Independence Day Fun in Crested Butte

July 4: The fun starts early in the morning on the 4th of July at the Crested Butte Fire & EMS Volunteer’s pancake breakfast. If you’re looking to get some exercise in before tucking into some pancakes, the 46th Annual Gothic to Crested Butte Run, Walk, or Crawl 1/3 Marathon. Then join us in town for the annual parade, a fabulous spectacle of floats, music, and fun followed by the town waterfight. With music and food at the food court throughout the day and fireworks in the evening, it’s a truly special Independence Day in Crested Butte.

Bluegrass in Paradise | Mt. Crested Butte

July 4 to July 5: Traditional bluegrass and “newgrass” will be showcased in a range of events: a five-day camp for kids, workshops, children’s performances and ten top-level bands. “Bluegrass In Paradise” will keep festival goers on their feet.

Cattleman’s Days | Gunnison

July 5 to July 13: For 114 years, the Gunnison Valley has celebrated its western way of life with annual demonstrations of roping, racing and riding skills. This “Granddaddy of Colorado Rodeos” has grown from an annual get-together by local cowboys and cowgirls to a staged PRCA event that now attracts competitors from around the country.

Crested Butte Wildflower Festival

July 7 to July 13: Crested Butte, Colorado, designated the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado” since 1990, plays host to the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival every summer. Join us for the more than 200 individual events that make up the Festival, including photography and art classes, hikes, garden tours, cooking seminars, and more.

US Pro Cycling Challenge: Stage 2 Aspen to Crested Butte/Mt. Crested Butte

August 19: Similar to the Tour de France, professional racers ride across the State of Colorado over seven days. In this stage of the race, riders will speed through the streets of downtown Crested Butte and make their way to Mt. Crested Butte for a grueling uphill finish. In true Crested Butte fashion, there is a Block Party, Townie Crit race and a Strider race for kids; all to elevate the festivities of the bike race and truly make it a day to remember.

ABOUT THE ARTIST | JOSEPH NEWTON Joseph Newton (JOE) and his family moved to Crested Butte from San Francisco in June 2012 attracted by the beauty of the area, community and the opportunity to develop as an artist. JOE’s work is uniquely original and creative and each image is a mystery whether it’s a photo collage or an abstract photo. His photography work captures color, texture and the beauty or ugly of the subject. He has two shows coming this summer here in Crested Butte, both at the Piper Gallery during the week of July 21st and at the Crested Butte Arts Festival from August 1st3rd. JOE’s original works are available from gallery3 on Third and Elk.


Market Report Looking over the past year from May 2013 to May 2014, the real estate market was stronger than the prior year over the same time span. The following categories were all up: volume, price and number of properties sold and the average days on market are down: see chart below. Most of this can be attributed to the very strong summer the Crested Butte real estate market had in 2013. The buying and selling furry during the 2013 summer did taper off as we approached the holiday season. A cold snowy winter kept buyers inside and rumors of the ski area selling to new owners kept sellers in a holding pattern. All of that broke loose during spring skiing. As temperatures rose and all rumors were put to bed, buyers and sellers began to trade properties to create one of the busier springs in recent Crested Butte history. Our 2014 summer season is scheduled to become one of the busiest we have seen in the last 7 to 8 years. As of June 15th, we already have $35 million worth of real estate under contract. What we already know about Crested Butte is being discovered by more visitors, that is Crested Butte is a diamond in the rough. Values are increasing and time of sale is decreasing.
