Defining the Future

of Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship

An Academic Center for the Innovation Age

At Bentley, the business theory and principles learned in the classroom hold great value — they’re the foundation upon which careers are built. But to excel in this new Innovation Age, students will need to master durable skills like critical thinking, resilience, effective communication and solutions-based problem solving. Bentley faculty help hone and develop these skills by empowering students, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and hands-on training to ignite positive, lasting change at the intersection of business and technology. This demands that Bentley’s education continually evolves, and so too must our learning spaces. Plans are underway to completely reimagine Bentley’s Adamian Academic Center as a hub of technology, innovation and entrepreneurship. In addition to enhanced work areas designed to help faculty collaborate easily with colleagues in other disciplines, the new center will feature immersive virtual reality (VR) technology, a Futures Lab for artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics and visualization, and other innovative spaces that prepare students to lead and thrive in the 21st-century marketplace.

Bentley Partners with City of Waltham to Establish Social Innovation Incubator

A first-of-its-kind partnership between Bentley and its home city, Waltham, launched this winter: The Bentley Social Innovation Incubator, an accelerator program, is designed to support social entrepreneurs in the city who aim to use the power of business to benefit society. The incubator was established with the support of a $625,000 grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration championed by Massachusetts senators Edward Markey and Elizabeth Warren. In its first year, the program will provide hands-on guidance and support to five aspiring social entrepreneurs, helping them develop, pitch and raise funds for their ventures. Bentley faculty, staff, alumni and students along with local and national experts will help the entrepreneurs to create business plans and implement branding and marketing strategies.

New STEM MBA Prepares the Next Generation of Business Leaders

Bentley’s new STEM MBA program equips future business leaders with the skills to excel in today’s data- and technology-driven environment. Through a blend of theoretical foundations and hands-on experiences, students learn to harness the power of technology, leverage data analytics and make informed decisions that help organizations succeed. Tracks include Accounting Analytics, Business Analytics, Financial Analytics and Information Systems and Technology.

AI and Ethics

Marco Marabelli, PhD, professor of Computer Information Systems and associate director of Bentley’s Hoffman Center for Business Ethics, has published a new book that looks at the use of data and AI and the resulting ethical implications. AI, Ethics, and Discrimination in Business advocates for the ethical design and responsible implementation and deployment of technology in organizations and society.

On Track to Be First Fair Trade-Certified U.S. Business University

Bentley is on track to be the first business university in the country to become a certified Fair Trade University. Students from the Bentley Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Center made a pitch for the university to pursue the certification by including the necessary ethical and sustainable practices in the curriculum and in procurement and research efforts. “The prospect of studying at a business school that helps us develop into leaders of ethical businesses, while instilling in us the knowledge and skills to do so, is what makes Bentley special,” Luke Andris ’25, Caroline Bushnell ’25, Cassie Dubitsky ’24 and Trevor Hodgson ’25 said in their proposal. The designation is the result of years of behind-the-scenes work by students, alumni, faculty and staff, including on-campus initiatives such as the Fair Trade Fair (pictured here), now in its 10th year and the second largest in the country, according to Fair Trade Certified. “In the U.S., Bentley stands to become the very first business school to earn this designation and become a Fair Trade University — and that’s particularly exciting for us as the fair trade model is one focused on demonstrating that business can and must be a force for good,” Billy Linstead Goldsmith, senior director of Fair Trade Campaigns, says.

Professor Pushes for Price Transparency in Health Care

Through his research and teaching, Assistant Professor of Economics Benjamin Chartock, PhD, is working to ensure that U.S. health care consumers enjoy the benefits of a highly innovative health system while minimizing the obstacles related to paying for care. The work has earned him $250,000 from Patient Rights Advocate to support his research. “In nearly every other sector of our economy, consumers can compare the price and quality of goods and services prior to making a purchase,” Chartock says. “But health care costs are both high and highly variable, and there is not enough competition dampening these prices.”

In addition to teaching undergraduate courses in Intermediate Microeconomics and Health Economics, Chartock designed a graduate course in Microeconomic Foundations of Health Care that he teaches as part of a customized MBA program that Bentley developed for Beth Israel Lahey Health. And last fall, Chartock — an affiliate of Bentley’s Center for Health and Business, which brings together students, faculty, alumni, and corporate and community partners to develop solutions for health industry challenges — led 250 first-year students in a discussion about health care price transparency.

Preparing Students for Careers of Impact

Bentley’s award-winning, nationally recognized Pulsifer Career Development Center supports students, faculty, staff and alumni in blazing rewarding career paths. Ninety-nine percent of graduates of the Class of 2024 are employed, or attending or planning to attend graduate school within six months of graduation. And graduates report an impressive $72,000 median starting salary. More than 95% of students connect with the center during their first year on campus when they take a career design seminar in which they identify personal strengths and talents, explore how those can impact career paths, and create career tools such as a resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile and elevator pitch. Bentley also offers career design seminars for sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Advancing Leadership

As executive director of Bentley’s Gloria Cordes Larson Center for Women and Business (CWB), Yaro Fong-Olivares, PsyD, leads the center’s work to drive innovation in the business world and leverage industry expertise alongside academia to meet the needs of early career professionals, front-line managers, and senior executives including the C-suite and boardroom. The CWB provides thought leadership and offers tools and trainings to foster inclusive organizations through data-backed research and professional development. Through programs and strategic partnerships, the center cultivates and creates thriving communities and empowers students, alumni and business leaders to drive meaningful and transformative change. “Bentley is committed to amplifying the power of women and their allies to drive equity and innovation in the business world,” Fong-Olivares says.

This year’s conference, Pathways to Power: Reimagining Gender and Leadership, is focused on empowering attendees to navigate barriers in career advancement.

This course encouraged and empowered me to advocate for myself professionally, and it definitely paid off.

Faculty Spotlight: Marcus Stewart, PhD

Do consumers attribute racial stereotypes to chatbots when they shop online? If so, how does that affect their satisfaction with that shopping experience? This was the topic of a recent paper co-authored in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research by Marcus Stewart, PhD, professor and chair of Management. His courses at the university and as part of the teaching team in Bentley’s new Professional MBA program focus on leadership, organizational behavior, human resource management, organizational change, diversity and teams.

This new MBA program equips leaders to navigate an increasingly complex and uncertain world by integrating economic, social, environmental and technological perspectives. By redesigning what, how, where and from whom students learn, it prepares them to lead effectively and sustainably in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

Brad Stevens, president of basketball operations at the Boston Celtics, shares his experience and insights about the business of sports during a talk in Bentley’s Koumantzelis Auditorium.

Growth mindset is more than just about growing your technical capabilities. It’s growing your digital capabilities, your interpersonal capabilities, your relationships, your knowledge about a diverse world that still is highly reliant upon connections between economies.

When you look at economic diversification, historically the Saudi economy relied heavily on one source. Now we have put a lot of emphasis to diversify the economy toward non-oil activities.

We need technologies that show value for human life, dignity and rights. We need to build systems that are more transparent. We need to address harmful bias and commit these ethical practices into business.

Partnership with Celtics Highlights College and Career Paths for Local Teens

As part of the second annual Celtics Career Day presented by Bentley University, 35 Boston-area high school students visited Celtics headquarters to learn about off-the-court career opportunities in professional sports from front-office staff and hear about the college admission process from Bentley representatives. The program, which involved collaboration with Boston Public Schools and the 7uice Foundation, reflects a central goal of a multiyear Bentley-Celtics partnership: offering educational and growth opportunities to students from underrepresented communities. Later in the day, the group headed to TD Garden for a tour before watching a game.

Bentley’s partnership with the Celtics makes me feel proud and gives us a chance to learn about the business side of sports. Through this partnership, students get access to experiences that help them grow and explore different career paths. Visiting the Celtics headquarters and seeing how things operate in real life made the learning experience even more valuable.
