Since March, our gatherings together have been drastically altered. We’ve had to pivot from inperson gatherings to virtual gatherings.

Everything has been turned upside down.

Two things that have not changed is that God has been faithfully journeying with us in this and, as we gather together –– even across digital lines –– God is with us.

Pastor’s Paragraphs Transformation

I

can almost smell it now: the crisp smoky smell of fall. Multi-colored leaves crunching with each step, a cool breeze biting through a light jacket, pumpkins and haybells decorating porches.

I love this season of the year. It’s not too hot, not too cold either. There’s a beauty that even spring does not touch as things begin their transformation from the green of summer to the bleak chill of winter.

Transformation happens right in front of us in the fall season. It’s slow and intentional.

In his letter to the church at Rome, Paul challenges them to not “conform to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—God’s good, pleasing and perfect will.”

At the core of much of Paul’s writings, and Jesus’ teachings, is this idea of transformation. For Jesus, following his teaching toward changing the world would

require more than just praying a prayer and sitting in a pew. To follow Jesus is to give up patterns of the world: violence, hatred, division, oppression, marginalization … the list could fill multiple columns.

For Jesus, and those that would come to follow him, constant change is always required. Much like the leaves that slowly turn from one color to another, the followers of Christ are called to not look the same as they follow Jesus. To meet the teacher who stepped across the religious, ideological, theological, and political divisions of his day is to constantly transform our lives in order to love deeply, extend grace freely, welcome all to the table, fight for justice, and serve always.

Those of us who follow that teacher should never be the same and, more than even that, those we encounter should not be the same. We are called to daily renew how we see the world and how we interact with those around us. To be transformed by the renewing of our minds is to see the light of God in each and every person. It is to constantly leave our comfort zone to serve all.

Transformation is not just something we do one time –– it is a life-long journey.

May we be transformed.

Bernard would die the next week. I think of him often and how he was one of God’s divine appointments for me. Week after week I had a front row seat to the radical transformation that God’s love can have on one life. I thought of all of the spiritual children that Bernard had given birth to because all he wanted to do was spend every minute with Jesus. I will forever be grateful to God for Bernard’s transforming witness.

Lunch on the Lawn

B

ack in the summer of 2014, I was searching for a new church home. A friend told me about Lunch on the Lawn, a partnership between Johnston County Public Schools and Benson Baptist Church to feed the hungry in our community.

They were wanting some teachers to provide a face of familiarity to to the students who came for food, fellowship, and fun.

This is how I came to Benson Baptist Church 6 years ago. I eventually joined the church 2 years later. Over the summers, since 2014, I assisted with and in the summer of 2018 directed Lunch on the Lawn as part of my Supervised Ministry Class at Campbell Divinity School.

Fast forward to 2020, in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, how or would Lunch on the Lawn happen? Thanks to the support of the staff, deacons and members of Benson Baptist Church, Lunch on the Lawn did happen this summer.It just looked and felt a little different. For those who had transportation, they drove through, picked up kid meals (prepared by the JCPS child nutrition department) adult meals (prepared

by Benson Baptist Church volunteers) and crafts. For those who did not have transportation, we delivered. I can truly say that this was the most unique Lunch on the Lawn experience ever.

ello, Church Family!

It warms my heart to address you as “Church Family,” for that is what we are. All of us had an original family...two or three or four or more! (I had 3 brothers, so we were 6!) At the present time we have our Benson Baptist Church Family, and yes: that warms my heart.

As I write this, we are in mid-August, and that means September is just around the corner. I've always loved that month because in our immediate family it is a month of six birthdays, but September is more than just our family celebrations, as important as they are.

September of 2020 means continuing to get used to a new school year even if by Internet, feeling the coolness as Fall makes its debut, looking forward to Thanksgiving (which arrives quickly!), choosing among three track options to attend on Wednesday evenings in our Spiritual Formation Courses, even buying new clothes as young parents are surprised at how much their children have grown when they try on last spring's school clothes! To the mall they go....

In our Friends Bible class, we often learn a new word from Greek or Hebrew, and I jokingly tell Dottie to add it to her list of new words she is supposedly making. Today I want to share an Indian word with you. It is bavith, and one meaning of the word is “refuge.” The psalmist called God his “bavith,” as David cried out in Psalm 142:5: “Thou art my refuge....”

In Fred Wight's book Manners and Customs of Bible Lands he writes: Because the Palestinians lived out-of-doors so much, the sacred writers were fond of referring to God as a “shelter” or as a “refuge” rather than as a “home.” Such expressions in connection with Deity are numerous in the book of Psalms and also in the prophetic writings (for examples, Psa. 61:3 and Isa. 4:6).

And isn't God our refuge, a “very present help in trouble”? The first verse of Psalm 46 tells us this is true as it says “God is our refuge and strength.” We need a bavith once in a while. Life is exciting and filled with wonder at times: however, life also is a challenge and tires us out once in a while! That's the time we need our bavith, and as September fills our days with much wonder and awe and things to say and things to do, let's remember to STOP: stop and spend a few moments in our bavith. That is the time we will fill our cup to awesome overflowing as we realize that as we walk through these busy days of September splendor, God is walking with us and will give us both the refuge and the strength that we need. (So, Dottie, add that Indian word “bavith” to your list).

Stories From My Heart

I

was walking down this dirt road. As I go closer I saw these gates. They were beautiful. The streets

were made of gold. The walls were made of jasper. I asked God, “Can you let me in so I can walk the pearly gates of Heaven?” God said, “No, I can’t let you in. But when a person dies, I will open the

gates and you can go into the pearly gates of Heaven.” I asked God, “What is Heaven like?” God said, “There is no place like it. There are no shootings. It is a peaceful place. There is no more sorrow and no more tears. There is just love and peace.”

I was reading the Scripture from Revelation 21:21 “The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.” It proves one thing: you can be here today and gone tomorrow. You don’t want to miss opportunities to spend time with people you love. I don’t want to be around drama, conflict, or stress. I want to be around happy people. I want to have happy times and a happy life.

If you live a happy life and put God first, God will lead you to the pearly gates of Heaven when that time comes. I am glad that I talked to God about the pearly gates of Heaven.

We are thankful for their willingness to step-up into this role while the Youth and Children’s Committee continues our search for our next Minister of Youth and Children. Fall Spiritual Formation If it was a “normal” September we were entering we would be preparing for the launch of our Wednesday night programming once again with a meal, Bible study, children’s programing, and choir. With the continued realities of COVID-19, and not everyone feeling fully safe about coming back into our building, we’re pivoting a bit at Benson Baptist!

Beginning September 7, we’ll be starting our new Spiritual Formation tracks with TWO options for exploring faith and having fun while you do it! Join us live in-person or online, OR watch the classes later on demand!

Semester Two (with new track options!) will begin October 19.

Rediscovering Our History

I

n the summer of 1891, a violent windstorm came through the growing town of Benson, destroying the small sanctuary of Benson Baptist Church, erected 1887-1888.

News of the building’s disaster came to the attention of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, which donated to the church a lot located at the corner of West Church and North Wall Streets.

Construction immediately began on a second sanctuary building. In 1914, this wood-framed building was relocated further down Church Street to make way for new brick building on the same lot, the one which still stands. The 1891 building now serves as a residence.

As I did not arrive at Benson until Saturday evening, I did not hear the sermon by Bro. W.B. Oliver of Fayetteville, but it was pronounced by those who heard it as being able and impressive, showing in strong terms from Isaiah and others the strength of the church of the living God. At night Brother M.W. Page preached a good, practical sermon to a good congregation.

In spite of the rapidly falling snow, a good congregation assembled in the new and attractive house at Benson to take part in the dedication.

A number of visiting ministers were present, brethren Allen Betts, M.W. Page, A.N. Campbell, J.A. Campbell, E.B. Johnson, and the writer, besides the pastor, Rev. J.M. Holleman. The music, under the management of Miss Nolie Benson, was good.

The dedication sermon was preached by Rev. J.H. Edwards, after which was given the interesting history of this enterprise.

About six months ago the former house of worship was blown down and broken to pieces by a violent storm. The brethren here had just finished paying a debt of three hundred dollars on it, and were planning to complete it. With heroic faith the pastor and his flock set about restoring the waste places of Zion. A citizen of Benson, who is not a member of any church, was the first to propose that he would be one of ten men to rebuild and pay his proportion of the cost. The ten men offered themselves three of them not professing Christians, and two others members of other denominations. The pastor labored faithfully gathering the money, and when the committee held their final meeting the other day, they divided the deficit among themselves and paid it. So the new building was dedicated without a cent of debt upon it, and without the necessity of taking a collection for it on the day of dedication.

The R.R. Company gave them an eligible lot in the heart of town. The new church is a thing of beauty; painted white outside, with arched door and windows, and neat steeple containing a good bell. Within, the pews and high wainscoting are native pine, oiled and varnished; the walls plastered; beaded ceiling, painted pearl gray; door, window-facings and pulpit grained oak. The house has a seating capacity of 250, and is thoroughly warmed by a stove.

All honor to the pastor and his faithful people and to this community, for rearing this tasteful church and paying for it in six months. The cost was just $700. It is the first house of worship in this thriving young town, and is another monument of the enterprise and efficiency of our State Mission Board and our tireless Secretary. It shows, too, what can be done by the right man in the right place as pastor.

They have a flourishing Sunday school, also, of forty or fifty members, whose bright young faces were to be seen there yesterday afternoon. Yes, and now they are going to make a Christmas offering to help to send out the two new missionaries to the North China Mission.

When people get in the way of working, it is easy to keep on.

Happenings The Youth and Children’s Committee, with a representative of the Personnel Committee and our pastor, will serve as the search team for our next Minister of Youth and Children. We have listed the position at local theological schools, as well as on our website. Please join with us in praying for the search team, our youth and children, and the future candidate.

Blessing Box Update: The Blessing boxes located on the church campus and at EyeWorks are being utilized –– thank you for your continued support of this ministry in our community! We're excited to announce that Steve Fox is building two new boxes to replace the old out-dated ones! Thank you, Steve!

Transforming our community Backpack Buddies - Thanks to your generous giving, our Backpack Buddies food bags have continued to go out to children in our community! Through a partnership with the Benson Area Ministerial Association and the Four Leaf Clove Program, our bags have been taken directly where they are needed most. A HUGE thank you to Steve and Marie Fox who have been packing the bags each week.

Food Pantry - The BBC Food Pantry continues to see individuals and families coming by through out each week. Thanks to your donations, we have been able to continue giving out bags of food, basic cleaning supplies, and other needs. As the pandemic continues forward, we are extremely thankful for the ways you continue to support our community through this ministry! Because of your generous giving, 44 families were helped through our food pantry in August!

Back-to-School Supply Drive - We were excited to once again join in partnership with BAMA and the Benson Chamber of Commerce in collecting and giving out school supplies for the new school year. Though things have looked very different for students and parents, these items were still needed! Thank you for donating and for volunteering your time to the drive this year!

Through serving Over the last few months, the Benson Baptist Men’s group has built three wheelchair ramps in our community. We are thankful for the giving of their time and skills, as well as your generous giving that makes this type of community engagement possible!

Vacation Bible School 2020 VBS looked very different this year as the pandemic forced us to move things to a virtual platform. We are thankful for all of the volunteers, parents, and kids who helped make this all possible!

A Short Prayer for the School Year: We pray for teachers, administrators, and support staff, that they will have endurance, patience, and that they will know their work is important and that we are thankful for them.

We pray for parents, that they will know that they are not alone. We pray that they will know they don’t have to be perfect, just as present as they can.

We pray for our children, teenagers, and college students as their classrooms have become virtual and as their building of friendship and community has been made harder. We pray that they will know that they don’t have to have all of the answers and that this will one day come to an end.

We pray we will know you are with us in these days. Amen.
