Benicia Wine Tasting Event To Help Build Women’s Safe House

By Sarah Rohrs, photo by Joe Messina Most folks think of home when it comes to the holidays, but the Benicia Old Town Theatre Group is hoping they will think of Holmes, instead. The theater group’s current play is Ken Ludwig’s The Game’s Afoot or Holmes for the Holidays, a murder mystery whodunit with a twist. The show is set in December of 1936 with Broadway star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes. The mayhem starts when he invites fellow cast members to his castle and a guest is stabbed to death. In an isolated house of tricks and mirrors, the antics quickly turn both dangerous and hilarious. The show, directed

by ARTY award winner Clinton Vidal, runs through Nov. 12. Cast members are Paul Hughes, Maureen Coyne, Lauren Kelley, Scott Poitras, Kaemon Bonet, Callie Heyer, Siobhan O’Brien and Natasha Harris. Show times are 8pm Fridays and Saturdays and 2pm Sundays at the Historic BDES Hall, 140 West J St. in downtown Benicia.

The Benicia Old Town Theatre Group is a non-profit community theater group that dates back to 1964. Through the collaboration of a wide pool of talented volunteer actors, directors, producers and production crews, the group has produced nearly 100 plays. Numerous artists, businesses and community groups also lend their support. Monthly meetings and auditions are open to the public.

By Sarah Rohrs Benicia is known for its generosity for local organizations aiming to help and do good works in the community. Soroptimist International of Benicia is hoping that strong spirit of giving will infuse its first wine tasting event. Proceeds will go towards local scholarships and to establish a Women’s Resource Center and Safe House for domestic violence survivors. The event, Sip with Soroptimist: An Evening of Wine Tasting & Pairing comes on the heels of October’s designation as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It takes place 7-10pm, Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Benicia Clock Tower. “We were just looking to do something a little different. What a great event to come together with some music, food and wine tasting,” said Nancy Martinez, Benicia Main Street Program executive director and board member for the women’s social service club.

With a mission to improve the lives of women and girls, Soroptimist International of Benicia members want to shine a spotlight on domestic violence and its impact on women, children, families and the community. The club has a long-term goal of building a Women’s Resource

Center and Safe House in Benicia to support women and families as they start to rebuild their lives in the wake of domestic violence. “We’ve been working on this for a few years. There are Safe Houses in Vallejo and Fairfield but there is nothing available in Benicia. It’s a goal of ours. Eventually, we’d like to bring in the whole community to work on this,” Martinez said. The Safe House will be a combined effort of local churches, the City of Benicia and others in town.

Soroptimists are looking to work with SafeQuest Solano, a dual domestic violence and sexual assault emergency response agency that serves all of Solano County. Services include a 24hour crisis line and a state-certified emergency shelter.

Sip with Soroptimist promises to be a tasty affair, with an assortment of wine paired with plenty of gourmet hors d'oeuvres from local restaurants or other sources. The Henry Wine Group, located in the Benicia Business Park, will supply wine, and wineries from Napa and Solano counties also may step up and donate some bottles. Musical offerings to add a festive air to the event are still being mulled over, but Soroptimists are leaning towards playing CDs of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin favorites. One highlight of the evening will be a drawing for a $1,000 Raley’s gift card. Tickets are $10 each for the raffle. Advance ticket prices for Sip with the Soroptimist are $40 per adult or 2 for $75.

Tickets are $50 the day of the event. Designated drivers pay only $10 and receive bottled water and snacks. Tickets are available at eventbrite.com, or by calling 707.745.3551 or 707.746.1509. Martinez said she’s optimistic both the raffle and the event will be a big success, with at least 400 tickets sold. “The Benicia community always seems to come together for these special events,” she said.

By Adriene Rockwell, photo by Malcolm Slight Benicia’s sixth Poet Laureate, Johanna Ely, wrote her first poems in elementary school, inspired by the children’s book Hailstones and Halibut Bones. “I was just enchanted by that book, and wrote my first poem in 4th grade about the color green.

Then I wrote about my dog, and other little stories after that.”

She continued to spin her poetic yarns through high school, and while earning a B.A. in English from UC Berkeley.

But when she got married and had her son, her writing took an extended hiatus. She eventually went back to get her teaching credential and taught elementary school in Pittsburg for 25 years.

It wasn’t until she retired in 2013 that she got back to writing.

Now, she says, she writes every day.

Although a resident of Benicia for the past 30 years, it wasn’t until recent years that she became an active member of the Benicia First Tuesday Poetry Group. Since then, her work has been published in two anthologies, Across the Genres and A Word for All Seasons, and she has published a small book of poetry, titled Transformation. This year she was selected as the sixth Benicia Poet Laureate, an honor bestowed by the Benicia Public Library.

Johanna is passionate about bringing more poetry into the schools, and urges people not to be afraid of poetry. Among many activities, she is organizing an open house for the First Tuesday Poetry Group on November 29 at the Library. This September, she helped launch the First Sunday Poetry Series at Rosanna’s on First Street, featuring visiting poets and open mic readings.

She’s also the chairperson of the Love Poetry Contest, co-hosted by the Benicia Public Library, held at the Benicia Historical Museum. Anyone is welcome to submit up to three unpublished love poems. “Getting to read so many beautiful love poems is a wonderful part of my job,” she says.

The First Tuesday poets have partnered with the Plein Air Gallery to practice ekphrastic poetry, in a form that reflects and expands on works of art created by many of our local painters.

This year, the group is bringing the national Poetry Out Loud program into the schools, and will continue the Joel Fallon Scholarship program for youth to pursue their love of poetry.

Johanna’s poem entitled “Writing Poetry is Not Like Gardening,” says so much about her work. Here it is in part: “I don’t want to plant tiny seeds that fall out of shiny packets showing pretty pictures of daisies … I want to discover the prickly burr that sticks to my sock … Let me pull from my body what is untamed and unsettled, fling bright, bold words across the page, wildflowers for the taking.”

Social Activities, Camaraderie and More at

Benicia Veteran’s Hall

By Sarah Rohrs, photo by Jerry Bowles Taking a veteran to the hospital for chemotherapy is not in her job description as Benicia Veterans’ Memorial Hall facility manager, but Patty Brock often goes the extra mile to make a difference in the lives of veterans. She is part of the hall’s tight knit community where people take care of each other and help brighten days with friendship and camaraderie. “All of us do whatever we can for the veterans who come down here,” Brock said. The Vets’ Hall, at the top of First Street, is part meeting place, part social club and part event venue.

Many veterans find their way there by wandering in to the downstairs canteen and asking for help with benefits or other issues. Veterans who join one of the organizations have access to the canteen where they are welcome to recount their military experiences, watch a sports game, play pool, enjoy a weekly barbecue lunch and do community service projects. Veterans also gather at the hall on patriotic holidays for special programs. On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, an 11am program will include remarks by Naval Chief John Gordon, who fought in World War II’s Battle of Guadalcanal. A barbecue follows and the public is welcome to attend.

Benicia veterans groups and three auxiliaries use a portion of the hall for regular meetings. Those groups include Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3928, American Legion Post 101, plus local chapters of the VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of American Legion. Currently, about 500 Benicia veterans belong to these groups, including several World War II veterans, all of whom are now in their

90s, local veterans said. Benicia veterans also fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars, the Gulf War and the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

Solano County has an estimated 40,000 veterans. Meanwhile, the upstairs portions of the hall can be rented out for weddings, parties and other functions. Any veteran can attend patriotic holiday programs or go in and get information about local vet groups.

The Benicia Vets’ Hall is not a Veterans’ Administration building and is not a place for veterans to apply for and receive services.

However, some veterans can get help with forms and information on where to go for help, said Ted Puntillo, county Director of Veteran’s Services. Occasionally, Puntillo will show up there himself to help, but he mainly works out of the Fairfield office, which assists more than 50 veterans per day. Veterans of current wars have a big need for housing, education, health care and employment. Older veterans, at times, also seek help. Puntilllo said some don’t realize they need help with stress and depression until after they have retired and they have more time on their hands.

A part of Benicia’s fabric since the late 1940s, the building is owned by Solano County. By law, each county must provide dedicated veterans’ memorial halls. However, local veteran’s groups are responsible for paying utilities and maintaining the building.

Hall rental helps raise money for ongoing maintenance and bills. A large renovation completed in March of 2013 upgraded the building considerably. The project cost $2,347,000, and funds came from three primary sources, including $147,000 in federal funds and $2.2 million

Hall improvements consisted of foundation waterproofing, drainage work and electrical upgrades. The building also got an elevator to make it accessible to the handicapped, plus new walkways, bathrooms, stairs, a heating and cooling system, lighting, windows, cabinetry, and various interior and exterior finishes. Most recently, outdoor white lights were strung in the trees, beautifying the building and the street. The remaining items that predated the renovations tie the building to its proud past: an antique canon dating back to the Spanish American war and a monument of mosaic memorials to honor veterans of World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and all other wars. Puntillo said the vet’s hall is a symbol of remembrance, a sign of community recognition and a source of pride for veterans.

The photograph here certainly qualifies in that regard. When I came across this picture, I felt sadness and anger, taking exception especially to the celebratory aspect of the postures of the soldiers and also to the display of those magnificent hawk carcasses ignobly draped upside down, wings outspread across the Hummer, adding to the tragedy of their extinction. Notes attached to the accession record recount the story: “In November of 1943, Arsenal commander Colonel Paul Rutten grew tired of hearing complaints about Arsenal-based hawks killing chickens and other small domestic animals in the local community. He requested Sargent Woodrow and Corporal Brown to carefully thin out the hawk population using short-range carbine rifles;” which “kill” was no doubt broadcast triumphantly to Benicia residents. Since 1972, through an amendment to the 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act, all raptors or “birds of prey” (including hawks, eagles, ospreys, falcons, kites, owls, and vultures) are strictly protected, (unless excepted through special permits from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), attracting penalties reaching up to $15,000 per bird and six months imprisonment for common violations. The sale or barter of migratory birds is a felony with penalties of up to $500,000! None of us want our pets or livestock harmed—finding a balance between the needs of human beings and other animals can be difficult, but without this kind of regulatory action, a number of these species would be on the verge of extinction or extinct already. Sometimes it is possible to take comfort from history by noting the positive changes that can result from applied research, educational outreach, and concerned citizens taking action through legislation.

Location, location, location. In Benicia and Solano County, the real estate mantra applies to houses, but also to the hills, fields, and where land meets water—these areas teem with birds and other wildlife. The marshes, sloughs, waterways and rolling landscape draw many types of winged creatures, from great blue herons and pelicans at the

waterfront to bald eagles at Lake Herman. Bird populations are especially plentiful in fall and winter months as scores of ducks, geese, cedar waxwings and other birds stop over to feed and rest while migrating south on the Pacific Flyway, a kind of highway for birds. For bird watchers like Monique Liguori of the Suisun Wildlife Center, Solano is prime bird real estate. “It’s a very diverse area with lots of different habitats. We’re like a microcosm of California here. We have everything except the desert,” she said. Trails, parks and preserves abound for bird watching, a fast-growing hobby for all members of the family, she added.

The Pacific Flyway is a major north-south migratory route, extending from Alaska to Patagonia, that follows food sources and leads to breeding grounds and overwintering sites. In the midst of long journeys, birds often stop along the way to feed and rest before taking to the skies again. The Bay Area is the largest stopover along the route, said Vallejo’s Myrna Hayes, founder and organizer of the Pacific Flyway Festival, which annually celebrates the rich winter bird life of the bay. The festival, centered on Mare Island, takes place Feb. 10-12, 2017, and includes opportunities to watch and learn about birds in San Pablo Bay, the Mare Island Channel, American Canyon marshes, Skaggs Island, the Napa River and other areas.

With an art show, talks and a wildlife demonstration, the festival, in a way, serves as a temporary environmental education center, Hayes said.

Birds take wing in Benicia and Vallejo partly due to the close proximity to protected marshes and wetlands. Birds can be spotted in the brackish marshes of Southampton Bay, the wetlands of White’s Slough in Vallejo and along waterfronts. Vallejo birder Robin Leong, of the Napa Solano Audubon Society, said even spots close to people draw birds and many bird lovers take to waterways and hills with binoculars in hand to spot them. He cited the recent nesting of a black oystercatcher on a small island at the end of First Street. The nesting turned out to be unsuccessful but was exciting nonetheless for those who keep a close eye on bird activity. “It’s very, very unusual that the bird nested there,” Leong said.

West of Vallejo, people often see statuesque snowy white egrets or flocks of pelicans as they drive along Highway 37, which cuts through protected areas in the Napa-Sonoma Marshes Wildlife Area, the San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge and its coveted marshes. Once fringed with marshes, San Francisco Bay shores

are now mostly paved and developed, said Don Brubaker, wildlife refuge manager. West of Vallejo, the refuge becomes home to ducks, sand pipers, black necked stilts and avocets during fall and winter months. “If you could take a time machine back 150 years you would see ducks, geese and other shorebirds crisscrossing in multiple layers daily. The bird life at that time must have been just an extraordinary thing to see,” Brubaker said.

Birds also flock to Suisun Marsh east of Benicia—the largest contiguous estuarine marsh in the United States. Within the 8,600-acre haven are more than 200 bird species, including ducks, geese and scaups, red-winged black birds, western meadow larks and marsh wrens. On Grizzly Island, some birds take up permanent residence, such as egrets and herons, while others pass through after feeding and resting. Liguori is always looking for good birding spots. Besides the marshes and wetlands, wooded areas in the hills have many hawks, kestrels, golden eagles and peregrine falcons, while grasslands have quail and songbirds, among many other species. Benicia’s waterfront, parks and backyard gardens are often visited by migrating birds, such as colorful Cedar Waxwings, that

Leong said cedar waxwings also favor Benicia City Cemetery and the Benicia Arsenal Post Cemetery. Benicia State Recreation Area is still a good spot for birds, but feral and abandoned cats, plus house cats from nearby Glen Cove homes are killing them. A rare subspecies of the song sparrow that lives only in bay marshes relies on that park and other nearby marsh areas, he said.

Canadian geese are perhaps the biggest fans of Benicia’s waterfront parks, though they are not always welcome. Rick Knight, Benicia Parks & Building Maintenance Superintendent, said the city doesn’t try to manage the geese, but staff have tried to discourage them with fake coyotes and also by using “goose busters,” which make noises that irritate the birds. The techniques have been mildly successful, though the expensive coyote figures were stolen. Posted signs strongly discourage people from feeding the geese. Knight said such feeding can result in them staying all year, disturbing their migration pattern, and may even harm them.

Whether it’s geese, a soaring hawk or flocks of white pelicans, seeing them and learning about their environment is a good first step help protect them, Liguori said, advising people to make bird watching a fun fall and winter adventure.

By Beth Steinmann Taking pictures of one’s food and posting them on social media, a phenomenon affectionately known as “foodstagramming,” has, in recent years, become both a wildly popular and much maligned pastime available to anyone with a smart phone and the Instagram or Facebook App. Perhaps one appeal is that, with the aforementioned prerequisites in place, it’s a game anyone can play. Anyone can upload their “food selfies,” hashtag them and enter them into the ever-expanding data stream of searchable terms, to garner much coveted “likes” across social media platforms by friends and strangers around the world.

Food Selfies Out of Control?

For many professionals in the food or photography realms, food selfies have become marketing cornerstones. From chefs to food critics to cookbook creators to food bloggers, culling a large social media following can be used to create more real-world gravitas. Amateur foodstagrammers may also attempt to build popularity through their photos and break into the professional realm.

Reactions to food selfies run the gamut, but everyone seems to have an opinion, and hundreds of Internet articles pick at the complex set of social issues at play— why are people so obsessed with posting photos of their food? Has humanity gone off the deep end? In 2013, one Canadian psychologist made waves online by suggesting that obsessive foodstagrammers may not have healthy relationships with their food. She went so far as to say that it may point to signs of mental illness.

According to Susan Albers, Psy.D., while some people may indeed be posting as a conscious or unconscious call for help navigating food relationships, there are many other complex, overlapping motivations. “Wanting people to truly know you may be your motivation for keeping a daily food journal on your Facebook page or uploading the occasional photo of your meals. Documenting what you eat tells your friends a lot about who you are—your habits, personality, preferences and culinary weaknesses,” she writes in an article on psychologytoday.com.

Other signals, she writes, may include “look at how good I am” (I’m eating healthy!), “look at how bad I am” (it’s confession time!) and “can you believe I ate this?” (check out this weird, exotic food!). What all of these motivations have in common is a desire for sharing and interactivity. While such desires are endogenous to human nature, how we seek to fulfill them has changed with time and societal structure, especially as we interact more online.

Some people may be more likely to post photos of meals they made themselves (what foodie doesn’t feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when a new dish turns out perfect?), while others prefer to share their dining-out experiences with the virtual world.

The restaurant industry is divided on the subject. Jesse Mathewson, sous chef at Christie Hill in Tahoe City, says some restaurants may shun foodstagrammers for the following reasons: Flash photography, he says, can disrupt other diners. Also, when people see photos of a restaurant’s food online, it may discourage them from actually taking the time to come and try it themselves (been online, seen that!). In addition, “some chefs may feel threatened that people will copy their work if they see photos of it circulating.” Mathewson’s take, however, is a more positive one. “I encourage people to take photos because it promotes food creativity. Also, they’re great for keeping memories—it’s like commemorating someone’s art.” Indeed, photos may help promote a chef’s work as well as give the restaurant exposure— it can be free advertising, depending on the photographer’s commentary.

One of the most humorous aspects of foodstagramming is the staging process. Sure, that food on your plate looks good and appetizing in person, but the camera isn’t quite so forgiving. Have you ever found yourself rearranging food on the plate, changing the lighting or strategically moving it around the room to get a good background (c’mon, admit it)?

Perhaps our obsession with foodstagramming is just an extension of how social media plays on our obsessive natures in general. The old adage, “everything in moderation” applies well here. If you can’t eat a meal without taking a picture of it first, well, you may have a problem. One thing is clear though—this is more than just a passing trend, and one can only imagine how it will continue to evolve. Whatever you do, don’t Google image search “pictures of people taking pictures of their food” (really though, please do, it’s hilarious).

Humble Grilled Cheese

for a Midweek Meal What’s

not to love about savory, melted cheese, sandwiched between two slices of fried bread? Probably the most versatile sandwich in the world, the humble grilled cheese with basic cheddar on white is just as welcome on a chilly, fall evening, as a more grown-up version of the hearty sandwich with added embellishments. Served with a steaming bowl of tomato soup (for dipping of course, harkening back to the childhood favorite), this quick and easy combo is transformed into the ultimate comfort meal. Serve with a small salad for a perfect mid-week dinner.

2 slices 9-grain/multigrain seeded bread 2 tbsp. melted unsalted butter, or 1 tbsp. mayonnaise Sliced Gruyère cheese, about 3 oz. at room temperature Thinly sliced, sharp orange cheddar, about 3 oz. at room temperature Brush the melted butter or mayonnaise evenly on the “outsides” of the bread. Place the buttered side down in a frying pan over medium low heat. Place the Gruyere on the “inside” slice of bread and add the cheddar. Add the top piece of bread with butter or mayonnaise side up for about 3-5 minutes, watching that the bread doesn’t burn.

When the bottom is golden brown, flip it with a spatula so the other side cooks until it’s golden brown, another 3-5 minutes. Remove the sandwich to a clean cutting board and let rest for a minute or two.

Slice diagonally and serve with tomato soup.

Some people like using mayonnaise instead of butter for easier browning. Try this basic, but robust recipe for a tasty grilled cheese sandwich using Gruyere for it’s nutty flavor and perfect melting potential, or build your own culinary creation with interesting additions. Experiment with different cheese combinations using creamy goat, Havarti, jack, fresh mozzarella and others.

This is one fun sandwich you can customize in whatever way will tantalize your taste buds.

St. Dominic School Interview with

Katie Perata

By Sue Sumner Moore Photo by Malcolm Slight For the principal at St. Dominic School, education is much more than reading, writing and ’rithmetic.

“I think it’s better to have a student who is a good person and treats others with respect than to have a student who is super-smart and rude to people,” says Katie Perata, now in her third year as head of Benicia’s Catholic school.

The school incorporates values and community building into its curriculum for 315 students in pre-K through eighth grade.

Students recite a Respect for All pledge each Monday and focus on an aspect of faith in action each month. Each student is part of a group with students from every grade who gather for special activity days.

Ms. Perata attended Holy Spirit School in Fairfield before going to Vacaville High School.

She realized she wanted to become a teacher when she started college at Arizona State.

Her passion for education is evident as she talks about curriculum that inspires students to learn and lead. Her infectious laugh and classroom voice fill her office, which is also home to picture books and professional volumes, boxes of chocolate left over from a school fundraiser, and her neon orange crossing guard vest.

Ms. Perata taught middle schoolers at Queen of All Saints School in Concord for six years.

She earned her administrative credential and a master’s degree from St. Mary’s College before becoming St. Dominic’s principal. The Vacaville resident leads a staff of about 40.

“I’m continuing to learn so much from the staff here. I inherited them as part of the school, and they are very dedicated,” says Ms. Perata, 32. “They are the heartbeat of the school.”

Why did you make the change from teacher to principal?

Two or three years into teaching at All Saints, the fifth grade teacher there said, “Let’s go get our administrative credentials.” I thought I might want to go into administration later, so I just said yes. I’m still saying yes to everything. …

I was fresh out (of St. Mary’s College) when they wanted to interview me here. I loved teaching and I was still wondering “Am I ready to be a principal?” I thought I’d interview so I’d know what they were looking for, how to prepare for future interviews. I think I got the job because I’m so honest about what I think about education, what I think about being a principal. I really, absolutely love my job.

What are the differences between public and Catholic education?

I think the biggest difference is that in Catholic school, your first priority is teaching your faith. In public school, the priority is to teach academic excellence. Academic excellence is still important to us, but we want children to know they are valued and to value others.

By teaching our faith, we’re teaching kids how to lead, how to serve, how to be good stewards of the earth, to be aware of global injustices and how we can serve those in need. We want them to be courageous. We want them to be sharing their faith, too.

We also teach them that God is forgiving. I love to nurture that in kids. It’s so important for kids to know that failing is OK. You ask forgiveness, you learn from the mistake, and you grow from it.

How does the staff teach faith to children?

We have religion class every day and everyone goes to Mass once a week. The entire school goes to Mass together once a month. As part of the all-school Mass, kids are given the opportunity to read and sing and lead.

But teaching the faith is not just about having religion classes. It’s about sharing food with someone who forgot their lunch or having an eighth-grader help a kindergartner tie his shoes.

What’s your favorite part about being principal?

My favorite part of the day is walking around and talking to the kids. I like seeing what they’re learning and how they’re learning it. I love to see how teachers are teaching.

I keep a pair of Crocs in my office for that. Sometimes when I’m wearing flats I’ll play basketball.

I want students to see me as a regular person. I don’t want them to think they only see me when they’re in trouble. I want them to know that I’m here to care for you, I’m here to love you, and I’m here to support you.

The first thing I learned as a principal is you can’t make everybody happy. If I’m doing what I think is right, what I think is fair, and what’s in the best interest of the kids, then I’m doing what I should.

One of my high school English teachers, Mr. Knabe.

He had a very gentle disposition. The louder we got, the quieter he got. You really had to be listening. He was inspirational to a young person like me who loved reading.

What do you read?

I read a lot and I read everything. I don’t have a favorite genre. I love mysteries, thrillers, dramas, and I will read and re-read the Harry Potter series. Now I read a lot of professional development books as well.

What do you do to relax?

I love anything outdoors. I like to hike and I love being on the water. I like wakeboarding, water skiing. I dabble in CrossFit a bit.

I do have a significant other and we spend a lot of time together. I spent a lot of time with my family also.

What’s next for St. Dominic School?

We definitely need some facility improvements since our facility was built in 1961. We want to make Catholic education affordable for all, so we’re looking at avenues to make that happen.

I want to keep a rigorous and relevant curriculum that’s current so kids will be career-and college-ready. We have an open house coming up on Jan. 29 so people can see student projects, visit classrooms and learn more.

What’s next for you?

I’m starting a doctorate degree program in December. I don’t know where I’m going next, but I hope I’m here for a long time. I can’t imagine being anywhere else.

Collaboration & Creativity Inspires Vision Statement Guest Column by Charles F. Young, Ed.D., Superintendent, Benicia USD Photos: Benicia High School, by Malcolm Slight Setting the Course Successful, high achieving school districts have several features in common, chief among them a compelling vision, a set of shared beliefs reflecting the highest hopes for students and staff, and a clear description of the qualities and characteristics of its graduates.

During the 2015-16 school year, we initiated a process to investigate, explore and research a set of guiding principles that would aid us in our ongoing effort to provide an outstanding educational experience for all of our students. A key feature of this process included seeking feedback from the parent community and staff. This exciting effort led to our new board-adopted vision statement, organizational beliefs and desired characteristics of a Benicia Unified School District graduate.

Public Process To begin the process, community members and staff were asked three questions: What beliefs should we share as a school district regarding how we function on behalf of our students? What characteristics are essential for our students to possess upon graduation? What ideas should be evident in our vision statement? (Vision statement: a picture of a compelling, desired future state.)

We received an abundance of thoughtful and creative ideas. The next step included grouping the ideas into patterns of thought and themes. To aid us in this effort, we leaned on research, workforce trends, expectations from universities, experience and common sense. We then asked a subcommittee of parents from our Local Control Accountability Development Team to help draft the set of principles. This group was intelligent, enthusiastic and dedicated to the task. They are to be commended for doing an excellent job!

Board Approval Once we crafted a rough draft, it was shared, revised and discussed in detail with staff and the School Board, whereupon it was approved at a June Board meeting. While it is a challenge to hit the sweet spot with this kind of work, we believe we developed language that will help guide our work in ways that are both inspiring and actionable. These guiding principles will shape our planning efforts as we develop key initiatives, goals, actions and metrics outlined in our LCAP, which also functions as our District strategic plan. The guiding principles are as follows: Vision: BUSD—Where all students achieve at their highest potential in an engaging, inspiring and challenging learning environment.

Bay Area Science Festival

11/1-11/5 Locations around the Bay Area Created by the Bay Area’s scientific, cultural, and educational institutions, the 6th annual Bay Area Science Festival returns October 27th – November 5th 2016. The Science & Health Education Partnership (SEP) at UCSF produces the festival alongside a core group of science institutions. The festival will provide a wide range of science & technology activities – lectures, debates, exhibitions, concerts, plays, workshops, etc. at a variety of locations throughout the Bay Area.

Jack London Classic Film Festival

Zoppè Family Circus

The San Rafael 37th Annual Parade of Lights and Winter Wonderland

11/25, 12pm-8pm; 11/26, 9am-12pm 4th Street, Downtown San Rafael In its 37th year, this event features a Holiday Marketplace, starting Friday at noon, with arts and crafts, live entertainment, children’s activities, free snow sledding, and one of the largest Holiday Parades in the Bay Area. Following the Parade, Santa, Ms. Claus and other costumed characters arrive with the Mayor of San Rafael to the center of town in the City Plaza to light the official Holiday Tree. Saturday features snow and kids’ activities.
