Architectural Exploration

Benjamin Navarro

Hello, I am a current Graduate student at California Baptist University, working towards a Master's degree in Architecture.
I am a collaborative leader and love creating for others. I am so passionate about architecture because I know we are able to transform the way people interact with and view the world. As designers, we are responsible for creating buildings for humans to thrive in. Having careful detail and intentional design helps the wellbeing and caring for others.

The Maggie Center, Newport Beach is a center where cancer patients, as well as their family and friends, can gather in order to process and feel all of the emotions that come with the diagnosis of Cancer. The center is a gateway to healing. The design is built upon an axis where the user may peel away from the main cooridor to regain courage. Then they can realign with the outside world and commune if they choose to.

By studying immediate surroundings the entrance, permeable walls, and views can be arranged in the floor plans as wells as materiality. These studies are crucial to understanding what the person may experience in the building.

The wall system allows heat gain to be less and views to the extierior to be maximum.

Redlands Theatre
Redlands, CA
40,000 S.F. Spring 2021
Redlands has so many layers in its history and current districts. This theatre aims to Filter the users senses slowly narrowing them into theatre. This is achieved with a layered system, beginnning with its narrow paths giving the user specific acces to the lobby. From there Light and sound is filtered through the plush plant mesh. This allows the person to view galleries which have polycarbonate paneling to allow sunlight in these specific locations. From the Lobby the person has three path options to choose from each leading to a different theatre. As you travel down any path, the deeper into earth you go therefore completely blocking your senses from the outside world and fully immersed in theatre.

Layering, Site Access, Internal Circulation

Upon studying the site, there are two major nodes. The site happens to be an intersection point where many pedestrians would cross by and possibly stop. this allows the site to be use not only when there are events but be inhabited most times of the year. The theatre becomes a community nest where people can come and go and be filled with inspiration as well.

The deeper the user goes into the theatre, the deeper they become inveloped by theatre. going underground where the theatre displays focuses all senses to what is happening on stage.
