message Principal’s
Let’s BDMS!
Reflecting on my inaugural year at the school brings immense joy. Throughout the year, our school community has not only embraced warmth but also demonstrated a steadfast commitment to our roles as educators. In the pages that follow in this year’s school magazine, we reflect on a journey of Being Anchored in Values, Daring to Aspire, Motivating One Another and Strengthening Our Strengths.
BDMS not only stands for Bendemeer Secondary School but symbolizes the principles guiding us in nurturing our beloved Bendemeerians to help them recognise that they have unique abilities, interests and strengths, and believe that they have control over their lives; that their characters, values and aspirations are what will lead them to the diverse opportunities and successes in life, and not the circumstances they are born into.
Be Anchored in Values
Our values determine our character and define who we are and how we behave. Being anchored in values leads us to make the right decisions in our lives and builds our identities. It is our character and values that will lead us ahead. Our dedication to character development has been the cornerstone of this year ’s success. Through purposeful activities and programmes such as Applied Learning Programme (ALP) and Secondary 1 Cohort Camp, we strive to instill in our students not just knowledge but also an unwavering moral compass, preparing them for a future where character is as crucial as competence.
Dare to Aspire
Aspirations give hope and purpose. It gives us meaning to our daily routines and directions for the future. We encouraged our students to dream big, start small, stay focused and work consistently. Daring to aspire is the first step to living out each of their potential. Life’s journey is illuminated by the goals we set, and this year, our students dared to dream on a grand scale. Our Band CCA performance at the Esplanade as part of their Limelight Series and our Tchoukball boys emerging as Champions in the Active SG-TBAS Inter-Schools Championships are all stepping stones to greatness. Whether conquering academic hurdles, excelling on the sports field, or pursuing personal passions, our students have learned that aspirations, when pursued with determination, hold the power to transform lives. Within these stories of academic achievements, artistic expressions, and athletic triumphs, we celebrate their aspirations.

Motivate One Another
Motivation is essential for our well-being. Our students especially need motivation to remind them of the good they have and the encouragement that they can be even better ahead. Family and friends motivate one another to do right, and the Bendemeer family motivates one another to proper forward, and go further. In the spirit of collective success, our community has thrived on collaboration and mutual motivation. Students discovered

the value of not just competing but collaborating. This year, our hall often echoed with the collective cheers of encouragement, fostering an environment, inspiring all to reach greater heights. We will continue to celebrate efforts and achievements, and will continue to encourage and motivate one another. Apart our students winning accolades in various language writing competitions and the Mathematics and Science Olympiads, we have also celebrated them getting recognised by Singapore Land Authority (SLA) for their attention to detail and creativity in creating geospatial maps, having emerged as first in the competition!
Strengthen Our Strengths
To grow into confident young persons, it is important to be self-aware. While it is important our students learn to manage and learn from their weaknesses and mistakes, it is more critical to know their abilities, interests and strengths so as to strengthen them. Acknowledging the individual strengths within our community, we have emphasised the importance of building upon these unique attributes. By focusing on personal strengths, we work towards cultivating an environment where everyone contributes to the collective success of the whole. The result is not only individuals becoming the best versions of themselves but also blessings to others and our wider community. These efforts are clearly exhibited through our Learning for Life Programme (LLP) across the levels, as well as through their self-directed initiatives in participating in various creative competitions such as Thespian Lab’s Digital Drama Challenge and the Ministry of Health (MOH)’s ‘Live On’ Festival to raise awareness for mental health and organ donation.
As we leaf through the pages of this magazine, let us savor the efforts, appreciate the lessons learned from challenges, and marvel at the growth we have all experienced together. Each achievement, big and small, is a testament to our collective commitment to values, aspirations, motivation, and the strengths that define our school.
Enjoy the voyage within these pages, and may each narrative encourage you to reach for new heights.
Here’s to another year of BDMS!
Yours, in Education, Foo Sheue Feng (Ms) Principal

“During my time at Bendemeer, every moment has been a stepping stone in my professional and personal journey and growth. Learning from dedicated colleagues, I’ve honed my skills in an environment marked by care and passion for students. I will miss being fed such great food amidst a lively and lovely bunch in the EL department and the constant banter and learning from knowledgeable colleagues in the Humanities department. I will miss my students, with their boundless energy and enthusiasm. As I transition to a new school, I carry forward the lessons learned and camaraderie experienced here. Thank you for a great 3.5 years, BDMS (I miss you already)!”

“BDMS was my first school since I was posted here for contract teaching in 2015. I’m grateful for supportive colleagues who are always willing to extend a helping hand, and a warm community of administrative colleagues, canteen vendors and OSO uncles and aunties. A big special thank you especially to my department who have welcomed me warmly from Day 1. I’m also grateful for my students who have made teaching here so memorable. Everything I know about teaching, I’ve learnt it here and I’m thankful for my BDMS experience!”

“I started my journey at Bendemeer Secondary School as a foreign contract teacher thirty years ago. It has been nothing short of amazing. The support, encouragement, and warmth I have received from everyone has played an integral role in shaping me as an individual. The lessons learned, and the experiences shared will always hold a special place in my heart
I am grateful to the School Leaders and teachers who have not only imparted knowledge but also inspired and guided me throughout this journey. Thank you to my students for making each day at Bendemeer a joyous and enriching experience. Their enthusiasm and camaraderie have been truly uplifting and have spurred me to adopt creative and innovative teaching approaches. Though I may be leaving the school physically, the many memories such as Sorkalam Tamil Debate, Twinning Programme with Chennai schools and cultural celebrations will stay with me forever.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the School Leaders, School Management team and the entire school community for fostering an environment of learning, growth, and inclusivity. Thank you once again for everything.”
Mr Siew Weng Kay
Mr Siew Weng Kay served as an Operations Support Officer (OSO) in Bendemeer Secondary School for about 8 years. In his time here, he carried out his duties with a deep sense of responsibility and humility, touching everyone’s hearts with his warm and sincere nature. Mr Siew often went beyond his call and rendered assistance to staff members readily, even when they did not ask for it. He took initiative to improve different areas in the staffroom in his own quiet ways, ensuring that the teaching staff had a clean and comfortable environment to work in. We would like to extend our gratitude to Mr Siew and wish him a happy retirement!

Ms Chan Kai Gek, Angela, served in Bendemeer Secondary School for about 19 years. As Head-of-Department (HOD) of the Mother Tongue Department, she led her teams of teachers well in supporting Bendemeerians’ acquisition of their Mother Tongue languages, as well as enhancing the love and appreciation for different cultures and festivals. A forward-looking and meticulous individual, Ms Chan has inspired her teachers to always seek to develop their pedagogical practices and processes effectively, so that their students can deepen their learning. The GCE n-Level results were released on 19 December 2022, while the GCE O-Level results for 2023 were released on 12 January 2023.
Our school has continued to deliver value-added results, with many students able to progress to postsecondary institutions. Our Secondary 4 normal (Academic) and Secondary 4 normal (Technical) students have achieved a high level of n-Level passes. As for our O-Level cohort, we are heartened to note our students have achieved one of the best results in the last decade, with 1 in 2 students qualifying for Junior College and 95% eligible for polytechnic education.
We would like to thank all the teachers and nonteaching staff for helping our n-Level and O-Level students over the past four to five years. This support has been crucial to helping them achieve credible results and be able to progress to the next stage of their education.
We congratulate all our graduating students and wish them all the best for their future endeavours!

As always, the Secondary 1 students were welcomed into the Bendemeerian family in style. With their first week of school packed with numerous activities that engaged them both physically and mentally, our newest family members were quickly assimilated into the school’s culture with an extensive programme planned by our staff and student leaders. From testing their mettle on the sports arenas to expressing themselves via the performing arts sessions, the Secondary 1 students were also given the opportunity to see where their talents lie, a process that culminated in the ever boisterous CCA Day held on a Friday afternoon, when their parents were also welcomed by our Principal, Ms Foo Sheue Feng. It was indeed gratifying to bask in such a joyous atmosphere, with the cacophony of loud cheers and laughter being a celebration of school life returning to normalcy since Covid-19 measures had been lifted!

It was a morning of celebratory song and dance, with our student performers taking the stage to herald the Year of the Rabbit. We were treated to performances by our Choir, Band and International Dance members, as well as calligraphy works created by our school leaders. When the God of Prosperity entered the hall, he was met with thunderous applause and cheer, a joyous way of welcoming the Lunar new Year.

The After-School Engagement (ASE) programme aims to provide learning experiences and developmental opportunities for selected students to meet their social, moral, aesthetics and physical needs. Through attending the various activities organised for them, the students’ socio-emotional competencies are enhanced. Students discover their strengths and interests, and enhance their social skills as they collaborate in group settings.
On a weekly basis, Youth Workers and Counsellors organise project-based activities for the students. While facilitating these customised activities, they establish positive relationships with them. Working together with ASE teachers, school counsellors and student welfare officers, they have formed a dedicated team our students can turn to for guidance and support when needed.
Activities that students have been engaged in this year include badminton, floorball, Muay Thai, cooking, craft making, painting, movie outing, mural painting and dance.

Our Applied Learning Programme (ALP) seeks to deepen students’ knowledge in STEM education where students solve authentic problems in health sciences and healthcare using technology.
Students went through a series of lessons which used the Inquiry approach, leveraging on the 3Es (Engage, Explore and Elaborate). In the first phase of the inquiry model, students were engaged through fostering an interest in authentic contexts in Singapore. The problembased learning (PBL) approach exposed our students to real world healthcare problems the elderly in Singapore face today. Students used the problem-based learning approach to conduct case analysis, research and present on the possible solutions for healthcare issues. The joy of learning was promoted via experiential learning with practical activities, where students analysed and interpreted the data collected to further understand the issues at hand.
Students also developed logical and computational thinking that improved their digital literacy. The Secondary 1 students learnt the fundamentals of micro:bit block based programming to code and create reaction games. The Secondary 2 students explored emerging technology such as Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to build a smart home for the elderly. This year, 2R8 used Lego Mindstorms to do coding through robotics which heightened their interest and made lessons more engaging for them. We are indeed proud that one of our Secondary 2 projects was selected to be showcased at the STEM Learning Day.

2023 has been the year where Bendemeer’s modern dance club has dared to aspire to work towards our goal of attaining excellence. We started off the year strong by devoting ourselves in recruiting new members during the CCA fair. We then threw ourselves into rigorously training for our performance pieces for both the Chinese new Year concert and the Singapore Youth Festival 2023 Arts Presentation for International Dance. This was a trying period for us, but we did not fail to motivate each other every step of the way. For our perseverance, we were awarded the Certificate of Distinction.
Without resting on our laurels, we performed with pride during Bendemeer’s 46th Speech Day concert. The club was also privileged when we were asked to perform for our Vietnamese friends who came to Bendemeer for a school visit. In July, our club was honoured to be the opening act for both the World Youth and Southeast
To end off the year, we attended a local dance showcase competition, Super 24 which was held in the Singapore Indoor Stadium. This really opened our eyes to the level of dance in Singapore and it also inspired us to work towards the goal of participating next year. We look forward to what next year will bring us and remain

Bendemeer Concert Band started 2023 with a Bang! Boom! Boom! And a Wah, Wah, Wah! Our Band members were indeed very busy this year preparing for the Singapore Youth Festival Performing Arts Presentation in April and Limelight Concert in July. On top of these, they also performed during the school’s annual Speech Day, the opening of the Tchoukball Championship, Red Dot August and not forgetting Teachers’ Day celebrations in September and the Open House in november.

In April, the Band was awarded the Certificate of Accomplishment for the SYF Performing Arts which motivated them to look forward to their third performance at the Limelight concert at Esplanade Concert Hall on 20 July. This incredible concert was a memorable one as the band played to a full house! Most importantly, our band members and the alumni who played at Limelight gained a sense of achievement and pride. The Drama Tamil CCA students had been rehearsing tirelessly for months, perfecting their craft and embracing the essence of the Tamil folk arts through their performance in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF). Their countless hours of practice, honing their skills resulted them to achieve Certificate of Accomplishment. They were able to proudly showcase their performance at Kolam Ayer Community Club’s Racial Harmony Day Celebration 2023. Students were also engaged in a Speech and Drama course. Through this course, they delved into the depths of acting, learning the fundamentals of the craft. The students eagerly embraced the teachings of experienced drama instructors and channelled their newfound knowledge into their performances.

We began the year with the usual introductory orientation for the Secondary Ones. In January, we also celebrated The Five Amigos’ ‘’undesired Voice’ which was awarded the best production achievement in the Digital Drama Challenge 2022.

The highlight of this year was the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation 2023. Our piece, titled ‘Kites’, narrates the poignant tale of a dementia-stricken father and his reluctant son. The story is resolved based on filial piety and kites as a metaphor. While some took acting roles, others managed costumes, lights, sound and props. We were pleased to be awarded a Certificate of Accomplishment for our efforts. Those who did not participate in SYF worked on their mini-production to showcase to the Secondary Ones.
For Teacher’s Day, we showcased two skits, titled ‘Milo’ and ‘Motivation’, to express our gratitude to teachers. We look forward to another year filled with enriching experiences, growing stronger as a club.

This year, our Bendemeer School Choir participated in a number of events – beginning with the Chinese New Year Concert at Kolam Ayer Community Club, our school’s annual Speech Day and Teachers’ Day, the biennial Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation (SYF) and Voices of Singapore Festival 2023.
One highlight of this year was the Choral School Exchange with Guangyang Secondary School and Riverside Secondary School during the March holidays. We performed our SYF repertoires, exchanged tips and pointers in our singing and most importantly, forged new friendships. During the September holidays, we also performed at the Voices of Singapore (VOS) Festival 2023 at Chijmes. It was truly an honour to perform in front of so many people especially for our parents and friends, who had specially bought tickets to support our performance.
2023 has been an eventful year for us. There were many opportunities and experiences which will remain etched in our memories.

It has been an exhilarating year for the Bendemeer Secondary 1s Girl Guides. Looking back at the year brings us a sense of prid accomplishment. We are proud to announce that for the year 2022, our 1st Coy Bendemeer Guides achieved a Gold Puan noor Aishah (P unit excellence.
Our annual World Thinking Day (WTD) celebrations started in February. The theme for the WTD was Our World, Our Peaceful Future. Guides were instructed to download the Goosechase app for a wide game held at CHIJ Toa Payoh. Guides were involved with the Plogathon South event where they picked up litter as they walked. Bendemeer Primary Brownies joined our guides and it was enjoyable for the girls to look out for their ‘younger sisters’ during the event.

The uG Hike made a comeback in March and by April we were getting ready for the Passing Out Parade for the graduating guides. The seniors were involved in several practices for the event. After many rounds of skills testing, interviews and showcasing of leadership opportunities by partaking in school and Hq courses, the incoming Company Leader(CL) and Assistant Company Leaders (ACL) were announced.
Girl Guides Hq organised South Division Day was soon upon us so the guides got busy preparing for the various competitions. A team of Secondary Ones took part in the Culinary Competition while another team participated in the Fitness Challenge, with the latter doing us proud by emerging as champion for their event. We are also proud of our dance team for winning 3rd place.
Just before the mid-year break, the Girl Guides had an exciting time being involved in the dragon-boating team building activity together with other uG. The South Division Learning Day on 15 July saw some of the guides participating in the Gender Empowerment Session by Babes Pregnancy Crisis Support Ltd and the Emergency Helper Proficiency Badge. Guides were also participating in learning activities and crafts organised by the South Division via Zoom.
Apart from these major programmes and activities, Bendemeer guides worked towards earning badges such as the Health badge, Free Being Me and Cybersecurity badges. They also worked on tying knots, making gadgets and learning the essentials in Guiding.

This year the cadets had an exciting year filled with enriching activities. The Secondary One cadets learnt about basic first aid and CPR AED skills while the seniors took part in the First Aid Competition. The cadets also learnt about psychological first aid in times of emergencies.

Our cadets also went on a Learning Journey to the Health Science Authority (HSA) Blood Bank to learn how to be effective youth ambassadors to encourage and support blood donors. Service to the community is a core value that resonates with all Red Cross cadets and our cadets really enjoyed the purposeful visit to the national Kidney Foundation (nKF) to learn more about the scourge of the disease as we spread awareness about kidney health in a social media campaign.
Apart from community service, our cadets also served the school as first aiders in school events like the Sports Carnival and Mass Run, providing basic first aid to their injured peers. As a testament to the hard work of the unit, we maintained the Gold Award for Excellent unit Award assessment. This year, we will endeavour to maintain the level of excellence for our unit and always bear in mind our Red Cross motto of ‘Humanity In Our Hands’.

The year kicked off with the exciting task of recruiting Secondary 1 students during the CCA orientation. Cadets took charge, setting up and managing booths to introduce the world of nPCC to new students and their parents. Our cadets were also involved in a fundraising effort, selling plants to purchase biscuits for residents living in one-room rental flats. Collaborating with cadets from other uniform Groups, they distributed these biscuits to three blocks of residents in Boon Keng, exemplifying the spirit of service.

The combined uniform Group (uG) hike was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year. Cadets from all the uniform Groups participated in this challenging adventure, a 10-kilometre trek through the Southern Ridges, from Kent Ridge Park to Mount Faber.
Our cadet leaders rose to the occasion by organising a day camp for incoming Secondary 1 cadets. Despite a gloomy and wet start to the day, spirits remained high. Dragon-boat racing, the centrepiece of the day, taught the importance of teamwork as cadets paddled together to outdo one another. A team challenge around the school campus then awaited them. The camp concluded with a profound sense of unity and strength.
After a three-year hiatus, the Secondary 2 cadets embarked on a memorable journey to Pulau ubin for a 3-day, 2-night camp with cadets from Area 9 schools. This camp tested their endurance as they braved the elements and overcame obstacles together. The climax of the camp was the campfire, with our cadets singing their hearts out and proudly chanting nPCC cheers, reinforcing the bonds they had formed during this unforgettable adventure.
As we reflect on 2023, it is clear that it has been a year of unity, adventure, and growth for our nPCC unit. These experiences have not only developed our cadets’ physical and leadership skills but also instilled in them the values of teamwork, compassion, and community service.

2023 has been a rewarding year for the Bendemeer nCC (Land) unit. We obtained Distinction for our annual unit Recognition in 2022. This is testament to the hard work and commitment put in by our teacher officers, cadet officers, specialists and cadets.
With the resumption of face-to-face events, our nCC cadets were exposed to a wide range of activities which challenged them both mentally and physically. Earlier in the year, our cadets participated in a combined uniform group hike from Kent Ridge Park to Harbourfront. This was followed by a Dragon Boat Orientation Programme in June. Both experiences instilled values of perseverance and resilience in our cadets and gave them a sense of accomplishment at the end.

This year, SSG Bobby Leonard Gari of 3R6 was selected for his precise drills to represent the school and NCC as part of the NCC Marching Contingent at 2023 national Day Parade. Our Freestyle Drills team also gave an impressive performance at the Annual Freestyle Drills Competition at Anglican High School.
All in all, it has been an eventful year for the Bendemeer nCC (Land) unit. We will continue to challenge and develop our cadets as we build a nCC that is nurturing, Committed and Cool.

This year, our Bendemeer Tchoukballers have done us proud locally and internationally. Our B and C division boys displayed grit and resilience to clinch the championship position in the 1st Active SG-TBAS Inter-Schools Championships.
The B division girls fought hard and motivated one another through some tough matches to eventually clinch 4th position. The C division girls gained loads of experience from competing at such a high level, with many of them competing for the first time and we are sure they will have an even better showing next year.
In the international scene, Rayvien, Dylan, Ryan, Jay and Xanthea clinched silver at the Asia Pacific Youth Beach Tchoukball Championships in Taiwan as well as the World Youth Championships hosted by Singapore.

We are proud of Bendemeer’s Tchoukball team as they keep growing from strength to strength and we wish the players all the best in 2024!
