ADAPTIVE REUSE & THE SECRET
LIFE OF MATERIALS
A conversation on: Space, Texture, Function and Form
Texture and Tactillity
A two sided wall system, the cement pour brings texture and excitement to those who are drawn to interact with it’s surface, while the gypsum backing allows for smooth interface that can push and pull circulation or allow for multiple attachments depending on the function needed in the space it resides.
The process in which material is extracted, reformed within a mold of reused structural components and made anew.
During the course of the semester, as a team we were tasked in creating a wall system from reused materials within a car park that could be implemented in any type of building afterwards no matter the program. The program for this project was a primary school within a car park.
The texture of the concrete pour was to have a fabric like texture to be engaging for all and the back side, a stud wall system that would allow for a functional addition where attachments could be made depending on the walls placement in program.
We were tasked with creating a concept model showing off our wall system in action at a 1/8 scale and reflecting the structure of the car park. For us in our design, we wanted as much flexibility in program along with the cuts we made in the floor plates to create new and dynamic circulation for the users. From the natural slant of the car park, to flat surfaces of classrooms and the steps that lead to them, creating a place of movement.
Sections and plan examples of what the car park could be like. This section was 46”x 40” when printed.
PLATTE RIVER FABRICATION
A conversation on: Co-habitation, Making and Mixed Use
latte River latte River FABRICATION
Charged with creating a project that married two different style of makers along with 10 living spaces within the program, I lead our team in concept, renders, graphics and modeling. Our project was based around metal sculptors and wood workers, where we wished to celebrate the coming and going of materials where the general public could become immersed in the process. Using a courtyard typology we carved away from the form for living spaces above with double height spaces within for space for large scale projects. Circulation was fundamental for us in this project.
A BIKE CO-OP FOR AKRON, CO
A conversation on: Accessibility, Activation & Changing Perspectives
Based on the historic main street of Akron, Colorado, this project was used to revitalize the district. A town with a maximum speed limit of 30 with zero bike lanes or a coffee shop, the goal was to pay homage to the vernacular and scale surroundings while help modernize Akron. Using materials similar to the surroundings and programmed volumes, the new form allowed for activation of what typically were austere side walks.
With a Bike Co-op suspended over the coffee shop, this typology allows for diverse opportunities for townspeople to find places to hang out, see new views of the town and learn how to work on bikes. All while having some fun with a ramp that can be used to get to the shop.

U.K. Competition Piece
Benjamin TribbleCreated for a competition for a bird watching haven in Britain, this projects design was based on taking park goers on a journey through a burrow and allowing new perspectives at the ground level as if one was a small woodland creature. With a circulation that leads you into the ground with a communal area, it then circles the base before popping up above the ground into a 180 degree viewing area protected from the elements along with an outdoor viewing spot. The building pays homage to the half timber style of Britain and creates a home for local creatures. With rough cement work, the hope is that this building will become overgrown in moss and other flora, becoming a part of the landscape.
