RESEARCH WORK

Children’s Consumption and Perceptions of Ghanaian Folktales in the Media
Children love folktales for their entertainment and lessons, with little regard for their origins. Globalization and technology have flooded the market with folktales from various cultures, creating competition for young audiences. Folktales also convey cultural values and foster identity, but in Africa, they are threatened by foreign media, urbanization, and fewer traditional storytellers. In Ghana, media proliferation offers a preservation opportunity. This study surveyed students from Grade 5 to Junior High in Accra, revealing their primary sources for Ghanaian folktales and their opinions on these media adaptations.
This research uncovers an intriguing dichotomy: as traditional storytelling dwindles, can modern media step up to keep Ghanaian folktales alive and relevant for the next generation?
