Garden designers know that the key to a knockout summer border is flower form. It’s even more important than colour. Simply put, it’s about planning for a variety of different shapes when everything is in bloom, from the spheres and starbursts of agapanthus and alliums to the tall exclamation marks of foxgloves and delphiniums.

Nospace,noproblem.Infact, nogarden,noproblem! We chattedtoexpertOllie Turner, who’s beengivinganewrange ofindoorcropsatrialrun…

Aside from simply tasting better, why do you think growing your own fruit and veg is so popular?

Today 35% of adults grow their own produce in some way or another. It has proven wellbeing benefits And if you can reduce your stress and anxiety at the same time as your carbon footprint, it’s not surprising With rising costs, cutting your shopping bills is increasingly enticing too.

Can anyone grow their own fruit and veg?

Absolutely – in the garden, on a balcony or even indoors! Just bear in mind your available space and how long things take to grow, then follow the plant labels. If you don’t have a garden, give the Kitchen Buddies range [below right] a try. They’re specifically chosen to thrive indoors on a bright work surface or outside on a patio.

What are your tips for growing in containers?

They’re great as you can move them as you need to – into more sunlight, for instance Andthey’re easy to cover in netting to protect crops from birds and other pests. Plant three to a pot– strawberry, tomato and aubergine for example– and you have a good-looking display too.

This striking border design is contemporary, architectural and full of steamy jungle vibes. We’ve given top priority to shape and texture, making abold statement with the huge, sculpted leaves of palms, banana trees and New Zealand ferns, and placing these taller plants towards the back. Then come more foliage-focused choices, from the tactile copper-washed leaves of Ethiopian black banana to the rich pinks of the cordyline and glaucous grey-blues of hostas. For floral interest, we’veextended theexotic theme with

bright cannas, jaunty pink spikes of rodgersia and some unapolagetically colourful hardygerberas. Most of these plants need rich, moisture-retentive soil anda degree of shade and shelter– in a courtyard or urban garden perhaps; some are best grown in pots and taken under cover over winter. As always, you’ll need to give your plants plenty of water during their first season, and an especially good initial soak if you’re planting in summer.A regular feeding regime will benefit many of them, especially the cannas, gerberasand elephant ear.

Tip one is to deadhead and cut back flower spikes: we’re talking roses, lupins, hardygeraniums and the

like. Water them well and give them a feed and you’ll be rewarded with fresh new foliage, maybe even a second flush of flowers.

Midsummer isn’t too late to sow nasturtiums either. They’ll soon romp away, giving a sprawl of colour until the first frosts. For gaps in beds,a new repeat-flowering rose will

flower well into autumn, as will hydrangeas. Another star performer is clematis. They’ll ramble through shrubs, clothe walls and fences, andgenerally take on any late-season colour-boosting task with grace and ease. Embrace themthissummer; you won’t regret it.
