Who is Benjamin Devos?

Devos Ever since my childhood trips up to Vermont every winter to go skiing with my mom and brothers, I had always had a natural love for being outdoors and immersed in the beautiful native vegetation and scenic landscapes that New England has to offer. Going into the University of Massachussetts, Amherst I decided to go down the more technical side of school doing first computer science learning how to code and work with computer programs and then civil engineering working with real world materials to build lasting structures. But with my love for the outdoors I realized an outlet for all my passions was through landscape architecture, especially at UMass. With little drawing and design experience I found the creative aspect an exciting challenge and realized this desire to complete a challenge and thus design a new landscape element into the world was a great road to follow, and I am so excited to push on and not only design and develop but study and teach the amazing landscapes that will be enjoyed by people with the same love for nature and the outdoors as myself.

Project 1: Pulaski Park Redesign Design Goals: Utilizing both hand graphics and computer aided design, this park redesign helps engage the community through the addition of engaging elements such as community garden, skate park, and several lawns for gathering. The space has a mix of slow paced areas for people to sit and relax, and then areas for fast paced action such as sports or walking a dog. This park was the answer the community was asking for and is a modern approach to a park that would be utilized by people from the age of 7 to the age of 70. The park was 3d modelled with sketchup.

Project 2: Private Residential Design Design Goals: The goal of this design was to create a design for clients wanting to design their private residence in Cape Cod. Using the Cape Cod inspired architecture, we had to design to fit all the necessary amenities such as driveway, 3-car port with enough room to fit his tractor, a pool, a guesthouse, and more, all while maintaining amazing views out to the water. There was room for a walking trail as well as greenhouse, tool shed, a gazebo, and wildflower sections as well as planted trees, shrubs, and groundcover. The design utilized hand graphics of plans, sections, and perspectives, and a model was created to represent the scale of the site. The plan is portrayed in two different scales for effect of the whole property versus the house closer up.

Project 3: Jones Library Remodel Design Goals: The goal of redesigning the Jones Library was to prepare layout and dimensional plans as well as grading and drainage plans to create a functional and safe environment in downtown Amherst and make a more vibrant community gathering place with an outdoor classroom and other community based amenities. This was a good chance to create interesting grade changes and work with the land instead of just building on top.

Project 4: La Avenida Harrison Design Goals: The goal of the design was to transform the way users interact with downtown neighborhoods. Focusing on a small-scale streetscape in the heart of an urban center, the dynamic of street use shifted from a heavy flow of cars and foot traffic to a more equitable and pedestrian friendly environment. From the “complete street” implementation in Dwight St and Avenida Harrison Plaza being implemented off Harrison Avenue, the design engages and connects residents and businesses in the downtown area and creates new opportunities such as the Harrison Avenue Greenway connecting to Falcons Ave and a new mixed-use commercial and residential building.

Project 5: Sheldon Field Design Goals: The design for Sheldon Field in Northampton, MA revolved around the program which included; 4 baseball diamonds, two soccer fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, parking, walking trails, a dog park, a fountain, pavillion, playgrounds and more. This project integrated CAD and adobe software such as photoshop and inDesign along with 3d modeling software like sketchup.

Ammenities such as the tot lot are programmed to bring in a range of users and bring back vitality into the area.

Project 6: Community Housing Development Design Goals: The design for Magnolia Gardens aims to be a hub for asian community housing in Amherst, MA. The project includes housing units, lawns and gardens, site plan and zoomed in site plan for detail, 3d modeling, and more. Ammenities include subgrade parking under the housing units and topography played a large role in how the design is utilized by residents include private, semi private, and public areas and access for dump trucks, plows, firetrucks, and other vital access vehicles. Residents have both private yards and semi public lawns and gardens as well as public trails and gardens in the front by the road access.

Internship: JBH Garden Installation and Design At the Bartlett Arboretum in Stamford, CT Internship Goals: The goal of this internship was to restore a native wildflower garden by replanting, and maintaining the garden throughout the summer. Additionally, I created a planting plan and a rendered base map for the Jane B Heisinger Memorial Garden and the Bartlett Arboretum in Stamford, CT. This internship helped solidify my plant knowledge and helped me to visualize how plants work with the landscape and the effects of using different plants to achieve a certain goal within the garden design.
