Lazy lunches, funky fashion and fitness options attract the cosmopolitan crowd to be seen in Bath Lane. Modern Edge:

Meet the Makers:

Bath Lane epitomises village life in the heart of Bendigo, incorporating the eco-friendly Bendigo Bank complex with its new spaces, walkways and the decking boardwalk. By day, Bath Lane paces along with serious shoppers and lovers of coffee.

Hand-crafted specialties add to the soul of the city. Along Bath Lane explore tailor-made chocolates, jewellery, artisan sourdough breads, bridal gowns, stationary and more.

A History of Bathing: Once a hang-out for those looking for a luxurious soak in the public baths, it was also once home to the Lyric Theatre and a pig market. To capture the past, see the bronze statue by artist Craig Haire or Yvonne George’s steel ďŹ lm reel sculpture.

Bendigo’s European laneway culture got a kick-start with the arrival of great food, wine, beer and fashion. Laneway Revival:

Spanish Inspiration:

Once known as Dispensary Lane in recognition of a busy pharmacy. These days the remedies take the form of food, shopping and pampering.

Local artist Yvonne George has created Gaudi inspired Barcelona gates to enhance the laneway whilst ensuring its artistic edge. Street art, the paste up gallery and regular foodie events add to the buzz.

Foodies Haven: The lane is a tiny jewel that sparkles to the beat of vinyl, global wines, boutique beers, coffee aromas and inspired food. This Europeanstyle hub has transformed into one of Bendigo’s not to be missed nooks.

bendigotourism.com

Must Do: Ŕ Sample Modern European cuisine at El Gordo. Ŕ Taste local and world beer, wine, champage and spirits at The Dispensary Enoteca. Ŕ Try on an outfit from an emerging designer at Robe. Ŕ Pamper yourself at the hair, skin and beauty house, Jools for Jim, and treat your skin for rejuvenation at Serious Skin.

By night this precinct comes alive and the lighting beautifully showcases one of Bendigo’s most stunning buildings. Amazing Architecture:

Night Out:

There’s no mistaking how much gold was found in Bendigo in the 1800s when you see the historic Bendigo Town Hall. Massive wealth came quickly, as did the building of elaborate monuments like this one!

Stylish bars, live music and a thriving night scene keep Bull Street pulsing along into the wee hours. Being a university city, there’s a youth culture brimming with creative energy and a zest for life.

Music Hub:

Must Do:

Bendigo’s live music scene thrives in this precinct, with pubs, clubs and festivals to showcase local talents. Take your choice of rock, blues, roots, jazz or pop, as venues offer diversity to suit the time of day.

Ŕ Enjoy dining alfresco with the historic streetscape setting the scene. Ŕ Get crafty by visiting The Square Handmade Market at the Town Hall four times per year. Ŕ Look out for the Bendigo Blues & Roots Festival and associated shows. Ŕ Book a Bendigo Town Hall tour at the nearby Bendigo Visitor Centre.

Home to big brands and easy to explore, this shopping precinct has the lively buzz of the mall at its heart. Meeting Place:

Family Fun:

Hargreaves Mall has been a popular meeting place for generations. A local goldmine donated bluestone and granite for the upgrading of the space. A new playground, seating and a design feature to symbolise a river bed have been incorporated.

Bring the kids to town to play on the new Fun Loong Playground, with slides, trampoline, climbing areas and wonderful sounds. It’s bright red and shaped like a dragon, inspired by our Chinese heritage.

Big Brands: Sidney Myer once wheeled his barrow of goods here, and today the department store bearing his name still sits as the centrepiece. It is now surrounded by stores where you’ll find clothing, homewares and big brands.

FOOD FOSSICKING

There’s a focus in Bendigo on knowing and sharing the stories of where local produce has come from. A dynamic Food Fossickers network involves local people who are passionate about the important role food plays in a healthy functioning society. It is a group that wants to let people know where their food has come from, and to share the stories about those who helped to put it on the table. The group is keen to put a face to the local farmers, food and beverage growers, producers, distributors, retailers, cafes, pubs, restaurants, butchers, bakeries and more.

46

A wander around Bendigo reveals that streets and laneways are bustling with things that foodies love to find. It’s an emerging scene that’s all about locally grown produce, locally roasted coffee, boutique beers, regional wines and gourmet flair. Start food fossicking by visiting www.foodfossickers.com.au 90 minutes / 100 food miles from Melbourne.

Beautiful goldrush buildings give this magnificent boulevard a truly European feel that defines Bendigo. London Calling:

Bendigo’s Treasures:

Pall Mall was named after the boulevard in London. Rosalind Park sits to one side, Queen Victoria overlooks, a tramline runs down the middle and the gorgeous Alexandra Fountain can’t be missed on Charing Cross.

Book worms will love the choice of new and secondhand books as well as hats, jeans and unique Bendigo gifts.

Heritage Backdrop: Dining in the midst of Bendigo’s breathtaking architecture takes the experience to a new level. Dine as you gaze at monuments from another time.

Must Do: Ŕ International cuisines can be found, including Italian, Indian, Chinese, Spanish, Thai, French, Mexican and more. Ŕ See the Hotel Shamrock, famous for visits by Lola Montez, Dame Nellie Melba and Lady Diana Spencer. Ŕ Don’t miss the Farmers’ Market in Sidney Myer Place on the second Saturday of each month. Artisans, craftspeople, producers and foodies now call this region home, and a quiet transformation is underway. Welcoming Village: A welcoming village atmosphere awaits, with good food, friendly cellar doors, stunning landscapes, local art and craft and much more. Stroll along the main street of Heathcote to find historic buildings, cellar doors and great eateries. Cambrian Soils: Heathcote’s wine region is renowned as one of the best Shiraz growing regions in Australia, thanks to the famous ancient red Cambrian soils and the artisan attitude of local winemakers. Artistic Spirit: There’s an appreciation of the finer things in life in Heathcote

and this is adding to the vibrancy. Local galleries showcase artworks and offer the visitor a chance to see a broad range of styles and mediums. Must Do: Ŕ Find some of Australia’s most sought after wines in the local cellar doors. Ŕ Sample the latest brews at Tooborac’s boutique brewery, which is set in a fine old historic bluestone hotel. Ŕ Fill your basket with fresh local produce at the Heathcote Region Farmers’ Market on the third Saturday of each month. Ŕ Head to one of the many Heathcote food, wine and craft events.
