Philanthropy Week causing more anger than support Within your first semester at Bentley, one thing is unfortunately clear: pride in our school is extremely low. Everyone complains how the school is cliquey, how there is nothing to do on the weekends and how much they dislike being at Bentley. One way this is problematic for the school is that, because students do not leave here with a strong connection to it, they are less likely to donate to the school later in life. According to the SALC website, Bentley’s alumni giving rate is only half of giving rate of peer institutions, of which the school should be embarrassed. This is why SALC was created. Starting in 2013, the SALC (Student Alumni Leadership Council) was created as a way to educate students on the importance of giving back. Their flagship event, Philanthropy Week, is essentially a multidimensional marketing plan to raise donation revenue by instilling the idea of giving back while we, the students, are still attending the University. Philanthropy Week is broken down into three days: Awareness day, Appreciation Day and Participation Day.

The first, Awareness Day, is focused on getting facts out into the community about the Annual Fund. They spew information about how the Annual Fund helps cover their operating budget, is a factor in national rankings and helps the school be the best it can be. During Appreciation Day, SALC attempts to get students to reflect on what they like about being at Bentley. Even though, as mentioned above there are always things to complain about, everyone can find at least one thing they appreciate about Bentley. Aspects of this day have included, “I <3 Bentley” campaigns, picture taking opportunities and t-shirt giveaways, just to name a few. The final day, however, is the one that students have an issue with. This day is called Participation Day and students are asked to donate any money they can to the Annual Fund. While they ask for a donation as little as five dollars, it is the idea that they are asking for more money that most students are upset about. With the skyrocketing price of attending a university like Bentley, many students are arranging their whole

lives just to pay the tuition bill. For most of the Bentley community, asking for more money on top of what we are already paying is a huge turnoff and gives students another reason to dislike being a Falcon. In addition, the damage being done might end up hurting Bentley in the long run. The main idea of SALC and its Philanthropy Week is to get students excited about giving back. However, asking for donations now, in many students’ eyes, makes the University seem like greedy penny-pinchers, which further disconnects them from the school. Essentially, our suggestion to SALC would be to continue the campaigns highlighting what is good about Bentley, while lying off us already broke college students. At the end of the day, Alumni are more likely going to donate if they think back to positive things they experienced at Bentley, rather than how they were badgered to start donating even before graduation. We agree that something needs to be done to raise the sense of pride in our school both during and after we graduate, but asking us for money now is not the way to do it.

What are your plans for the future? I will be returning to Bentley next year to pursue a Master in Taxation. I will then be heading to PwC in the summer of 2014 to start my career as a tax associate. How are you feeling about graduation? I’m extremely sad. My favorite part of my Bentley experience has been the community

What can Bentley do to help you with this year? If only Bentley knew how to freeze time because it seems that my time here has just flown by. I only hope I have the time to step back and admire everything Bentley has given me. What is the most valuable lesson you have learned at Bentley? Don’t be afraid of rejection. It will only make you stronger and motivate you to do great things!

What are your goals for this year? My goals for this year were to have fun and take advantage of every moment I have left at Bentley. This has resulted in some late nights of cramming work in and using my outlook religiously but the moments I had with my friends this semester, even just hanging out on a random Wednesday night, will be the ones I will never forget.

Advice to seniors/ words of wisdom Stop and enjoy these next few weeks. Before we know it, commencement will be upon us. Take a break from school work and enjoy these moments because that’s what you’ll remember from this semester.

Nap of Shame Late last Friday night the Bentley Police received a call from a taxi driver who was on campus. The driver informed them that an intoxicated student had passed out in his cab. The only viable explanation I can think of is that the driver beat the Bentley student senseless and framed him. This devious plan illustrates a horrible defamation attempt against the good reputation of our student community. Clearly, the cabby took revenge for all the students who had stiffed him on tips or ran out without paying and decided to go rogue. Break In This weekend, a staff member notified the police of a group of students attempting to break into Lewis Hall. Luckily when an officer arrived the building was secure and no one was in the area. In response to this report I would like to point out to our readers that apparently there is a building named Lewis Hall somewhere on campus. Its purpose and location will just have to remain a mystery until students one day successfully break into the premises. Monkey Business On Saturday, a student reported seeing someone on top of the bookstore. The police report indicates that once officers arrived at the scene there was no one to be found. My respect is sent out to whoever figured out how to climb on top of the bookstore. Additionally I hope you can share your secret with me and help plan a heist of my necessary textbooks for next year. Call me. The Center of the Earth We all hate having to go to the library but sometime you really need to use it to get work done. Lately it has been feeling warmer in there; so warm a staff member called dispatch about this issue. Now I am no math major but I think I know a little bit about the transitive property. What are you looking forward to this year? I am looking foward to spending these last few days on campus with the rest of my senior class. We have a lot of fun events coming up like the Senior Harbor Cruise and Bahamas trip and I can’t wait to be all together one last time.

I have gained here. I have had the chance to meet some of my best friends here on campus who I now consider family and have gotten involved in some great organizations I will be sad to leave. where the devil lives down in H-E- double hockey sticks is a very warm place. The library where you study and cry your eyes out the night before your GB exams is a very warm place. I am hitting you with undisputable evidence right now, the library is hell. You may be thinking “Hey Police Log writer, I like the library, its quiet and I can do work there!” Well Vanguard reader have you ever seen an angel there? No? Well then its hell. Boom, case closed. High School Prankster You remember those rebellious days in high school when you would toilet paper a tree or house or play ding-dongditch? Well a Bentley student was trying to relive his high school glory days by egging a door. The Bentley Police were unable to fine this nostalgic student but we assume he was off doing other fun high school things like drinking Mikes Hard and getting his driver’s permit. High School prankster we salute you for reminding us of our past selves and showing us what how much fun simple vandalize was. The only question I have is where did you get the eggs? I am pretty sure all the ones from Seasons come in bags… A Little Party Never Killed Nobody First off a huge shout out to the women’s basketball team for winning the championship so we had a reason to go down to the lower greenspace! For the record they actually reported in the police log that there was a “gathering of student’s on the lower greenspace.” Why yes, thank you captain obvious, we do go to the lower greenspace after good things happen. You may as well report that students are walking to class at 9:50 in the morning. Seriously Bentley, greenspace parties are something we really enjoy and don’t get often. You may try to kill them for us but they are legendary when they happen. Heroes are remembered, but legends never die.

NCAA Division II BY MATT GUSTUS SPORTS EDITOR

2,151 Attendance at the Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, PA. Thousands more were watching the game live on television across the country.

Lauren Batista 7 Rebounds 14 Points 1 Steal 3 Assists

With 2,151 in attendance and thousands more glued to their screens across the country, the Bentley women’s basketball team won the Division II National Championship in thrilling fashion last Friday, erasing a nine-point deficit with less than six minutes left to take home the crown. The game capped an amazing journey, in which the team went undefeated with the perfect record of 35-0. All year, the team was ranked number one in the country and the goal of a National Championship was on the forefront of everyone’s mind. However, even with the expectations set so high, it is still unbelievable that the team accomplished this impressive feat. “Am I dreaming?” asked Coach Barbara Stevens, after earning the National Championship for the first time in the programs illustrious history. “I can’t tell you what a tremendous ride this has been for our coaching staff and the Bentley community with these young ladies.” One of the heroes for Coach

Stevens’ squad was senior forward Jacqui Brugliera, who was named the tournament MVP. In addition to doing significant damage on the offensive end in the team’s three games in Erie, Brugliera was a stonewall defensively. She was tasked with covering a myriad of Division I transfers who all had significant size down low, but none of them were able to have any successes. As highlighted in the championship game, Brugliera was always one step ahead of the opposition, taking four charges, several of which coming in critical moments. Early in the championship game, the Falcons were showing their nerves, as they were uncharacteristically turning the ball over and missing layups. Before five minutes had gone by, West Texas had sent the message that they were not intimidated by the top team in the country, as they raced out to an 11-3 lead. Eventually, the team got their emotions in check and battled back to tie the game at 24 at the half. While the Falcons had shot a woeful 29 percent from the

field in the first half, they turned it around dramatically in the second half by hitting almost half of their shots after the break. When the teams resumed play, the game stayed within one possession for 10 minutes, until West Texas started to turn up the heat. With Brugliera going to the bench with her fourth foul of the contest, the Lady Buffs went to work, going on a 12-4 run. Later, with 5:37 left to play, West Texas seemed to have full control of the game. After a Falcon three-point attempt rimmed out, West Texas guard Madison McLain, who played a total of 10 minutes in the game, came down and hit her third three-pointer in a row, pushing her team’s lead up to nine. For the first time all year, a nervous energy was running through the Falcon faithful, as the West Texas cheers could be heard back in Waltham. This is when the team showed why they are champions. “With our careers on the line and the National Championship at stake, you need to make big plays,” said senior forward Lauren Battista, who filled up

National Champs the stat sheet with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block. To get back in the game, Coach Stevens was forced to make the decision to put on the full court press, a move she has not needed to make many times this season. The move paid off tremendously, as the team quickly erased the deficit to tie the game at 60 with 2:47 left to play. “We usually bring out the press when we have our backs against the wall,” said gradstudent guard Courtney Finn. “We had nothing to lose and our careers and we were going to give it everything we had.” In just 13 seconds, the press, spearheaded by Battista, Finn and senior point guard, Christiana Bakolas, was able to generate six straight points and completely alter the course of the game. “Our press is a hidden gem,” added Battista. “We don’t pull it out a lot, but when we do we are confident, we are aggressive and we know we can get steals, make them call timeouts, force turnovers and take bad shots. It really was a game changer.” From that moment on, the

Falcons took the lead and never looked back. After West Texas junior forward, Devin Griffin, made the second of two free throws, Battista nailed a threepointer to give their team the lead they would not relinquish. With the clock ticking under a minute, a Bakolas layup gave the Falcons a two-possession lead. After making stops on defense, Finn put the game away, sinking six free throws in the final minute. Finn, who had erupted with a career-high 30 points in the Elite Eight game against Drury, was huge in this game as well as she finished with a gamehigh 21 while playing every possible second. Over her final three games, Finn hit an astonishing 30 of 33 from the free throw line, including a perfect 12 for 12 in the championship game. After a defensive rebound sealed the game for the Falcons, Battista dribbled out the clock and the buzzer sounded. The 200 students in attendance stormed the court and the Falcons had finally earned the title of champions of the Division II women’s basketball world. The jubilation on the court

lasted almost an hour, with many tears, hugs and pictures by those lucky enough to attend the game. During the ceremonies, Brugliera, Battista and Finn were all honored for being selected to the All-Tournament team, before the entire team received their hardware for being National Champions. During her post-game press conference, Battista, Humble as always, thanked her fans for their support throughout the team’s journey. “The support we got all week was fantastic,” said Battista. “The busloads of kids coming out to show their support, alumni, family members and everyone from the Bentley community were out here today and it was really amazing. Obviously we wanted to win for each other, but having that support, we wanted to win for all of them as well.” After winning the game and cutting down the nets, Battista climbed back up the ladder and sat on the rim, looking out over the court full of Bentley supporters. With a smile from ear to ear, it was obvious that she felt like she was on top of the world. And that is right where she belongs.

Campus Activies Board prepares for Spring Day On Wednesday, March 19, 2014, Bentley Campus Activities Board (CAB) announced this year’s Spring Day date change. For the first time in school history, the highly anticipated day is being moved to Sunday, April 27, 2014. The change was attributed to several factors considered by the dedicated executive board of CAB. The CAB concert committee handles the concert portion of the day, while the traditions committee focuses on the other activities offered on campus throughout the day. Last semester, the concert committee sent out a campuswide survey to gather data about the wants and needs of the student body. CAB was impressed by the number of respondents this year, with 1,259 submissions, nearly a quarter of the campus giving input. In years past, they noticed that underclassmen often responded more frequently to the survey, making it difficult to meet the needs of the upperclassmen. This year, however, the same exact number of seniors and freshmen responded. The survey results showed that the most wanted genre for a spring day artist was rap or hip-hop for the freshmen and sophomore classes, while juniors and seniors preferred country. A common trend on the survey comments was that students felt their voices were not heard in years past. Thus, CAB made it their goal to please the student body.

Because there was an even split on preference, the board felt it would be fair to listen to the upperclassmen’s opinion. In years past Spring Day has hosted a rap or hip-hop artist and CAB really wanted to be able to deliver to those who don’t have many Spring Days left. Initially, the committee knew they wanted an element of country, but also wanted to focus on name recognition. The most specifically requested artist was Ke$ha. CAB made their first bid on the artist, but she would eventually cancel her entire tour. After this disappointing news, CAB bid on OneRepublic but never heard back. They eventually had to

withdraw the bid due to time constraints. Finally, CAB hit a wall. Several other New England colleges have Spring Day on the same day and many artists were already booked. Moreover, many music festivals start in April, pulling new, popular talent away from college spring days. Another factor simply dealt with the overall scheduling. Many artists just aren’t in the area at the time and don’t want to reroute their tours. The only remaining artists on Saturday were acts that CAB felt would leave campus highly disappointed. The committee didn’t want to continue the trend of disappointment, so they requested that the university move the date. CAB’s

The theme for this year will be “Star Spangled Spring Day.”

agent saw more artist availability on the day and made the recommendation. The move wasn’t easy. Administration needed to approve the change and the athletic department and facilities would have to agree to provide the space necessary for the event. After four weeks of pushing for the change, the university agreed. CAB wants to reiterate that the sole purpose of the change was to get better artist availability. This was not, in any way, an attempt to discourage people from having fun all day and night. However, normal classes will resume on Monday. The first bid for the new date was on Eli Young Band,

BY michaela stephenson news editor

but they took a gig with NASCAR instead. Eventually they arrived at their current headliner and opening act, which will be announced to campus in the coming days. To keep a country atmosphere, CAB pushed for the concert to be outdoors, but administration required the concert be indoors to respect the quiet in surrounding neighborhoods. Along with this request, administration also required that the concert be pushed forward to 5 PM, due to Monday classes. The committee is very pleased with their decision and stands behind their actions. Not every student is a country fan, but CAB traditions worked hard to tie in other exciting elements into the day. The theme for the day will be “Star Spangled Spring Day.” This year the committee really hopes campus will buy into the theme, with all student organizations getting involved. The entire campus will be decked out in stars and stripes and red, white and blue. Traditions hopes that people will be able to take the theme in whatever direction they please. The usual favorites will be back, with a karaoke stage, various inflatables and pulled pork. While the theme on Sunday, April 27 may be Star Spangled Spring Day, the theme for CAB throughout the semester has been to deliver the best possible event based on what the students want. The students spoke and CAB listened this year. Stay tuned for an artist announcement and until then, start planning those Spring Day outfits.

Bentley University students help sales for nonprofit News Editor

This past semester Bentley students have had the opportunity to combine both business and art into a unique, rewarding experience. Kidz b Kidz is a nonprofit company that is responsible for providing a place for children to come together and create art. This art is then used to benefit sick children. The company is being featured in this semester’s Integrated Business Product course, where groups of students develop a business plan that focuses on the marketing, the finance and the operations of a company. The semester-long project culminates in a final presentation of a business recommendation, with the top teams moving on to present to company executives. The groups are composed of six to seven students, selected by the professor. The compilation of personalities and talents has been both a learning experience for students and a key to business development

success. “The collaboration of many majors helps create ideas within group members and helps each student to think outside of their expertise,” said Bentley junior Simone Silvera. “It has been very insightful to work with a group of students with such strong and intelligent ideas. I am an Accounting major, so it is very helpful to have students who study the marketing movements of companies.” Recently, Bentley students helped design the artwork on cookies sold by Wicked Good Cookies, a partner of Kidz b Kidz. The cookies were sold at Bentley’s Black United Fashion Show at the beginning of the month. “Students are cultivating ideas to promote online sales and identify retailers that are a good fit,” said John Shepherd in a statement to the university. Professor Shepherd is a senior lecturer in economics. “A lot of their focus is on the use of social media and branding.” Another goal of the students is to make sure that the company mission statement is actually consistent with its business model.

In this case, Kidz b Kiz would want to make sure that it would have a business model matching its strategy, which focuses on both developing empathy in children and raising money for childhood disease research. The Black United Body’s Annual Fashion Show was a perfect place to sell the cookies. Silvera is the director the program and created an anti-bullying theme for this year’s show. It focused on

raising awareness of bullying in both school and in the workplace. The campaign recognized the effect that bullying may have on students and other young people at home and at work. “My goal was to have long-lasting impact over students and people all over Boston,” said Silvera. “I brought KBK on as a vendor to sell Wicked Good Cookies products not with pictures of empathy, but pictures of love,

peace and hope- all signs of anti-bullying.” This came as no surprise to Professor Shepherd, who has become familiar with the exceptional commitment of students. “Millennials have a higher likelihood to both buy cause products and volunteer in cause programs. For some students the project has even sparked an interest in careers in cause marketing and the non-profit sector.”

Luckily it was pouring rain Saturday night as Koumantzelis Auditorium nearly burnt to the ground… figuratively of course. Seven teams took the stage in front of a packed evening audience to participate in the tenth annual Set The Stage On Fire step competition. The competition hosted Bentley’s own CRAZE AND F.I.R.E. squads as well as a number of competing schools and groups from around the region. Regis College, The L.I.G.H.T. Steppers, Tufts University, Street Hype and Sexual

Chocolate from Boston College were all part of the performance. This specific event included a special alumni performance that mimicked the step routine and formations of ten years ago. The original event was held in the Wilder Pavilion but later moved to Koumantzelis for more seating availability. Of the seven groups to perform only three teams entered to compete, the rest performed as exhibition. Tufts University edged out the runner-up Regis College to be crowned champion for the event. Judging for the battle was conducted by the honorable Lai-Monte

Seven teams took the stage on Saturday.

Four years ago, F.I.R.E intensified its flames with the introduction dance team Hunter, Lekisha Benjamin and Nahomi Carlisle. While they didn’t walk away with a win under their belt, The L.I.G.H.T. Steppers were an easy crowd favorite. Based out of First Holiness Church in Cambridge the team consists of children and teenagers ages 9-17. The church uses stepping as a safe way to occupy kids after school and spread the faith. The unexpected talent and humor from the young steppers kept the crowd in consistent fits of laughter. the dedicated members who wanted to bring the art form of step to Bentley University’s campus. It was just four years ago that F.I.R.E intensified its flames with the introduction of a very talented dance team. Since broadening their repertoire, F.I.R.E is hotter than ever. The combination of complex routines, passion, comedy, and strive to bring the heat left Saturday’s audience nothing short of entertained and inspired. It makes Bentley to be recognized internationally.

Dancing trolls, a talking snowman and a girl that can freeze anything with a crazy power in her hand – sound familiar? If not, you clearly have not seen Disney’s latest blockbuster movie, Frozen, which hit theaters late last November. This movie musical has it all: singing, dancing, strong female roles, love, family, friendship and more. The Los Angeles Times reports that Frozen has already grossed over $1 billion, with a release in Japan still to come. The film won a Golden Globe for Best Animated Film and two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. The soundtrack to Frozen is currently No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Remarkably, it is fending off new album debuts by industry stalwarts Foster

the People (No. 3), Skrillex (No. 4) and Enrique Iglesias (No. 8). Not only that, it has charted for 17 weeks, seven of which at the venerable top spot, moving over 1.6 million copies in the process! Frozen has melted our hearts and avid fans are demanding more. Due to the film’s immense franchise potential, Walt Disney CEO and Chairman, Bob Iger, vowed that Disney is not ready to end Frozen’s successful run. Plans for theme park rides and licensed products and merchandise are already in the works. In addition, on January 13, Disney decided to continue the Frozen phenomenon that is sweeping the globe by turning the movie into a Broadway musical! Disney is no stranger to the Broadway stage. The Disney Theatrical Productions Limited Group, also known as Disney on Broadway or Walt Disney Theatrical,

was founded in 1993. The company has produced theatrical blockbusters such as Beauty and the Beast (1994), The Lion King (1997), Tarzan (2006), High School Musical (2007), The Little Mermaid (2008), Mary Poppins (2009), Newsies (2012) and Aladdin (2014). These shows have grown out of their beloved movies and reached audiences of over 10 million people in over 40 countries. Though the fantasy of Frozen may seem a little far-fetched for a Broadway adaptation, Disney’s work to date shows it is up to the task. Walt Disney Theatrical has portrayed an under-sea world, shown an antelope stampede and a lion being pushed from the top of a high cliff and depicted Aladdin flying around on his magic carpet on stages worldwide. With the company’s creative abilities and vast resources, difficult tasks like creating a talking snowman and a castle of ice for Frozen are entirely plausible. Disney does not see its extravagant animation creations as a hurdle for putting a movie onto a Broadway stage. The company sees these challenges as a way to shape the future of Broadway and what people believe can or cannot be done on stage. Frozen on Broadway gives Disney another chance to get it right, Iger says. “We’re not demanding speed. We’re demanding excellence.” Disney’s latest stage endeavor will continue to shape the future of Broadway and the capabilities of a theatrical production.

Reaction to the Walking Dead Season 4 Finale BY MeGAN LIEU

Before beginning the partial recap and explanation of the episode, the first and most important thing to say is this: OH MY GOODNESS! The episode, from start to finish, is completely well done, mind boggling and awe-inspiring. For the whole hour, there is a good chance that any viewer is going to be stuck gaping at the screen with their hands held to their mouth. WARNING: Spoilers ahead, as well as some intense fan opinions and predictions. The finale begins with a flashback to when the group was still in the prison. The episode contains a few flashbacks—all explaining how Hershel was the reason Rick decided to become a farmer. Hershel was able to convince Rick that he needed to step back from going on runs and instead learn the art of agriculture alongside his son Carl. The whole idea was meant to save Rick and Carl’s humanity and as any follower of the show knows, it was successful to an extent. Also in the flashbacks, the “Bethyl” fans (those who want Beth and Daryl to be together) became disappointed when the realization that Beth, played

The big question of the Walking Dead Season 4, answered in the season’s finale. by Emily Kinney, would only be in the flashbacks and not in the present. Unfortunately, the fandom must wait until Season 5 to discover what happens to Beth. Many fans are speculating as to her end possibly being due to cannibalism, which was alluded to towards the end of the finale. The finale proceeds to

enlighten the audience as to the whereabouts and happenings of Rick, Michonne and Carl. They are on the verge of starvation as they make their way to Terminus and stop for the night to eat a small bunny. While Carl is sleeping in a truck, Michonne and Rick sit outside lamenting the fact of their situation: once

again they are on the road, facing walkers without the consolation of a safeguarded haven. This leads us to the first jump scare of the episode when a loud sound occurs and we suddenly see a gun pointed to Rick’s head. The scene pans out to show Daryl’s group of gangsters, minus Daryl, surrounding them with their

weapons ready. Joe, the head gangster, holds his gun to Rick’s temple and laughs that he almost considered stopping for the night. Thankfully, Daryl’s group did not and they were able to find the man who killed their “friend” Lou. At that moment Daryl steps in from the shadows and attempts to stop Joe from killing them. He tries to convince the gang that Rick is a good guy, which only leads to Joe calling Daryl’s statement a lie. And as fans know, the gang’s code of conduct states that if any of them lie, they are beaten to a pulp and then killed. As Daryl gets pulverized by two of the gang members, Joe continues to tell Rick his plans. First they will kill Daryl. Then they will have their fun with Michonne and Carl then kill them. Finally, they will kill Rick. This all happens while Rick pleads for them to stop. In addition, Michonne is being helplessly subdued with a gun to her temple and Carl is practically being molested by a grown, overweight man. For what happens next or any of the previous action, you can access Season 4 on Netflix soon. Alternatively, with a cable provider account, you can watch the finale as well as previous episodes on the AMC website.

This past weekend, Bentley Fashion Consultants presented their annual fashion show, but unlike some of the shows in the past, this year they teamed up with Sigma Gamma Delta to do so. The combination allowed for an awesome dynamic that permitted more pieces to be showcased on the runway, and even more fun to be had with model representation from both organizations. Taking place

on Saturday, March 29th, the show featured a wide variety of designers whose fashions were modeled by both female and male participants. The event itself had a great turnout that drew in friends, students, and family members who were all able to observe the different designer categories being represented. From Southern Proper Ties to Paxton 1345 Loungewear, to even chic feminine looks from Francesca’s and Wild Willow, audience members had the opportunity to

become familiarized with many local and accessible brands that they may not have been familiar with in the past. The models that showcased the fashion designs expressed a lot of enthusiasm about their outfits and did an excellent job of engaging the crowd, contributing to the overall light-hearted spirit of the event. “It was great to see the show come together so well after all of the hard work that we have been putting into it since last semester,” stated Adelaida Camilo, the treasurer of the Bentley Fashion Consultants, and one of the models that was featured in the show. Adelaida is a senior who has been in the show multiple times and she indicated that she was happy to end on this note, as she really enjoyed this experience. Tickets to the show were only $2, and came with three raffle entries that could be put towards a variety of prizes. The tickets were drawn multiple times throughout the show, allowing the audience members ample chances to win. Prizes included a Kate

Spade bag, gift cards to The Skellig, Wilson’s, John Brewer’s and Glow, and even some of the apparel that was seen in the show. “I am definitely going to use this before the Bahamas trip!” exclaimed Thomas Diorio, a senior audience member who won the Glow gift card. The event was a definite success made possible by a lot of hard work from the Fashion Consultants, SGD, as well as hair stylists and make-up artists. There

was immediate positive feedback from the audience members, and even a lot of praise on Facebook and Twitter after the event wrapped up. No matter how much you want to deny it seniors, graduation is fast approaching. And that means another circled date on the calendar is coming up soon as well: the annual trip to the Bahamas. So for the most of the senior class, that means daily trips to the gym to make sure the bod is island party ready. If that wasn’t reminder enough, a few student organizations around campus are organizing 5k walks/runs for good causes not excluding shedding a few pounds from a few soon-to-be alumni before they soak up the sun in Atlantis. On Sunday, April 6, the Sport Event Management Class (MG340) will be partnering with Colleges against Cancer (CAC) to host a 5k run to support cancer research with all proceeds going to Relay for Life. In addition to the actual run, the two organizations will be throwing a festival during and after the race on the Upper Greenspace at the start/finish line in

the “Falcon Festival Zone.” There participants and spectators can enjoy live music, consume edible food, and participate in fun games and contests. The event will begin at 12:30 p.m. and the run will commence at 1:00 p.m. sharp on Upper G. Anyone looking to register for the event can do so by logging onto MyBentley and clicking the “Purchase/Register For Events, Activities, or Programs” link listed under Undergraduate Student Services. But if the schedule for Sunday is looking a bit tight, perhaps Friday might work out better, especially for those seniors who don’t even remember what it’s like to have class on Friday. Tomorrow Alpha Phi and Sig Chi will be co-hosting the “Move Your Phi’t” 5k also to fund cancer research through their respective philanthropic partners. Some students may remember the 1st annual “Move Your Feet” event from last semester as hosted by Alpha Phi which, without the aid of the brothers of Sig Chi, successfully raised over $1900 to benefit the Alpha Phi Foundation. The foundation in turn, actively

contributes money to ongoing research in the field of cardiac care and women’s heart health. This semester, with the addition of the Sigma Chi brothers to the cause, event organizers from both organizations anticipate the run will be an even bigger success with a goal of $3000. Fresh off their Falcon Award win for “Organization of the Year”, the leadership of Sig Chi hopes that lending their name and assistance to the cause will lend publicity to the event and increase attendance. In addition to benefiting Women’s Heart Health, proceeds from the event will be going to the philanthropic partner of the Sigma Chi national organization. Designated as the official philanthropic partner of Sigma Chi in December of 2012, the Huntsman Cancer Institute is dedicated to cancer research and is constantly developing new and better techniques for the treatment of various cancers. Starting at 11 a.m. one of Bentley’s own, junior Matthew Bordeaux, will kick off the event by performing live on the Upper Greenspace where

students can enjoy a variety of activities including face painting, face waxing (courtesy of European Wax Center), facial shave demonstrations (courtesy of GameDay), Pi the President, Pi a Chi, and ring toss. From 12 to 2 p.m. AMP radio will be in attendance for a live DJ set to entertain runners and event attendees. The walk/run itself will have two staggered start times to accommodate those students getting out of Friday class. Students can choose to either start at the first time, 1:30 p.m. or the latter start at 2:30 p.m. Those looking to participate in the event can purchase tickets today outside Seasons from 5-7 p.m. for $10 or $15 for

at the event. For those looking to just participate in activities taking place on the Greenspace, a $5 is suggested. A map of the 5k will be available at the table outside Seasons. The route will be almost entirely on campus, crossing Beaver St. just once, to avoid having to block off any major roads and involve the cooperation of the Waltham Police Department. Sponsors for the event include: Universal Pictures, Monster, 98.5 the Sports Hub, Country 102.5,Moe’s Southwestern Grill, GameDay Men’s Care, Five Guys, Lazy Bones, AMP Radio, Native Water, Wagon Wheel, Glow, European Wax Center, Angelo’s Civita Farnese, John Brewers, and Relay Preview Conclusion.

Random Thoughts

Time Management Wake up at 6:30AM, go to school, get back home at 3:00, eat lunch, nap, watch TV and then do an hour of homework. That was my beautiful little school life. I used to be so bored by the end of the day and so loaded with sleep my night was majorly me just tossing and turning in bed till 12. I’d usually just get up, have a mini-snack, watch a little TV, and then hit the bed at 1AM. A lot of people wish to go back to childhood because it was “some of their best years when they were so innocent and life was unicorns and rainbows.” Me, I’d love to go back to highschool. It was fun, I really enjoyed it, and most of all, I slept well. Nowadays, it’s more like wake up at 7, go to college, finish classes, then its meetings, homework and exams prep.

Don’t get me wrong, I was way more involved back in high school and studies were way harder. In Bentley, it just comes to a point where it becomes annoying and a major pain. As a person who holds 3 executive boards and is involved in another 9 clubs and has a job on campus, life does get a little hectic. Plus, let’s not forget exams and tests. On top of that, keeping up with social life and everything going on around me, it does get a little stressful. The question I get more often than not is, I wish I could be as involved. How do you deal with all this? (Yes I was building up to this point. I had to write a 600 word article in 15 minutes and didn’t know what to BS about. I’m now literally BS-ing about BS-ing. Don’t like it? Sue me.)

The key factor here is enjoyment. If you enjoy organizing things, leadership and planning, it isn’t going to be all that hard. One of the quotes I live by is “If you enjoy what you do, you will never work another day in your life.” This is a statement I cannot express enough. And it’s not just about loving leadership and all of its aspects, but also loving the culture of the organization and how they operate. That is really a key aspect of being involved. The other part of it is basic time management. Again, as a busy person, I cannot express enough how much a calendar can help. Google calendar is what is getting me through college these days. College students (especially freshmen) who think “they don’t have enough time” are liars. Pure liars. You have no

idea how much time you have in a day till you plan your day out. I am that involved, have a decent GPA and social life, and yet still get time to watch 8-10 hours of TV a week. Oh and let’s not forget I get to sleep 15 hours on weekends like a king. The last thing that I just recently started doing was keeping a small book with me of all the arbitrary things that I want to do during the day. They are typically things that will take no more than 5-15 minutes to get done and are just nuisances in the way that you’ll just keep thinking about for the entire day. Putting them in a little book not only gets your mind off those weird little things, but also helps you get things out of the way. Sometimes I also add important things that I need to put into my calendar. It means that ev-

Usama Salim A freshman with an undecided major ery time I open that little book, I am reminded of all the things I need to get done. (Shoutout to CBL here. I learnt this from one of their seminars). I guess what I’m trying to say here is a few quick simple things. If you want to be involved on campus and think you don’t have time to, think again. Plan your days for a week and see how much time you still have to spare. Use the little book and keep it on you all the time. And last but not least, do something because you actually enjoy that something, and aren’t doing just because. Only mothers are allowed to say just because.

THE INTERNATIONAL REPORT

Our Internet users will be connected to the internet by 2030. Facebook and Google are aiming to ensure this great Internet hope materializes. According to Facebook CEO and founder, Mark Zuckerberg, the recently outlined Facebook Connectivity Lab will house engineers that will build and fly drones, satellites and infrared lasers that will beam internet connections down to earth. His goal, in conjunction with Internet. org, a global partnership between major technology firms and non-profit organizations is, “to make affordable access to basic Internet services available to every person in the world.” Not to be outdone, Google’s Project Loon which began with a 2013 pilot test in Canterbury, New Zealand aims to bring internet connectivity to people in

Yes, the internet was disappearing. The first website to disappear was Wikipedia. Education systems across the globe collapsed within minutes. Facebook, Twitter and Youtube were the next websites to go offline permanently. Life’s purpose was immediately lost for approximately a billion people. The death of email put the final nail in the coffin of human communication. Bing was the last website standing: no one noticed. This slightly dramatic scenario is unlikely to happen tomorrow. However, the dramatization does highlight the increasingly central role of the internet to humanity. The proliferation of smartphones, combined with increased incomes in the emerging world, means that up to 2 billion new

rural and remote areas through balloons stationed in the stratosphere. As 14 of the balloons from the 2013 pilot test were lost at sea, the success of the expanded 2014 pilot aim of ‘establishing a ring of uninterrupted connectivity around the 40th southern parallel(the circle of latitude 40 degrees south of the equator) is by no means definite. Last week, Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies approved The Marco Civil da Internet. Widely described as the world’s first Internet Bill of Rights and Brazil’s Internet Constitution, the bill is expected to easily pass through the Senate and become law. It lays out the rights of Brazilian Internet users and the principles that companies, which deal with Brazilian internet users, must abide by. The bill’s provisions regarding net neutrality, freedom of expression and online privacy have been heralded by many including Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web. In the pipeline for quite some time, the gumption necessary to get the Marco Civil da Internet to a vote was triggered by revelations that the NSA had been systematically tapping Brazil’s telecommunications network, allowing for the collection of millions of email and telephone records. The NSA’s eavesdropping on state oil firm Petrobras, Brazilian embassies and President Dilma Rousseff’s

own telephone finally motivated lawmakers to get the bill to the lower house of Congress. The bill’s strong support of net neutrality will prevent Brazilian internet providers charging Internet users higher prices for different content like video streaming or online gaming. To speed up the bill’s progress, the Brazilian government gave up a local storage provision which would have forced companies to store their data on Brazilian servers. The local storage provision was opposed by businesses, which believed costs created would be too prohibitive. The extraterritorial implications of Article 11 of the bill state that companies that provide internet services to Brazilian users are subject to Brazilian law, no matter where they are located, will no doubt cause consternation to companies and governments across the globe. The global implications of Internet rules and regulations were central to the 49th meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN is the organization which keeps the Internet operating smoothly and securely. In last week’s meeting, ICANN president, Fadi Chehadé, proclaimed, “ICANN49 will be remembered as a meeting that, in many ways, ended the early phase of ICANN and brought the organization into a new

KEVIN D. LARYEA

phase of maturity and responsibility.” This new phase is necessitated by the U.S. government’s plan to relinquish its oversight control of ICANN by September 2015. Currently, The Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) contractually oversee the operations of ICANN; however, the NTIA rarely directly involves itself in the organization’s activities and decision-making. Before handing over oversight control, The U.S. has stated a multi stakeholder system should be in place. Indeed, it refuses to relinquish control to a governmental or intergovernmental body and has described the September 2015 ‘handover’ date as adjustable. Some critics of the Obama administration’s relinquishment decision say unless the new overseer is organized, effective, transparent and totally committed to a free and open internet, the internet as we know it will disappear. In its place will appear a fragmented internet where each country has its own Internet rules and operational mechanisms and the internet’s freedom and interconnectivity is lost forever.

CONTEMPLATING MACRO

Misplaced Frustration in Monetary Movements It was the common belief that monetary policy was left to cranky academics who sometimes made their models purposefully difficult to understand. However, things have changed. A lot of this has to do with the various political movements in the 2008 and 2012 elections. While more people interested in monetary policy is great the issue is there is a large portion of this new audience that has misplaced frustration. They are too afraid of inflation, always predicting asset bubbles and dislike fractional reserve banking or always wanting to restrict commerce. The inflation issue is very simple. There has been little inflation since 2008. After the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy there has been a more deflation than inflation. The temperament of the new monetary crowd is to criticize central bankers because the do not understand the complexity of markets. This is absolutely true, however then they go to judge all monetary

growth as inflationary. While generally the quantity theory holds true one can’t constrict it so much. The demand for money is a crucial aspect and for some individuals to ignore it is wrong. Ignoring demand ignores the ability for money in an easing to raise prices. Yes, in the long-term if the Federal Reserve were to print a large amount of money, past its previous growth period then inflation could occur. But the assumptions that some of the hard money crowd assumes about money itself is extremely short sighted. While their claim that central bankers ignore the complexity of markets, I believe that they act the exact same way in ignoring the complexity of monetary theory. It seems since the financial crisis the amount of asset bubble predictions has increased. Most of this is likely due to link between the housing bubble and the recession. The many talk show hosts and gold bugs with blogs that may or may not have seen

the housing bubble come have now began calling out the next bubble. Every time an index goes up the United States is for some reason at risk of an inflationary recession. Easy money can cause inflation, and in some cases can cause recession and mal investment (maybe). However assuming that all economic downturns can be explained by one extremely simplified model is inaccurate. The same individuals who believe that the entire current recession was caused solely by the housing crisis also believe that the Great Depression was caused by easy money. I blame such ideas on Murray Rothbard, who reasoned that a 2% monetary growth in the early twenties caused depression. This is of course hardly what occurred; in fact deflation is responsible for much of the depression. Why do these individuals reason from only interest rates or monetary growth, most likely because of their ignorance of economic methodology. Murray Rothbard for example

thought that using aggregate demand and supply models was borderline stupidity. For him every thing could be reasoned through a little thing called Praxeology. Basically, all economic analysis can be accomplished through deductive reasoning. The issue with such a process is that in many respects it makes wide ranging assumptions about economic activities. The assumptions are absolute and while they claim to be understanding of human behavior unlike traditional aggregates they are really no different, maybe worse. These new ideas in monetary policy are not as new as some would like to think of them. It’s mostly the rebirth of hard money economics, almost as bad as the loose money economics of the 70s. However, the issue is that there are various other schools that are the complete opposite, suggesting the inflation causes unemployment to go down. It seems that some inaccurately believe they understand the intrica-

AL-MAHDI EBSIM A freshman majoring in Economics Finance cies of the market and others believe such complexities do not exist. The misplaced frustrations of various thinkers to believe that under a hard money system that recessions can be avoided is inaccurate. History tells a different story. In the end one has to understand that with monetary policy the same rules of complexity apply. One can’t assume that all money printed is inflationary; there are way too many factors for some shock jock to tell you to buy gold before 2010, 2012 or 2026…. There are people who understand theory and there are people who understand rhetoric, the lack of economic progress is not the fault of macroeconomics but rather the fault of the public’s political rhetoric and loud pundits.

A NICKEL FOR MY THOUGHTS

Upcoming Technologies most promising virtual reality device is the Oculus Rift, which is a black headset that displays video in 3D to the wearer. At first glance, the device seems clunky, but something about it motivated Mark Zuckerberg the founder and CEO of Facebook to acquire it for Facebook at a price of $2 billion. What motivated Zuckerberg, perhaps, is the fact that nearly all reviewers who has tried out the Oculus Rift has described it as being one of the most incredible things that they have ever experienced. The Oculus Rift will be available for use with home computers to watch movies and play video games in 3D, but it may also be used for virtual education and it is possible that they will license the technology for use by companies such as Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft for use on their consoles.

Driverless cars are no longer a pipe dream or a flight of technological fantasy. Instead, they are an eventuality and Google is one of the company’s turning the eventuality into a modern reality. In California, Google obtained permission to test its driverless car, a type of modified Prius. Google has now logged hundreds of thousands of miles of successful autonomous driving and the only incidents that have occurred have been caused by other drivers. The technology isn’t commercially available yet but they have already made it safer than with regular drivers. Then again, it’s pretty easy to imagine why a computer would be better at driving cars than a person. A computer doesn’t need sleep, nor do they get drunk or high. Computers can be attached to cameras and sensors all around

the car to monitor all other vehicles on the road. GM, Toyota, Ford, Tesla and Google are all working on developing technologies for autonomous cars and four states already have legislature allowing testing on these new vehicles. Space tourism is now a thing, as are giant rockets. SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, is an American company which is producing the world’s most powerful and efficient rockets. One of the rockets it produced is called the Falcon Heavy and is the largest rocket ever produced. It has enough range to reach Mars and will actually be used in missions to bring equipment or even astronauts to the red planet. Virgin Galactic, owned by the billionaire Richard Branson, will be bringing regular people into space (regular as in not astronauts). For two hundred

New technologies are developed constantly. As you read this article, tens of thousands of scientists and engineers are working to produce the technologies of the future. Some may work for corporations, others for universities, government or are even be self-employed. Some of these men and women, perhaps most, are geniuses and the things that they have created, are creating and will create will shock and awe you. I’m here to tell you about some of them. One of the most promising emerging technologies is wireless electricity. You read that correctly. Multiple companies have all successfully tested wireless electricity and it has been used to charge laptops and cell phones and even to power televisions. The primary method for providing wireless electricity is generating a magnetic field. There is no risk of being zapped, however. The waves are the same as those used in Wi-Fi and devices of the future could be designed to automatically charge from wireless electricity. In the future, your phone might charge in your pocket from free wireless electricity as you walk through a mall. Virtual reality is another hot topic in the world of technology. Virtual reality is the usage of technology to create immersive experiences for video games, movies or even education. The idea is to make an experience that is so realistic that it emulates reality, ergo virtual reality. The

and fifty thousand dollars, one will be able to claim to have been in space. The company uses advanced space ships, entirely custom built and plans on taking the first customers into space to experience zero gravity later this year. Truly, we live in an age of technological wonder. Wireless electricity, what could be considered magic to an unknowing mind, has already been proven to work. Extremely advanced virtual reality systems have been created and games and other media to use with those systems have been created as well, though more is to come. The acceptance of driverless cars is trickling into our society and the technologically behind them has been successfully demonstrated by Google. Private companies are creating the worlds best rockets, instead of NASA and soon people will be able to go to space for hundreds of thousands, instead of what used to cost dozens if not hundreds of millions. More technology will come out in the next years, let alone innovation in decades and centuries that neither you nor I can even comprehend. Regardless of our mental preparedness, technology is coming.

Markets Rally on Yellen’s Negative Economic Outlook Business Editor

If you’ve been following the equity markets in any way recently, you know that they have been doing incredibly well – record highs are being set left and right, and the initial negative correction we saw earlier in the first quarter from the bull equity market last year has already subsided. On Monday in Chicago, new Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen offered further news that sent the markets up once more. Her news that the Fed intends to keep interest rates low for the current foreseeable future was not unexpected however. It is no secret that Yellen leans towards the doveish side in terms of economic policy, so many have expected her to continue with Bernanke’s policies towards handling the economy and her words on Monday further reinforced those thoughts. Though her actions towards the economy did not come as a surprise, the way in which she delivered her remarks, in an uncharacteristically personal manner relative to other central bankers, surprised many. According to the Wall Street Journal’s Pedro Da Costa and Jon Hilsenrath, “central bankers tend to

speak in terms of economic theory and statistics, in jargon better understood by investors and other economists than the broader public.” Instead, however, Yellen laced her economic commentary with personal and anecdotal stories and experiences of three individuals who have been struggling to find work amidst the currently weak job market. Yellen also emphasized, as the Fed has always done so, the importance of the realization that the tapering of the

Federal Reserve’s bond buying program is not a withdrawal of support to the economy, but rather simply adding support at a slower pace to evidence the economic recovery. Her comments on Monday spurred a rally in the equity markets of 0.8 percent in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500. Interestingly enough, it still seems like bad news about the economy is still ‘good news’ for the markets, because it tells investors that the Fed will continue to step in and provide strong

support to fuel economic growth. However what happens when the economy is finally strong enough to stand on its two legs again, all by itself? It is a question we have not had to contend with since prior to the economic crisis circa 2007 and 2008, and many anticipate that in this scenario, good news for the economy will mean bad news for a market because it has effectively had its training wheels on for too long. After her speech in Chi-

Yellen’s speeches have led to equity markets hitting all time highs.

cago, she toured the Richard J. Daley College in the city, and spoke with students and faculty. Rasheed Shannon, a student at the school, noted that, “I thought [Yellen] was going to be someone that was uptight but she seems so approachable.” As aforementioned, this is an interesting paradigm shift from the past Federal Reserve chairs, with their enigmatic auras and secrecy. Perhaps it is to bring more transparency and reliability to the Fed, which has often been criticized of being too tight lipped and operating on their own secret agenda. This may be the result of James Tobin, her mentor during her Ph.D. studies at Yale University, who instilled in her the invaluable qualities of looking beyond statistics, numbers, and indicators in her work to also note the effect her decisions and policy changes will have on the Average Joe. For now, the markets are still looking upbeat, and our new Federal Reserve Chairwoman looks like she is well prepared to handle her new role, as well as give a new, gentler face to the Fed. The future, however, is still uncertain, and darker times may be on the horizon as the Fed finally beings to round-up its bond-buying program.

Coming into the season, the Bentley men’s lacrosse team was ranked number six in the Northeast-10 Men’s Lacrosse Preseason Poll. The team is expected to have a strong season, led by senior captains Tim Cobb and Bill Sweeney along with junior captain T.A. Demoulas. According to sophomore Nick Wells, “When we started off the season, coach Murphy said we were going to win a national championship.” This came as a surprise to many of the players in reaction to their disappointing season last year. Early this season, the team had a tough start with losses against New York Tech and Le Moyne, but their past few games have gone well with two wins against Pace and Saint Anselm. Hot off their first winning streak of the season, the team has faith and determination to make it to the championship and win it all. In the first few games, the team struggled to blend their strengths and weaknesses towards success, but as Wells pointed out, “Once the team started clicking, we were unbeatable.” Sophomore offensive midfielder Brady Palmer

Matt Birgham led the offensive charge against Pace. agreed, saying, “Since the fall we have been optimistic about the spring because we knew many of the new players would be able to contribute right away.” Included in those new players Palmer mentioned are Freshman John Wheeler and junior transfer Cutler Dimond, who paired well with returning sophomore Matt Brigham to make a promising offense. Freshman David Phelps has also made a great addition to the team as an offensive threat. This past Saturday, Bentley won against Pace with large contributions from Brigham and Dimond.

“The 12-6 final score in the game against Pace is good measurement of our teams capabilities for this seasons in comparison to last year’s loss to the same team,” said Palmer. In terms of goals, the team is aiming, “to prove to everyone that they are not a team to be overlooked, but rather a team to be feared,” said Wells. Together, the team is hoping to dominate the field and bring their team all the way to the championship. The team will be looking for the Falcon faithful to come out and show support at their next home game on April 9 at 7:00 pm against Merrimack.

This next weekend the three most dominant teams in the country, with one surprise, will compete in college hockey’s most paramount weekend; the Frozen Four. Minnesota, Boston College, Union, and underdog North Dakota will compete for the national title. As college hockey fans from teams not in the Frozen Four watch, they can only wonder why their team is not among the frozen four and if their squad will ever rise to the level of champions. For our Division 1 Falcons, the thought of a Frozen Four appearance has never really been a conceivable one, while few teams within the conference have had a fighting chance at it (Niagara last year and RIT who made it there a few years back). The Bentley hockey team has been trying to gain prominence in their conference first. So, if you look at the journey of ascension to national prominence and legitimacy, as a series of stepping stones, Bentley has achieved the first one; gain acknowledgement nationally. Obviously the Falcons are by no means a household name in college hockey, but they did their best Hockey East impression hanging in with the big dogs of the country (BU, Nebraska-Omaha, etc.) and outplaying most in their own

Next year Brett Gensler will be playing for the Stingrays. conference. The next step for the Falcon’s will be a conference championship hopefully paired with a conference tournament championship, which gives an automatic berth to the big dance. Both of these things very well could have happened this year, but the Falcon’s faded at the end while still having a legitimate chance to advance until their final seconds. For the ‘14-‘15 season, Bentley loses their all-time leading scorer and their winningest goaltender. Yet they bring back two of the top scorers in the nation, the second leading assist man (among

these two Hobey Baker nominees) and a total of four all-conference players on the squad. The losses of seniors forward Brett Gensler and goaltender Branden Komm will certainly hurt, but the goal of a conference championship is a very, very realistic one and something the team can rally around to attain. With the buzz generated for the program this year, expectations will be higher than ever and we will see if our rising Falcons can back it up. I for one will take anybody’s money that doesn’t think the Falcon’s won’t take the Atlantic Hockey Crown.

Five for the Fight, the result of class discussion and sports

Bentley prides itself on offering students with countless opportunities to gain real-world experiences in the classroom. One class in which students certainly find this to be true is MG 340 Sports Management, a management elective offered to upperclassmen. The course is an experiential leaning course in event management in which students can plan and produce actual sports events! Professors who teach this class hope that their students will gain leadership and management skills throughout this course. Senior Sydney Spiegel, who is currently enrolled in the course, said that she has really enjoyed the class. Spiegel said, “It’s been a very interesting course so far this semester. We’ve learned everything about how to put on an event – every step of the process.” The project includes many aspects of sport event management, including budgeting, marketing, sponsorship, hospitality, site design, volunteer

and staff management, media and public relations, registration and operations. As Spiegel confirmed, “this class is very hands on…we learn a lot through course lectures and discussions and then actually putting it into action ourselves. The class is separated in to three groups: Marketing/Registration, Operations and Budgeting/Sponsorship.” As a member of the marketing team, she explained, “Our focus is to get the word out about our event, create a lot of buzz and attention for the event and what will be going on so that people will want to participate. We are using flyers around campus, a banner in the student center, announcements at the basketball games, social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram where we have tried to generate a lot of publicity to current Bentley undergrads-our target market) and word of mouth.” Spiegel also commented on the other committees as well. “The budget committee had the responsibility to keep track of all of our expenses that are in-

With the women’s basketball team taking home the NCAA Division II Championship, Bentley has now won their second Division II National championship, with the other coming in field hockey in 2001. From 1996 to 2002, the field hockey program won seven straight Northeast-10 championships and made it to the National Championship in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Finally, in 2001, the team was able to get over the hump with a 4-2 victory over East Stroudsburg. In addition, the program also reached the National Championship game in 1981 (the first ever national championship game), 2002, 2004, 2006 but were unsuccessful in each.

curred through the entire event and its preparation as well. They also had to focus a lot on getting companies to sponsor us.” This year, the class is collaborating with CAC, SAAC, the Women’s Volleyball team, Circle K, the Green Society, Healthy Hearts Association, RHA and some Greek Life organizations. “Meanwhile, the operations team was in charge of logistics. They secured the location of the event, they had to create a site design for the green space (i.e. how to organize all of the games and all of the tables for the American cancer society and the campus organizations who are partnering or participating),” said Spiegel commenting on the importance of each of these three groups communicating with the other groups. Throughout the semester, a typical class period includes a discussion of the different aspects of each group from the course reading. The class learns about what each group is responsible for and makes plans about how they should do it. Each class period, the

students host a staff meeting in which they discuss the project. After going over their progress, including any concerns or issues they might have and talking about new ideas, they make plans for each group and set goals for their next meeting. Another exciting part of the course is the visitation of guest speakers who currently work within the sports event management industry. This semester, a speaker who is in charge of managing the Bay State Games and who has had experience working on the Boston Marathon came to Bentley to share with the class his experiences working in the industry. Another speaker from Regan Communications came to Bentley to share the importance of social media when promoting a sporting event. This gives the student the opportunity to hear real life sports management success stories in the classroom. Not only that, but they have the chance to implement all that they learn and product their own event at the end of the semester for their final project.

After a semester’s worth of research and planning, the students this semester are excited to announce their final project, an event called “5 For the Fight.” Their event is a 5K race and festival to be hosted on the Bentley campus April 6. The class has decided to partner with the student-led organization on campus, Colleges against Cancer, who hosts the event “Relay for Life” every year. This year, the 5K will kick off the Relay for Life events. The 5K and festival will begin at 1pm. There will be music and picnic games for all to enjoy. Other organizations on campus will also be taking part in the festival with their own tables, hosting games or volunteering. In the final days leading up the event, the class is working on the final touches of preparation for this exciting day. This class and all of the sponsors they’ve secured, along with their many partners on campus, are all looking forward to the success that this event is bound to be and hopefully, to raise money for a very noble cause.
