Much like our city and state, all of the ingredients are already here. We have the talent, the energy, the creativity, the drive—and the vision—to achieve this. As Harrison said, “We count not ourselves to have attained, but we follow after.”

Future Presidents of America, the Juneteenth Foodways Festival, Project POTUS, the New Century Curator initiative, and innovative tools that will unlock the full potential of our 3D collection, are changing the status quo and setting forth a new model for what a history museum and presidential site can be. As 2022 comes to a close, and the promises and potential of 2023 loom ahead, count on us to continue to strive toward these ambitious goals. You will find us working hard to demonstrate that we’re worthy of this president’s legacy, as we build upon our reputation for relevance, significance—and prove to the world we have something worth sharing. We are on the cusp of an even greater moment, and we are excited to have you as our friends, advocates, and supporters. Together, we will follow after—if not fully attain!

A World DestinationClass

And in this very moment we’re approaching the culmination of the $6M+ capital campaign construction, having exceeded our fundraising goals by almost 15%, engaged more than 500 supporters from over 60 counties in Indiana, and more than 25 states across the United States. To have so meaningfully transformed our grounds and invested deeply in the historic residence for the century to come is a substantial accomplishment.

President

“We have the talent, achievethedrive—andcreativity,energy,thethethevision—tothis.”

The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site has spent the better part of the past decade demonstrating its local relevance and national significance as a national historic landmark and home of an American president. We are fortunate to have a dynamic board of directors, an amazingly energetic and creative staff, and some of the best and most committed volunteers you’ll find anywhere.

Very sincerely yours,

Charles A. Hyde, President & CEO FROM THE Cover image: Future Presidents of America alumni enjoy a beautiful summer evening on Presidential Site grounds at the Future Presidents of America Alumni Evening and Presidential Mentor Pinning Ceremony on June 29, 2022.

But you will not find us resting upon our laurels. The opportunity we see for the Presidential Site to significantly encourage and bolster civil civic discourse and public participation in the American system of self-government, suggest that this is a strong beginning, and there’s much more work to do as we look to the future. That is why you will find us staying true to our “locally relevant, nationally significant” commitment that propelled us to one of the top 5 “things to do” in Indianapolis, even as we challenge ourselves to align with altogether new ambitions to prove ourselves as a world class destination.

The metal book is an effort to honor the nearly 1,500 citizens naturalized at the site over the past 20 years, along with those who will do so in the future, and features pages that turn for a tactile experience. “This is very dynamic, much like history itself,” says the site’s president and CEO, Charles Hyde, noting that pages can be added year after year.

THE PREFACE. With the recent $6 million Old Glory, New Vision campaign secured, the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site has undergone significant improvements with more to come. The project includes historically appropriate maintenance and renovations to Harrison’s 1875 Italianate Victorian home, along with upgrades to the grounds that focus on visibility and community connections.

LET’S SET THE SCENE. Since 2003, in an annual July ceremony coinciding with Independence Day, immigrants from around the world have become naturalized citizens under the century-old oak trees on the south lawn of the site, through a partnership with the federal court. “It’s our way, as a presidential site, to honor and acknowledge just how important citizenship is and how central it is to our American system of self-government,” says Hyde.”

HISTORIC STRUCTURES REPORT

PAGE 8 | THE STATESMAN

The HSR for the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site was completed in 2019 by Ratio Architects, Inc. It is over 500 pages with appendixes and photographs. As we complete the current projects the HSR is our guide. The HSR is a living document and all of the current work will be added to the history of the structure. The HSR along with new reports like the Historic Paint and Surface Analysis are guiding all of our decision making. The goal is to make the house as much like it was during the time that the Harrison family lived in the structure as possible using the historic evidence. The evidence includes historic photographs, primary documents such as Benjamin Harrison’s perpetual diary documenting initial construction, letters talking about the 1890s renovations, later letters from Mary Lord Harrison, period newspaper accounts, etc. All of the evidence in the HSR guide the process for making the house more authentic to the Harrison family era.   DID YOU Know?

HARRISON IN HIS O wn Words

A Historic Structures Report (HSR) is a document that provides information about a property or buildings history, existing condition, and provides recommendations for restoration. The HSR records all known construction details, modifications, repairs, and other changes in a structure. The HSR is a primary resource for preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, or reconstruction.

On Christmas day in 1888 Benjamin McKee received a gift of special interest to General Harrison. It was a box containing a miniature kit of cabinet maker’s tools. The un-signed note accompanying it suggested that the General might find it serviceable in making up his cabinet. Baby McKee was instructed to give the General full opportunity to use the tools for that purpose. (As reported in Frank Leslie’s January 5, 1889)

Holidays At The White House

President Benjamin Harrison displays the first decorated White House Christmas tree, placed in the second floor Yellow Oval Room, then used as a library and family parlor. The Harrison’s 1889 Christmas tree (a Foxtail Hemlock) is described as a large gorgeous tree trimmed by the President, his family, and staff. It carried toys not only for the children of the family but for everyone attached to the White House and their families.

President John Adams held the first recorded White House Christmas party for his granddaughter, inviting government officials and their children.

Three years after electricity was introduced in the White House, the first electric lights are used on a Christmas tree at the White House to the delight of the young daughters of President Grover Cleveland.

One thing that I thought made the Project POTUS presentations unique was the medium by which I received the students’ submissions. It has been my experience that students submit a slide deck, which would stand on its own as a presentation for a judge. Project POTUS required students to send in videos of their submissions, which allowed for a lot more creativity.

This past spring, I was honored to play a part in the inaugural Project POTUS, a program where students research presidents, presentations, designand deliver that information in creative ways. I served as a Citizen Juror for the middle school division.

The students exhibited a variety of skill levels, however, each one had its own interesting take on their chosen President. Most included pictures of their President, as well as other people related to that President.

Between historical tours, exciting events, and flourishing gardens, the Benjamin Presidential Site offers ample opportunity for volunteers of any background to find their passion among the passionate. While many of our superb volunteers choose more public-facing options like giving tours of the museum or greeting guests in our Welcome Center, others seek out more personal opportunities.

“The very first day, the kids stick to themselves just taking everything in, but as the week progresses, they are talking more and making friends. They’re laughing and having a good time,” said Mike, “The most impressive thing to me is watching them progress throughout the week and see them become more confident.”

VOLUNTEER Report PAGE 14 | THE STATESMAN

In July, the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site eagerly opened its historic doors to twenty enthusiastic young leaders for the 2022 Future Presidents of America camp. During this 5-day life-changing camp, two of our most devoted volunteers offered their talents and expertise to give these young leaders a week they would never forget.

Between enlightening field trips, enticing guest speakers, and stimulating debates, our volunteers learn as much from our Future Presidents as they do from them. Both Mike and Martha expressed their gratitude towards Vice President of Education and organizer of the Future Presidents of

Volunteers Martha and Mike have over twenty years of volunteer experience at the Presidential Site combined and ten years of combined experience working with Future Presidents of America. Volunteers serve as crucial Future Presidents of America team members and have their own set of responsibilities during the camp. Volunteers are the first friendly faces participants, and their families engage on site; they’re responsible for the ceremonial flag raising and lowering each day, facilitate conversations, aid team members with programs, and serve as an additional resource to the future presidents.

The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site is not only proud of the graduates of Future Presidents of America but of the many people who work tirelessly to ensure these young leaders leave our care with a new sense of confidence and civic duty. We thank Martha, Mike, and the many other volunteers who make programs like these possible. We encourage anyone seeking jmittman@bhpsite.org for more information. We would be honored to have you in for a tour and to learn more about our volunteer program. Want to learn more? Visit Harrison.org/VolunteerPresidentBenjamin

In 1888, Harrie Rose did a series of photographs during the campaign and the album in our collection includes this photograph of a floral arrangement in the Front Hallway. A period newspaper article gives the following details: “mounted on an immense easel of ferns and rosebuds,” was an arrangement in the form of an American flag, given by Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Foster Jr. (governor of Ohio 1880-1884). It was “a perfect representation of a flag, the white stripes being formed of balsams, the red of scarlet geraniums and the blue of clematis, with white larkspurs for the stars. It had a border of ferns, pansies, roses and dahlias.”  This image along with one of the Library showing the back hallway through the door are being used as key pieces of evidence in the renovation currently underway. Wallpaper seen in these photos will be drawn and produced by Aesthetic Interiors of Wabash, Indiana. The entry hall is a period aesthetic paper that can also be seen in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, at this link: cooperhewitt.org/objects/102334641/https://collection.

The longer back hallway on the first floor is a fleur-de-lis pattern, as seen in this image (left).

This photograph by George H. Luse, shows the Upstairs Sitting Room as it appeared in the late 1890s. The ceiling, medallion, and moldings all painted. Preliminary paint analysis shows a pale pink and gray green in this room during the late 1890s. We will be working to replicate the floral wallpaper and color scheme in this room. he Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site’s Future Presidents of America® program was created in 2015 to deploy our public outreach to promote public spirit and civic mindedness through educational activities and hands-on encounters with U.S. culture and history. It is designed to help young people grow into leaders who exercise their civic responsibility by actively participating in civil society. We strongly believe that this initiative’s greatest impact is as an effective model that can be reproduced nationally. Through generous partners, we have begun a comprehensive benchmarking initiative, and were able to begin a pilot program last summer. Thank you to all of our Future Presidents of America® funders including Gracia E. Johnson Foundation, Nicholas H. Noyes, Jr. Memorial Foundation, and Wing Arts & Humanities Fund. Additionally, thanks to Indy Summer Youth Programs supported by the Summer Youth Program Fund, a collaboration between The Indianapolis Foundation, a CICF affiliate, and 10 funders in Marion County.

Thank you also to our Gracia Johnson Floyd Presidential Fellow, Jennifer Hodge, for her hard work in making the national initiative a success!

The Presidential Site is honored to continue the new tradition we began in 2020 to help call the community together with a musical salute in tribute to ALL VETERANS, those still with us and those who have passed on. This musical program will start at 8:45 PM EST with a musical salute to living veterans with the Service Songs of each branch of the Armed Forces broadcast from the Presidential Site. At 9:00 PM EST, a lone bugler will sound Taps to honor all veterans who have passed on. We hope musically inclined citizens nationwide will join this bugler in playing Taps at 9:00 PM EST. We hope the bugle call inspires everyone who hears it to pause and reflect on the dedication and important service of our veterans, and how their efforts have helped preserve the American system of self-government we enjoy today.

Every year we hunker down around the piano or organ and sing songs to celebrate the holiday season. These songs fill us with joy and lift our spirits and hearts.
