HERMES THE MESSENGER

As Hermes is the messenger of all the gods in Greek Mythology, the design proposal incorporates means of communication via people. This was then interrupted as doorways, mail, (in relation to mail boxes) bells etc. Narrowing it down through peer review however, led to the design of a paper letter like machine, that would open and close via a pulley system to reveal a message. This idea was explored, with the existing machine works of a garage roller door to understand a pulley system. Once refined, the model projected this idea of an ancient scroll, somewhat like the scrolls used in Ancient Greece, expanding on a frame, via a string and pulley wheels.

Hermes is a deity from Greek mythology. He is the son of Zeus and Maia, one of the seven Pleiades. Hermes is commonly known as the messenger of the gods, and is often depicted with a winged hat and sandals, as well as carrying a caduceus, a staff with two intertwined snakes.

Hermes traveled all over the Greek domain, from Mount Olympus to the depths to the depths of the underworld. Hermes was famed due to delivering a message from Zeus to Hades, regarding his daughter (Zeus) Persephone being kidnapped by Hades. Hades compromised and allowed Persephone to live with her mother for two thirds of the year, thus creating the seasons.

His character is portrayed as young, with olive tanned skin and bod-like physique. His famously known wings of both body, shoes and helmet portray the element of movement and fluency. Something similar with the fonts used.

Understanding

As for being the son of Zeus, the god of all Greek Gods, Hermes was in perfect physical form as well as intelligence- a cunning god with a sense of humor- pulling pranks on his fellow gods. He floats lightly due to his wings- so a structure that floats in that space best suits his qualities. Hence a fast message like machine needs to be represented for Hermes as that is his main qualities.

Fonts are of solid colours and are textured to represent structure, whilst also showing movement and fluencies.

Fonts vary from colour to colour, but consists of direction and movement.

Design Elements

AI created imagery showcases the ideas of what Hermes Looks likemakes it easy to visualize the being.

Visualization Movement

Similar colours inducted into Hermes character are of light blues, browns and orange tones. These images represent the colours associated with Hermes.

Clearly, Hermes is pictured as an organic human figure, of good physique and strength. He is surrounded in wings and lightness.

Red - base plate (board)

Black - Pulley cable (string)

Blue - Tunnel object (straw)

The Muscle movement is created via a string being pulled either through tunnel like shapes or around in a circular motion to coil up.

This diagram shows the motion of the system at work. The idea is that the scroll opens whilst revealing expressive threedimensional images and text

Alternatively, on the return, the system acts as the scroll coils around itself, retracting images back into itself and hiding the message from prying eyes.

Idea Formation

As Hermes is the Messenger of the Gods, he needs to be represented in forms of communications.

Mailbox

Opening and closing of a hinged door on a mailbox conveying a message transfer.

Doorway

The most basic form of communication, a door way. Also acting on a hinge.

Castle door

Following the combination of the mailbox and door- creates a drawbridge mechanism.

The scroll controlled within the frame will move upwards via a stepper motor, and down via gravity. This is due to the axles of the scroll being controlled within the geometry of the frame.

Hermes controls the movement of communication, from the overworld to the underworld, and therefore the scroll follows the same vertical movement as of which Hermes travels.

Bell

A reception bell which is compressed to trigger a noise. Transfer of energy into noise creates communication.

Letter

The letter acts upon the hinge of the doorway, but with the addition of the bell as for a notification or ding noise received via email.

Scroll

The combination of both the time period of draw bridges uses as well as the form of a letter.

The Large Scale frame was aimed to advertise a singular face of text or illustration. Able to be seen either side.

The angled ceiling frame was exploring the use of ceilings to create interesting geometry as well as displaying downwards, forcing viewers to look up and examine in detail.

Multiple miniature frames hung from the ceiling aimed to counterweight one another as they glided upwards and downwards with motion, creating verticality in a vertical space

The circular pedestal was created with the intention of the viewers being able to directly interact with the installation, 3600 access.

Scroll will be able to move as counterweights for one another, meaning that in the mezzanine space, scrolls and frames will be extending and retracting constantly which creates a connection with the viewer.
