I am going to visit the Benalla Library.
The Benalla Library is also called the Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop Learning Centre.
The Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop Learning Centre (Benalla Library) is named after Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop.
Colonel Sir Ernest Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop was a military surgeon, who was known for his leadership while being held prisoner during the Second World War.
Sir Edward `Weary` Dunlop was born in Benalla in 1907 and later attended Benalla High School.
The Benalla Library’s address is 2 Fawckner Drive, Benalla. I can get to the library by car, bus, bike, or walking.
There are multiple car parks and bike racks for me to use.
When I arrive, I enter into a foyer space.
From the foyer, I can go straight into the library or left down the hallway to the toilets or meeting rooms.
The foyer has cold water I can drink. I can use a cup or fill my drink bottle.
There is a bin for empty used cups and a bucket to tip excess water into next to the water dispenser.
There are toilets I can use at the library.
If the toilets need cleaning or the toilet paper needs refilling, I can let a library staff member know.
When I enter the library, I will see bookshelves and people.
I might hear children in the library or activities taking place.
I will see people who work at the library.
They are called library staff.
The library staff wear lanyards and name tags.
The library staff might also be wearing a uniform with a logo.
The library staff are very friendly.
If I need to find a staff member, I can ring the bell at the front desk.
There are lots of things to do at the library.
I might see books, magazines, or DVD’s that I like.
There are computers in the library that I can use.
I can also connect to the wifi (BRCCFree). The wifi does not have a password.
There is an “accessible” computer available with a large print keyboard and ergonomic mouse. I can use the accessible computer.
I will wear headphones or earbuds while I watch videos or play games on the computer or devices.
This is a good idea so I do not disturb other library users.
I will need to bring my own headphones or earbuds with me.
There are board games, card games, and puzzles I can use while at the library.
I can ask the library staff to use these games.
I am not able to take these games home.
There are free programs, events, and activities for people of all ages at the library.
I can go online to benalla.vic.gov.au or pick up the monthly “What’s On Guide” to learn more.
Lots of people like to go to the Benalla Library.
Benalla Library may be busy. That is okay.
Sometimes the sounds in Benalla Library might be too loud for me.
I can wear my earmuffs to help with noise.
Benalla Library staff are available to help.
Sometimes I might need to wait to speak to staff. If waiting is hard, I can try to count numbers in my head while waiting for my turn.
There are items, like books and DVD’s, at the library that I can take home and return.
When I borrow something from the library, I must return it. This is called borrowing or loaning.
y y library staff can sign me up.
I will need my identification, like a drivers licence.
I will need to know my phone number and email address. If I am under 18 years old, I will need a guarantor to sign me up. A guarantor is an adult who can be responsible for my membership. This adult might be a parent or carer.
I can search for items to borrow on the Catalogue Computers.
Library staff can help with this task.
I need to bring my library card if I want to borrow something.
I can use a self-serve kiosk to borrow. Library staff can show me how to use the self-serve kiosk.
When I need to return items I have borrowed, I place them in the returns chute.
When the library staff have processed these returns, the items will be removed from my current loans.
There is also a returns chute outside. This returns chute is only unlocked outside of opening hours.
If I need help seeing what items I have currently on loan, I can ask library staff.
Benalla Library is a great place to relax, study, or meet new people.
There is a junior area for children.
There is an area for teenagers.
There are multiple areas for studying.
I can also just sit and read.
The library also has a digital collection which I can use.
These are apps that let me download books, audiobooks, tutorials, magazines, comics. journals, TV, movies, and music from for free.
Library staff can help me do this.
The library staff will feel happy if I say thank you and goodbye to them before I leave.
