Toitū carbonreduce Benefitz achieves certification

For a long time Benefitz has had a commitment to sustainability. Operating in a manner ensuring that our impact on the environment is continuing to improve. This is being achieved in a number of ways – investing in new technologies, investing in such initiatives as solar power and electric vehicles.

A key sustainability commitment is reducing our carbon footprint. It was a thrill to recently achieve our Toitū carbonreduce certification – an important step in our journey to become carbon neutral. This certification is also proof that we are measuring and reducing our carbon footprint in line with international best practice.

To achieve Toitū carbonreduce certification, an organisation must measure all operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions required under the international standard for carbon footprints, ISO 14064-1, including vehicles, business travel, fuel and electricity, paper and waste. The emissions are measured annually, and the inventory is independently verified to ensure it is accurate and complete. On this journey Benefitz will develop plans to continually manage and reduce our emissions.

Toitū is an active verb that means “to sustain”. It asks us to work as individuals, organisations and New Zealanders to care for our planet, people and communities. Toitū means to sustain continually. We prioritise continuous improvement in the journey to reduce our environmental impact and regenerate our environment.

Toitū is a programme that also connects our actions with our outcomes. This is important to us as a company, as we measure, manage and reduce our environmental impacts and carbon emissions, and disclose these results in a public forum. We are part of a like-minded community of over 400 organisations taking science-based action for a better environment. To date, programme members have reduced over 8.7 million tonnes of CO2e.

Toitū carbonreduce certification is currently available in 17 countries and the certification marks are recognised in over 60 countries, making it ideal for companies working in global supply chains or exporting products.

More information on our sustainability commitment is included on following pages, or visit www.benefitz.co.nz

Benefitz is committed to being a leader in sustainability

At Benefitz we do things thoughtfully, thinking ahead and looking at how our actions impact the environment. We are constantly looking at the products and services used in our business and thinking about their impact on the environment and how we can do things differently and better.

On the following four pages is our Benefitz Sustainability Policy and Commitment. The aim of this is to provide clear direction about Benefitz efforts to commit to operate in a sustainable manner.

Liquid/Chemicals

WHAT WE’VE DONE:

• Our facility produces a minimal amount of ‘low risk’ chemical waste, classified as non-solvent ink waste. 100% of this is collected and disposed of safely by ChemWaste. Nothing goes into the stormwater system or rivers, and we have spill kits on site to quickly deal with any spillage.

FUTURE ACTION:

• Gradual replacement of offset machinery with more automated digital machinery (this is happening) will result in ‘cleaner’ ink waste and eliminate the need for this action - MEDIUM/LONG TERM.

Packaging

WHAT WE’VE DONE:

• Eliminated 95% of our plastic shrink wrapping by switching to recyclable packaging such as paper and cardboard.

• Switched out bubble wrap for cardboard packaging where practical.

• Discontinued use of plastic trackpacks/courier bags altogether.

FUTURE ACTION:

• Remove shrink wrapper machinery altogether - SHORT TERM.

• Reduce unnecessary packaging on ‘collect/local delivery’ items - SHORT TERM.

• Switch to eco bubble wrap alternative when financially viable - MEDIUM TERM.

Fabrication Materials, Printed Stocks & Media Substrates

WHAT WE’VE DONE:

• Heavy use of environmentally friendly/recyclable materials like wood and metals.

• Use of LED lighting in all lit signage displays.

• Audit and reduction of any hazardous chemicals used in signage processes.

• Annual FSC accreditation on offset and digital printed stocks.

• Sourced sustainable/recyclable print substrates.

FUTURE ACTION:

• Investigate end of life at customer end, i.e. easy/clean options for customer disposing of materials after use - SHORT/MEDIUM TERM.

• Increase our portfolio of sustainable substrates and promote to customers as a preferred option - SHORT/MEDIUM TERM.

• Work to eliminate any plastics and chemicals in signage production as better options become readily available - SHORT/MEDIUM TERM.

Machinery/Equipment & Suppliers/Partners

WHAT WE’VE DONE:

• Partnered with HP, SwissQprint, Microsoft, Zund - Global leaders in sustainability and ethical business practices (see resource links below).

• Replaced Jet SX with more efficient HP Indigo - B2 Digital Printing.

• Replaced Xerox iGen with more efficient Fujifilm Revoria - Digital Printing.

• Replaced EVI Vutek with more efficient SwissQ Flatbed - XL Printing

• Replaced Uvistar Grand Format Printer with more efficient FujiFilm Acuity R2 (LED) - XL Printing

FUTURE ACTION:

• Smarter buying to reduce air and road miles for moving machinery and supplies - more local sources and better planned less deliveries (i.e. fewer, larger deliveries) - SHORT/MEDIUM TERM

• Introduce standards for suppliers for commitments around both environmental and ethical standards - MEDIUM TERM

PILLAR 4:

ETHICS & COMMUNITY

ETHICS AND GOVERNANCE

For 34 years Benefitz has been run with very high ethical standards which is recognised and respected by our staff, in our industry and by those we do business with – customers, suppliers. Combined with strong governance this will continue to be a strong focus of the business going forward.

LEADERSHIP

Our commitment to strong ethics and following sound business principles and being involved in the community comes from the top of the business. These have been founding principles that have stayed with the business for 34 years and will continue as leadership evolves and changes.

DIVERSITY

At Benefitz, we have a diverse workforce, encompassing gender diversity, unique cultural backgrounds and a range of different abilities and perspectives. We are committed to fostering a work environment where these differences are supported, valued and respected, and where all our employees feel safe and included at work.

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT, INTERNAL SKILLS AND TRAINING

Since 1988 Benefitz has been a responsible employer that is focused on doing the best by our employees. This includes engagement, growing personal and professional skillsets and ensuring that our people are looked after and remunerated well.

We continue to refine and improve our human resources capability.

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

The owners of Benefitz are very proud of our reputation for customer satisfaction, with customers voting with their feet over more than three decades. We have customers that have been with us over that time and many that have been with us for 10-25 years.

Ensuring our customers are 100% satisfied is a culmination of us providing a very sound all round business proposition – we cover all aspects of business pretty well.

FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE

While this clearly remains a very important measure of our business, it is not a focus that consumes us. We are not driven financially and understand that business can’t just be about the money.

It is proven over decades that we know how to run a successful and profitable business. To do this we have our own skills – those of the directors and key senior staff – combined with the skills and professional services of external providers (accounting, software/IT, Health & Safety etc.) to ensure our financial management, reporting and compliance is consistent and accurate.

We pride ourselves on being very good payers of our valued suppliers and meeting our taxation and compliance requirements on time, every time.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY INCLUDING GIVING BACK THROUGH SPONSORSHIP AND CHARITABLE GIVING

This is an area where Benefitz is well ahead of the pack. From day one we have had a strong sense of social responsibility. This has been rewarded with Civic Awards from our local council and our Managing Director Aidan Bennett receiving a Queen Service Medal (QSM) for services to the community.

Benefitz sponsors a wide range of organisations, these currently include:- North Harbour Club Charitable Trust (AIMES Awards); Sustainable Coastlines; North Harbour Rugby; Auckland Cricket; Netball New Zealand; Mystics Netball; Northern Stars Netball; YES Disability Resource Centre; Halberg Foundation & Awards; Takapuna Beach Business Assn; Milford Business Assn; Business North Harbour (Business Assn); Pupuke Golf Club; North Shore Golf Club; Waitemata Golf Club; St Patricks Day Golf Trust & Tournament; Harbour Hospice; KidsCan; Abilities; Big Buddy; Shore Junction Youth Hub; Devonport Business Association; Heart Kids; Murrays Bay Sailing Club; AUT Millennium; NZ Sculpture On Shore; The Pumphouse; Tadpole Theatre Productions; Tim Bray Theatre Productions; Shoreside Theatre; Storylines; Westlake Boys High School; NZ Gymnastics; North Shore United Football Club; East Coast Bays Softball; Campbells Bay Tennis Club; Milford Bowling Club; North Harbour Softball; North Shore City Baseball; Belmont Bowling Club; Bowls North Harbour; Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust; Rangitoto College; Tread Lightly; Kenzies Gift.

Benefitz at Homegrown

Benefitz big printing capability was on show once again at Jim Beam Homegrown held on the waterfront in Wellington in March. It is an event we have been assisting annually for many years.

This is a massive music festival that requires big images for a range of purposes. It consists of five stages along the Wellington waterfront from Waitangi Park to Frank Kitts Reserve.

915 metres of printed fence scrim was required for the fencing to create the ticketed venue. We also produced large decals on the gables of all the stage tents. In addition, we printed rigid directional signage, bar menus and instructions for all the entrances. Large printed mesh banners were printed for wrapping all VIP structures. Printed mesh banners also covered all large speakers on the sides of the stages. Printed mesh banners also covered all the scaffold structures with these being over 17 metres x 4.4 metres.

All the printed mesh was finished with reinforced double-stitched edges with lots of eyelets to withstand the Wellington weather. Sure enough, there was a storm on the Friday just prior to the event and everything stayed in one piece.

A big project, but one we love doing. Being able to print up to 5 metres wide and virtually any length makes things easier as well.

Benefitz at NZ Open

Producing all the signage required for the 2024 NZ Open held at Millbrook in Central Otago was a new project for Benefitz in January and February this year.

All the signage for the event was produced using solar power in our North Shore factory and shipped to Queenstown for installation.

We produced tee signage, green and fairway signage, printed fence mesh, directional signage, and decals for a range of requirements including 100 vehicles, large fabric prints for the hospitality, large banners for the exterior of marquees, also for around the TV camera towers and for cladding temporary grandstands and other structures. We also produced cylinders to brand the moving ropes around the course. We produced and supplied fabric media and sponsors' backdrops. There was also a range of printing required, such as scorecards, menus etc.

Three interesting structures that we created which really made an impact at the event, were the life-sized 3D ‘103’ displays (it was the 103rd NZ open), two huge fabric archways to create branded entry areas and a temporary archway for sponsor Manuka Doctor, using an existing footbridge to clad onto.

Members of the Benefitz signage installation team were on hand at Millbrook in late February to assist with installation and application prior to the event. We loved being a part of such a great event!

Benefitz introduces Refab board, recycled from textile waste

For many years we have had requests from customers seeking a more sustainable option to rigid boards made from non-recyclable materials. In response to these requests we have been continually working with key suppliers to source and develop alternatives.

We are thrilled to announce the introduction of Refab, a brand new rigid printable board that is made entirely from textile waste. The neat thing is it’s made right here in New Zealand.

Benefitz director Dallas Bennett has played a significant role in fostering the development of this new board. He came across a local textile company experimenting with trying to produce rigid boards, but struggling with the expertise and industry knowledge to complete the end product.

“With the original prototype product I could see the potential,” explains Dallas. “I could also see they needed some industry expertise. So we introduced them to one of our very proactive suppliers and together they came up with the an excellent product. We’ve provided advice along the way.

“It’s a thrill to now have a very printable board, that we call Refab. Refab can be used for short-term outdoor use and will just about last forever when used inside. It really is an alternative for flute and other composite boards.”

Dallas says the sustainable advantages of the Refab board are huge. It offers a true circular recycling process. The biggest being that it is manufactured right here in Auckland.

“It comes to us out of the factory in Auckland, we can print on the board, then it can be used by our customers and come back to us. We then send it back to the factory to be mulched up and made into more Refab boards.”

• 1.44kg of recycled textile waste makes up 1 x REFAB 3mm Board

• 2.88kg of recycled textile waste makes up 1 x REFAB 5mm Board

• REFAB boards are 1220mm x 2440mm and can be used both indoor and outdoor [up to 3 months]. the facts

Refab is made from textile waste such as old workwear and high vis jackets diverted from landfill.

“We believe Refab board has massive potential for short term event signage, real estate signage and for display, exhibitions and events,” adds Dallas Bennett. “It prints very well and is available in both 3mm and 5mm thickness, with the option to manufacture different thicknesses in the future.”

The Refab Process

1. Product collected/dropped to Manufacturer

2. Run through automatic cutting and shredding process

3. Pressed into bales

4. Fibres are bound together then stitched

5. Cut to size and stacked on pallet

6. Stripped of any metal or hard plastic

7. Teased from cut/shredded material back into fibre

8. Bales blended together to ensure consistent blend

9. Bonded in an oven

New Zealand’s newest and biggest printing machine for big images

For over two decades Benefitz has been one of the very few in the New Zealand market to be able to print 5 metres wide. This is set to continue well into the future with the recent installation of the brand new Fujifilm Acuity Ultra R2 LED Printer – 5 metres wide!

This new machine has replaced our Uvistar 5 metre printer that we had for many years. The purchase continues our strong partnership with Fujifilm. They have been a very reliable supply partner for a long period.

As well as providing us with the best power in the country to print big images, the new machine offers many other advantages.

It is estimated that the Acuity Ultra R2 uses one third of the power required by the machine it is replacing, the benefits of the LED technology. Ink usage is 30-40% more efficient and there are also advantages in longevity of the LED technology (lamps etc).

The machine is faster, more automated, and resolution (quality) is also substantially higher at 1200dpi, versus the previous machine that was 600dpi.

Due to the improved resolution and extra substrates that this new machine prints on there will be advantages in versatility with the new technology.

“We have been customers of Fujifilm for over 25 years,” explained Benefitz MD Aidan Bennett, when reflecting on the decision to order the machine. “We work with them on small format digital machinery and our large/grand format machinery. We had no hesitation on choosing to entrust them again with this investment as they were fantastic with the support they provided on the previous machine. They are very good with their servicing and technical support.”

New Zealand’s newest and biggest printing machine for big images is printing now at Benefitz – powered by solar.

Benefitz tackles huge Rugby World Cup project

Branding three venues, wrapping 12 buses and more!

The team at Benefitz completed a challenging project – to rebrand three stadium venues for the Rugby World Cup for Women held in October and November – with the final at Eden Park.

The three stadiums used for the Rugby World Cup were Eden Park and Waitakere Stadium in Auckland, and Northland Stadium in Whangarei.

“We were thrilled to be chosen to deliver this project for NZ Rugby and World Rugby as it gave us a real opportunity to show

“We understand we were one of around a dozen local and international business to pitch for the event, so to be given the nod was very pleasing. Our all-round manufacturing and installation capability, lengthy track record and use of solar power would have been big factors in the decision.”

For Benefitz the project included the branding of the three venues as well as wrapping 12 team buses and satisfying the display requirements of several international event sponsors.

“Our strength in the design area played a huge part in the event going very smoothly,” adds Blake Douglas.

“We have a team of creative people who can respond quickly to the requirements of these event organisers. On the back of that strength, we have one of the best – if not the best – large and grand format printing operation in the country. It’s powerful with the ability to print up to five metres wide and any length. Event requirements ranged from printing massive banners and lots of rigid signage panels through to adhesives for buses and general use branding and covering up at the venues. We

also produced over 60 media backdrops – both rigid and fabric –and additional items such as branded archways and media towers and hundreds of metres of printed fence mesh.

Our strength in the design area played a huge part in the event going very smoothly…

“Our team undertook all of the installation, with windows of just five to seven days to get things installed from start to finish. Each of the venues had different challenges. At Eden Park it was size.

At Waitakere Stadium we were turning a suburban venue into an international stadium with branding on temporary structures. And Northland Stadium was just a bit further away in Whangarei.”

“We were thrilled with the result of our efforts and the work of our whole crew. This was a massive undertaking that involved most of our 70-plus staff at certain times. There was a requirement for most to dig in and do that bit extra to get things done and that was what happened. It was a real team effort.”

Benefitz plays a part in BEST Awards gold!

The Benefitz team is thrilled that a project we were involved in manufacturing won Gold at the recent BEST Awards. The project was titled ‘Tū Ana Ngā Pou Angitu’ designed by Benjamin Thomason and Angie Frires of Wai Creative for Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency.

Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency approached WaiCreative to design and create some contemporary Māori art pieces for their Annual Hui. The brief was wide, to reflect their kawa and kaupapa of the hui in a contemporary sense. They worked closely together to ensure the designs properly reflected the concepts behind Te Kawa o Whānau Ora. Further development saw a deeper link to Te Ao Māori by creating six different Pou, each designed to reflect the six different uara or values.

From their wonderful designs, Benefitz was commissioned to created six different Pou, with a brief that they wanted them illuminated and they needed to be self-standing.

An initial prototype was made. With one of the images the Benefitz team router cut different thicknesses of acrylic at various depths. We then applied a light source to see which one gave us the best light refraction. The desire of the client was also to change the colour and control each Pou individually so we sourced wifi RGB strip LED’s. We created a housing to stop the light spilling from the outside edges with aluminium ‘U’ channel and seated with rubber beading. A weighted base was created to house electrical components. The base was wrapped in vinyl along with the aluminium channel edging.

Benefitz was commissioned to created six different Pou, with a brief that they wanted them illuminated and they needed to be self-standing.

Once approved all six of the Pou were created. Cases were also made so the Pou could be transported.

Great work here from Benefitz Account Manager Paul Barratt and Rob Brind of the Benefitz sign fabrication team who took the brief and came up with the solution, including the LED lighting.

We loved Nadia Lim’s comfort kitchen cookbook

A growth area for Benefitz is the printing of books. With the ability to design, print and finish books in house we offer authors, writers and publishers - a very costeffective solution.

We are fortunate that members

of our team also have decades of experience in book publishing and production to guide customers.

Just after the first COVID-19 level four lockdown we were thrilled to be printing leading New Zealand food celebrity Nadia Lim’s Comfort Kitchen Cookbook right here in New Zealand on the sunny North Shore. 100% of the profits of the book went to charity. Split between Women’s Refuge New Zealand and Youthline, two deserving charities who saw a huge spike in demand during the Covid-19 pandemic.

We printed around 40,000 of the limited edition 120-page full colour cookbook that contained all the recipes from Nadia’s Comfort Kitchen TV series that was hugely popular during the COVID-19 level four lockdown.

Many people had asked Nadia for a printed book so they could keep the recipes forever. Nadia responded with a fantastic gesture.

This was a great opportunity for our whole team to work together to achieve the goal of delivering for Nadia and her husband Carlos within this very short timeframe…

For Benefitz this was an exciting project. Our design team made last-minute changes to the supplied book files and then we printed and distributed the entire book within a three week period. Benefitz also managed the online orders and data.

“This was a great opportunity for our whole team to work together to achieve the goal of delivering for Nadia and her husband Carlos within this very short timeframe,” explains Benefitz GM Rob Gunston. “The print team were fantastic, working long hours, but so were all other members of our wider team who got stuck in and packed the almost 30,000 online orders, working into the evenings. It really was a complete team effort. Nadia even popped in to help on a couple of occasions, armed with a cake or two.”

With the installation of three key pieces of technology, Benefitz is making it realistic and affordable for publishers and writers to print their books right here in New Zealand. These machines are the HP Indigo 10000 Press, Horizon PUR Perfect Binder and Horizon Hard Case Book Binder.

Benefitz HP Indigo 10000 Press is the perfect printing machine to print short to medium run books. It is a digital printing press so printing plates are not required. It has a sheet size of 750mm x 530mm (B2), the biggest of any flat sheet digital press in Australasia. The Indigo ElectroInk liquid ink is durable, very similar to offset printing inks. A big advantage is books can be printed stacked, meaning no extra costs for collating are incurred.

Benefitz also has two volume offset printing machines and two smaller format Fujifilm digital printing machines – all capable of printing books.

Benefitz Horizon BQ-470 PUR Perfect Binder enables the Benefitz team to take the printed sheets from the Benefitz JetSX B2 Inkjet Press and produce finished square spine (PUR

bound) books of virtually any shape or size. The BQ-470 is a fully automated perfect binder, producing up to 1,350 superior-quality perfect bound books per hour.

For those who wish to have their books with the hard cover finish we are able to do this on our Benefitz Horizon HCB2 Hard Case Binder. The HCB-2 is the ideal solution for producing ‘On Demand’ case bound books. The binding system is designed with an ergonomic concept to increase productivity and efficiency.

Benefitz has the perfect solution for short to medium run books to be printed locally. We can also help with getting books printed offshore should that be the more cost effective solution.

Nadia Lim’s Comfort Kitchen Cookbook was printed on Benefitz Komori Offset Printing Press due to the large quantity.

Benefitz installs SwissQ flatbed printing technology

Benefitz has continued its commitment to the latest technologies with the purchase and installation of a SwissQ Nyala 4S, a brand-new state-of-the-art grand format flatbed printing machine. As the name suggests the machine is from a Swiss manufacturer, SwissQprint, based in Kriessern, Switzerland.

Benefitz prints many of New Zealand’s biggest images and this new machinery enhances that capability – being faster and more efficient than machinery it has replaced – also providing environmental improvements.

“The SwissQ Nyala 4S is fast and flexible and can print as a ‘flatbed’ machine on rigid substrates and also on flexible substrates for billboards, banners, wraps and point of sale etc.,” explains Rob Gunston, GM at Benefitz. “We have chosen the option that is the most productive of the SwissQprint range, printing up to nine colours that can include special white ink or a clear coat. It’s capable of printing up to 370 square metres per hour.

“We have a policy of investing in new technology for both efficiency and to constantly improve our environmental performance. Every time we make an investment like this, the advancement in the technology offers huge environmental benefits. We feel sure our customers appreciate this commitment to cleaner technologies.”

The new Benefitz SwissQ Nyala 4S prints (up to 3.2 metres wide) using LED curing technology. LED curing is cooler, having neither a warm-up nor a cool-down time. As well as having the eight colour (plus extra) print capability, it has an addressable resolution up to 1080 dpi and a visual resolution up to 2160 dpi. It also has an added feature called ‘droptix’. This means print items can be enhanced with 3D effects.

“We have been looking forward to the new SwissQ arriving and it’s great that it is now in production,” adds Rob Gunston. “We feel sure our customers will enjoy all the advantages that it is providing and we feel it will bring in new business for us as well.”

Benefitz has developed a reputation for printing New Zealand’s biggest images. Our XL printing capability is a real strength of our business. Nobody prints big images like Benefitz!

Benefitz operates 13 different machines in the large and grand format printing space with the biggest capable of printing up to five metres wide and virtually any length.

Our machinery includes our 5 metres wide Fujifilm Acuity R2 printing machine. That beast prints to 5 metres wide and virtually any length. This SwissQ Nyala 4S flatbed machine is another beast that prints up to 3.2 metres wide on just about any substrate, with its specialty being able to print in rigid materials –eco-flute, flute, signboard, board, card, composites, wood, iron and more! There is also a second (Mimaki) flatbed that offers similar capabilities.

Benefitz also has three Mutoh Fabric printers that print up to 2.6 metres wide, enabling the production of flags and other fabric display items such as event and media walls. Fabric printing is a big growth area for Benefitz.

The SwissQ Nyala 4S is fast and flexible and can print as a ‘flatbed’ machine on rigid substrates and also on flexible substrates for billboards, banners, wraps and point of sale etc.

We also have a number of 1.6 metre wide printers – Mutoh, Mimaki, Epson and HP Latex machines that are real workhorses, pumping out large high quality images galore – posters, adhesive images for vehicle signage and more!

A key ingredient in our XL printing area is our Zund G3 automated cutter. This state-of-the-art machine enables us to trim finish items like never before – and be creative with shapes!

Our Komori Volume Offset technology provides the real printing grunt in our Benefitz HQ print factory. This machinery prints to B2 in size and up to 15,000 sheets per hour. The machinery was purchased new some years ago and we have come to love it for the volume capacity and overall reliability.

Two new print technology investments

Hot on the heels of Benefitz commitment to solar energy, 2022 saw the installation of two new pieces of technology at the new BenefitzHQ, providing additional production power and further reducing the businesses impact on the environment.

The first of these machines is the installation of an HP Indigo B2 Digital Press, this replaces the companies B2 JetSX Press which has provided the capability to produce A2 and B2 size sheets digitally in volume.

“It was time for us to update the JetSX and we believe that the HP Indigo 10000 Digital Press using ElectroInk was the best replacement option for us at this time,” says Benefitz MD Aidan Bennett. “Being B2 in size (750mm x 530mm) the Indigo 10000 prints to the same size as our

conventional offset printing machinery, but digitally, using the very robust Indigo ElectroInk liquid ink.

“The combination of the new Indigo 10000, our offset machines, and and our Fujifilm SRA3 toner based digital machines has been great for our business, ensuring quality, substrate versatility, and production flexibility. These presses enable us to print both larger volumes and short print runs efficiently and cost effectively.”

The combination of the new Indigo 10000, our offset machines, and and our Fujifilm SRA3 toner based digital machines will be a great one for our business…

The second piece of new technology at BenefitzHQ was a brand new Fujifilm 6-Colour Revoria Digital Press. Benefitz was one of the first in New Zealand to install this completely new technology. It complements the companies existing Fujifilm 6-Colour Iridesse Digital Press that was installed in 2019. Both are SRA3 presses (450mm x 320mm) with the ability to print longer ‘banner’ sheets up to 1200mm long.

“As printing volumes adjust and the demand changes we are also constantly changing and this technology upgrade was undertaken to significantly enhance our print power in the small format digital space.” adds Aidan Bennett. “The new technology is being provided by HP and Fujifilm, two of the biggest players in the market globally.”

We bought our first Mac in 1989. 30 years on we’ve done ‘the Mahi’ and been an incubator for loads of creatives who have gone on with their careers.

The Benefitz design team remains a cornerstone of our success. The ability to lead the creative process – as well as manufacture – is a real advantage for our business.

ZERO WASTE

BENEFITZ ZERO WASTE CORFLUTE RECYCLING PROGRAM

We are on a mission to divert waste away from landfill. Recycling is the cleanest and most efficient way to dispose of printed media.

Benefitz has partnered with Kirbyco and Future Post to turn Corflute signage waste into premium fence posts.

Future Post fence posts are 100% environmentally friendly. They don’t leach out CCAs (copper, chromium and arsenic) like treated timber posts or any other harmful ingredients which is why they are certified by BioGro NZ for use in organic farming.

Every post is made from commercial plastic waste (including Polypropylene/Corflute) so there is no demand on natural resources to produce them.

At their end-of-life, posts can be recycled multiple times. This creates an ongoing environmentally sound and sustainable solution for dealing with large format print waste.

Speak to your Benefitz account manager today on how we can help reduce the carbon footprint of your print and marketing. By working with us you will be contributing positively to the environment and the community while still meeting your business goals.

Right: Michelangelo – A Different View exhibition included over 50 large images, mostly printed on Fabric.

Below: Aidan Bennett and the 20 by 4.6 metres floor image that was printed in one piece by Benefitz.

Benefitz helps Michelangelo exhibition come alive in Auckland

The team at Benefitz completed a significant project that demonstrated the businesses wide-ranging capability. This was for the ‘Michelangelo – A Different View’ exhibition held over six weeks at the Aotea Centre.

Under license from the Vatican Museums, this extraordinary exhibition was an authentic reproduction of Michelangelo’s beautiful ceiling frescoes of the Sistine Chapel.

“We were contacted by the exhibition promoters in mid-2021 asking the question if we were able to print the reproductions as they were nervous about the reliability of shipping from Europe in Covid-times,” explains Benefitz MD Aidan Bennett.

“The reproductions needed to be printed high resolution on a fabric specified, then stretched and framed for the exhibition.”

The ‘Michelangelo – A Different View’ exhibition consisted of over 50 images of the ceiling frescoes of the Sistine Chapel. The images that Benefitz produced were up to 4.6 metres wide and almost 20 metres long. That particular reproduction, called ‘The Genesis’ was the feature floor display of the exhibition. All other reproductions were hung from the ceiling or displayed on easels.

“We tackled the project as we came out of level four Covid19 lockdown and the task grew for us, which we were thrilled with,” adds Aidan Bennett. “We ended up doing all the design, printing, merchandise, display and directional signage for the event, including the installation.”

The 64 page souvenir book that was designed and printed by Benefitz.

“The promoter is based in the Wellington region. With the preChristmas Covid19 travel restrictions in place they unable to get to Auckland. They were able to depend on us to work with the Auckland Live team at the Aotea Centre venue to build-up the event and make it come to a reality.”

The Benefitz team ended up designing and printing all of the items for the event, including the impressive 64 page souvenir programme as well as guide books in both English and Te reo.

‘Michelangelo – A Different View’ ran from January 3rd through to January 30th at the Aotea Centre early in 2022. Due to its popularity the event was extended through until mid-February.

Members of the Benefitz team involved in producing golf scorecards. Leighton Hill (print production supervisor), Blake Douglas (sales manager), Leanika Starbuck (design) and Aidan Bennett (Warriors supporter and MD).

Golf is another part of our DNA. We have been printing scorecards for golf clubs throughout New Zealand for over 34 years. We reckon we’ve printed over 80 million scorecards in that time.

Back in the late 80s we were pioneers in converting golf scorecards from minimal colour pieces into full colour vibrant items that also became marketing tools for clubs and their sponsors. Since that time we have developed systems and made decisions around technology to streamline production.

We are proud to have been supplying many of New Zealand’s 400 golf clubs for 20-30 years.

Robert signs off after three decades with Benefitz

LONG TIME BENEFITZ DIRECTOR

ROBERT JOHNSON RETIRED AT THE END OF MARCH AFTER THREE DECADES WITH THE BUSINESS.

FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS HE WAS A SHAREHOLDER AND DIRECTOR.

Robert first started his career in the printing industry as an apprentice Letterpress operator with York Pelorus Limited. He qualified as a printer, but his warm personality meant he was always much more suited to sales and account management.

Robert spent a few years overseas on his OE in the UK before relocating to Sydney in Australia and establishing a reputation in the music industry with Polygram Music. He spent eight enjoyable years traveling throughout Australia in his role with Polygram Music.

“It was a crazy and fantastic time for a young person,” said Robert, reflecting on his time across the Tasman. “I survived, with highlights including working on tours for Elton John, John Mellencamp as well as many others.”

Returning to New Zealand, Robert went back into printing, working in sales for his brother-inlaw’s North Shore business, Promotional Print.

Around that time Robert met his future wife Lesleigh and also first came into contact with Benefitz founder Aidan Bennett.

“It was a great time in my life and proved to be the making of me really,” explains Robert. “Lesleigh was always a lot of fun and gave my life structure when it was needed. We have never really looked back. We are hugely proud of what we have achieved together, especially raising our two daughters Sammy (30) and Madison (27). They are much cleverer than their dad, that’s for sure! They take after their mum.”

The Shore has been home for Robert and Lesleigh Johnson since they married. First living in Birkenhead, then moving to the Devonport peninsula in the mid-90s.

“I used to call on Aidan as a print rep for Promo Print and we got on well. A year or two after he started Benefitz I also started my own business and was able to share space with the Benefitz crew. I think there was only Aidan, then Dallas (his brother) and one or two others back then.”

“Together we ended up buying another offset print business in the mid-90s that became one of the key ingredients of the Benefitz business today. In mid 2000s we ended up consolidating the business, purchasing our premises on Constellation Drive, and adding a wide range of print and signage capability. This business has grown and grown ever since.”

“I am really proud that we have remained a family business, it is neat that virtually all of our family members have worked in the business at some stage.”

So, what is Robert Johnson going to do in retirement?

“Aidan has asked me to be a ‘Benefitz Ambassador’ which means I get to turn up for events! (he chuckles). I will certainly be staying in contact and will help out where I can. They call it old muscle! Lesleigh and I love living in Devonport and are lucky to have a wide circle of friends in the area. Many are also slowing down. So, we will be busy. Golf at Waitematā (for both of us) will feature largely in our plans, as will be getting away to our bach at Whangamatā more often. Maybe a bit of fishing. Sammy lives in Feilding so we will visit more frequently.”

Farewell Robert from the Benefitz team. You will be missed!

Benefitz Founder inducted into North Harbour Business Hall of Fame

Benefitz founder and Managing Director Aidan Bennett was inducted into the North Harbour Business Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame celebrates those who have made significant contributions to the region in business and in the community.

Aidan started out his business career as an Advertising Cadet at the NZ Herald in 1979. He founded Benefitz in 1988.

Personally and through the business, Aidan is recognised as a strong contributor to the region, giving back to not-for-profit organisations and the community in general. He is also a strong advocate for local business – supporting business associations and business awards programmes over many years.

Aidan Bennett (centre) following his induction into the North Harbour Business Hall of Fame. Also pictured is Richard Pilley of sponsor Milford Asset Management and Hall of Fame Laureate Ken Noble who made the presentation.

Benefitz sponsors and supports a range of organisations – being the longest running sponsor of North Harbour Rugby and a long time sponsor of the North Harbour Club. The company also provides annual graphic design scholarships at local secondary schools.

Aidan has been a member of the North Harbour Club & Charitable Trust since 1997 and served as a trustee for 15 years, including being vice president and president – contributing to the growth of the organisation and it’s annual AIMES Awards programme. It is ironic that Aidan, when president, was responsible for the North Harbour Club resurrecting the Business Hall of Fame, following it being discontinued when Auckland Council was formed. Benefitz has been a sponsor and supplier of services to the North Harbour Club for 25 years.

In 2015, Aidan co-wrote and published the North Harbour Club Book celebrating 20 years and also produced the clubs annual magazine ‘Northside’ for 13 years. He takes great pleasure in writing the annual profiles for the club’s outstanding AIMES Award recipients. In 2023 he is a judge for the AIMES Awards.

His contribution to the North Harbour Club was recently recognised with a Life Membership.

Aidan has also been a Trustee of the Takapuna Beach Playground Trust, St Patricks Day Golf Trust, the Harbour Access Trust and on the Stellar Trust advisory board.

In the 2018 New Year’s Honours Aidan was awarded a QSM for services to the community.

More recently Aidan has served a term as an elected member of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, being the highest polling candidate in 2019 and the chair for the first half of the term from 2019 through to 2022.

He also Chairs of the Matakana Coast Trail Trust, a project that will result in 117kms of cycle trails being built between Puhoi and Mangawhai.

Aidan Bennett became the 35th laureate inducted into the North Harbour Business Hall of Fame since 2004.

The 35 Laureates are – Inductees 2004: Geoff Smale*, Jim Smale*, Ralph Roberts*, Sir Stephen Tindall; Inductees 2005: Sir David Levene* (Lifetime Achievement Award); Sir Graeme Avery; Sir Peter Maire; Inductees 2006: Diane Foreman, Peter Menzies; Inductee 2007: Ian Calderwood; Inductee 2008: David Charlesworth*; Inductee 2009: Colin Harvey*; Inductees 2010: Jan Dawson, Gary Monk; Inductees 2016: Paul Blackwell and Liz Blackwell; John Spooner; Annette Presley; Inductees 2017: Bill Speedy; Eric Fasenkloet; Paul Byrnes; Inductees 2018: Ken Noble; David McAlpine; Steve Newman; Inductees 2019: Greg Smale, Carmel Fisher, Guy Haddleton and Sue Haddleton*; Inductees 2021: Garth Barfoot, Bob Jago, Craig Heatley; Inductees 2022: The Alison Brothers* (Ewan & Alexander), Walter Gill and Simon Gundry, Ann Tod, Aidan Bennett. Inductees 2023: Naomi Ballantyne, Kerry Dines, Ian Jackson, Hugh Stedman *Denotes passed away

About the North Harbour Business Hall of Fame:

Established originally by North Shore City’s business development entity Enterprise North Shore in 2004, the Hall of Fame celebrates those who have made significant contributions to the region in business and in the community. With the amalgamation of Auckland city in 2010 the Hall of Fame stalled for a few years before being re-established by the North Harbour Club in 2015. The name was changed to North Harbour Business Hall of Fame and in 2016 the first laureates were inducted, with the intention to do this annually. To be considered for induction, a nominee must be a successful business leader in their industry, whom has applied their skills and success to also benefit the community. Nominations are open on an ongoing basis. New inductees are selected by a judging committee.

B2 DIGITAL PRINTING

A BENEFITZ POINT-OF-DIFFERENCE!

Benefitz HP Indigo B2 Digital Press is one of our big points of difference. This B2 Digital Press fits nicely between our short-run digital presses and our volume offset presses.

HP Indigo’s liquid ElectroInk technology ensures prints are of the highest quality, matching or even exceeding offset printing. ElectroInk also provides the widest digital colour gamut, with seven ink stations on the press.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A1 & B2?

NOT MUCH. Just the price.

As we can print B2 digitally on our HP Indigo B2 Press.
