Bill loves the Bays Community

Barbara and Bill Ellis.

Bill Ellis grew up in Browns Bay and has spent his entire life involved in the community. In 1968 he suffered a brain injury from a serious car accident. This led to his involvement with the Brain Injury Association. He is married to Barbara and together they gradually got involved in many community groups, including the Torbay Historical Society (Vaughan Homestead), the East Coast Bays Community Project and Torbay Community Association. Along with this Bill is an experienced photographer, taking photos when requested by many local groups and also for the Torbay Newsletter for more than 20 years. Bill answers a few questions this month from Courtney Bennett about being part of the Bays community.

COURTNEY BENNETT: How did you get involved in community work?

BILL ELLIS: After my accident, I took up photography as part of my rehabilitation. I soon realised that many things were changing – disappearing. This led to the production of three books of photos, and involvement in many societies and helping with events.

CB: What does a typical day look like for you?

BE: There is no typical day. That’s why we keep a diary. We attend meetings and help at community events and take photos, while trying to keep up with house, car and garden maintenance.

CB: You have pretty much always been involved in the community?

BE: My family instilled in me that community was the way of life from a young age. We knew all our neighbours and all worked together through church and other groups. When we finished our so called ‘working life’ (mechanic and a teacher) it was a natural thing to get involved in community, as our families had been.

CB: What are you most looking forward to about the upcoming warmer months?

BE: Attending and helping at many community events, meeting more people and taking more photos at events and around the district for historical purposes.

CB: What makes a good community to you?

BE: Working together. Getting to know your neighbourhood.

Saying ‘hello’ to those you see on the street. Caring

especially for the elderly and disabled. There are groups in this area which are caring for those in need. We find people to be very friendly here.

CB: What has been your proudest moment when it comes to your community work or involvement?

BE: One of our proudest moments was when the Vaughan Homestead at Long Bay was opened 20 years ago. The Torbay Historical Society, of which we are a part of, had spent several years saving it and restoring it to its present state. We feel proud to be able to entertain visitors there.

CB: What community groups or charitable organisations do you admire and why?

BE: ‘Brain Injury Association’ because they have brought about public awareness of brain injury and helped sufferers and their families. SPCA because they help animals who have no voice.

CB: What do you like most about living in the Bays?

BE: There are still areas of natural environment and beauty.

Many people are passionate about keeping it so. ‘Capturing the moment’ is a photographer’s delight.

CB: Anything you feel we could better as a community?

BE: It is up to individuals to get involved. When you see something that needs doing, approach the appropriate authority.

CB: In my next life, I am going to come back as…

Hi Everyone Welcome to our ‘Spring’ issue of your local magazine. It seems ages since I did the last column, but that’s probably because we have had lots to do organising promotions and events for the busy summer season. Here’s an update of events as I see it in the beautiful ‘bays’.

$4000 Travel Promotion Winner Our biggest ever prize to celebrate the addition of all the extra business from Beach Rd, Anzac and Bute Rd’s (past our old Glen Rd boundary), was really well supported with over 7,500 entries.

However, there could only be one winner and that person was: Pam McGovern of Browns Bay whose winning entry was made at Whitcoulls. Congratulations Pam – you will be whisking away on your holiday after working out your itinerary with Liz and her team at HelloWorld, Browns Bay. Thanks also to our other sponsors, New World and Browns Bay Liquor Centre Blokes In The Plaza Our 1st Father’s Day event in Browns Bay in years and an awesome day. The Dad’s were a bit shy when it came to the competition we had organised, but we did get a WINNER: Mike Shaw was our inaugural recipient of ‘The Bays Top Dad Award’.

To win it Mike had to: 1. build a compost bin (supplied by Mitre 10 Browns Bay) 2. row 500 metres (gear by Snap Fitness), 3. cook the perfect pancake (ingredients from New World, Browns Bay) 4. and change a wheel (car from Harcourts Cooper & Co).

With food vendors, classic and performance cars, and musicians playing all dad’s favourites, an enjoyable day was had by all. Next year we will be back with an even bigger event. Ladies – please coerce your men to enter next years event and come and cheer them along!

Penguinos Ice Cream Palour collects National Ice Cream Awards Browns Bay’s Ice Cream icon, Penguino’s, picked up two Gold and two Silver medals at this year’s 2016 NZ Ice Cream Awards. This is the 20th Year of the awards and is judged at the Food Innovation Centre Auckland. There are eight Judges with 334 entries. Points are awarded on a variety of factors. Penguino entered five flavours and came away with: Two Gold Awards for their: Banana, Hazlenut Two Silver Awards for their: Strawberry sorbet, Lemon cake The presentation awards were held at the Crowne Plaza with one of the biggest turn outs in the awards history.

I’ve always thought their ice creams flavours were great. These awards just confirm how great they are! Congratulations to Malcolm, Anne and their wonderful team of local youth for your fantastic results – we’ll all be coming to the Plaza over the hot summer months to sample your great products.

The best thing about these ice creams is that they are made in-store by Malcolm. Every morning he arrives early and makes up batch after batch of beautiful Penguino’s Ice Cream – so you know it’s absolutely fresh.

Christmas Tree Lighting Event This year we are changing the event to Saturday so that we can bring you an even better event. It will be held on: Saturday 5th November, Midday to 7.00pm We’ll have music, entertainment and food vendors in the Plaza right up until one lucky local child gets the thrill of switching on the lights of our Giant Christmas Tree, located in the centre of the Plaza. Put the date in your calender now!

Christmas Parade and Beach Party Our annual Christmas Parade, apparently the 2nd largest in Auckland, will be held on Saturday, 3rd December. The day will be a fun day for all with music, entertainment and some great food vendors from late morning, the parade starting at 5.00pm and as usual, a party on our magnificent beachfront once the parade has finished. A K Samba will be one of the acts for the day so put this date in your diary also!

Out & About in the Bays All the fun of the fair at Rangitoto Kindergarten Rangitoto Kindergarten’s 2016 annual fair was one to remember as children enjoyed the various activities with friends and family. All enjoyed the treasure hunt, the spin the wheel raffle, the frozen tent, sausage sizzle, cake stalls and so much more.

“It's just such a great event to come to", said one of the local mums and it certainly seemed like all the local community participate in this event including the fire brigade and police, letting children see one of their favourite action toys – the fire truck or police car – up close!

Out & About in the Bays Browns Bay School’s production a hit!

Browns Bay School’s recent production titled ‘RED' was the talk of the Bays. Held over three nights, 350 children were part of the production. The production was created by Karen Warren and Carrie Jackson, both teachers of the school.

The audience were captivated as the various characters tried to decide what to do with a vacant piece of land and ended up having a dance competition to see which group would claim the prize of determining the lands future. Children dressed up for the parts as can be seen in these photographs captured by the Browns Bay Magazine camera.

Feature: Okura Estuary Marine Reserve

Community Comes Together To Protect Okura Estuary Marine Reserve

The Okura Estuary Marine Reserve is under threat from intensive housing development. The Long Bay Great Park Society is opposing the development in a looming court battle. A nationwide funding campaign has been launched to raise funds to help the Society win this battle.

In August, Auckland Councillors voted against moving the rural urban boundary to allow housing development adjacent to the Okura Estuary Marine Reserve. But just when we all thought the Okura Estuary was saved from destruction by urban development, the developer has struck back by legally appealing the Auckland Council’s decision not to allow intensive housing near the estuary.

To protect all that is special about the estuary and surrounding area, the Long Bay-Okura Great Part Society must go to the Environment Court to challenge the developer’s plans. It is seeking the help of the Auckland-wide community to do this.

As part of the Auckland Unitary Plan process, a panel appointed

by Government heard evidence from developers wanting the land to be developed and from submitters opposed to development. The Society and others were involved throughout, fighting to preserve the estuary and its environment. The Council voted, and the Great Park Society had won.

unique in New Zealand. It is bordered on the northern side by the Okura Bush Scenic Reserve, a beautiful stand of native bush with kauri and puriri trees several hundreds of years old. Over 70,000 visitors enjoy the bush walk running between Redvale and Stillwater each year.

The Long Bay Regional Park with its magnificent views adjoins the eastern side of the estuary, with 1.4 million visitors each year.

The estuary is home for a variety of endangered native shore birds like the Variable Oyster Catcher and is the summer feeding area for migratory birds such as godwits. The critically endangered New Zealand dotterel nests on the sandy spits near the Okura walkway.

The Okura Estuary forms part of the Long Bay Marine Reserve and is a vital environment for regenerating marine life. Pods of Orca and dolphins are seen in the mouth of the estuary many times each year.

Developers plan to build between 700 – 1000 houses on 150 hectares of land on the south eastern edge of the estuary. Such development will put the fragile estuary environment, its rich marine and birdlife at risk as well as the recreational enjoyment of visitors.

Campbells Bay Tennis Centre, February 24th!

Rotary Browns Bay is holding it’s second Jumbo Tennis Tournament at Campbells Bay Tennis Centre next February 24th and already there is considerable interest from local businesses for participation.

This year there were 12 teams involved in a very entertaining afternoon who challenged to be Jumbo Champions of the North Shore.

The whole idea originated with Rotary Wellington some 10 years ago and already many charities have benefitted from the expansion down south.

In April this year Ronald McDonald House and the Auckland City Mission received $3,000 each from the tournament with the Browns Bay Unique Language School international team winning the major prize and Merv Huxford and his Orewa Taxation team representing Hibiscus Hockey taking the overall team prize.

LONG BAY OKURA GREAT PARK SOCIETY

Community support is urgently required to save the Okura Estuary marine reserve.

This is very much a classic David versus Goliath tale. The Great Park Society and other related community groups have victoriously fought these one-sided battles to preserve this unique area for decades.

The Society urgently needs community support to raise the funds needed for specialist and legal representation to protect Okura for future generations.

“Famous As” Rangitoto Kindergarten’s annual 'Famous As Fair', held on Saturday September 3rd at the kindergarten premises in Mairangi Bay was an outstanding success and was a true celebration of both the kindergarten and the local community. The kindergarten’s fair gained its 'Famous As' name recently after holding over 25 years of kindergarten fairs!

The fair is a traditional one with the popular stalls and activities such as cakes, toys, clothing, sweets, books, face-painting, a coconut shy, bouncy castle, haunted house, treasure hunt, pony rides and a live auction.

The children enthusiastically contributed by creating their own 'Made By Us’ stall. As each day drew closer the excitement built (and the noise levels of excited children grew!).

Plans for the fundraised money include the development of a community garden and will also go towards our long term goal of creating a flexible area for large art/dance/creative space along with a family/whanāu room.

What makes the day so special is not only the success of the funds raised, but the strong connections with families both present and past. One of the highlights for the teachers is to see so many families come back year after year.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to the Rangitoto Kindergarten 2016 Committee for their tireless work in organising the fair and to all the amazing businesses that contributed to the fair’s success.

Stop for a moment and reflect on what your IDEAL life would look, feel and even sound. What kind of home do you want to live in? What sort of job would excite you? What about your ideal partner? Family, holiday, car, your health... (You get the idea).

A brilliant way to become clear on what you want for your future is to create a Vision Board. Cut out pictures that represent your absolute ideal and paste them onto a large piece of card. Be specific. Find pictures that show what you want, how you want to feel, what you want to do. Include pictures that pull at your soul, inspire and excite you. As you sift and page through magazines focusing on your ideal, you get clearer of what you want, even if you didn’t know before.

I make a point of making a new one each year. I love looking back over previous ones and get blown away by how much actually comes to fruition. It doesn’t matter how it works… it just does.

Unless you have a clear vision, it can be easy for life to tick along in a fog. It’s like driving a car with no clear destination…you waste time and fuel drifting around aimlessly.

I invite you to give this project a try, either with a few friends or quietly reflecting by yourself – grab your magazines, scissors and glue and get going!

All Blacks win helps raise funds for Browns Bay School Browns Bay business Andrew Baker Electrical recently came up with their own creative idea to help raise funds for Browns Bay School.

Leveraging the rugby championship on Saturday, September 17 between the All Blacks and South Africa, the company used social media site Facebook to pledge Browns Bay School $50 for every winning point the All Blacks scored above the Springboks. The outcome was a win all round. The game ended with the All Blacks 28 points up over South Africa, resulting in Andrew Baker Electrical donating just over $1400 to Browns Bay School for their project to redevelop the junior playground.“We really wanted to support our local school and drive some brand awareness of our business says the electrical company’s director, Andrew Baker. "This idea was really a win-win."

The initiative paid off by significantly increasing traffic to the company's social media page Baker said.

"We were delighted when Andrew Baker Electrical announced the All Black win donation of their own accord” says Browns Bay School Principal Peter Mulcahy.

The school has a target to raise in excess of $100,000 over 3 years to upgrade the junior playground. These costs will not be met by the Ministry of Education. Mulcahy says it takes a lot of hard work by volunteers to fundraise the kind of money needed for a large scale playground redevelopment project and often relies on the financial support of school families, who have already provided for other school-related costs.

“The unexpected and generous donation from a local business like Andrew Baker Electrical is fantastic. We're very appreciative when local businesses get involved and support us" Mulcahy said.

With a growing school roll year on year, the demand on Browns Bay School’s playground equipment is ever-increasing.

"We've got more students than ever and the existing junior playground is very limited in space and scope for creative play.

We've really outgrown it" says Mulcahy. "We are lucky to have some great play areas at Browns Bay School for our older students but we really need an improved, dedicated space for our little ones, especially while they get established here."

Spring is in full swing and has to be one of the most exciting months in the gardening calendar!

Get ready for delicious home grown summer salads!

We have a huge range of tomatoes, salad greens, herbs and vege seedlings in store - plant now and enjoy them this summer.

It is the traditional time to start putting down tomatoes and other summer vegetables, and with the temperatures rising your plants will begin to flourish.

Auckland house prices increase, but growth restrained Auckland house prices continued to rise in August, but signs the rate of increase is slowing - which first showed up in July - were still present.

"August's price increase was restrained, for both the average price and the median price," said Peter Thompson, Managing Director of Barfoot & Thompson.

"The slow-down is not so obvious when comparing August data with that for July, but when you look at the average for the previous three months it becomes more apparent.

"The average sales price in August was $906,560. While this was up 4.5 percent on that for July, it was up only 2.6 percent on the average price over the previous three months.

"Our data shows that those claiming the average price is on the verge of topping $1 million are over inflating where prices are heading.

"While prices continue to rise, for the past five months buyers have not been prepared to pay more than they believe is the market price.

"The same trend can be seen with the median price, which at $850,000 for August is up 1.2 percent on July’s, and up 2.5 percent for the average for the previous three months.

"Current price increases are relatively modest compared with what has occurred in recent years.

"The slowdown can also be seen when comparing August's sales numbers, listings at month end and new listings with the average for these statistics for the previous three months.

"It has led to a small increase in the choice available for buyers.

"The real test of where prices are heading will come this month with the arrival of spring. For the past three years, September's average and median prices have exceeded those for August, with prices then continuing to increase to year end.

"During August, 347 properties, representing 34.6 percent of properties sold for in excess of $1 million and 109 properties, representing 10.9 percent of all sales, sold for under $500,000."

As osteopaths we see a lot of backs with various degrees of buckling and imbalance.

The technical term for asymmetry through the spine when viewed from behind, is scoliosis. This can be extreme enough to require operations in some cases, where organ compression is involved, and for an aesthetically straight back. For lesser cases there are challenges in everyday life where symmetry is the norm.

A workout in a gym usually requires balance between the limbs to be maintained; a bench press for example, whilst lying on a firm flat surface could be painfully awkward.

The demands on the spine are rarely evenly distributed and the ability to cope with differing angles and pressures over the spine is the hallmark of a healthy back. The idea of ‘core stability’ should perhaps be replaced by the concept of ‘core competency’. This better reflects the need not only to be strong and taut but pliable and adaptable in equal measure. Overload training techniques are unlikely to fulfil that brief, whereas varied postures and controlled demands based on bodyweight resistance exercises will achieve the desired control; think Pilates and yoga.

Try this test: Stand with feet shoulder width apart and reach forward to touch the tops of your kneecaps. Now ask someone to look at your spine from the back so that their eye level is at the same height as the apex of the spine. They may be able to see a high side on the ribs on one side compared to the other. This suggests rotation and side-bending in the spine and ribs, and may limit the functional capacity of the chest. It is likely to be reflected in other areas too, like the neck and lumbar spine.

The osteopathic viewpoint includes the idea that the body has an inherent ability to heal itself. It should be able to reorganise without the need for anything more than a good quality diet and sufficient circulatory stimulation to aid nerve function. The spinal cord is seen as the orchestrator of this ability. Interruptions to blood flow around the segments of the spine and neurological interference contribute to the tightness and tension we feel through our bodies. By keeping these restrictions to a minimum through articulation at the joints, stretch at the muscles and stimulation of the circulation the best results can be achieved throughout life. Eventually gravity and deconditioning will get the better of us, but if we can maintain at least some of the pliability we were born with and adapt successfully to the demands of modern living, then we will undoubtedly have a more successful and more comfortable time on this planet.

Education: Long Bay College

History made for Long Bay College netball History was made recently when the Long Bay College Premier Netball team won the North Harbour Netball College Premier Grade. In front of a big crowd of supporters, Long Bay College played Westlake Girls in the Grand Final and having had a loss and a draw against Westlake earlier in the season, the girls were keen for their first ever title win.

It was an incredibly close game with Long Bay College taking the victory by one goal. This was the first time that Long Bay College has ever won the Premiership Title.

Celebrations were a plenty as the players, coaches, family, teachers and fellow students savoured the historic moment in Long Bay College sporting history.

Beauty and the Beast – a magical performance Staff and students at Long Bay College were inspired to reimagine Disney’s sensational musical Beauty and the Beast through the imaginative lens of the Steampunk genre. They created a world of inventions and adventures, clockwork and battles, electric light and love. Producer Brendan Perkins was astounded at how the Fabric Technology and Visual Design Departments rallied around this magnificent show to try to realise the students’ original designs.

The production saw some extraordinary singing talent from outstanding newcomer Briana Gordhan as Belle and the impressively talented Kane Evans as The Beast. A collection of wonderful

character actors brought to life the castles mechanically magical creatures of the suave Lumiere, the tightly wound Cogsworth and the no-nonsense Mrs Potts. The cast dedicated many hours to perfecting the big rousing chorus numbers such as the infamous Be Our Guest and choreographing stage fighting for battles scenes.

Long Bay College has a stellar record for putting on a fantastic, entertaining, night out. This year was certainly no different.

Alumni Day On Friday 28 October 2016, Long Bay College will be holding its annual Alumni Day where former students of the school challenge the current top teams in Cricket, Hockey, Football and Netball. Games will be held at the school and North Harbour Hockey. Cricket begins at 10am, while the other matches will be held in the afternoon from 1.30pm. Many people have been left wondering if we are in a bubble. When will it burst?

Are house prices going to increase? Or is it just natural growth fueled by immigration figures?

A recent NZ Herald article (Tuesday, 09 August 2016) states that there are 600 new settlers each week, new Immigration New Zealand (INZ) figures reveal. And noted that a recent conference was to be held to discuss how much more immigration is sustainable? As net migration to New Zealand hits a record 68,000.

Heartland immigration website posted on August 28 that the Labour Party wants the government to stop issuing work visas to people taking jobs that aren’t on the immigration skilled shortage lists, saying that those people are taking jobs away from New Zealanders.

In parliament, Labour Party immigration spokesperson Iain LeesGalloway asked the Minister of Immigration, Michael Woodhouse, how many of the 209,000 work visas issued last year were for occupations on the “essential skills in demand” list. Mr Woodhouse said his best advice was that between 15,000 and 16,000, or eight percent of work visas, were on the immigration skills shortage list.

According to the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand not all house prices in Auckland are exceeding a million dollars!

I personally feel it is important to look at the overall statistics before jumping to conclusions. Auckland’s median house price for the month of August was $842,500.00 up from $740,000.00 at the same time last year. Looking at the comparison between July and August, Auckland’s median house price is up 2%. From $825,000.00 in July to $842,500.00 in August. In my opinion the housing market,​despite seasonal change from winter to spring, i​s on track for normal annual growth in the upcoming months.

So what does this mean?

If you are selling your home, m ​ ake sure it is well presented and looking good and ideally spend money on marketing your home properly as you may find that the old expression “Pay peanuts and get monkeys” applies. This is a big asset you are selling, so ideally make sure your marketing plan is adequate for your property and will get it seen by potential as many buyers as possible.

Are you looking to buy a home in the next few months? Typically more houses come on the market at this time of year which means simply that buyers have more choices and potential options to buy.

Bays RSA: News

Bays RSA Rises from the Ashes After a long delay caused by the scarcity of building contractors, the East Coast Bays RSA has finally – like the mythical Phoenix – risen from the ashes of the disastrous fire on the morning of Mothers Day 2015.

The repair work is complete and improvements have been incorporated in the bar and lounge. TV screens as well as pool and snooker tables have been replaced and the restaurant redecorated.

Now that the RSA has all the facilities restored it is working towards recovering its position as an important asset to the Browns Bay community. The aim is now to attract new members.

Times are changing in the Bays and the RSA too is adapting to changing times. Like many RSA’s all over the country they have become a community social club. The days when the RSA was an exclusive club for war veterans are long gone and in the past.

RSA is a part of a countrywide organisation with a proud history that began 100 years ago and has become an institution in New Zealand with clubs in towns – large and small.
