BENNY EATS OUT THERE’S A HOT NEW(ISH) SPOT IN TOWN. AND THEY’VE GOT THAT CREAMY, GLORIOUS COFFEE HIT READY TO GO

The Morning Coffee Society might be the proverbial ‘new kid on the block’ in Long Jetty, but the new kid has fit right in. There’s a vibe of community in every essence of this café. It feels like your home away from home. The whole place offers a warmth, from the welcoming staff to the liquid gold, it truly is a great spot where you’ll more than likely leave with new friends. This café serves up treats and meals that have that homemade feel and care about them. The cabinet holds cakes and slices that would do your grandma proud and are incredibly hard to resist. No judgement if you take a couple home! They’ve got your standard favourites sorted with a Chilli Scram and an Avo Smash to drool over, but they’ve also got your adventurous foodie covered as well: think Eggs Benny with Pulled Pork (trust me, it’s a hit!) and Sweet Waffles with homemade caramel and sweet dukkah (yum!). Plus, with a gluten free friendly focus, The Morning Coffee Society has everyone sorted. We can’t be the only ones who have struggled to find delicious GF options?! But First, Coffee. The standard and quality of coffee will meet the needs of all my fellow caffeine lovers. It’s smooth, it’s strong, and it hits the spot just right in any of your preferred style. Early risers (and sunrise chasers) are sorted with the café opening at 5.30am on weekdays and 7am on the weekend. Plenty of time to get in brunch and lunch before grabbing your afternoon treat to head home You’vewith.got to put this place on your list! If the vibe doesn’t call to you, then the food and coffee definitely should. Book yourself in now and drop by for a visit. The Morning Coffee Society $ 6-7/334 The Entrance Road, Long Jetty 2261

What environment do you like to work in most?

What do you do to keep yourself motivated? I like to give myself random briefs. This keeps me creating. It might be as basic as picking two colours and creating three designs limited to them. What piece are you most proud of? Curating the “Grab life by the titties” charity exhibition with artist Mikayla Watson Brown. This was dedicated to Trish Kronhert, one of our very close friends, whose mum had been fighting breast cancer. I’m very proud of this. The show sold out and we raised over $15k.

A natural light sun filled room with a beer close by. Tim Travers

How has your work changed over time? I feel like I have developed a distinct style over time. It’s not perfect but that’s me. I’m not a perfectionist. It has gone from all just black and white to slowly adding some colour. I still only like to use a maximum of 2-4 colours, so I’m not moving mountains but it’s out of my comfort zone. Also having been able to illustrate digitally on an iPad has been a game changer. Creating more, more often.

I haven’t had the opportunity but I would be interested in doing it in the future. I think everyone can create art. It’s just about finding a medium that works well with you.

Who are you and what do you do? Hi, I’m Tim. A multidisciplinary designer and illustrator. Best known for my fun, illustrative design style utilising a minimal colour pallet. How long have you been a creative for? I have been annoying my parents with my arts and crafts for as long as I can remember. I didn’t come from a creative family. Everything I did was purely experimental: the good, the bad and the ugly. There was probably more of the latter. Maybe I was adopted. But they nurtured my crafts all the same. My journey kicked off in high school spending hours in class drawing skateboard logos and classic skate decks in notebooks. I remember making up a fictional skate brand called K.A.S; kick arse skateboarding. I thought it was the bees knees at the time. I used to paint and draw on my own skate decks too. So it’s been a while.

Have you thought about teaching your craft?

How did you get started on this journey? I started a skate/surf/clothing label called VATIC back in 2011. It was born out of my huge love for tee art and wanting to create. This led to designing local band tees and meeting a lot of other creatives. In 2017 I won the Young Henrys, Newtown Locals festival tee competition. This was a huge confidence boost. I still suffer from imposter syndrome today though. Where did you learn to do what you do? My illustration work all started with a bit of liquid courage. So I thank beer. But in all seriousness I have a Diploma of Visual Communication from Billy Blue. Who and what inspires you and your work? I am inspired by mid-century type and cartoon-style visuals. My youth was spent proudly wearing the eclectic designs of Mambo. Today, I like to think my art is reflective of my personality, with an underlying sense of humour and approach to life.

What is your favourite thing about what you do? I love illustrating funny ideas on the spot, I find it super fun and an easy way to unwind. Where do you hope your creative future takes you? I would love to design some beer cans in the future. Designing more mural based artwork in my local community would be amazing too. Create for yourself and not what you think others will like. great idea will always be stronger than just a pretty picture.

What’s the most rewarding aspect about your work? It’s pretty damn rad seeing someone wearing a tee that you have spent hours pouring your heart and soul into.

Both Kip and I were at our wits end with surfing and swimming in suits that would either wedgie up the bottom or fall down (or completely off in one instance!). We struggled to find a brand of suits that were functional, but also looked cool. This led us, as two twenty-three year olds, to having many ‘what-if’ conversations around starting a brand that could create the perfect suit, even if just for us and our friends to wear. Both of us were passionate about the ocean, people and vintage-inspired fashion and after many hours of designing and creating, our first-ever Penny suit was born.

Winki Suits MANLY, NSW WINKI SUITS WAS BORN OUT OF A NECESSITY FOR FUNCTIONAL, TIMELESS AND ETHICALLY PRODUCED SURF SUITS

Fast forward a few months and we were looking at manufacturing options. We both really wanted to create more than just another swimwear business. We wanted the manufacturing of our products to make a significant difference to the livelihoods of those who would be making them and create products that were environmentally times when we were faced with the option to produce our suits quickly and cheaply with global manufacturers, but we knew this wouldn’t create the purpose-driven business that we had desired. After praying about who to partner with, we were both led through different connections, to the same lady who runs The Blessed Project in the Philippines. The Blessed Project rescue women and children from human-trafficking, giving them a second chance at life through rehabilitation, a lot of love, a stable home and meeting their basic needs.

Part of the women’s rehabilitation is learning to sew, as it’s a form of therapy and is also a way the women can earn an income while they decide what they want to do next. In 2018, The Blessed Project were searching for a business to partner with them so they could have enough work to teach the women to sew, as well as earn an income to support their costs. We jumped at the opportunity and knew it was meant to be. Now, I’d be lying if I said everything had been hunky dory since then. We’ve faced many challenges (and still do to this day). We were new to business and swimwear, the women were new to sewing, we had a language barrier and together we were trying to create the ideal surf-suit. Safe to say, things didn’t go as planned and there were many laugh or you’ll cry moments. After about 16 months of back and forth, we created our first ever wearable, functional product. You couldn’t wipe the smiles off our faces. Despite the ongoing challenges, seeing the Blessed Project grow as we have, has been one of our greatest joys and rewards.  >>

So what’s happened now, three years into running Winki Suits? Well, we’ve seen exponential growth and are so thankful for each and every woman who purchases our products. We wouldn’t be able to do what we love and support The Blessed Project without our customers and our amazing community of women. In 2022, we faced a few tough business decisions which meant we had to bring the majority of our suit-production onshore here to Australia, where our suits are now ethically made by a local, familyrun manufacturer. However, we continue to support The Blessed Project financially through wages and sponsorships and they continue to produce 100% of our apparel and accessories. We’re so excited about this, as we’ve got some really exciting new products launching this year which the team are currently working on. Sustainability has been a big drive for us with these products and we’ve sourced high quality organic cotton and natural dyes, which will mean a higher cost price per product. But, to wear and produce something that is completely ethically and sustainably made brings us a lot of satisfaction. Our Bonnie suits are also made from recycled nylon and we use zero plastic from start to finish in the manufacturing of our products, including our compostable e-commerce postage bags. We hope this gives you a glimpse into who we are as a brand and a business and what we stand for. We have realised the impact that Winki can have on people’s lives and the planet and we’re constantly trying to improve what we do. We count it as an absolute privilege to create a product that some people wear whilst having some of life’s most rich experiences in nature. Check us out online to see what we mean!

Who is your biggest mentor? There are quite a few but I’d say I have three main people who I consider as mentors. Darren Burge from Dburge Surfboards always encourages me to think about and connect with my equipment.

What is your future of surfing looking like? Where do you hope to be in 5 years? I want to be travelling the world surfing, whether that’s through competing or free surfing, I guess I’ll find out, but I want to be travelling. I’m hoping to give the Pro Junior Series a good crack in the next year or two. Ultimately though, I just want to be having fun. Getting better at barrel riding is a huge goal of mine currently which I am keen to work on.

Who is your biggest inspiration? Steph Gilmore. She has this incredible ability to keep her trademark feminine style and still beat younger generation surfers who have a more aggressive approach. Do you have a secret/special board that only gets brought out on special occasions? I have a small wave board that is a combination of a twin fin and a shortboard and it flies in grovelly waves.

10 What’s your home break? Macmasters/Avoca Beach. Where did your love of surfing begin? My love of surfing began when I started surfing on Friday afternoons at a surf school in Avoca with a few friends on foamies. I would only go once a week, but I always looked forward to it. Do you remember your first wave? I can remember my first wave on a fibreglass. It was at Umina Beach when I was 13 and I remember getting up and falling off thinking how ‘wobbly’ the board was. Where is your favourite place to surf in Australia?

Q&A

What board are you currently riding? Dburge Surfboards 5’7 City Slicker. Wave of your life? I don’t think I’ve experienced ‘the wave of my life’ yet but I hope it’s coming! I do remember a wave I had at Macs that had the perfect canvas and ran the whole way down the point and then connected with the beachie closeout. What’s your go to wax? Huey’s Choice. What are you currently listening to? Cooper Chapman’s Good Humans podcast.

Jono Shade has been so welcoming and supportive of womens’ surfing and gives up a lot of his time to help us groms at Avoca Boardriders. Finally, Luke Bonfield who is continually helping me to get better. He is an awesome coach who always makes it fun and will always find a wave. What was the best session you’ve ever had? The best session I’ve ever had was out Macs point one day. I had been struggling with connecting everything and this day everything came together, and I felt so good I even went for a few airs.

I haven’t really gone on many surf trips yet, but I’ve had a few fun surfs at Cabarita. I liked it because even though it was busy there were heaps of waves and different peaks you could surf.

Most memorable surf memory, so far? Catching one of the longest waves of my life at Crescent Head. If you could surf with anyone in the world, who would it be? I reckon it would be pretty cool to have said you have surfed with Kelly Slater, but I would also love to surf with Griffin Colapinto. His vibes are always super high and he is an epic surfer.

Favourite local cafe? Bowlarama. I love a post or pre-surf smoothie bowl. Do you have any advice for beginners? Have fun and laugh when you fall off, don’t take it too seriously.

RAPID FIRE - THIS OR THAT? 1, 2 or 3 fins? 3. Natural or goofy? Natural. High or low tide? Low. Barrels or airs? Barrels. Sunrise or sunset? Sunrise. Summer or winter? Winter for the waves and the snow, but summer for the warm weather! East coast or west coast? East. I am yet to visit the west coast, so ask me again soon as that may change. 3–4ft or 8–10ft? 3 4 foot. Parmi or parma? Parmi. Beachie or point break? Both. Left or right? Both.

Many of us have had to postpone a few roadies and overseas trips thanks to the weather (and the C-word that shall not be named). However, it’s starting to look like we’re through the thick of it *frantically searches for something wooden*, and maybe we can now start looking forward to adventures a bit further afield. The one saving grace of a cold, wet winter is that fluffy white stuff. Many of us haven’t touched snow for the best part of two seasons. So naturally, the Snowy Mountains were descended upon by thousands of snow-hungry frothers, desperate to get their ski legs back. Maybe you were one of the lucky ones who managed to cash in on that early dump. Jindabyne and the Snowy Mountains are synonymous with these winter adventures. Many of us had our first encounters with the white stuff up at Perisher and Thredbo. However, have you ever thought about shooting down there in the warmer months? Let me take you there...

IT’S BEEN A LONG, WET WINTER. ANYONE ELSE FEEL LIKE WE’VE BEEN IN WINTER SINCE 2020? FINALLY, THE SIGNS OF SPRING ARE IN THE AIR AND IT LOOKS LIKE WE’VE SEEN THE LAST OF LA NIÑA

While you might not want to brave Lake Jindabyne in winter, in the summer it’s 30 square kilometres of wakeboarding paradise. Not ready to cart your boat the 6-hour stint down the Hume? Luckily, On the Rope have done the hard work for you. Crystal and Luke’s not-for-profit was set up in 2021 to promote the importance of mental health, and to show that getting out on the water isn’t just for those who can afford a boat. They run daily wakeboard and wakesurf trips throughout summer. Whether you’re a total novice or a seasoned pro, they are happy to take the time to show you the ropes, help you develop new skills, and generally get you stoked to be out on the water.
