I’m currently studying BSc Product Design at Nottingham Trent university.

I have been captivated by design my entire life, having the freedom to invent, and indulge in my creativity is immensely fulfilling.

Whether it be using basic hand tools or advanced machinery my childhood spent experimenting and tinkering in my workshop at home has provided me with thorough experience of a plethora of creative technical skills, allowing me to bring my ideas to life.

Growing up in the heart of The Lake District has hugely influenced my hobbies and interests; it introduced me to the diversity and possibilities of mountain sports giving me the opportunity to pursue obscure sports like ice climbing, kite skiing and fell running. Fusing my passion of being amongst mountains with my motives to design is what excites me most.

CIRQUE Ultralightweight titanium camping stove designed for solid fuel tablets.

*Extra-curricular Project

01/04 Ultralight Camping Stove: The stove weighs a mere 29 grams due to a lightweight titanium design. The lightest stoves on the market weigh around 70 grams or more. This stove takes solid fuel tablets over other methods saving even more weight, as the exact amount of fuel can be taken compared to a whole gas/liquid fuel cannister.

The three-legged design folds from a stable base for a pan to a small and handy package of only 100x50x30mm.

Branding: “CIRQUE” is the brand that I have constructed to fit the design of the ultralight camping stove. A Cirque “a bowl-shaped, steep-walled mountain basin carved by glaciation, often containing a small, round lake” is a term familiar and relatable to most of those who spend time in the mountains. It is simple yet identifiable as a word and brand.

User Research: To design a product well, the designer must climb into the skin of the user. Research was done into the different aspects of their life to understand how the risk of catching the virus could be released. Since the brief mentions commuting, a breakdown of the typical day is a crucial insight.

Sketch Development: After Conducting a survey, it was established that the biggest concern to commuters was touching common surfaces. Carrying a bottle of hand sanitiser has become an essential for most people to solve this issue however, people often become complacent or forget to use it. The idea behind this concept was to reinvent the hand sanitiser bottle.

02/04 Technical Detailing: The Product is made from 4 individual parts. The body is fabricated from sheet Aluminium grade 6061.

This has excellent weldability and is often supplied in sheets.

Utilises a roller ball similar to that of a roll on deodorant. The design allows hand sanitiser to be applied with one.

Marketing: This screen shot shows how the finished product could look in place on Dyson’s website. The design would retail for about £45 as it is a fairly premium product that fits in with Dyson’s product line. I chose “Dyson Cleanse” as the product name to remain similar to other products under the brand name.

03/04 User Persona: The target user that I chose to design for was young families living in urban areas. This market often wants to educate their children about nature but often find it difficult to connect living in a built up area.

Sketching: To begin, I started with a range of ideas from hedge hog shelters to insect hotels. In the end I decided to develop a bee hive that was specifically for solitary bees due to the previous information.

To develop this design I incorporated aspects of other concepts like the window in the birdhouse and the flat pack assembly of the hedgehog shelter shown above.

Card Modelling: The three faces shown in the model are a housing for the tubular structure which could be made from lengths of bamboo. The model was placed in context to give an idea of scale and allowed for further developments to be made. The design is flat pack and includes a transparent screen on the rear to allow anyone inside to observe.

Suction Cup: Allow the product to be stuck to the outside of a window.

Acrylic Window: User can observe the nesting bees and provides shelter.

Recycled HDPE housing: Provides excellent protection from the elements for the bees whilst being made from recycled plastics.

Interlocking Slot Joint: Allows the product to be flat-packed and assembly can be a form of entertainment for children.

Lengths of Bamboo: Ideal nesting environment for solitary bees. Are sustainable and biodegradable.

04/04 The Problem: Mental Health problems are becoming more common in today’s society; with the majority of the population around the world feeling the negative consequences of the current pandemic and a largely online way of living and working many people are left with declining states of mental health. “POD” aims to reduce and help prevent mental health issues by creating a calming and stress free environment.

Sketching: After redefining the brief to focus on how plants and green space can help mental health, some further concepts were brought to the table. With further development, a final design was generated. (lower right image)

This is a modular design that utilises technology to check the plants health and provide the user with a range of ambient lightings.

What is POD? “POD” is a modular smart terrarium with app connectivity, ambient lighting and soil moisture sensors.

It has been shown through research that having plants in the house can relieve mental health problems.

Besides the positive association that we have with plants, POD is a responsibility for the owner; something to care of.

Modelling: I made these models using upturned glass storage jars. In the lid, polystyrene was placed and plants embedded into it to position them with soil to disguised it. A rolled up plastic wallet with a torch inside acted as the light tube.

Packaging: Coco brick (dried soil) (A) serves not only as the plant’s medium to grow in but also as protection during the pod’s packaged life. A convenient handle (B) ensures the pod is carried correctly. The rest of the packaging is biodegradable and sustainable.It was important that the full package was environmentally friendly to us.

04/04 Instructuctions by Ben Daymond

POD owners can keep adding to their collection due to its modular stacking design. Magnetic electrical contacts on the base and roof of each pod means that no wires are necessary to connect multiple Pods.

Packaging: Within the packaging, the user gets an instruction booklet showing them how to set up their Pod. Once water is added to the coco soil, it is absorbed and the soil expands as it gains moisture. The seeds are provided with the pod and can be chosen individually as shown on the next page.

App: An app interface was developed in similar keeping with the rest of the products design ethos. We used dark hues contrasted against vibrant colours of nature.

Using the app, the user can alter lighting and recieve notifications when the plants need water.

Website: On the left shows the website where users can purchase the pods and the plants.

The larger one known as “Sprout” would retail for about £50 where as “Seed” the smaller one retails for about £35.
