Proud of Our Progress Spanish Fork welcomes thousands to enjoy the events of Fiesta Days and all that the city offers year-round

I

t’s the greatest time of the year! Nothing pairs better than summertime and Spanish Fork Fiesta Days. Whether you’ve been to Fiesta Days for the past 80 years or have never been before, you will want to spend part of your July in Spanish Fork. With over 30 different events across 21 days, there is something for everyone. 8 | 2022 FIESTA DAYS

Spanish Fork is truly "Somewhere to be Proud of." I’m particularly proud to host our award-winning PyroMusical and 80th year of the hall-offame Fiesta Days Rodeo, which has sold out the last 67 consecutive nights! I also take pride in the many volunteers and committees that dedicate so much time to make the events successful.

Thank you, we couldn’t celebrate without you. My wife Amber and I had the chance to be on one of the volunteer committees a few years ago, and the payoff comes in seeing the events fill up with individuals and families from Spanish Fork and all over Utah coming to celebrate the home of Pride and Progress!

Front Row to Greatness From Grand Parades to coaching youth sports, Spanish Fork residents are dedicated to giving their time to make the city better Being part of the Fiesta Days Executive Committee has given us a front row seat to see how the citizens of Spanish Fork show their pride in this city, from the volunteers who organize the Grand Parade and the PyroMusical to the police department and EMTs that keep us safe. We have also watched our city employees work late into the night making sure everything is ready for the festivities. We are proud of this. One of our favorite Fiesta Days events is the Flag Retirement Ceremony. Our local National Guard works tirelessly to make sure this solemn event gives this country’s symbol of freedom a respectful farewell. All are welcome to participate. We are proud of this, too. We have raised three children in Spanish Fork who have participated in community sports and other events. Again, the number of citizens volunteering their time is amazing.

A Principled Approach Lynn & Joanne Jones blend experience and enthusiasm for the hometown to represent the celebration as grand marshals

I

n a lot of ways, Lynn and Joanne Jones are the embodiment of Spanish Fork being the home of pride and progress. They have called the corner of 100 West and 700 North home almost their entire married lives — currently living in a home next door to the one they raised their children in. They also still own farmland west of the freeway and enjoy spending time there. But that quiet home is also located just feet away from commercial development that includes the offices, retail shops and restaurants ubiquitous with Spanish Fork Main Street. They regale visitors with stories of the old days, like when instead of playing ball at the Russell Swenson Baseball Complex or a number of other venues around town, everyone played baseball at the one field in town, which was located where Park Elementary is today. Or when the Jex Store where Joanne’s father worked accepted government-instituted ration coupons during World War II. But mostly, they understand Spanish Fork. “This is home,” Joanne says. “I’ve always lived here and maybe I took it for granted, but I’ve loved it here.” For Lynn and Joanne, the rewards come from sacrifices made to improve the city and make it a great place to live, work and raise their children. “My whole life has been centered around this city,” Lynn says. “Whether it was playing baseball as a young man, working as a fireman or coaching 18 | 2022 FIESTA DAYS

and teaching the youth, I’ve wanted to make a difference.” Now in their late 80s, Lynn and Joanne reflect on their lives with an urgency to get more of their to-do lists taken care of, but with the ability to reflect on loved ones and friends who have already gone. “We grew up with amazing people — friends, relatives and neighbors — who set the foundation for the city we have today,” Lynn says. The two grew up going to the same church congregation, but didn’t really connect until high school, when Lynn was a threesport athlete and member of the student council and Joanne was a cheerleader and fellow member of the student council. The couple dated and got married while Lynn was attending BYU on a baseball scholarship. Lynn had plans to be a coach, but after his own coach, David Crowton, experienced a health scare, he changed his plans to teaching elementary school. He initially taught sixth grade at the newly built Park Elementary — taking time out to move to Los Angeles and earn a master’s degree from Los Angeles State College (now California State University, Los Angeles). With a master’s degree in hand, he became the principal at elementary schools in Benjamin, Springville and Salem before becoming a middle school principal in both Spanish Fork and Payson. “I’ve loved every place I’ve been,” he says. “I appreciated the chance to interact with great teachers, parents and stu-

dents. It was a rewarding way to spend my life’s work.” Lynn continued in education until retiring in 1994 after 38 years. Joanne also spent time working for various schools, including working as an aid at the Lakeshore School until its closing in the 1980s. She had previously worked at the middle school, but changed jobs when Lynn was hired as the principal. Through all of this, and despite his college coach’s warning, Lynn continued to coach youth in city leagues for years. In fact, as many people know him as “Coach” (and in younger years “Buck”) as call him Lynn. Besides his time working for the school district, Lynn also gave a significant amount of his time as a volunteer firefighter,

“We’ve always participated in Fiesta Days and can usually be found sitting in front of the fire department on Main Street during the Parade,” says Lynn Jones. “I guess, this year, we will be in the Parade, which will be different.” which he first did at the encouragement of Joanne’s father. He spent 33 years working with the fire department, including two years as the fire chief. In 1997, he served as the president of the state firemen’s association. He continues to be on the retired fire fighters committee and appreciates the chance it gives him to remain connected. sfFiestaDays.com

A Life-Long Legacy Lane Henderson’s dedication to Spanish Fork — and telling the stories of its people — have made history

L

ane Henderson doesn’t really remember life without working at the printing shop on Main Street that still houses his office and, to a large degree, his heart. “I’ve been working here since I was five years old,” Lane says. “I would help my dad with whatever I could.” That dedication to work, community and family have continued to drive Lane’s legacy in the decades since. His parents — J.C. and Maureen Henderson — ran the Spanish Fork Press, which included printing projects for customers, publishing a community newspaper and meeting the other publishing needs of the community, since the 1940s. Lane took over operations of the business in the mid-1980s and has been key to telling the stories of neighbors and friends in Spanish Fork — mostly through his efforts as editor of the Spanish Fork Press. “I journaled everything about Spanish Fork,” he says. “I knew every wedding, went to every city council meeting and covered every high school sporting event.” The Spanish Fork Press was a beloved part of the community that highlighted the best of the community and featured neighbors and friends. “The newspaper concentrated

on positive things,” Lane says. “We tried to stay positive and build on the things that make this community great. We enjoyed giving people a chance to be featured in the newspaper and giving them some recognition for the good they were doing.” The newspaper dedicated a significant amount of time, space and effort to assist with the creation of the Veteran’s Memorial located at then corner of Main Street and 200 North. The efforts earned Lane and the paper state-wide recognition for community service by a newspaper. “My dad was a veteran and was working hard on raising money for the memorial,” Lane says. “He asked us to keep it in the public conversation until it could be built. It is a legacy to his efforts — and the efforts of others in our community — that we have that memorial.” Like many other locals, Lane’s efforts to serve didn’t stop with his business ventures. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, president of the Utah Press Club and served on the board of directors of SelectHealth. A dedicated member of his church, Lane sold the Spanish Fork Press to the Daily Herald in 2001 when he and his wife, Leslie, served as leaders of the Italy Milan Mission for the Church of Je-

sus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was a return to the same mission Lane served in as a young man. When they returned, Lane continued his work in the business — rebranding the business as J-Mart — and in his community. He served as mayor and city council member in Salem. Perhaps his longest-lasting legacy as mayor came from a more personal sacrifice. With Nebo School District needing to build a new high school to meet the growing needs of people living between Payson and Spanish Fork, Lane knew having a high school in Salem would be a game changer for generations. However, a suitable site couldn’t be found. “I came home and asked my wife, ‘how do you feel about moving?’” Lane says. “She said, ‘yes’ and we sold our home and farm to the school district. That shows you the level of sacrifice my wife and I were willing to give to the community. We knew it would

We’ve tried to carry that on with everything we do. The world has changed since my dad owned the business, but the dedication to people hasn’t.” sfFiestaDays.com

Flag Retirement

Pledge Allegiance Proper flag retirement celebrates the nation’s most-recognizable symbol DETAILS This favorite annual tradition pays respect to our country. The Utah Army National Guard, with assistance from the American Legion and local scout troops, properly retire hundreds of flags collected from throughout the community. The celebration features music from the National Guard’s 23rd Army Band, special guest speakers, community leaders, local veterans, and a 21-gun salute. Congress has authorized sfFiestaDays.com

flags worn beyond repair to be destroyed, preferably by fire in a dignified manner, showing respect and reverence. Any personal flags in your possession in need of retirement may be dropped off pre-folded in the American Flag Collection Boxes at the Parks & Recreation offices (775 N Main) or the Spanish Fork City offices (40 S Main) by July 13. Any groups interested in folding flags prior to the event can contact the Parks & Recreation office at 801-804-4600.

Youth groups should gather old flags to be retired and bring them pre-folded two hours before the ceremony to the north side of the arena. Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and others wanting to take place in the ceremony are asked to arrive by 7 p.m. (for scouts, please be in full uniform). Concession items (cold drinks and treats) are for sale, with proceeds benefiting the families of our local military personnel. Cash donation containers are

available for those interested in assisting the families of veterans.

PyroMusical

Info DATE + TIME July 16, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. LOCATION Sports Park Soccer Fields, 295 W Volunteer Dr CONTACT Spanish Fork Parks & Recreation, 801-804-4600

Let the Party Begin! The PyroMusical is always a blast! DETAILS Some people do fireworks, the Fiesta Days celebration does PyroMusicals! Come early with blankets and chairs, hang out, get free stuff and enjoy food trucks — lots of them! Enjoy dinner and sweet treats from over two dozen food trucks while the party starts in preparation for the fireworks. Whitney Lusk, a country music artist from Spanish Fork begins the festivities at 6 p.m. She will be followed by Party Rock Project from 8 p.m. until dark. Party Rock Project was such a blast last year that they were invited back again. Their shows are a highly entertaining mix of an epic rock/pop concert, intimate piano bar, laugh-out-loud comedy show, and competitive audience participation. After the sun sets, the sky becomes a tapestry, painted with wonderful colors and effects that will dazzle. The show starts with an upbeat and eclectic playlist of songs that is synchronized to some of the best fireworks to enhance and create a theatrical experience. You are sure to experience something that will keep you talking for years to come.

We welcome marching bands, floats, businesses, queen royalties, community groups, etc. The Fiesta Days Grand Parade is a family tradition, a longtime favorite among residents, and this year’s line-up will not disappoint! GRAND MARSHAL Our 2022 Fiesta Days Grand Marshals will be Lynn & Joanne Jones, long-time, service-oriented residents who love Spanish Fork and have done much through the years to give back to our community.

PIONEER SPIRIT AWARD Our 2022 Fiesta Days Pioneer Spirit Award recipient is Lane Henderson. DISTRIBUTION POLICY Parade Entries will be allowed to distribute literature, candy or other promotional items during the Grand Parade. These items must be handed to spectators behind the white fog line (at the side of the road) by out-walkers. No items may be thrown from a float, vehicle, or out-walkers. SPECTATOR SAFETY Spectators should stay behind the fog line (white line) at all times. Parents, please help us keep your children off any portion of the street assigned to the parade route. We want

our Grand Parade to be FUN, but more importantly SAFE! There will be zero tolerance for any projectile (candy, objects, water, etc.) thrown. Any water shooting devices (blasters, cannons, squirt guns, water balloons, etc.) are prohibited. Any entry violating this policy is subject to immediately being pulled from the parade. PARADE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Volunteers are needed in many areas throughout the parade. We are in need of block monitors to help keep the area safe by reminding parents to keep their children behind the white fog line. Volunteers are also needed to help in the staging area, carry

banners in the parade, and follow horses in the parade to clean up after them. All volunteers will be provided with a Fiesta Days shirt! If you are interested, please fill out a volunteer form or contact the Parade Chairmen by email.
