one of the projects I participated when I worked

in practice, and I was involved in RIBA stage 1 to 3. Parking lot for res-

idents is planned on the ground floor and all the above floors will be

occupied with residential units. I participated in from the initial spa-

tial coordination to all the drawings and modelling, and I was also

responsible for creating and organising the room / area schedules.
