his year we received a PPP grant and some other funding that helped us do even more Direct Mail this issue, which we have found to be the most effective way to reach new clients! Plus all these amazing Local, Bend Makers generously donated their products to our Gift Boxes to further fund our Postage costs, I think we have done our part to save the USPS this year!!! Then we received a grant for our Fall Health Fair! All of this support, has only inspired us to do more fundraising in the hopes of opening a Healing Center in Bend! It has been my vision to have a space for our community, I am so inspired, that I am going to get my Real Estate License this Fall so that when the building I desire goes on the market, I can get it for us all! Oregon Board of Massage Therapists (OBMT) suggests for hands on modalities, having a standard uniform top, preferably scrubs attire, that can be changed between each and every client is the safest approach while working with clients during this time. You can even get your business logo embroidered on your Scrubs. I was amazed how fashionable scrubs

The real frontline is our community

ovid-19 is different for everyone. There's little predictability in who fares well and for whom it may be fatal, it does not discriminate. To the those who say it only affects the elderly, or people with preexisting conditions, know that roughly 102 million Americans have one. I guarantee most of us have a friend or loved one with high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, obesity, had pneumonia, etc. I work with COVID patients. Some get sick, get oxygen and go home, others aren't so fortunate. A patient in my care started out walking, talking, and needed just a small amount of oxygen. Within hours they were sent to the ICU for intubation and with fear in their voice made a final request of me to get them a chaplain. I wouldn't see them again for several weeks, they wouldn't see anyone besides staff for a month. When they returned from the icu they had tubes coming from their neck, their nose and their genitalia. Nurses and doctors are considered frontline, the reality is, we are not. We are the last line when there are no loved ones and nothing standing between you

and your life besides our expertise and a ventilator. The real frontline is the community. You must all do your part so that we can continue to safely do ours. I ask those having careless visits with friends and family, doubting the efficacy of masking, and talking about rights as if they are more important than the safety of others to take a look in the mirror and then take a look at our patients. Walk through our ICU and then speak about how COVID mitigation strategies are an inconvenience and how it robs people of their freedoms. Sometimes the exercising of those freedoms may inadvertently rob others of their right to breathe and their right to even live. If we, as a community, do not begin operating as a more cohesive unit it may be impossible to keep the curve at a manageable level. So what can we do? I can continue to use my education and training to help covid patients directly. You, the community, must work diligently to combat quarantine fatigue, continue to mask, wash and keep distance. They are the only things scientifically proven to decrease transmission and they are the only tools that will help get us get back to some semblance of normalcy.

4 Ways Oral Health affects Whole Body Wellness

A

s a dentist, I treat people, not teeth. Oral health is not an isolated system. The mouth is a window to our bodies. Often one of the first places we see evidence of bacterial imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, viral or fungal infections is in our mouths. The effects of imbalances or infections are not limited to the oral cavity. For some conditions, we can identify areas of concern before other symptoms are visible throughout our body. Regular dental care is an essential aspect of preventive medicine for our whole body. Here's some ways oral health affects our systemic health.

1

Immunity Our oral cavity is the first line of defense for our immune systems. There are defense proteins present in saliva that play a synergistic effect in our innate and acquired immune responses. These defense proteins form an efficient molecular defense network to help our immune systems function properly.

2

Alzheimer's Risk Chronic inflammation can damage the brain over time. Having untreated gum disease for more than ten years gives you a 70% higher risk for developing Alzheimers.

3

Cancer Risk Inflammation from unhealthy oral bacteria invading the rest of your body increases your risk of developing several types of cancer. Increased rates of breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and colon cancer have been identified in patients with periodontal disease.

4

Diabetes Management Periodontal disease makes managing diabetes and blood sugars more complicated, untreated diabetes makes you more susceptible to periodontal disease. For patients with risk factors for diabetes, it’s important to consider proper periodontal therapy as part of your treatment for management and prevention of diabetes. It’s impossible to separate the mouth from the rest of our system. From a patient’s perspective, it can be empowering and give comfort to know that one's oral condition is not adversely affecting systemic health in any way. I look forward to being your partner on the path to wellness. bendhealthguide.com | BEND HEALTH GUIDE

THE YEAR OF BALL THE

Dr. Elaine Favery

R

eflecting on 2020, the phrase I find most aptly encapsulates our collective experience is The Year of the Curve Ball. At the start of the year, it was being called the year of 2020 vision. Yet now as we are closing in on the end of the year, we see that in truth this was a year of being tested and pushed outside of our comfort zones, seeing if we can bend with change and not break. At the height of both the shutdown and the BLM movement, being a small business owner and a WOC, it was genuinely questioned of me, how I was staying so calm. I was surprised and touched to be recognized for my composure in the face of

upheaval. I would like to share some tips that may be helpful for you to find your way to becoming the calm in the storm.

1

When Life turns upside down and circumstances are out of your control, find what IS within your control and work on that. For me, that was working on business and health.

2

Take empowered action with your health and life with immune system, health enhancing habits and behaviors. Increase your intake of organic whole foods, add necessary supplementation, get adjusted, exercise and spend time in nature. These are truly the cornerstone for optimal health of both mind and body.

3

Turn off the news and spend less time on social media.

4

Practice building awareness and stepping more into the Observer role in your life. Emotions are important, but knee-jerk responses keep a person locked in fight or flight defense patterns. If you are looking to partner with a healthcare provider that can help guide you on your health and wellness journey, Healing Waves is here for you. We help our clients create lasting change in their health and life through innovative, wellness-based, chiropractic services. Let's start inspiring new strategies of healing, growth and empowerment to emerge in your life today!

COPING WITH COVID-19 by Lisa Rosen, LCSW, CADC

I

n life and in my practice, I have been reminded over and over again that there is a quiet beauty in new lessons, even the painful ones. The ability to practice small acts of self-care fosters resilience and can change our whole perspective. These days, it seems that one of the most important things we can do, for ourselves and each other, is to acknowledge that this virus has changed things and made many of us feel a little bit off kilter. At Drishti, we are talking a lot about isolation, financial worry, loneliness, and increased anxiety. At the same time we are also having inspiring and remarkable conversations about personal change, motivation, and learning to appreciate the small gifts. Here are a few quick tips from us to you to help you move toward your best life… even during a pandemic:

GET OUTSIDE AT LEAST ONCE A DAY. Walk. Run. Bike. Move for 30 minutes or more… and wear your mask.

PHYSICAL DISTANCING DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN SOCIAL ISOLATION. Get on the phone or Facetime, join a video chat or community support meeting. With a few clicks of the keyboard, you can learn how to make homemade pasta from a master chef or become an amateur cinematographer. We are all in this together.

PRACTICE BEING IN THE HERE AND NOW AND ACKNOWLEDGING THAT FEELINGS CHANGE. If you wake up and feel down or anxious, do something to try to shift that emotion. Journaling, keeping a gratitude journal, exercise, and companionship have all been proven to be effective in shifting perspectives.

PRACTICE A NEW HOBBY: write, draw, read, cook, paddleboard, ride a mountain bike, meditate. Simple activities like dancing, reading fiction, creating artwork and even sleeping promote neuroplasticity in adults. So, try new things or reacquaint yourself with old experiences, it may actually help your brain adapt to this new and changing platform.

MAKE A LIST OF 3 GOALS, THE MORE SPECIFIC THE BETTER. Think about goals that you can accomplish in the next few months and ask yourself: how will I know I have accomplished this? For example, instead of the goal of completing a 5k, your goal might be: run/walk three times a week for 30 minutes for the next 4 weeks.

IDENTIFY YOUR STRENGTHS. Make a list of the first strengths that come to your mind. Challenge yourself by asking: how can I use these strengths to overcome one thing that feels hard for me right now? Try it for a week.

SHOW GRATITUDE AND BE KIND TO YOURSELF AND OTHERS – it promotes positive thinking in recipients and those who witness it. Pay it forward with a coffee or hang a sign of support from your front window. Did I mention we are all in this together?

TALK TO SOMEONE. We offer individual and group therapy, confidential and individualized substance use and DUII treatment, as well as yoga, meditation, mindfulness and Y12SR to support you in moving toward your best life. Blackstrap Masks B

lackStrap was founded in 2008 and is a leader in USA made face masks, base layer and accessories for outdoor recreationists worldwide. In early March, as the COVID pandemic set in, BlackStrap, as accompany, looked at our resources & abilities and how we could best contribute to keeping individuals safe and ways we could help those in need during these unprecedented times. As we mill all of our fabric domestically we were unsure how the pandemic would affect our supply chain in terms of sourcing fabric to build (any) facemasks. As a company with a core value focused on sustainability we developed the BalckStrap WASTE-ZERO line of products in 2018 that are 100% made from upcycled/repurposed fabric and includes a number of facemasks, headwear & accessories. With this back stock of fabric we were able to build The Civil mask out of upcycled fabric and jump start this product in an unprecedented timeline. Within 2 weeks the Civil Mask was developed, produced and began delivering to individuals, agencies and businesses across the US. For each mask sold

we are donating masks to those in need and as of August 2020 we have donated & delivered more than 60,000 Civil Masks to people in need including health care offices, law enforcement agencies and high risk populations. The Civil Mask provides a sustainable, reusable, tightly woven, low profile, dual layer public safety mask option. While many companies formally “pivoted their business, BlackStrap was able to keep our facilities open, our employees working along with being able to work with the Oregon State Governors office to source, receive & distribute more than 5 million N95 masks through our Bend OR facility. These N95 masks were delivered to frontline healthcare workers across the state through June. While our company is rooted in recreation, we felt more than obligated to utilize resources we have as a company including product development, textile manufacturing, sourcing and distribution to contribute to the health of individuals and communities. Elderberry crone When foraging wild elderberry in the PNW, you should know and respect the Elderberry Crone! Within each Elder tree, lives a powerful old, crone who guards over her wood & berries. This is why elder wood bleeds red sap & her berries bleed, too. You must follow strict guidelines when harvesting Elder wood or berries, so as not to anger this witch, follow this simple guideline:

1. Make an Offering of Tobacco, Song or Healing to praise thy plant. 2. Take only what you need, always leave enough for the plant to recover and continue to produce. 3. Rule of Three Foraging ethics means no more than a 1/3 of any plant in an area or 1/3 of berries of any tree. 4. Ask Permission of the Elder Crone Humbly kneel before the Elder tree and say:

Snatum Kaur

Singing a new world into being. hanting has become my primary coping mechanism for this chaotic year. It is healthier than drinking and easier than meditating.

C

I discovered Snatum Kaur after our last Health Happy Hour on Friday the 13th last March. We had a powerful Abundance Honey ritual with Sharon Balsamo at the People’s Apothecary. During the ritual, suddenly tears were streaming down my face sensing what was to come and mourning that this might be our last healers gathering for awhile. When I went to sleep that night, I felt anxious, I couldn’t settle in. I found this chant by Snatum Kaur on Youtube: Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Say So Hung It soothed me to sleep like a lullaby. Next day, I found more of her chants and bought her new book, Original Light it helped me so much! Snatum had a unique childhood, singing Kirtan in Sikh temples with her mother, she was raised on these mystical chants. She would go on to become a grammy nominated musician with over 25 albums on Spirit Voyage records. She offered a free 40 day Prosperity chant every morning online that was a fundraiser

for two amazing programs soulfirefarm.org and yogaforyouth.com. I did this every morning instead of watching the news. It was inspiring to chant with people from around the world, Brazil, India, Europe, South America, Australia, all over the globe, tuning in, chanting and praying for us all. This was such a generous gift Snatum Kaur gave us freely, when the 40 days were over, she kept on singing every morning, same time, creating a powerful, healing space for us to be in. It became my refuge. She encouraged us to leave our problems on the altar, allow space for the light to enter and I always felt better afterwards. I am so grateful for her teachings. She offers Kundalini classes online & I aspire to take them this Fall! Snatumkaur.com bendhealthguide.com | BEND HEALTH GUIDE

DINACHARYA

This practice of daily rhythm, can make a profound difference to your health

SET YOURSELF UP TO GET A GOOD NIGHT OF SLEEP. The foundation for a good day starts the night before. An early, light dinner improves sleep quality. Science shows deep sleep is difficult with a full stomach. Try to be in bed by 10pm before late night snack cravings kick in.

WAKE UP EARLY. Before 6am to give yourself time to be still and quiet. Wake up 5 minutes earlier to start your day with quiet intention, prayer, meditation, take a walk or think about something you are grateful for. There are apps such as 10% happier and Insight Timer.

TONGUE SCRAPE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING. Overnight, ama gathers on your tongue, a coating of white or yellow residue. Gently scrape your tongue from the back forward for 7 strokes.

START THE DAY DRINKING WARM WATER. ..and give yourself time to have a full bowel movement before rushing off! Overnight, we become dehydrated. Drinking water washes the GI tract, flushes kidneys, and stimulates peristalsis.

EAT WHEN YOUR DIGESTIVE FIRE IS ITS STRONGEST. Ayurveda encourages us to eat our largest meal in the middle of the day when our digestion is strongest. Opt for seasonal, high-nutrient foods.

DRY BRUSH OR MASSAGE YOUR BODY EVERY DAY. Before you get dressed in the morning, rub your hands or a dry brush over your body. Lightly towel off after you shower, keep moisture on your skin, use warm sesame oil. ENJOY AN ACTIVITY GETS YOUR BLOOD PUMPING! Find a way to be in your body, get your heart rate up and take in more breath this will enable better concentration, creativity and drive. I like to teach about the principle of Kaizen which basically means regular small incremental changes will add up over time. I'd love to hear how things are going for you! Garden Betty

IN THE KITCHEN WITH

POTLICKER NOODLES WITH COLLARD GREENS From The No Waste Vegetable Cookbook By Garden Betty aka Linda Ly

P

otlikker is a Southern term for the liquid produced from greens, be it turnip, mustard, or collards. The liquid is rich with vitamins that leach out of the greens during the cooking process. Southern folklore says doctors

prescribed potlikker for any number of ailments, including colic and anemia. This bitter broth is high in iron, calcium, vitamins A, C and K.

• 12 ounces (340 g) dried egg noodles • 4 bacon strips, finely chopped • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 8 collard leaves • 4 crimini mushrooms • 3 cups potlikker from Greens • Lemon wedges for serving • Grated Parmesan cheese

32

BEND HEALTH GUIDE | Fall 2020

Boil and cook egg noodles, drain and set aside. Heat a large pot over medium high heat. Add bacon, fry until fat is rendered. Add onion and garlic cook until onion becomes translucent, 2 to 3 minutes. Add collard greens and mushrooms, cook til tender. Pour in potlikker and heat through. To serve, divide noodles among four bowls and top with equal amounts of vegetables and potlikker. Squeeze a wedge of lemon over each bowl and sprinkle parmesan.

COLLARD GREENS • 2 pounds (900 g) collard greens • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil • 1 yellow onion, chopped • 4 garlic cloves, chopped • 1 ½ pounds (680 g) smoked ham hocks or smoked ham • shanks • 8 cups (1.9 L) water • 1/3 cup (80 ml) cider vinegar • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper • Salt to taste • Southern Hot Pepper Vinegar Slow simmered collard greens and savory smoked ham go hand in hand. Prepare collard greens, trim thick, rigid stems from the leaves. Slice stems thick on the diagonal. Stack leaves on top of each other, roll lengthwise into a tight cigar. Slice them crosswise about. Repeat until you have a mountain of collard ribbons. In a wide, heavy pot over medium high heat, add oil, onion, and garlic, cook until onion is translucent, 2 to 3 minutes. Add ham hocks, water, vinegar, red

33

BEND HEALTH GUIDE | Fall 2020

pepper flakes, and black pepper, stir to combine, increase heat to high. Add handfuls of collard leaves and stems, push them down into the liquid, as they soften, add more handfuls. By the time the pot reaches a boil, all collards should be submerged in liquid. Reduce heat, cover, simmer, stir until leaves are wilted, stems are tender, and cooking liquid tastes smoky and earthy, about 1 hour. Remove ham hocks from the pot, pull meat off the bones. Finely chop meat, stir it back into the pot and heat through. Serve with a drizzle of Southern Hot Pepper Vinegar.

Purpose Stones I

have been sensitive to energy most of my life. I could feel the negative energies of people and environments around me and it took me years to realize that what I was feeling wasn't mine. I wanted to find a way to connect with people and harness that energy for my well-being and for the betterment of the planet. In 2016, I was at a military base selling industrial products as I had for 20+ years. My client noticed my high stress level and, in the middle of my presentation, he placed a piece of selenite in my hands. After only a few minutes I felt so much better. I didn't know anything about selenite or any crystals for that matter so he insisted I stop on my way home and purchase some. This is how it all began. Spirit compelled me to learn all about stones and the energies they provide for our healing and well-being. Which led me to create the beautiful healing-stone jewelry that I hand-make with intention and purpose. What I believed was a curse has now become a gift and ability to help others by providing spiritual life coaching sessions, tools to manage and clear the negative energies of others and environments and powerful pieces to wear to assist as well. This strong passion for helping children and animals gets stronger every day. I am so grateful to have found my life's purpose: using stones to help others stand in their own purpose and power, lift away energies that no longer serve them, and assist them in creating prosperous, loving and joyful lives.

TAMING ENERGY

BO OK By Natalie Cutsforth

Review

S

ensitivity is not always having a stressful response in the mind, body or emotions to situations you encounter. Many sensitives are reading energy around them by feeling it in their body. This activates a stress response because it disrupts their own senses—creating doubt and distrust for the signals from their inner guidance. Energy sensitives, also known as empaths, often navigate life not understanding this. In Tame Your Energy Sensitivity, a tiger teaches sensitive people that you can reclaim trust in your senses when you understand your true nature.

See what they are saying about "Taming Energy." AMANDA STUERMER

JENNIFER HOUSTON

ANN CASCELLA

Founder of the World Muse Foundation Bend, OR

The Red Balloon Project | Bend, OR

Interior Decorator | Denver, CO

"This book offers a wonderful set of tools and skills for empaths/energy sensitive people. Those of us who are sensitive feel overwhelmed by others and lose our confidence in our own intuition and inner guidance. Natalie Cutsforth provides compassionate, practical guidance for navigating energies of the external world and teaches us how to get in touch with gifts of being an empath. Truly, sensitivity is something to honor and celebrate! This book reminded me of my own inherent wisdom and the power of following my own soul's compass."

"Natalie does a great job of first understanding and explaining what a sensitive person feels and goes through. She gives a simple step by step guide to navigate energy around you and within you in a healthy and fulfilling manner. I've worked with Natalie for years and it has been immensely helpful . This book gives me the tools to navigate and set healthy boundaries for myself."

"My 17 year old daughter and I both read Natalie's book. It really is a perfect tool to share during these times. My favorite part is how she makes the lessons and the practices so simple and accessible. I’ve called on them quite a few times recently. A global pandemic combined with a social revolution has understandably generated extremely heightened energies: fear, shame, grief, rage. Protecting our own energy field is more important than ever."

The Great Conjunction is Coming... By Terie Sandusky Photo by Annelie Kahn

S

aturn Pluto Conjunction 01/12/2020 in Capricorn brought about profound shifts in 2020. Wherever Capricorn is in your chart, is where you've been affected most this year, career, relationships, health, etc. The Capricorn Stellium this year is indicative of a Mountain Goat climbing a steep, rocky ridge with obstacles, restrictions and rules. This complex, metamorphic energy is building up in intensity until December 21, Winter Solstice when we have Saturn conjunct Jupiter at Zero Degrees of Aquarius and so it begins... The Great Conjunction transcends the challenges of this year, we leave Capricorn difficulties behind as we finally move forward into an Age of Aquarius, a new paradigm. It relates to a rise and fall of royalty, leaders and people in power. Throughout history leaders met their demise, Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy both were assassinated, Franklin Roosevelt died of Cerebral Hemorrhage during past Saturn Jupiter Conjunctions. This conjunction calls for profound transformations for us all, surrender or be dragged! If you accept change and go with the flow, 2021 can be a time to emerge with even greater success and prosperity! Look for solutions not problems to fare better. If you dream it, you can achieve it with the right mindset. We've seen businesses pivot in powerful ways to sustain their livelihood, even increased growth. Businesses that cling to old ways of doing things and don't progress forward may not survive this new era. For myself, it has been a soul searching time. When you risk your life to do your job, you think about how much you want to do it, like the great book, "Your money or your Life." I'm teaching small, safe Reiki classes, giving Distance Reiki, Energy Clearing Sessions and doing Astrology charts. I am getting my Real Estate License, something I've always wanted to do! Saturn in Aquarius in 2021 wants you to clear out old baggage holding you back, tidy up, get rid of your clutter, get rid of worn out things, let go of any deadwood that

isn't serving you. Shed your past to make room for a whole new life. Clear your mind of negative thought patterns. Clear your heart, raise your energetic vibration to LOVE. Clear your path ahead to create something brand new. It's a good time for Space Clearing & Energy Clearing in 2021, two of my specialties! Saturn in Aquarius is an ideal time for manifesting within a Community, so we will see more co-working and co-housing. I hope to create a BHG Community Healing Space. In Ayurvedic Astrology, I was born under the Nakshatra Satabhisha, known as the 100 Healers Star. It is my destiny to bring healers together for the wellbeing of our community. What is your destiny for 2021? It is written in the stars! Get your Astrology chart for 2021 and see. If you want to learn more, follow my Blog at kimimihealingarts.com
