School Leaders' Forward

This year, we celebrate 45 years of the school’s founding.

In 2020, the pandemic hit and FHBL was implemented. Bendemeer was able to continue with minimal disruptions because we went on board the Personal Learning Device (PLD) pilot programme in 2019. Seizing the opportunity to be on board the pilot programme has helped us.

In 2021, we were among the Phase 1 schools in the National Digital Learning Programme. In order for the PLD to be part of our learning routines there is a need to seize this new opportunity, explore the possibilities and make it work for us. The school has already started preliminary plans on creating an ICT Ecosystem that will not only enhance students’ learning experience but also equip them with necessary digital literacy skills.

This year the school commenced the phasing in of Blended Learning. Blended Learning enriches our students’ educational experience by enabling

them to benefit from multiple modes of learning. This includes the integration of Home-Based Learning as a regular part of students’ schooling experience so that they have more opportunities to learn in an independent, self-directed manner. In addition, time and space is provided for students to explore their areas of interests by initiating learning activities on their own during such days. This is an exciting opportunity which will instill the joy of learning in our students.

At the same time, there is a task-force set up to look into the implementation of Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB) in 2023. FSBB is part of MOE’s ongoing efforts to nurture the joy of learning and develop multiple pathways to cater to the different strengths and interests of our students. With FSBB, we are moving towards a secondary school education where students learn each subject at the level that best caters to their overall strengths, interests and learning needs. Under FSBB, students will no longer be streamed into the Express, N(A), and N(T) courses and will

be in mixed form classes where they can interact with peers of different strengths and interests.

These are very exciting national initiatives that we will be embarking on. However, there will be implementation challenges that we need to overcome together as a school. When students and staff open their minds and co-create these together, they will realise that the possibilities are endless.

Bendemeer continued to do well in all educational domains as an institution of quality learning. Despite the challenging year, the 2021 cohort of graduating students continued to demonstrate the school values, Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Care and Harmony, in working with all their teachers, the HODs and school leaders to perform to the best of their abilities. Through their hard work and sheer determination, they have achieved value-added results and performed well in both GCE N-level and O-level examinations.

Mr. Chen Fook Pang Principal

education remains healthy with increasingly more Bendemeerians being accepted into Polytechnics through the various progression pathway such as the Early Admission Exercise (EAE), Polytechnic Foundation Program (PFP), Direct Entry Scheme to Polytechnic Program (DPP).

In 2021, more than 75% of the Sec 4 Express and Sec 5 Normal (Academic) students participated in the EAE, and almost 40% of those who applied were successful in their application and secured places in the polytechnics even before they sat for their GCE O-level examination. As for the Sec 4

Normal (Technical) cohort, three quarters of our students participated in the EAE ITE, and about two thirds of these students were successful in their application. All of these would not have been possible without Bendemeer’s caring and committed staff. The strong culture of care in the school is built on the foundation of positive relationships. This should not be taken for granted and can continue to be strengthened by having a clear purpose and actions that are guided by values.

In the next few years, there will be new initiatives that need to be implemented in response to global trends and the changing education landscape. We will keep an open mind as a school and embark on the journey to prepare our students to be future ready.

The collective efforts of school staff and partners have enhanced the Bendemeer experience over the years. The Executive & Administration Support team led the way in its day-to-day support of ensuring that students’ well-being remained at the center of all its work. The team members have worked tirelessly behind the scenes and sacrificed some of their personal time in this endeavor.

The school’s internal stakeholders, the School Advisory Committee (SAC), Alumni and Parent Support Group (PSG) remain

committed to providing opportunities for staff and students. Although SAC goes through renewal of terms, those who have ended their terms remain as Friends of SAC and as valuable members of the Bendemeer family. Mr James Ng is one such example. We look forward to the SAC’s continued and invaluable support.

The PSG is made up of a team of very dedicated parents who bring an amazing amount of energy to the school and we are very appreciative of their involvement in various school events. Despite their busy schedules, they have always responded to our requests to reach out to other parents, especially as a bridge to relay announcements. This year, they have also organised and contributed generously to Parent/Child bonding activities, such as Breakfast with Parents.

In the past 5 years, members of the Alumni, led by the President of the Executive Committee, Mr Delane Lim, have supported the school in many ways. More recently, last year, they donated PLD sleeves for students and Mr Lim himself donated 100 ART Kits for students who needed them. With the current trajectory of Safe Management Measures, we are looking forward to resuming our annual participation in the Youth Global Summit and Bendemeer Family Day.

Kolam Ayer CC’s partnership with us is long standing. For over 20 years, they have provided numerous opportunities through various platforms for Bendemeerians to be involved in CC activities. Such experiences instill school values and have a lasting impact on our students. We are looking forward to more faceto-face collaborations in celebrating the constituency’s national events.

Our partnership with Institutes of Higher Learning has benefited Bendemeerians in many ways. Education & Career Guidance engagements and Learning Journeys are important components of our CoCurriculum. Together with Elective Modules and Advanced Elective Modules, students are provided with the right combination of theoretical and hands-on knowledge to enable them to discover and pursue their individual strengths and interests.

In addition, partners like the Tchoukball Association of Singapore, NYAA, FAS, CDC, PA, Mendaki, CDAC and SINDA have also contributed to our students’ holistic development and we are looking to resume face-to-face engagements with these partners too.

In Bendemeer Secondary, we believe that every student can shine and achieve his or her potential, anchored on our strong mission to build character, nurture learners and serve the community. The fruits of the collective efforts of our teachers and students have made us distinctive and have sustained the Bendemeer Heartbeat. The support that our partners have provided in helping our students have shaped their lives. Our sustained collaborations with the larger community that have stretched for more than a decade have helped many Bendemeerians to grow holistically and carve a niche for themselves in society. An area that we want to strengthen is to enhance staff professional development and well-being through our collaborations with partners. The greatest strength of the school is the team of caring, committed and dedicated teachers. With a shared philosophy that “all students are unique individuals with talents”, the staff continue to guide our students to discover their strengths and achieve to the best of their potential. This established culture of care in the school endears students to their teachers, and spurs them to live by the school motto ‘From Each His Best’.

A Fond Farewell

Mr Remington Chen Fook Pang served as Principal of Bendemeer Secondary School from 2017 to 2022. He has touched the lives of numerous Bendemeerians, students and staff alike, in the years he was here, empowering many with his leadership style and philosophies.

A strategic and forward-looking individual, Mr Chen brought about many significant changes to the school, paving a number of pathways forward for staff and students to embark on, and ultimately, helped see Bendemeer Secondary through the difficult weeks, months and years of the Covid-pandemic. Due to his foresight, he was able to accelerate the staff’s competencies with regard to ICT-enabled lessons and 1-to-1 access to ICT-enabled devices in 2019, thus helping everyone go through the tedious processes of Full HomeBased Learning in 2020 with relative ease. Beyond that tumultuous period, Mr Chen was pivotal in setting the school’s direction ahead as we prepared ourselves for nation-wide National Digital Literacy Programme. As such, Mr Chen’s leadership has been deemed instrumental in charting our school’s strategic thrusts to meet the ever-evolving educational landscape in recent years.

Apart from his keen awareness, Mr Chen has touched the hearts and minds of countless individuals with his great sense of care. He is a genuine individual who prioritises one’s health and mental well-being, demonstrating much understanding and kindness to both staff and students alike. He checks in regularly with staff members, and interacts frequently with many students despite his busy schedule. During the heightened pandemic period, he made every effort to ensure that our staff and students stayed safe and

The Bendemeer family would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Mr Tan Bak Cheng for 35 years of dedicated service to Bendemeer Secondary School. The staff and students at Bendemeer Secondary School are saddened by his departure for he has been a wonderful colleague, a nurturing mentor, and a caring teacher. However, the school is also glad that he will now have the opportunity to rest, recharge and enjoy the fruits of his labour.

Mr Tan has been a pillar of knowledge, strength and support for many staff and students in Bendemeer Secondary School. The school is privileged to have had him serve as a Head of Department, leading and guiding the staff on various fronts, especially in the areas of PE and CCA. The PE department and the various CCA groups have benefitted greatly from his foresight in making key decisions that benefit the school and the students greatly. Beyond that, his professionalism in managing the various roles assigned to him has been exemplary, making him an excellent role model for both staff and students. His leadership, knowledge and expertise on various matters have made him an indispensable leader at many school events such the Annual Speech Day and Limelight Concert. He has guided and groomed many staff members of Bendemeer Secondary School, sharing with them much wisdom and experience that he has accumulated over the many years of service. He will also be missed by members of the Bendemeer Secondary School Alumni, many whom were once his students.

The culture of care that he exemplified through his words and actions will continue to live on in Bendemeer. Happy retirement Mr Tan!

A Fond Farewell

Even though it’s only been a short two years in Bendemeer, I leave this place with a heavy heart. I am thankful to the school leaders and management for being so understanding and nurturing. They have given various opportunities to learn and contribute to the school. As a young teacher, I enjoyed and valued the autonomy I had to try out new ideas and initiatives. I am also blessed to have worked alongside a very dedicated team of teachers who go above and beyond for our students. They have inspired and challenged me to become a better teacher. Most of all, I will miss my students. It has been a joy teaching such a lively, caring and fun-loving bunch, and I wish nothing but the very best for them. Bendemeer will always hold a special place in my heart.

It is with mixed feelings that I am writing this farewell message. BDMS is the third school I have taught in and by far, the happiest! Leaving the teaching fraternity leads to exciting times ahead but it also involves having to say goodbye to all my dear colleagues and students. I am happy not having to get up at 5am to be in school before 7am but at the same time sad that I will miss BDMS. I want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation to the school leaders for their understanding and guidance, my colleagues for their care and concern and their assistance especially in IT matters, and also my dear students who have been a joy to teach on the whole. Everyone here has been so kind, friendly and caring and for that, I want to say a big ‘Thank you’ to all! Warmest regards.

To me, Bendemeer Sec is a place that I fondly call as my second home. I have spent my youth here as a student, then came back as a staff member, where I grew and started taking my baby steps into the workforce and adulthood.

I would also like to show my appreciation to my fellow colleagues in the General Office who have been very supportive and accommodating to my lesson schedules when I was pursuing my part-time degree.

Bendemeer Secondary will always hold a special place in my heart. A big thank you to my Bendemeer Family! Cheers.

Bendemeer has provided me with a nurturing learning environment for me to grow as a teacher. I am grateful to my colleagues, the management team and school leaders for guiding and supporting me throughout my journey, not forgetting the friendships that we have forged. Thank you for being patient with me as I reflect on trying to be a better teacher. Quoting from our school song “Bendemeer, always in our hearts…” I will miss the camaraderie we shared in this family but this is certainly not a farewell – let’s stay in touch. To my students, thank you for inspiring me with your resilience and care for your friends, family and teachers (including me!). May all of you do your best to blossom into wonderful young adults and make a difference to the lives of others just like how you have impacted mine - From Each His Best! Stay in touch.

Welcome to the Bendemeer Family

Reflections

Time flies. I was filled with anxieties when I learnt that I was posted to BDMS. My anxieties were reduced day by day as the school environment is safe and welcoming for staff. It is really good to see teacher interacting with students and vice versa along the corridor, inside classroom and outside classroom. The vibrant and nurturing environment has made students feel free to look for teachers and also to experiment and fail. I salute my colleagues here and strive to be like them, available to students, and constantly encouraging, supporting, and challenging them. It has been a fulfilling year. I thank God for that.

In the blink of an eye, I have been here for almost a year. Being a returning teacher, there are so many things that I needed to learn and I am thankful to all my friendly and helpful colleagues and school leaders who have helped me to grow, learn and settle into into this wonderful family.

I am thankful for the opportunity given to me in Bendemeer Secondary School. The staff here has been very supportive and accommodating, which helped the transition to a new school environment a lot smoother.

I have learnt a lot in the past year, not just from the teachers but the students as well, understanding the needs and concerns that students have and adjusting the way I can help them best in their development.

The past year in Bendemeer has been exciting especially with the easing of covid-19 restrictions; more activities have been resuming. The teachers here have been very welcoming and supportive. Like a famous saying in Tamil, knowledge obtained is like the size of our hand and what we have yet to learn is as big as the world. This past year has been a great learning experience and I am looking forward to more in the upcoming years.

Looking back at the year, I thought I could at least sum it up using some adjectives:

Fast and furious. The academic terms’ duration are short but the pace is really intense. To me, time really waits for no one and as such I learned to treasure it even more. At times, I also find it a bit unbelievable that we have accomplished so much within such a short span of time.

Rich - the year has provided me with varied experiences which makes our life enriching and interesting. I enjoyed interacting with staff and students during major festive/ school events and in the process I also got to know our students better. One of the many school events which I enjoyed very much is the “Milestone Walk”. I treasure the opportunity given to me to make this event a successful one.

Grateful - when I first joined the school, I did feel a lot of anxiety and apprehension. For example, I realized that there are many unfamiliar faces and I had trouble trying to get to know the staff in the school. However, I am really grateful for the kind words of reassurance, encouragement and assistance that I have received from School Leaders, KPs and colleagues which helped

Joyful News

to ease my anxiety and helped me to get used to the new environment. I would also like to appreciate the good work done by the School Welfare Committee especially, for providing us with wonderful refreshments to ensure that we are “recharged” and ready for the long day ahead.

Lastly, I feel that my journey here is just a beginning and a never ending learning process. And I enjoyed the process of learning together with my colleagues at Bendemeer as we strive to tackle new challenges ahead. And I hope that in this process, I could continue to build and forge stronger relationships with my colleagues.

2022 marked a new journey for me in a new school- Bendemeer Secondary. After being in my alma mater for eleven years, I needed a change as I like new challenges and new environment. Call it an itch… Bendemeer is my fourth school! I decided to come to Bendemeer as it is not an entirely unknown environment as I already knew a few people as well as all the good things my sister told me about when she was here teaching in Bendemeer. In a way, it is something new yet familiar at the same time.

So far my experience here has been a good one and the students and staff are friendly and I am pleasantly surprised at how well behaved and disciplined the students are too. This is a mark of a good school culture which I am now proud to be a member of. As covid measures are slowly loosened, I am expecting a richer experience with activities and trips with the students which were hampered by Covid.

As a further celebration of a memorable 2022, I also welcomed my baby girl in September! May the good times continue!

We would like to congratulate the following staff on the birth of their children.

Congratulations!

Secondary One Orientation

Our Secondary One students were welcomed into the school with much enthusiasm and zeal. They were immersed in the myriad activities lined up for them right from the start of Week 1, be it in sports trials or the performing arts tryouts. The Student Leaders had an array of fun-filled and exciting activities for the students to get accustomed to the new surroundings as well as get to know their peers.

The students participated in several ice-breaking games and activities which allowed them to bond with their classmates and their peers, with the Student Leaders and seniors sharing their personal school experiences with them.

Academic Achievements

The GCE N level results were released on 17 December 2021, while the GCE O level results for 2021 were released on 12 January 2022. The Mid-Year O level Mother Tongue results for 2022 were released on 18 August 2022.

Our school has continued to deliver value-added results and our students have done the school proud by maintaining a high level of progression to post-secondary school institutions. Our Sec 4 Express students have done well, with a large percentage of them eligible for junior college and polytechnic education. Likewise, our Sec 4 Normal (Academic) and Sec 4 Normal (Technical) students have attained credible GCE N level passes and progressed to their post-secondary education institutions.

We would like to thank all teachers and non-teaching staff for helping our N-level and O-level students over the past four to five years. This support has been crucial to helping them achieve credible results and be able to progress to the next stage of their education.

We congratulate all our graduating students and wish them all the best for their future endeavours.

Pongal Festival Celebration

The teachers in the Tamil unit of the Mother Tongue department organised the Pongal Festival celebration on 17 January. Together with the school foyer being decorated with vibrant Rangoli designs and traditional decorations, the school population was given snippets of the significance of celebrating this occasion as well as food prepared by some of the teachers.

21

Chinese New Year Celebration

Owing to the current pandemic situation, this year’s Chinese New Year was celebrated quite differently from previous years. Students were in class with their Form Teachers and had their chance of learning how to make some handicrafts demonstrated by teachers from the

Mother Tongue Department, as well as having the celebrations streamed live via Zoom. Students also played some Kahoot games and got a chance to eat together as a class. The highlight of the celebrations came about when our very own “God of Fortune” went around the academic blocks

to bring joy and candies to the different classes, with traditional Chinese New Year songs playing in the background to add on to the festive mood and celebrations.

The celebration continued with a ‘Lou Hei’ session for all staff on 7 February.

45 th Speech Day and Prize Presentation Ceremony

Bendemeer Secondary School’s 45th Speech Day and Prize Presentation Ceremony was celebrated with pomp on 14 April 2022. Professor Captain Francis Frederick James graced the occasion as the Guest-of-Honour. Both our former Vice-Principals, Ms Jeya and Mr Poon also took time off to grace the occasion.

After the ceremonial march-in of the state and school flags, accompanied by the school band, the ceremony commenced with speeches by Mr Chen Fook Pang, Vice Principals Mr Mohd Azman and Mr Chrys Ho and our GOH. Due to the pandemic, the students were in class with their Form Teachers to witness the entire ceremony, via live streaming with the Student Leaders and Prize Winners gathering in the hall. During the prize giving ceremony, students, staff and school partners were given recognition for their achievements and contributions to the school.

The ceremony was interspersed with performances by students from 1C8 showcasing the circus skills they acquired during their BEE programme, as well as a lively dance performance by the school dancers. Our GOH also unveiled the “Precious in our Hands” sculpture donated to the school.

Student Leaders Investiture

On 20 May, the school bore witness to an important milestone for the student leaders representing the various classes, CCAs and the Student Council. The Student Leader Investiture 2022 took place at the school hall with both cohorts of incoming and outgoing student leaders in attendance, along with various teachers and school leaders. The ceremony was also broadcast live via Zoom to the rest of the school population. The Student Leaders Investiture aimed at recognising the selfless contribution and service that the outgoing student leaders had provided to the school. It also marked the passing of the leadership baton to the new batch of student leaders, impressing upon them the immense responsibility they were undertaking and to take pride in it. This was represented in the simple yet solemn gestures of badge presentation to the Class Chairpersons, passing of symbolic memorabilia of various CCAs between the student leader cohorts, flags for the Uniform Groups and the official school blazers for the Student Council President and Vice-Presidents. Lastly, the investiture ended with the new student leader cohort leading the school to recite The Bendemeerian Code.

War & Diplomacy

After a three-year absence, the War & Diplomacy game was back! Aimed at familiarising and reinforcing History concepts, the card game pitted the players against each other, letting them take on roles of political characters of World War II, trying to eliminate each

other to be the last one standing. Unfortunately the game was only restricted to our own Secondary Three students this year, instead of the annual tournament involving all schools in Singapore. Let’s hope we can host the game for all other schools soon!

27

Racial Harmony Day

There was definitely a buzz of excitement on 21 July. It had been two years since we last celebrated Racial Harmony Day in style, literally. Once again, students and staff were encouraged to dress in traditional costumes and it was indeed galore of colours on display! Needless to say, both staff and students took the opportunity to take countless pictures to commemorate this special day celebrating our nation’s unique multiracialism.

28

Breakfast with Parents

After more than 2 years of hiatus due to COVID restrictions, the PSG brought back their signature programme “Breakfast with Parents” on 21 July 2022 in conjunction with the school’s celebration of Racial Harmony Day. The responses from parents

were overwhelming and they prepared a generous spread of food for the students to enjoy during their recesses. Thank you, dear PSG, for your generosity and support!

Graduation Assembly/ Milestone Walk

With fewer SMM restrictions this year, another major school event that was reinstated was the Milestone Walk. This is one of the most meaningful events marking the coming-of-age of the Bendemeerians just before they graduate from school. The graduating cohort celebrated this significant milestone with a

special Graduation Assembly, followed by breakfast with staff before commencing on the walk. Marching as one, the graduating students and staff embarked on a scenic city hike through some of Singapore’s landmarks such as Fort Canning Hill and Singapore River, eventually finishing at Marina Bay.

Teacher's Day Celebration and Lunch

1 September marked the day that teachers and students alike were anticipating – Teacher’s Day! This year’s celebration was especially memorable as it was the first time in more than two years that the whole school population had gathered together at the school hall. An air of excitement exuberated through the hall as students showed their appreciation for their beloved teachers through a series of performances. All the staff were then treated to a sumptuous lunch at Holiday Inn Atrium.

Applied Learning Programme

In Health Science and Healthcare technology

Our Applied Learning Programme (ALP) seeks to deepen students’ knowledge in STEM education where students solve authentic problems in health sciences and healthcare using technology.

Students will go through a series of lessons which uses the Inquiry approach, leveraging on the 3Es (Engage, Explore and Elaborate). In the first phase of the inquiry model, students are engaged through fostering an interest in authentic contexts in Singapore. The problem-based learning (PBL) approach will expose our students to real world healthcare problems facing the elderly in Singapore today.  They use problem-based learning approach to conduct case analysis, research and present on the possible solutions for healthcare issues. The joy of learning is promoted via experiential learning with Science Practical activities, where students analyse and interpret the data collected to further understand the issues at hand.

Testing for glucose in urine samples
42
Analysing the healthcare issues using the Problem Based Learning approach

Our students also develop logical and computational thinking that improve their digital literacy. In Sec 1, students learn the fundamentals of micro:bit block based programming to code and create reaction games. Our Sec 2 students explore emerging technology such as Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to build a smart home for the elderly.

In the elaboration phase, students apply knowledge and skills acquired from the learning experiences in the earlier phases to develop viable solutions through a

prototype. In collaboration with D&T unit, students continue to modify their prototypes during their D&T lesson and selected artefacts are presented to St. Luke’s eldercare to encourage the elderly to be more active.

Selected Sec 3 students are involved in development of application and related STEM competition. The ALP programme ultimately cultivates a spirit of enterprise in students through innovative solutions and prototypes to address healthcare issues in current landscapes using technology.

Students enjoy collaborating in groups to design and build their prototypes through mathematical precision and engineering.

BEE Programme

Bendemeerian Experience (BEE) Programme is a signature programme for diverse learners in Bendemeer Secondary. Through this programme, students can build their confidence as they learn new skills and discover their interests and talents. Through the engaging activities, student develop values such as care, respect and resilience.

In Term 1, students either learn balloon sculpting or circus skills. For balloon sculpting, students develop resilience as they practised for weeks, in spite of their fears of popping balloons, to put up a beautiful balloon display that framed the stage for our school’s Speech Day 2022. As they pick up circus skills, students had to persevere to practise the circus acts to perfection and overcome their stage fright to perform live on stage for Speech Day.

In Term 3, students learnt either fencing or skateboarding. For fencing, students were exposed to a new sport that many had not had the opportunity to experience before. For skateboarding, students delved deeper into their interests and persevered to attempt skateboarding tricks and styles.

After School Engagement Programme

As part of the After School Engagement (ASE) Programme, the Haven (ASE Center) is designed to provide a safe place for students to do their homework and to chill out with their friends after school hours. There is a variety of games in Haven to engage the students- Xbox, Table Soccer and board games. We have an external youth worker, the Student Welfare Officer and the School Counsellor to assist in coordinating the activities conducted during the ASE Programme. The ASE Programme runs from Monday to Thursday, 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Activities conducted aim mainly to equip the students with leadership

and social skills. Activities that were conducted in 2022 includes badminton, soccer, trampoline, bowling, cooking, crafts making, painting, mural painting and movie screening. With guidance from the youth worker, the students had also organised a ASE Teachers’ Day Party and invited their teachers to join in the celebration. The students had an enjoyable time of bonding with their teachers by serving them food and playing games with them. We look forward to another year of more fun activities and stronger peer bonding during ASE Programme.

After 2 years of hiatus, this year Badminton training resumed, even though at a controlled manner. Pairs and groups of 4 could play but were not allowed to intermingle till term 2. Our members were overjoyed at this opportunity to play again from Term 3 and basically have fun.

The competitions planned for Sec 4 and 5 were also put on hold for this year to allow everything to return to normalcy.

Training sessions were held every Tuesday with all of our members from Upper Secondary from 4-6pm. This year also saw a very large cohort from 4R8 and 5R1 graduating students. They played enthusiastically and kept attending sessions even after they stood down to relax themselves.

All our members thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and used it to release some stress from their studies. CCA members agreed the fun and non-competitive aspects of the training was what they cherished most and should be continued yearly.

Reflections

From my experience as the Captain of Badminton, its is delightful to compete against fellow CCA mates and friends. Being able to come together and practice may be one of the most joyful things I could have asked for.

This year in 2022, the Bendemeer School Choir participated in school events such as Chinese New Year Concert, Speech Day and Teachers’ Day Concert as well as in a public performance ‘Voices of Singapore Festival 2022’ at Chijmes on 6 September 2022.

Performances at the beginning of this year was the same as the past two years, the concert performances for Chinese New Year and Speech Day in the first half of the year were virtual performances. Choir members had to individually record their parts before coming together virtually to record their performance for the school. Virtual performances had become very

Reflections

Since the pandemic began, this VOS 2022 performance was our first time performing live as a whole choir and with an audience. I am proud we were able to finally show our strengths and what we have been training for, it makes me feel that it’s really worthwhile.

much of the Choir members’ presentations of their repertoires for the past two years. In September for Teacher’s Day Concert, we were finally allowed to perform in front of the audiences.

The public performance ‘Voices of Singapore 2022’ at Chijmes on 6 September 2022 was truly a memorable experience for many Choir members, especially since it was their first public performance after easing of the Covid-19 community measures and since they joined Bendemeer Secondary School in 2020. The Choir members trained hard for this performance, including attending an enrichment workshop on 5 September 2022 in school. They have been looking forward to this public performance & impressed many with their powerful vocals.

It has been an enriching experience for our Choir members and we look forward to presenting more interesting repertoires in the upcoming performances in 2023 during Sec 1 Orientation, Chinese New Year Celebrations (in school and in Kolam Ayer Community Club), Speech Day and Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation 2023.

Reflections

Throughout my past years in choir, it really brought me comfort every single session to be able to sing, learn and have fun with everyone. Choir has also trained me to be confident in who I am and responsible towards my own learning.

Because of the pandemic, we were not able to have proper cca sessions for almost two years. I was rather unprepared on the day we returned to normal, being unable to perform to my usual standards. However, with perseverance and the help of the conductors, I managed to get back on my feet and perform once again.

I feel that our regular training sessions are the best experiences for me. We treat each other as family and always help whenever we can. It is a time where we are lively yet serious during choir training. We all share the same bond - which is our love for singing which brings us closer. The memories and experiences are unforgettable.

In this choir, I have overcomed my fear and gain confidence in speaking in front of the audience in the concert. The encouragement from the teachers, conductor and pianist helped me through that experience. Choir has helped me to grow and become who I am now.

Chong Tong En (3R3)

Our largest-scale Chijmes performance was a very eye-opening. I believe that this experience has further boosted my confidence as we encouraged one another. In our choir, every senior trains a junior to ensure that they can reach their fullest potential in Choir. This requires good communications skills to understand and help the juniors, enhancing the strong bond between our members.

We started the year resuming physical band practices. This was something that we all looked forward to! The Sec 1’s joined us in term 2 with the graduating cohorts continuing to assist and guide the juniors till the end of Semester One. In Term 2, we also had our first performance – Speech Day. During the June holidays, we had a day camp. We had an enjoyable

time eating, playing games and practicing together. It was a great bonding session!

Semester 2 was just as enriching as we participated in more performances. Our drummers participated in the National Day Observance Ceremony at Kolam Ayer Community Club and the full band performed for the Teachers’ Day Concert. Some of our band members were also invited to perform in the Red Dot August with Novo Winds at Esplanade, led by our very own band instructor, Mr Joseph Teo. This collaboration was our first performance in 3 years and our band members did well despite their jitters!

The year will end with an exchange programme with Pierce Secondary school, bringing more learning opportunities for our band members. Looking forward to participate in more performances in 2023!

Reflections

Although things have been really tough during the one year of being a drum major, what always encourages me is seeing the happy faces of the band after their performances. I’m glad that members of the band were able to enjoy themselves when performing and it always gives me a sense of gratification.

I was very lucky to have been chosen to participate in the National Day performance. I have always wanted to perform at Esplanade and I got the opportunity. It was my first time performing at Esplanade and it was a good experience. Through the collaborations with other secondary schools and Novo Winds, I was able to enhance my skills in playing and music theory. It was a fun experience and one that was hard to come by.

The performance at Esplanade was very memorable, in that I have made many new friends from different schools and I learnt how to count rhythm in songs easier.

Performing at Esplanade has been one of my favourite experiences. It taught me many valuable lessons as I talked and performed with people I had never met before, but still was able to have lots of fun.

Cross Country

Mrs. Charmaine Tan

Coach:

Mr. S. Pandian

Captain: Klaus Tan (3R2)

Vice-Captain: Angel Yang (3R1)

This year, the school’s Cross-Country team has their strength and resilience stretched, in view of the pandemic situation and the significant changes that came along. While the team could finally resume on-site training, they had to do so while maintaining safe management measures (SMM). At the same time, the team welcomed their new coach, Mr S. Pandian, who uses his wealth of experience to help each member seek new horizons in their weekly training.

With SMM for large-scale competitions being relaxed, the team participated in the National Track and Field and the National School Games Cross Country Championships. What made this year’s competition experiences unique is that many members were given the opportunity to compete in at least one event. Such exposure inspired each member to continue striving hard for their individual and team goals during the training, as they prepare for next year’s events.

Reflections

Ever since I participated in the National School Games 200m event, I have become more disciplined and focused as I have a more explicit goal that I would like to strive hard to achieve in my future competitions. It is mostly about being able to deal with the pressure, pain and embracing the many inevitable challenges. Training may be tough and gruesome at times, thus it is important to come with a well-prepared mindset, knowing that motivation will not last for long. I personally believe that if you relentlessly put in hardwork in whatever you put your mind to, anything can be accomplished.

Cross Country requires high levels of selfdiscipline and resilience. Motivation never lasts forever, so it is important to have the discipline to train even when you do not feel like doing so. When preparing for my competitions, I have to get out of my comfort zone and do my own runs in my own free time, as we only have two training sessions in school per week, which are insufficient for me. During races, I have to remain strong and persevere to continue running, despite being tired or in pain, or even both! Indeed, resilience is tested to the maximum then, in which I have to push myself past my limit in order to achieve the best results possible for myself.

Partaking in the 4.6km race for Cross Country has made me realize that this CCA requires a lot of resilience. There were definitely times when I wanted to quit, but these were when my resilience was truly tested. I ignored the thoughts that told me to stop and focused on the set goal in mind, completing the race. However, this CCA is not all just about running, it is also about the friendships I have made here with my team mates, with whom I have very strong bonds over the years. Training together with my friends is an extremely fun experience, and I always look forward to every training sessions because of it.

Liz-Alva Ong (4R1)

2021 was a very difficult time for our dance club. After being on a hiatus for about two months following our End-of-Year exams, we were greeted with the news that our current instructor was leaving the club for a full-time job opportunity. With heavy hearts, we thanked him for his guidance and contribution during the past ten years and wished him the best in his future endeavours. After all, change is a constant!

We started year 2022 off with the Secondary 1 Orientation. We had a lot of fun assisting the relief coach in picking out some amazing talents. It was a challenging yet memorable experience as we did not get to help with auditions the previous year due to Covid-19.

After the orientation, we welcomed our new coach, Mr Traveen, to the club. The first performance we took on was during the Chinese New Year celebration. Within a short span of two weeks, we learned a whole new choreography and filmed our performance for the school to play during the celebrations. It was undeniably tough during those two weeks of training but seeing the results made it all worth it.

Shortly after, we started preparing for our Speech Day performance where we pleasantly surprised by the news that we get to perform on stage ‘live’! We were all so eager to finally perform in front of a ‘live’ audience after two long years. We trained tirelessly to give our best and it felt so amazing hearing the applause offstage.

We were also given the opportunity to perform ‘live’ during Teachers’ Day along

with our Sec 1s. The hardest challenge was to bond with our sec 1s as we did not get the chance to talk to them before due to the separate training sessions. We took time during our self-practice to have games and interactions to know more about them and strengthen the bond between us. We wasted no time to practise together whenever we can, cleaning up our steps to showing our appreciation for all our teachers through our dance.

Our team’s ups and downs, along with the values of perseverance, resilience, and respect that everyone in the team uphold, bond, and unite us. While 2022 proved to be a memorable and challenging year for our club, we will move forward as a strong, undefeated team, ready to welcome 2023, come what may.

Reflections

‘Dance to express, not to impress.’ This was the motto that was shared to us by the seniors when we first joined the club in Secondary 1. Dance has always been an important part of my life and I am glad that I stuck to my decision to be a dancer and join the Dance Club as my CCA in secondary school. Through all the tough trainings, I learnt important values such as resilience and perseverance, making me a stronger dancer. I am beyond grateful for my dance mates who have been constantly supporting me.

My time in the Dance Club so far has been very memorable and impactful to my life. I first joined the CCA when I was in Secondary 1 back in 2020. The club has been through many challenges and so far, the biggest challenge I went through was my first SYF in 2021. I tried my best during training and practices, and my fellow dance mates were the motivation for me to pull through. At first, I kept feeling demoralized whenever I could not get my moves right and often thought about giving up. However, my fellow dance mates who have been with me since Secondary 1, and my CCA teachers and instructors continued to encourage me through all the tough

times and motivated me to overcome the challenges. I am proud to say that the club has made progress throughout the years. With hard work and perseverance, I believe we can achieve even greater successes together in the future.

Tara Irynna (3R4)

Joining the Dance CCA has been the best decision I have ever made. It has allowed me to experience many new adventures along with my fellow dance mates as well as created the most memorable memories in my secondary school life. Through these 4 years in Dance Club, I have learnt many lessons and it has helped me grow as a person.

Liz-Alva Ong (4R1)

I have always found my time in the Dance Club an exciting experience. Although being one of the only few boys in the CCA felt odd, I always felt welcome and included. Throughout the years, I learned to be more confident and always do new things outside my comfort zone. Our then instructor, Mr Khye and the current instructor Mr. Trav, always push us to go full out with our strength in order for us to improve and give our best performance.

The past 4 years of my dance journey were indeed filled with ups and downs. There were times during practice, when I made multiple mistakes and wanted to give up, but I am glad that the dance leaders and fellow dance mates always had my back. Therefore, I want to thank them for believing in me as a Dance Captain and for the laugh and tears we went through together. Not forgetting our teachers who always give endless support, guidance and belief in our passion and seeing the potential in all of us. Lastly, to our dance instructors, Mr. Khye and Mr. Trav, it has been an honour to train under your guidance and supervision. Thank you for teaching us from the start to the end. I am proud of my achievements thus far and I truly believe that dancing is the best art form to express oneself.

We started the year with the CCA Trials and recruited another bumper crop of nineteen Secondary Ones. This brought our lower secondary enrolment to a never before attained total of thirty nine!

We staggered our sessions for the different levels due to Covid-19 restrictions. The Secondary Twos and Threes trained together in Term 1 while the Secondary Ones trained together in Term 2. Ms Rebecca, our trainer, ensured everyone had an enjoyable and enriching time while equipping our members with basic drama skills.

Although we are not a uniform group, we started all sessions with physical training. After all, actors need stamina to perform to the best of their ability! After that, we proceeded with vocal warm-ups. We played games but not only for enjoyment. These games trained our spatial awareness, sense of timing, sense of co-operation and calmed us down. The latter was especially handy with our boys who have endless energy and never seem to tire.

In Semester 1, we honed our acting skills by acting out popular fairy tales like Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldlilocks and the Three Little Pigs. Everyone not only enjoyed themselves but realised the little things that made a production a cut above the rest.

In Semester 2, the focus was on script writing with the emphasis on mental health. This gave us the opportunity to explore this issue in depth and we learned more about one another through these insightful discussions. We also put up a skit for Teacher’s Day. Those involved revelled in the opportunity to perform on stage before a live audience after 2 years of Covid-19 restrictions.

We look forward to 2023 and the resumption of pre-Covid-19 activities! This will give everyone an opportunity to play their part!

Reflections

My time in English Drama has taught me many new skills and has given me new experiences. I was able to build up my confidence in English Drama and will hold memories made there close to heart. Covid-19 was an unexpected addition to our lives and we had to miss out on certain events. However, it has also brought out a certain creativity in us, having us perform even with safe distancing measures. I will always be grateful for my wonderful experience and for what I have been able to learn from English Drama.

Being in English Drama has allowed me to expound on my values such as cooperation, amongst other values woven into the activities done there. The exuberant ambience always cheers me up after a long and arduous day at school along with the friendly people, who will not hesitate to strike up a conversation with you. With multiple opportunities to step out of my comfort zone and with unique activities incorporated into our sessions, drama leaves me feeling refreshed.

The best part of my secondary school journey was my cca. I made the best decision by joining the English Drama. Although we spent about two years of CCA virtually due to covid, the experience was no less enriching. Eventually, when we got the chance to physically carry out our CCA activities, I got the opportunity to meet my juniors and trainer. As I entered Secondary Three, I was given the opportunity to become the Vice President of the club. Initially, I was nervous about meeting the expectations of my teachers and peers. However with the immense support from my teachers, trainer and friends, I was able to carry out my duties successfully. I will always be grateful to my teachers and trainer, Ms Rebecca.

Ever since I joined English Drama 3 years ago, I have always enjoyed my time here. There are many interesting activities I participated in over the years, such as a lesson on script writing, acting, and even some competitions such as the radio drama competition last year. The CCA is an excellent way to destress after a stressful day.

English Drama has been always been my CCA since primary school but Secondary School is different. It is more of a break from studying and it is really enjoyable. It brings me out of my comfort zone when I talk in front of my fellow CCA mates. We have not performed in front of an audience due to Covid but slowly everything has been opening up. Some of the members had the chance to perform for Teacher’s Day. Many students found it entertaining and funny. Students and teachers enjoyed the performance. I really look forward to CCA sessions since we have warm-ups which make us energised and we even sometimes get the chance to play games. Drama activities make sure we are disciplined and work together as one. We have written scripts and have performed ‘on the spot’ dramas which is really interesting as many students’ ideas are creative and different. We can learn many new things from each other and have fun together.

The Tamil Drama students were given many opportunities in various domains to learn about different skills and inculcate culture through various activities. Through ‘Naanum Our Padaipali’ workshop, students were taught skills such as short story writing and acting. Weekly sessions conducted allowed students to understand and display their understanding through creative presentations. A few examples would be students researching different aspects of Tamil Culture and presenting it to their CCA mates. For example, traditional food and games.

Reflections

I am excited to play the role of a leader in Drama Tamil. The challenges faced throughout the year have taught me many valuable lessons and helped me gain values like resilience and confidence. I look forward to creating such experiences for my juniors!

Balamurugan Vicknesh (3R2) Chairperson

Drama Tamil has given me the chance to expose myself to various aspects of the Tamil culture through creating presentations and games. These activites have also fostered a deeper bond between my CCA mates and me. This has made Drama Tamil an enjoyable place to be in.

Jasrah D/O Abdul Rahim (3R3) Vice-Chairperson

As a Dram Tamil leader, I have learnt a lot. Participating in competitions like Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) has built confidence in me and has also made me understand the importance of teamwork. I also learnt various skills such as kolam drawing, dancing, and public speaking. It has been a great joy to lead my CCA members when they are in doubt. This has developed a greater understanding and bonding with my CCA members. It has been a great experience being a part of Tamil Drama.

With much anticipation, we embraced 2022. Our guides bonded and participated fully after emerging gingerly post pandemic.

Ms Yueh Ru came up with a refreshing idea to keep everyone in the loop by setting up a Padlet wherein all activities, plans and courses are updated constantly. This added value and streamlined the guiding experience for all concerned.

Our regular meetings saw us conducting drills, sharing guiding knowledge, delving in arts and crafts as well as working on badge work. Bendemeer guides also bonded over knot tying, gadget making and patrol time

Bendemeer Guides went for their first outdoor day course at Camp Christine after a 2-year hiatus by participating in the Baden Powell ECO Challenge. The guides had an exhilarating time enjoying the gifts of nature while working out the best strategies to overcome some obstacle courses on land as well as in the water. Each lent a helping hand to the other spontaneously.

We resumed our Girl Guides Cookies Sale, also after 2 years and Guides were challenged to sell at least 5 tins per girl. Some exceeded their quota exponentially and all girls were duly rewarded with a cookie badge.

We are very proud of 3 of our Guides, Ruiyi (2R3), Zafira (2R7) and Daphne Liau (4R5) who clinched the 2nd prize of $200 vouchers in the Smoke Free Ambassador Programme organised by the Singapore Cancer Society and Girl Guides Singapore.

We are thankful for all guides who have demonstrated much commitment to guiding and trust that the good vibe will continue into the new year and beyond.

Reflections

Being in Girl Guides has most definitely helped me to build up my leadership skills among others. This is undeniable as we are always given many chances to lead is also because students are the ones leading our CCA mates throughout the whole session. Being a leader has also pushed me out of my comfort zone. I never knew I was able to lead with great problem-solving skills and being a Girl Guide has shown me one never knows what one is capable of until one tries. That is what I like about being in the Girl Guides @ Bendemeer. Being in Girl Guides brings out the best out in me!

My experience as a Girl Guide leader has been manageable. Being a leader in this uniform group is such an important role because I am a role model to my fellow guides. My juniors look up to me so being a respectful, caring, and disciplined leader is important. I feel that we as leaders need to have an impact on our juniors as they are the leaders of the future.

I have been in Girl Guides for the past two years and joining this CCA was really one of the best decisions I’ve made. Girl Guides is a place I can openly express and learn more about myself. Being in Guides has instilled many good values in myself and life skills that I will carry with me throughout my life. In Guides we aren’t only friends but sisters. As a Guide, I have discovered many interests of mine. Our company is not just a group of girls but a second family to me. We have many fun activities such as camps and outdoor cooking. Being a Guide has provided me with many opportunities to learn new things. In Girl Guides we not only engage in Singapore based activities but in international ones too. I’m looking forward to learning and experiencing new things as part of Girl Guides.

Nur Humaira binte Gudubadsha Malik John (2R1)

Throughout my two years as a Girl Guide, the experiences I have gained have really been memorable. We have participated in many different activities and been through numerous challenges together. Those experiences have really helped us to learn more about the guiding spirit. Recently, the guides participated in the BPA Eco challenge at Camp Christine. To be honest, I was really scared to do it but with other guides cheering me on, it was really fun and motivated me to face all the obstacles head on. Completing the challenge in the water was especially difficult. However, the constant encouragement from the other guides and the camaraderie among us pushed me to complete another challenge yet again. Being a Girl Guide has brought a positive change in my life. The experiences I have gained have inculcated several values in me such as resilience, self-confidence and working as a team. Most importantly, I was able to step out of my comfort zone. Without the other guides, I don’t think that I would be able to continue my journey with Girl Guides.

I joined Girl Guides last year as a Secondary 2 international student. Thanks to my seniors and fellow Guides, I have adapted to this new environment very quickly. Moreover, I have gained insights into the meaning of leadership and have fulfilled my wish of becoming a more sociable and friendly person. Although we still have much room for improvement, with the help of our passionate fellow Guides and our patient Guiders, I have full faith that we can shape a better Girl Guides Company in the future together.

2022 is another fruitful year for Bendemeer NCC (Land) unit. We obtained Distinction for our annual Unit Recognition in 2021. This is testament to the hard work and commitment put in by our teacher officers, cadet officers, specialists and cadets.

With the easing of restrictions in 2022, our NCC cadets were able to take part in a wide range of activities which challenges them both mentally and physically. Earlier in the year, our cadets managed to carry out air rifle shoot at an indoor range. They also

had the opportunity to view the armoured vehicles and weaponry of the Singapore Armed Forces when they attended the Army Open House. In July, we did a unit hike from Windsor Nature Park to Bukit Timah. The experience instilled values of perseverance and resilience in our cadets and gave them a sense of accomplishment when they reached the end point. Furthermore, our Freestyle Drills team gave an impressive performance at the Annual Freestyle Drills Competition and school Speech Day. For Unit Cohesion Day, the cadets did their part for the environment by cleaning up the beach at East Coast Park. The cadets then cycled around East Coast Park and bonded with their teacher officers and fellow cadets.

With all the good effort put in by the teacher officers and cadets, we look forward to an even more eventful year in 2023.

Reflections

As the leader of NCC, I learnt how to be responsible in my CCA. NCC is generally a fun CCA as we get to bond with our friends and create a stronger bond. NCC also has many outdoor activities, making it an exciting CCA.

MSG MOHAMED AZHAR (3R1)

I was pressured by my parents to choose NCC as my first option. For the first few weeks of training, I regretted coming to NCC. However, I told myself that this training may benefit myself. I slowly started to enjoy the NCC trainings that I had with my friends.

SSG MOHAMED IRFAN FIQRI (3R4)

NCC has taught me several values that have helped me improve myself through meaningful field trips and activities such as the beach cleaning at East Coast Park.

CPL Bobby Leonard Gari (2R5)

I really enjoyed the air rifle activity at SAFRA as it was fun to compete in accuracy with my NCC mates. It was an unforgettable experience.

CPL MAANAV PARAVATHAM (2R3)

NCC is a fun and chill CCA and not too much stress. Wearing the uniform was challenging but after all, it looks very cool.

2022 was a challenging, yet rewarding year for us. As COVID restrictions were eased, many of our activities resumed and our cadet leaders worked hard to make these activities come true.

The Secondary 3 cadets took part in the inaugural Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) competition organized by NPCC Headquarters. Although the competition took place over ZOOM, the cadets still had fun solving crime and piecing the clues together.

The cadet leaders rised up to the challenge of organizing a day camp for the incoming Secondary 1 cadets, despite the fact that they did not have the experience of being in a camp. The cadets bonded through

games, cooked their lunch cooked over a portable stove and raced from school to National Stadium. The cadets, both the participants and organisers, ended the camp with a greater sense of unity and strength knowing that they can, with the help of each other, overcome challenges.

Cadets also had the chance to get involved with the community outside school. Sec 1 cadets resumed their visit to the Rochor Neighbourhood Police Post. Sec 2 and 3 cadets volunteered their services at Kolam Ayer Community Club, as road marshal for Racial Harmony Day celebrations and held a parade for National Day celebrations.

To end off the year, the cadet leaders organized an outing to Marina Barrage. All the cadets intermingled with each other regardless of their class or level, forging stronger camaraderie which would be bring us to greater heights in the future.

Reflections

I joined NPCC since Sec 1 and I have had a very fun experience in the CCA. Being in NPCC taught me values such as perseverance, resilience, respect, integrity, responsibility, team work, care and trust. As a cadet leader, we have a lot more responsibilities such as planning for weekly training and Sec 1 camp, all the while ensuring that our own drills and skills are up to standard.

CPL (NPCC) Mohamed Amzath Mohamed Saleem (3R6)

As a cadet leader, one of the main challenges I encountered was the lack of communication within my squad. So I learned to communicate with my squadmates whenever I needed help. I also learned to take responsibility when leading a team and to keep a lookout for each other.

SGT (NPCC) Soh Xiu Yun (3R5)

NPCC has instilled many core values in me and developed me into a better person. Though training can be arduous at times, I still find NPCC enjoyable because of the fond memories I hold with my squadmates thus far.

This year, our Secondary 2 to 3 cadets worked very hard for the First Aid Championships. The seniors guided the juniors to perfect their bandaging skills as well as how to carry out CPR in an emergency. Their hard work paid off as our junior and senior teams attained Silver and Bronze respectively. Cadets took part in the Disaster Risk Reduction Competition where they were put to the test to think on their feet and plan an evacuation route for casualties trapped in a disaster. Our cadets also had fun on their learning journey to the Asian Civilisation Museum, where the seniors planned an amazing race for them. Cadets also enjoyed bonding over the outdoor cooking, as the seniors taught their juniors how to get the fire started. This year, cadets enjoyed all the activities and competitions as Covid restrictions eased up.

Reflections

This year I experienced my very first outdoor cooking. It was certainly an eyeopening experience. I was able to bond and interact with all my batch mates and juniors. Through this experience, I was able to learn about the importance of lending a helping hand. My batch mates were able to help me during the outdoor cooking, for example, helping me light up the fire. I also learnt to be patient as I had to wait for the food to be ready and for the fire to be lit.

Boo See Ching Sarah (4R2)

I enjoyed my CCA this year as I got to teach for the first time. I find teaching people really fun and enjoyable as it also helps me learn more about what I’m teaching them. I learnt about the different kinds of bandaging such as forearm bandaging and palm bandaging.

This year, Red Cross has taught me patience. After being appointed President this year, I had to work closely with my teachers, batchmates and juniors. Sometimes, we don’t agree on certain things and it leads to conflict. As a leader, I’ve learnt to be more patient, talk things out and improve on my communication skills as well as how to resolve conflicts amicably.

I like being in Red Cross as it allows me to learn basic necessities on how to save lives through basic first aid. It also helps me to improve and practise teamwork as most of time. I have to work and cooperate with other people during hands on activities. Next , my teachers in Red Cross also planned activities for us to interact with our juniors and seniors like cooking or going to a museum. Red Cross also allows me to overcome my fear by letting me teach my juniors while also interacting with them. Before teaching , I have to prepare lesson slides and through that I am able to better understand the content. I can also use what I learnt in Red Cross during class time if I ever need to present something to my class. I also learn how to treat injuries and wounds on me or other people and what to do during emergency scenarios when someone is injured.

This year I was able to work together with my batch mates during competitions such as the disaster management competition. I was able to learn the importance of teamwork and unity. I learnt to brainstorm ideas and make puzzles related to disaster management. After many tries I was able to make a good puzzle game with recycled materials.

My CCA is fun as I get to learn new things like first aid that can benefit me if I were to get injured and I know how to help myself or if my classmates were to get injured. I could also help casualties. I even got to learn about the history of Red Cross like when was Red Cross created or when the first blood bank started. My CCA teachers Miss Ling, Mr Jan and Ms Vimala set up activities for us like cooking outdoors, museums and games to play with our juniors which helped me a lot. I learnt things I have never learnt before and got to do things with my friends as a group. We taught our juniors like how our seniors used to teach us and we got to interact with the juniors and make happy memories together.

This year went by quickly and was a very fast but fulfilling year. In this CCA, Red Cross Youth, I have learned about the theories of saving people’s lives and how to become a leader. Besides that, we have started to become leaders of this CCA as we are Sec 3. We are leading our junior cadets, exploring new things and solving new problems at the same time. Personally, I joined the First Aid competition in Term 2 of this year. When I prepared for the competition, I was trained to learn different kinds of bandages, the use of AED and performing CPR. This year, our CCA also had a lot of activities like cooking outdoors and visiting the museum to enrich our knowledge. Overall, in this year’s CCA life, I learned a lot of things and enjoyed this CCA very much.

Objectives:

To uphold the five school values when participating in CCA activities.

Integrity - Being true, fair and honest to yourselves and others in your words and actions.

Care - By looking after yourselves, others and your surroundings.

Respect - Being kind in words, manners and actions to the teachers, coaches, peers, opponents, umpires and the audience.

Responsibility - Being accountable for your words and actions as well as taking care of your personal health and safety.

Resilience - Not to give up easily and always giving your personal best.

The Bendemeer Secondary Sepak Takraw as a CCA provides boys with a keen interest in the sport a platform to not only enhance their playing skills but also to have a cocurricular activity that is both interesting and challenging. Over the years, the boys are expected to demonstrate camaraderie, team work and sportsmanship, especially when representing the school at competitive levels. As they experience sports at a competitive level, the school hopes to prepare them psychologically for

future sporting endeavours as they move on to higher educational institutions.

The CCA comprises of Secondary 1 to Secondary 4 students who are enthusiastic and motivated to learn the skills for the sport. The students play the game at a recreational and competitive level. They are trained, guided and supervised by 3 dedicated teachers and a coach.

The Bendemeer Sepak Takraw kickstarted the year by recruiting new members from Secondary-One through skill testing sessions during the Orientation Week. After several sessions of intensive trainings, we had our friendly matches between the ‘B’ and ‘C’ division boys to assess our players’ readiness and competiveness. These matches and trainings provide us with a great opportunity to build good and strong friendship with others. It also gives the new members a good platform for team bonding.

Trainings are conducted two times a week. They are held on Mondays and Wednesdays. During training, the team not only focuses on the athletic aspects critical to the sport but also on character bulding and leadership. School values such as resilience, respect and integrity are instilled in every player throughout the training sessions. Very often, the boys looked forward to these trainings and turned up even earlier before training started. Trainings may be exhausting and gruelling but the boys enjoyed themselves and persevered throughout the training sessions.

The teachers and coach have built a very strong rapport with these boys and often motivated and encouraged them not only in terms of having good sportsmanship but also on character-building and studies.

Reflections

This year is unforgettable for me as it is my first time taking part in a competition and getting to know more about Sepak Takraw. I learnt a lot and continue to improve my skills in Sepak Takraw. I am not shy to seek help from my team mates to be a better player.

Mohamed Zulazim Bin Zulkifli (3R8)

I train hard in Sepak Takraw and have improved in basic juggling skills and communication skills too. Without both of them, we will not be able to play well during competitions. My advice to anybody reading this, never give up or lose hope. Just enjoy your CCA and even if you lose, train harder next time.

Muhammad Firdaus Bin Repin (2R6)

The training for Sepak Takraw this year was difficult and tiring but it was also rewarding as we were able to hone our basic skills. Even though occasionally I was a reserve player during the national school games competitions, I can see that my team mates use the skills they have learnt from training. These have resulted in some wins for our team.

Muhammad Riyan Rifqi Bin Rahman (2R5)

This is my first time playing Sepak Takraw as a CCA. It was a very great experience as I have learnt a lot from my coach and team mates. Although the training was tiring, it was also fun. We played matches against our own team mates. In this way, we practiced how to upgrade our skills and be ready for the coming competitions.

With relaxed safety measures, training has returned to normalcy. We started the year with the recruitment of seventeen Secondary One students through a video that was prepared by our members. For the video, some students put up an impressive performance of their Poomsae routines and demonstrated their high kicks and punches.

Members were excited when the National School Games and the Kallang Community Club Taekwondo Championship resumed albeit with some Safe Management Measures. Through participation in these competitions, our members have gained the valuable lessons of discipline, sportsmanship and teamwork, which have developed them holistically. Our members trained hard to perfect their routines, especially in synchronising with team members for the team events. We managed to obtain one Silver and three Bronze medals for the National Schools Games and we won numerous medals for the Kallang Community Club Taekwondo Championship as well as emerging as the Overall Champion for the competition.

We are extremely proud of our members as they have been adapting to the disruptions for the last two years and their continued enthusiasm in training and the desire to improve their skills in Taekwondo.

Reflections

Looking back, I’ve progressed a lot from that timid ‘White Belter’ way back in Secondary one to be the CCA captain today. One of the best things about the Taekwondo club is that you’re never alone. You will always have someone there to encourage you, to push you to perform to the very best of your ability. Seeing the other members train is also an inspiration to me to train harder. In addition, it motivates me to become a better leader to guide my fellow members throughout the journey.

In my four years of Taekwondo training, it has provided me with sporting and selfdefence abilities and has given me an edge in daily life, with its merits as a martial art sport of self-discipline, perseverance, and resilience. All in all, my experience in Taekwondo has been one of the most enjoyable experiences of my secondary school life. I’m proud to say that I’m part of the Taekwondo family!

Kok Zi Ying (3R1) Captain

Taekwondo is a very dynamic CCA and many of us trained very hard to be disciplined. This year, we managed to participate in the Kallang Community Club Championship, and we won the overall

championship award. It was indeed a very good achievement and a reward for all the hard work we have put in.

I was chosen to be the Vice-Captain in Taekwondo, assisting my coach to teach some of the junior members. This responsibility has made me to be more patient and well mannered. Moreover, it has helped boost my confidence in interacting with people and has made me to be more enthusiastic in learning Taekwondo.

Taekwondo is a sport that is not available in many schools and that is why I am in this CCA. In Taekwondo, not only am I taught self-defence skills but also values and teamwork skills. During competitions, we not only have individual events but also team events. We need determination and resilience to learn and co-ordinate well the Poomsae patterns. Moreover, when we are training, it can be tiring at times but our seniors will motivate us to persevere and give our best when it comes to competitions. All in all, I think Taekwondo is a great experience and learning opportunity for everyone even though it may be tough at times.

Despite not being able to adequately train due to the SMM measures, our tchoukballers gave their best and did the school proud at the National Inter-School Tchoukball Division Championships. The B Division girls played through multiple injuries to secure third placing while the two boys’ teams secured the third and fourth placing in their respective categories. The C Division saw our boys clinch the third spot while the girls gave a valiant effort but failed to qualify for the quarterfinals.

On the international front, Dylan, Rayvien and Ryan did us proud by representing the school at the Asia-Pacific Tchoukball Championships and clinching second place in the M15 Boys category while Jeona won Gold in the M18 Girls category.

Bendemeer’s tchoukball team is looking forward to an even better showing next year.

Reflections

Before joining Tchoukball, I was quiet and shy, but after interacting with my teammates for a year, I am more confident.

Shanice (2R4)

Being the Captain of the C Division boys team, I have learnt to lead the team through training sessions, ensuring that we give our best. I also cherish the opportunity to be a role model for the rest to follow.

Rayvien Lim (2R6)

During the first few training sessions, I was quite playful. However, over the course of the year, Tchoukball has taught me to become more focused and disciplined, and I gladly welcomed the role of Captain of the C Division girls team.

2022 has seen the resumption of many activities, which has provided our Student Councilors with many valuable opportunities to plan and carry out events for the school. This included their Learning for Life Project (LLP) where they carried out a Green Movement which

raised awareness among students to reduce plastic waste, carried out a plastics recycling competition and even worked with an external organization to recycle the plastic waste that was collected. They also planned events such as Teacher’s Day and Racial Harmony Day, where they organized and execute activities for the entire school. They participated in leadership workshops where they were stretched to their limits, both mentally and physically. They also learnt important leadership practices such as Inspiring Others, and how to apply them in their capacity as student leaders. As measures further ease, the Student Council looks forward to planning more of such events for the school!

Thoughts & Reflections

Students' Reflections

In the past school year, I have met with many challenges and difficulties. However, I have also met many people that I have forged strong bonds with such as my friends. Thanks to them and the supportive teachers here at Bendemeer, I have learnt to overcome my challenges and am looking forward to seeing them again next year.

Jeniece (1C1)

The past one year in Bendemeer was so amazing. Teachers in Bendemeer are very attentive to every student’s welfare and studies. They are like our pillar of strength when we are feeling down. Friends in Bendemeer are also very caring and helpful and will go through all ups and downs with me.

Hi Ru (1C1)

I think Sec 1 is like Primary 1 where you have a brand new experience, you got to have more fun lessons, long but fun CCAs and most importantly new friends to help me to adapt to this new environment. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and I hope that my next year would be as entertaining and fun like this year.

I-Ko (1C1)

My learning experience in school is that i really like how bendeemer creats engaging activities, such as the farm visit and the Appreciation Day,which helps us appreciate what people whom we barely knew before, and the school also caters to students that are weak in some subjects and it helps me learn more about the world around me thanks to LLP and CCE lessons and my friends and classmates are willing to help me through any difficulties, so overall im satisfied with my learning experience in school.

Yong Xin (1C2)

My learning experience in the school has been fun and enjoyable. The ALP was fun, we get to create games learn coding. LLP was fun too we got to plant roselles and decorate the classroom for appreciation day. The lessons are enjoyable especially science lessons or D&T, FCE, art, pe, etc when we get to leave the classroom and explore different ways of learning.

Si Xuan (1C2)

Throughout the year, I have learnt many things. When I first met my teachers, my first impressions of them were that they would be strict, but once I got to know them, they were really nice. Although I may not be fond of all the teachers I have met, a majority of them have been really nice, and it is easy to talk to them. The schools environment is also calming, since the teachers do not put too much pressure on us in terms of our studies.

Jun Ming (1C2)

I had an enjoyable experience when I was in class 1C3 during the year 2022. One of the funnest experiences was when we did the planting activities. I had a lot of fun while doing it as I have never planted before. I thought I was going to not enjoy as planting seems boring but after trying i had fun. I hope that we can cherish the moment we had together.

What I enjoyed most about this school so far is my classmates. My classmates are mostly pleasant and easy to get along with and I even found many of them more mature and friendly compared to the class I was in the class year.

I enjoyed the trip to Little India as i learnt more about the Indian culture during the trip. I also enjoyed eating the food there as it was delicious and was very memorable. I liked the part when we could go in the museum as I liked looking at the different artifacts and watching the story of Little India. I found it interesting and liked watching it. I really enjoyed going for the trip to Little India and hope to go somewhere else in the future.

When I first came to this secondary school, I was very scared because there were students who were older than me and I couldn’t find any students who were from my primary school. I was afraid I could not make friends. But it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I have made many friends and they were amazing. They have helped me whenever I needed help and comforted me whenever I was down. However, the rules have been very strict but the teachers were really kind and they would help us whenever they could. We also have learning journeys which have helped us learn more about places and bond with friends.

This whole year was amazing. There was more fun than when I was in the primary school. Life in secondary one was memorable because there were more subjects, bigger environment, and more friends. Other than that, the year was amazing because we were given the Chromebook and we were able to extend our learning beyond the textbooks and that makes the lessons interesting. So, the whole of this year was nice.

To be frank, Bendemeer was not really my desired school of choice, therefore I was not expecting much when I first entered the

school. Throughout this year in this school, I have made the right group of friends along the way and have learnt different skills. Despite my grades that was not up to expectation, it was really an interesting year. Ultimately, this year has taught me better ways of dealing with things.

-

My experience in Secondary One was different than I had expected. The class I was in was something I had never experienced before. The class was very accepting, making me feel more comfortable and have a sense of belonging. In the end, I was able to make friends who help and support one another. Indeed, my time in Secondary One was fun and memorable which I would always cherish.

It was with great apprehension I started my initial days here in Bendemeer Secondary School as it was completely a new environment for me. But I was well received here by good friends and supportive teachers, who helped me to achieve my aspirations. It was a year filled with good learning and enjoyment.

My experiences in Bendemeer Sec have been extremely wonderful. I made a lot of new friends and the teachers are very friendly and helpful. For the year, I have learnt a lot of things through programmes such as LLP and BEE. I have also learnt the importance of teamwork and our school values — Integrity, Care, Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Harmony. I was involved in amazing class activities which I personally did not experience in the primary school, such as ALP. I learnt coding and created a game for people with dementia! The overall experience in the school this year had been unique and I hope there will be more for me to explore in the years to come.

My first year in Bendemeer is great and fantastic as the teachers are helpful and supportive. The students are well-behave and the friends I made are kind and caring. I took part in the BEE programme and experienced those very fun activities such as balloon sculpting, circus act, skateboarding and fencing. Not only I was given opportunity to perform on stage, I was able to learn some basic skills and tricks of skateboarding. Visiting vegetable farm and preparation for LLP Appreciation Day were other highlights of the year. I feel very fortunate to be in this school.

88

Some things I enjoyed in sec 2 were the activities planned despite having the current pandemic limiting the various choices. I enjoyed the majority of the experiences within this year like the various celebrations planned for the various events. Some things I didn’t quite like was how long CCA was after school but I guess I have to get used to it. Exam stress due to the sheer amounts of practice papers given were overwhelming, but besides that, everything has enjoyable.

This year, there were more opportunities for interactions between the Bendemeer community and it was very memorable. I especially enjoyed Racial Harmony day planned by the student councillors. A struggle I face schooling in Bendemeer is transportation. Bendemeer is an hour away from home. I have to wake up and leave home earlier than my friends and my siblings. However, I think that the journey is meaningful as it trains me to be a disciplined and punctual person.

As I entered Bendemeer on the year of 2021, I was hoping to explore many different things. I met new people. It took me a while to adapt to a new environment but whenever I faced an issue or a challenge my teachers and friends were always there to support me. I had many opportunities to express my talents and learn new things. As the school song suggest “Bendemeer, always in our hearts” in Bendemeer we share a very positive relationship with another. In this journey, I am excited to see what awaits me.

2022 was a much better year than 2021 as the safety measures were reduced and we could have more outdoor activities and excursions. I also met a lot of great and fun people this year. 2022 has been the best year of my secondary school life so far.

Throughout the span of the last year, I honestly think that my learning experience was extremely enjoyable and it was all thanks to my classmates and teachers for setting up the right mental environment to get me motivated to study. The classroom was consistently kept clean and neat which did help myself along with others to be able to concentrate on the various lessons being taught throughout the days. Sometimes teachers would even change up the lessons and make them fun by allowing us to use our Personal Learning Devices and do work online instead of having to write on physical paper. Overall, my second year spent in Bendemeer was more amazing than the previous year and I hope that it will be even better in 2023!

When I first stepped into 1C4, I was anxious and afraid of meeting new teachers and students whom I had never met before. But as time passed, I warmed up and with the support of teachers and friends. I even got the chance to be a vice-chairperson in Secondary 2. I am grateful to be in such a kind and supportive class.

I have enjoyed my two years in Bendemeer so far as I was lucky enough to be in a class full of warmth. My form teachers are really kind and supportive. My classmates are also nice and we were all able to work together. My learning experience in Bendemeer has been great as the teachers are approachable and they provide us with all the help we need. They are willing to stay back with us after school to clear our doubts and let us text them when we need help.

This year, my school experience was lovely as almost every lesson I experienced was intriguing and enjoyable. Albeit these lessons could be pretty dull, the teachers would still try their best to educate us in a more interesting way to make us enjoy these lessons more.

The long year was not as laid back as it seemed due to it being the streaming year. However, with the help of supportive teachers and peers, they made 2022 pass by with ease in a blink of an eye without a fret.

My overall school experience in Bendemeer Secondary School for this year was very good. As I have just joined this school I faced quite a number of problems. But the good thing is that I have my teachers to help me out most of the time and other peers that welcome me too. I am glad to join Bendemeer Secondary school and have all the teachers and peers who have accompanied me throughout this year.

I enjoyed the interclass badminton competition. It was a good opportunity for me to make new friends and have fun, even though I did not win anything. I appreciate the effort that the PE department put in for us. I hope that there are more interclass competitions to come and I’m looking forward to participating in these events.

Han Yu (Vice Chairperson) (2R6)

A memorable event that happened this year would have to be Racial Harmony Day. To me it was very fun to dress up in different ethnic clothing and see your friends in their costumes.

And I think many people enjoyed Racial Harmony Day because we could finally have a chance to change in attire other than wearing our own school uniform or cca attire. At the photo booth set up at the foyer on that day, my friends and I preserved the memory in the form of a photo.

Khan Sabeil Alli (Chairperson) (2R6)

My two years in Bendemeer have been nothing but the best. Along with learning so many new skills like making new friends. I would like to specially thank my subject teachers for always guiding me.

Pari Sharma (2R7)

I was very shy when I just joined the school and did not talk to anyone. I have made a lot of friends since then. They have made my CCA and school life a lot more fun.

One and a half years of being a Vicechairperson has been a great experience for me as my class is accommodating and respectful. I have also gained much from the student leaders’ trainings which taught me valuable skills.

Danny Tan Wei Liang (2R7)

My time in secondary school was not that bad. I made friends like Tanish and Herald. I get to study new subjects like Food and Nutrition (F&N)and Design and Technology (D&T). DnT was a bit hard when I drilled out some parts to design it. F&N was a bit fun and easy because I get to cook and learn about vitamins.

Clifton

At first, I was afraid to go to school since Bendemeer Secondary is quite far from my primary school. I had a hard time making friends with my classmates because I am not a very sociable person. I even thought about transferring to another school because of this predicament. However, the more I progressed through the last 2 years, I’ve found that now I am more comfortable in school as I am surrounded by my close friends, contrary to my first few weeks in this school. Next year, I hope to make more friends and have fun in school!

Japheth

My time when I was in lower secondary was relatively easy but I do sometimes make a lot of mistakes as I tend to rush through work at times. When I was Sec 1, I struggled with keeping up with classes and did not do very well for my first test. I used that as an opportunity to learn what I did wrong and learned from them. Then, due to me working harder I find that Sec 2 is actually very easy as I excelled in math and science which helped me achieve my goals for future purposes and benefits.

Students' Reflections

Something that made this year memorable was the end of year activities. I got to learn interesting things such as sand animation and how the maritime industry works. It definitely was an eye-opening experience for me.

Soo Sheng Jie (3R1)

Campaigning for SC President has probably been the highlight of the year for me as it is quite a rare opportunity to come by and I had lots of fun preparing for my speeches and mementos. The role of the Vice-President, although stressful, was quite enjoyable. I helped plan and host several school events such as Racial Harmony Day and Teacher’s Day. I had lots of fun hosting the events and I would say the hard work preparing for these events definitely paid off.

Ace Tan (3R1)

The time I spent in Bendemeer Secondary School will be a memorable experience for me. The teachers have transformed my life for the better. They are passionate, committed and would go the extra mile to help a student. I am grateful to my teachers and friends who helped me to excel in my three years of secondary school so far.

Sheenaz (3R2)

Bendemeer is the place where I learnt many new things. Through my three years of being in this school, I have made new friends, created new memories and experienced many new things. I am also grateful to all the teachers that have taught me well and pushed me to realise my true potential. I look forward to enjoying my final year with my class.

Qizhen (3R2)

I stepped into secondary three being terrified of the worst. I stepped into the class and met 2 Teachers that stood out to me which is Mrs Ho and Mrs Yap. Their dedication to teaching has always amazed me, It’s truly amazing in their lessons.

Chong Tong En (3R3)

I would suggest that this year will be remembered for a variety of reasons. due to covid, sec3s have not had the chance to participate in any learning excursions or other activities. however, we had a few activities, and i thought they were the greatest. formed new relationships and gained knowledge from various courses. created numerous amusing memories with all of my friends!

Jasrah D/O Abdul Rahim (3R3)

One of my most memorable experience for this year was orienteering. It was very fun as, me and my teammate had a really good time searching for the stamps as fast as we could. Competing with others made it more enjoyable as everyone who participated

wanted to be the winner. Hence, we were really competitive which caused me to jump into the mud by accident due to the thrill of competition.

Aditya (3R5)

One event that has made this year memorable was the learning journey trip to Bishan Park. This trip has helped my classmates and I have a closer bond together as it was our first time going out together as a class.

Jenneke (3R5)

Ms Wong is very kind and understanding. She would always care for each of his students even when they were failing. One time when I didn’t do homework, she would make me stay back and help me with the questions I couldn’t understand. Ms Wong was very patient with me even when I couldn’t answer certain basic questions. Ms Wong can break down complex questions and explain it very clearly. She also makes classes very entertaining and enjoyable. With Ms Wong as my teacher, I was able to improve my math and pass my exams.

Jun Ning (3R5)

“I believe that this year has been one of the better years because the covid situation has improved and we could return to normalcy. However, covid did affect my end of year exam when I ended up getting covid near the end of my last two papers. On the whole, I am glad that we were able to enjoy more school activities and programs. For instance, we were able to go to ITE to experience and learn about some of the courses offered.”

“I believe this year may be one of the better years for me. Previously I was not motivated to study but that all changed this year and now I am quite proud to say I score decently well. I was also nominated by my teacher and classmates to represent the class for the Model Bendemeerian Award. I think this year has been better due to the teachers who have helped motivate me as well as my friends who have guided me in my studies.”

“Attending school has been a blissful experience that has helped me expand my knowledge and provided a hand to help me push ahead into the future.

There are many things that I look back upon. I seek to improve to make myself a better person so that my peers can look up to me. I have been blessed by several amazing teachers who understood me and have helped me over the year(s). I am indeed very thankful and I do not know if I could ever repay such kindness given to me.

This school year has been fun but everything that has a start will always have an end to it. With the help of my peers and teachers, I feel that I have done quite well for the year and hope to do better next year.”

Kuick Jack (3R6)

This year has been very eventful as I started Secondary 3 with many doubts. The highlight of the year was when the Secondary 3 NA/NT classes went on a 3-day learning experience for our elective modules at ITE Central with the normal resumption of activities. The programme was most memorable for me as the class received new learning experiences and we had freedom to explore ITE Central at times. Concluding, this year went by fast, but I had a very enjoyable and fun time spent with my classmates.

At the start of this year, I did not have the confidence to interact with my peers in school. However, with the resumption of activities and daily attendance, I realised that it was not that scary to talk to people and I really enjoyed spending time with them! I am glad that I have made more friends this year and at the same time, I have built up the courage and strength to approach people.

2022 has been a tough year for me yet I endured it with resilience. The school value has seen me growing stronger as a person and making more friends in class. The school outings and soccer CCA have motivated me to attend school daily. Also, I would like to thank my form teachers, Ms Ruth Tang, Ms Achaiya & Mr Jelvin Lee, who have been supporting me throughout this year!

Our class this year was great! I could see some of our classmates coming to school regularly, changing to be a better version of themselves as they grow. We even seek out things to do and learn new things together as a class and share our thoughts and feelings to our classmates without feeling judged. We got to do fun activities together with our friends and teachers and create memories together.

Class 3R8 is a very dynamic and interesting class. In 3R8, we would come together after school and complete our notice board together as a class. Many of us also managed to create interesting games for everyone in class to try as part of our Science Weighted Assessment. We would take turns trying out each other’s newly created carnival games while exploring the concepts on Forces and Energy.

For the past months I could see that our class has been improving little by little, I could see that they are trying to learn and pass their subjects including the ones that usually do not pay attention in class. I could see that they are trying, their End of Year examinations may have not been the best, as well as their attendance for some. However, I could see them putting in the effort and trying. I feel like that’s what matters- from Each his Best!

Keith Tan Bo Lin (3R8)

It is quire a bittersweet feeling to be leaving this school. On one hand, I am glad I can move on and go further in my education path, on the other hand, I am quite saddened that I would be saying goodbye to my teachers, friends, and all the memorable places I’ve been in this school. I’ve had plenty of memorable experiences, all the way back when during Secondary 1 where my classmates from 1C1 helped build Micro Bit contraptions for our cleaners, to as recent as this year’s Milestone Walk where I got the opportunity to chat with my friends and share my binoculars with them. I will greatly cherish these moments abd appreciate how it shaped me to who I am today.

Loo Guo Hui (4R1)

Although I was looking forward to finishing o levels and finally getting to rest, after celebrating, it did feel strangely unfamiliar to not have to study anymore, no holiday homework, no revision for next year, just finally time for myself. I was so used to studying for 12-15 hours a day that it was weird to rest without guilt. It’s unfortunate that our batch didn’t get to go on many learning journeys but I’m happy we at least got to have the milestone walk. I’ll miss some of the teachers in this school that have gone above and beyond to support their students in their studies and personal life, and I hope to visit bendemeer again even after graduation.

Cassandra Choo (4R1)

Ever since I joined Bendemeer Secondary in July 2021, all the teachers were very helpful and keen to share their knowledge and constantly reminded me to be resilient and versatile. These valuable insights aided me to achieve a lot of my goals during my short one and a half years in the Singapore’s school system, and excel.

Ye Yint Tha Aung (4R2)

My 4 years of education in Bendemeer Secondary has vanished in a blink of an eye. When I joined this school, I thought that it is going to be exactly like my primary school, but it was totally opposite. I was able to be independent and Bendemeer bustling with delight and excitement. My eye-opening moment was when I was in Secondary 1, we participated in the Bubble Bump which was a new experience for me. My happiest moment of my life was my

participation in the Milestone Walk. Where I had to long heart to heart chat with my favourite teachers like Ms Shamini and Mr Dave on route to our destination.

Veenath Kumar (4R2)

The past 4 years have been nothing short of amazing. An especially memorable event was my last performance in modern dance CCA for Speech Day. I also had helpful teachers such as Mr Rafid and Mr Dave for D&T. They guided me through countless doubts which seemed insurmountable in my coursework for which I am truly grateful.

Pavitra d/o Ramesh (4R2)

These 4 years feel like 4 months, the Bendemeer Experience has been a positive one for me. Most of my time was spent in the classroom but no matter I was able to hang out with my friends longer. This happened to be what I enjoyed most in the 4 years.

Jaren Tham (4R2)

My time in Bendemeer has been a fun and valuable one. I got to learn a lot of life lessons and values like resilience, respect etc that will surely benefit me in the future. Even though I have had unpleasant times in Bendemeer, I try to take the lessons they teach me and cherish the good memories. COVID struck Singapore in 2020, and that hindered my joyful secondary school life experience I was supposed to enjoy. Nevertheless, my teachers ensured that my time in class was joyous as well as meaningful which helped to fill the void of not being able to go on learning journeys. With a lot of fond memories, I complete my four years in Bendemeer with many lessons and that’s all thanks to my peers and teachers who were there to always support me!

Jyoshna Krishnan (4R3)

Bendemeer is a bad school. That’s what many students thought when we came to Bendemeer, the school toilets look disgusting and the entire school looks old. However, after being in this school for 4 years I realised that Bendemeer was great! Even though it has its flaws, the kind and caring staffs and teachers that have helped us get through our secondary school life. The cover of this old book may look boring but the contents are jewels. Thank you for helping us through O-levels!

Four years in this school has been a bliss and one that I will truly treasure . The caring and understanding principals and teachers have definitely played a great role in my education journey. They are always ready to give a listening ear and provide extra help with my studies if needed. They made my experience in this school a memorable one and I am forever grateful for all of them as they also played a great part in my personal development.

Sachithananthan Akshadha (4R4)

My journey in Bendemeer has to be one of the most memorable experiences that I have had. I’m grateful to my teachers who have guided me through these four years, helping me to become who I am today. They are helpful, kind, caring and patient to answer all the questions I had. They have also taught me valuable lessons that I will not forget. Thanks to them, I achieved good academic results and won the Model Bendemeerian Award.

Huang Po Yang (4R5)

My time in Bendemeer has been a great adventure and a rollercoaster of emotions. It developed me into a well-rounded individual. No words can describe how grateful I am to my supportive teachers and friends who stayed with me throughout these four years. It has been fun. Thank you Bendemeer!

Daphne Liau Ching (4R5)

The four years in this school have been a thrilling adventure. I still remember vividly that I was very nervous and scared on my first day of school but with the help of my kind teachers, I overcame the fear and quickly adapted to this new environment. Two events really touched my heart: Sec 1 Orientation and Milestone Walk because they represent the start of a new chapter and the end of the chapter of this school respectively. The school has helped me to gain skills and values that will help me pursue my goals in the long run and excel. I want to thank my teachers who have taught me from Sec 1 to Sec 4 for their dedication to their work. I really admire their effort. All the memories that I have made in this school will not be forgotten.

Nur Maya Andria Binte Mohd Noor (4R5)

My time at Bendemeer secondary school has been memorable. From all the experience that the school has given me to the teachers and friends who have helped me during tough times, I have become a better person. It has helped me gain core values that I would need after leaving Bendemeer.

Nils Ivar Sagsagat Niklasson (4R5)

My most memorable day was the milestone walk this year. i got to walk with my whole cohort and got to interact more with my classmates and teachers. the milestone walk was very enjoyable as this will be my last activity in the school as a bendemeerian. i got the chance to take lots of pictures with my friends while we walk and we had lots of laughter on the way too. i also got the chance to talk to teachers more as i don’t have the chance to in school. overall , the milestone walk is a very fun and memorable activity and i would never forget it.

Chloe Leong (4R6)

“Shall we get a dino keychain for ourselves?” and the keychain remained on the bags of the four of us. We remained best friends for years to come. The dinos were also testimonials of our friendships. Four years.. of laughter, tears and joy. I remember fondly of the walks, bowling activities, museum visits, campfire, camping days with my friends. We will miss our teachers, friends and our beloved school.

Shannon Lim (4R6)

Over these past 4 years in secondary school i have made many memories. in secondary 1 all of us were students who had just finished their psle and had to adapt to the more intense and strict lifestyle of secondary school. I remember in secondary 1 mrs poon who was our form teacher was very strict on attire whenever she saw use with our polo tee tucked out she would make us write reflections or when we did not wear our tires throughout the entire day we had to write a reflection. she was also strict about bringing things to lessons if we forgot to bring our recorder to music lessons we would have to write a reflection. At the end of our first year in secondary 1 my friends and i had thought finally no more reflections but in secondary 2 mrs poon was our form teacher again and all the same rules had applied. during covid period we had hbl and we would have to wake up and reply to the class group chat by 730 am but there were always people who did not wake up and mrs poon had made them write a reflection and send it to her via WhatsApp. besides all these strict rules mrs poon was a great teacher always making us excited for music lessons and making jokes throughout her lessons and she would always let us hold class parties wherever there was an occasion in school and that made our class very united.

Tharunesh (4R6)

For the past four years in Bendemeer Secondary School, I have learnt and gained many memorable and useful knowledge and skills. I was able to nurture into a better person in terms of character. The school has contributed a big part to my life in preparing me for the future. However, unfortunately due to Covid-19 pandemic that hit us, we were unable to experience many events as a school, for example Secondary 3 Camp, Cross Country and many more. But even though we were faced with many undesired situations, the school still put in all their effort and time into ensuring that our batch does not miss out on the fun. For that, I’m very grateful for the opportunities given by the school that allowed us to enjoy our secondary school life despite the unforeseen pandemic which had affected our daily lifestyles. I would like to all my teachers who gave me tremendous support in my studies and also my passion. Especially to Ms Ruth Tang who had been my NFS Teacher for 3 years, I would like the express my greatest appreciation and gratitude to

her for always ensuring that I was able to cope in class and always concerned and took great care of my well-being in times I was not at my best condition. I would not be able to grow into a matured, respectful and responsible without the help of all my teachers alongside with me, therefore I’m thankful to each and everyone of them.

(4R6)

During secondary one it was a pretty unforgettable experience for me because i stepped into the school for the first time to make new friends after primary school. events such as the secondary one orientation camp, inter-class games, mid- autumn festival, and also post-exam activities such as bowling during pre-order covid times when my friends and i were all cheerful and happy. school was where we basically spent the most of our times at so i do have a love hate relationship with school. i also loved LLP lessons especially coding at the start of secondary two. going up to secondary three, as we chose our subject combinations, i also made friends with new classmates who takes the same lessons as me. although it was a tough journey, my friends were there for me :) and as this year was the last year together with my classmates i learnt that all of us actually grew up together for 4 years. school has really made such a huge impact on me and i really appreciate it. for me, this year was the most memorable year for me because i got so much more comfortable with everyone and from the bottom of my heart i love all of my classmates and im so thankful towards them. we had shared the good and bad times together and i wouldn’t ask anything more than that. i loved PE lessons too! it made me had so much energy especially after each run. summary: as secondary is a place for teens to learn and grow together, enjoy it while you can.

The best memory is the Milestone walk of course! I really enjoyed the milestone walk as i get to communicate with other teachers and hear from their point of view. One of the best core memory of being in secondary school is the Secondary 1 Orientation back in 2019 and also the friendships made! It was amazing and it was what helped every sec 1 students get closer and overcome the awkwardness. All the wonderful and friendly teachers will always be there for u whenever you need help , all you need to do is speak up and seek for the consultation.

The music room has always been a memorable place to me. Sec 1 to 2 where we would bring our recorder or flute and play like as if we’re in a band, or mrs poon bringing up stuff about her ex students or interesting facts about music. Playing the flute also brings me more joy as i get to laugh with my friends during brainstorming time as they play it wrongly or sounded weird. The times where i had

to bring foolscap paper and write lines if i never bring the recorder or music book is a painful but yet memorable moment too.

Noor

(4R6)

My four years at Bendemeer Secondary School have been memorable. The first person I wish to thank is my form teacher, Ms. Vimala, who has molded me into who I am today. Furthermore, I am grateful to all my subject teachers for their patience and dedication to help me succeed. Honestly, I don’t even know who I would be without the teachers I have had these last 4 years.

Li Li (4R8)

My last time together with my beloved class was at milestone walk 2022 with our teachers! As we walked, most of my classmates nearly gave up, but with encouragement from teachers and peers, they kept going until we reached our goal. It is the encouragement throughout these years that kept us going as a class. We are grateful!

Natasha (4R8)

Teacher’s Day was the last event we had together as a class, and we all enjoyed it! In addition, it was my close friend Azhar’s birthday as well, which made it memorable! There are more memories from the event too but I can’t say! Hahah!

Isa (4R8)

Milestone Walk is my most memorable event from Bendemeer Secondary School. It was our last event together before splitting ways and embarking on our next phase. We reminisced about our past and tried to predict the future. The walk was memorable as I worked together with my classmates and cheered for each other as we moved towards a common destination. I was thrilled with our camaraderie.

Xavier Goh (4R8)

Teachers Day 2022 is my most memorable moment. Screaming our lungs out and bonding as a class, it felt like we were back to secondary 1. The event was specially designed for our teachers who have been with us since secondary 1.

Hui En (4R8)

I remember every Teacher’s Day in Bendemeer Secondary School fondly. No matter what, our class will never make Teacher’s Day boring. We make sure there are a number of enjoyable activities to play that not only we but also the teachers enjoy. All the planning, decorating and spending time with the class makes Teacher’s Day memorable.

Juana (4R8)

I have had a truly memorable time at Bendemeer. For me, the milestone walk was the most memorable event, as it reminded me how wonderful it was to be in a class together. It was one of the happiest yet saddest days of my secondary school life.

Students' Reflections

Mr Esmond Loh is a very caring teacher and would stay back with students to help with the subject and ensure they have a fun learning experience. He makes sure students are into the lesson and his effective teaching techniques let the students learn to the best of their abilities. He creates an engaging classroom environment for all his lessons. Mr Loh makes sure students like the subject they are learning, instead of forcing the subject on them. He is one of the best teachers I have ever met and has all the qualities of a good teacher. He is good at communicating with his students, and possesses a lot of patience. It is very rare to find a teacher who can create an engaging classroom and make learning fun whilst caring for students and even spend his free time improving his students to the best of his ability. He truly cares about his students and makes a huge impact on their views for the road ahead. – Shu Fen, 1C5

Mdm Winnie Tang would try her best to make us pay attention to her lessons. If I have any problems or I don’t understand anything, she would come up to me and guide me along, and would ask me later if I still had more questions. She also changes our seating arrangement whenever she feels there is a need to. She will put students who are weaker in the subject in the front rows, and those who are stronger in that subject at the back. This makes me very happy as I had felt I couldn’t catch up, but now I can do better as I can listen better in her class and have liked CPA as a subject much more. – Qing An, 4R8

Mr Zuhri is very kind and although many people say he is fierce, I do not think so because he is really quite friendly. To be honest, I am a very naughty student and sometimes I will be late because I can’t wake up in time in the morning. When Mr Zuhri sees me running towards the gate, he will wait for me before he actually closes the gate. He also leaves the gate open for a little longer for everyone he sees coming and because of that, the conduct grade of many students who are late is not very low.

– Qingfu, 2R1

Ms Mavis Lee has been my Chinese teacher since the beginning of 2021 and she has always been encouraging and understanding. Once, when she noticed I was overwhelmed during an oral practice after school, she took the time to comfort me and was very understanding of my stress and feelings towards my academic work. She also reassures the class before every other exam, even if it’s a mock test. She tells us not to worry and treat exams as any other test so that we don’t feel much pressure, and I find that very comforting.

– Jing En,

Mrs Cynthia Ho is a teacher with many good qualities. She shows respect for her students, and often encourages the students who have bad attendance to come to school. She also tries to help students who have been absent because of certain reasons and tries to help them catch up with lessons. With such actions and qualities, she has influenced me to help my peers more, be more disciplined in class and to strive and do well in my studies. – Kuick

Mrs Yap Bee Hong has been my Math teacher for the past year since 2021. She teaches Math very well and is very concise and visual, linking the subject to real-life situations. She makes use of other ways for the class to understand, like fun activities and logic to explain the questions and answers to us while going through our daily class practices. I really appreciate her as I have never had such a teacher who is patient, kind and caring. Before our exams, she would cheer us up and have activities that would push us to go beyond our limits.

Mr Wilson Lai is my form teacher this year but I have known him since I was in Sec One. Even though he has only been my form teacher this year, he has been showing continuous support to the whole class. I really appreciate him because whenever I need to rant, or even need a listening ear, he would always be there by my side. He gives me good advice on what I should do and what my wrongdoing could be, instead of just assuming that it is my fault. He keeps a promise that he will not tell anyone something I have told him in confidence, and he has really kept it well. There are times when I need help and he would always help me out. –

Ms Shamini is my Form Teacher and my Social Studies teacher. She genuinely tries to encourage us to enjoy and do Social Studies even though she knows that most of her students might dislike the subject. Additionally, she takes time out of her schedule to always check in on us to see how we are doing. For example, there are some students who are struggling mentally. She helps them by constantly checking up on them and reminding them on what they should not do. There are times when she’s fierce or strict, but I feel like that is much needed when we are going overboard. –

Ms Kelly Lee Ai Ling is down-to-earth and is really the nicest teacher. She is also a caring teacher. Our NFS class will often joke around with her and we are comfortable to share our personal things with her. She would also sometimes share

her experiences with us. Not only that, she buys snacks for us. Ms Lee has really worked hard for our NFS class. I see that even though she is sick sometimes, she still helps us for coursework and ensures that we will complete whatever task that needs to be completed. I can see that she is doing her best in ensuring that her students will excel in NFS. I LOVE AND LIVE FOR YOU MS KELLY! – Ahmad

Mr Chin Jie is one of my favourite teachers. He is a humourous and caring teacher. Whenever we have doubts or we are unsure about what to do during lessons, he will always be willing to help out and give several tips on how to improve. He is an excellent teacher when it comes to teaching Physical Education, and has done an exceptionally commendable job!

Mr Glenn Tan is an extremely supportive and enthusiastic teacher who never fails to make my day. He is engaging and passionate in his teaching and often looks out for his students’ well-being. He ensures that everyone is in proper working condition by giving his pupils breaks and snacks once in a while to encourage us to work harder and give our best for assignments. I love how he sees us as adults and treats us fairly, and is always professional in his work. The best part is that he always keeps an open mind and constantly engages with us in discussions of contemporary issues. This makes learning much more enjoyable and productive in his presence as he also treats all students equally and embraces each student’s individuality regardless of race, gender and sexuality, a rare feat in our rather conservative society.

Mrs Lim Pei Lin is someone who is very approachable, and it is very easy to get along with her as she will always ask us to clarify our doubts to her during lessons. She is also patient and caring, and provides great explanations for students to understand their work. She asks students who are not doing very well to meet her after school to do consultations, allowing them to bring their Math questions that they are confused about and let her explain them again. She also encourages students to send her pictures of questions they are confused about on Telegram even on weekends and holidays, and she replies to them with elaborate explanations or sometimes even sharing them with the class to let the whole class learn.

Mrs Ng Qian Hui has shown her love and affection for her students in her teaching. I have always regarded Mrs Ng as a

93

huge inspiration. Even though we might misbehave at times, she always shows a lot of patience towards her students. She has always guided me to give my best in tests and assignments. Mrs Ng genuinely cares for us by understanding us, listening to us, shouting our thoughts and has always wanted the best for my classmates and I. Mrs Ng inspires me to strive to my goals and never give up. She would always make us smile and enjoy her lessons.

Mdm Karamjit teaches me Social Studies. She has always helped me whenever I need help figuring out how to work on the questions. She also makes sure that everyone in the class understands what she is teaching and she always goes through with us (multiple times if required) and would always give us some guidance for us to do our work. Mdm Kaur is really helpful and really understanding, and she does not scold us if we do not understand her lessons she understands that Social Studies topics can be complicated.

Mdm Lee Poh Ching always ensures that students who are slower in Math don’t get left behind. In class, she would sometimes slow down the lesson and explain the concepts again for the students who might not have fully understood what has been taught. Moreover, even though we have math almost every day, she still finds a way to make time pass quickly. Not only does she teach Math concepts, but she also tells us about life lessons. Instead of shouting at us, she will teach us about what we have done wrong. –

Mr Dave Manoj is my Form Teacher and my D&T teacher. I would say that he is the most concerned teacher towards my achievement and my goals. For my D&T coursework, my classmates ridiculed my ideas as they seemed impossible to work out, but Mr Dave was the only one who listened to my ideas patiently. Whenever I got frustrated, I would share my frustrations with Mr Dave, more than sharing them with my friends. Mr Dave is like my personal advisor and he would give me sound advice. When I told him that I wanted to join aerospace engineering in the polytechnic, he motivated me by providing some tips about aerospace engineering and shared some useful facts about aeroplanes. I would actually consider him as a friend more than as a teacher. –

Mdm Charlott Lee is one of the teachers who have been with me since the start of coming to Bendemeer Secondary School. She is caring and lets me have my free time when I finish the assignments given to me. In addition, she is willing to hear me out whenever I am feeling down or angry. She is there to always cheer me up. Furthermore,

even though she is not one of my subject teachers, she teaches me how to use new words and explains their meaning to me.

Ms Noor Aisyah is really patient when the class is noisy. When she is teaching about certain things in class, if anyone in class has any question, we would feel free to ask her instead of hesitating. She also makes the class fun when we have lessons together. Ms Aisyah is also a great listener and gives advice that can influence or have an impact on a student. I’m very grateful to have her as my form teacher.

– Naw Eh Gay Su Lwin, 2R5

Mdm Noorlizah has always been a caring teacher. For instance, in Secondary Two, when she was my form teacher, there was an incident that made me feel upset and emotional. She comforted me and shared things to be relatable. After the incident, she would check up on me. She would ask me if I was okay and if I had reached home safely when it was a rainy day. I have seen her also comfort other students. A friend of mine was going through a rough time and he was able to approach Mdm Noor easily for comfort and to vent.
