Editor's Note Dear Bement,

Thank you for opening, or to be more precise, clicking on our Main Street Fall 2020 edition once again. As much we have grown enervated to hear the word “unprecedented” these days, we have now pulled our curtains to face the window into life at Bement amidst a global frenzy and apprehension. Carrying our discontent and frustration, for the insurgency of confusion from the pandemic last term led to jettison in our Main Street Spring 2020 edition deep inside our piles of google documents, we now come here with pride to publish an online edition this fall. Although some of our editors returned to greet Old Main Street under the lively Deerfield skies while others remain strew across the globe. We stand here as an unabridged community hoping that you can recline on your bed, take off your mask, vacate your head out of the tedious yet important mantra of “six feet apart,” and dive deep into our stories. From recollections of last spring to new faculty biographies along with wonderful studentsubmissions of artwork dwelling between texts, enjoy this feast of our fourth edition of Main Street.

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic started early this year, we’ve been facing an unprecedented crisis, causing endless anxieties around the world. Thousands of cases were found overnight and the death toll graph peaked in America around April.

Bement therefore closed its campus in the middle of the spring term and I had to find a place to stay temporarily other than the Jackson dorms. What caused more anxiety was that traveling across countries was tightly prohibited from the upgraded immigration policy, meaning my mother couldn’t visit the United States to find me a place to stay. I ended up receiving generous help from a day-student to live in her house until I had a plane ticket in my hand, ready to go back home. I developed an upended lifestyle in my friends’ house, unquestionably different from the life I had in the dorms where I PAGE 5 | MAIN STREET

was surrounded by dorm mates and dorm parents. I started to cook on my own each day, learned to wash my clothes, and cleaned up my rooms regularly. I felt lucky that life in the middle of a surging pandemic taught me how to be a multitalented student with the pen in one hand and the pan in the other! Without knowing when or how would school start, if it ever did, I spent my days hoping for a day to return either back on campus or my house located in Shanghai.

The situation seemed to get worse and worse. Bement decided to close its campus all the way until summer and implement a remote learning system starting from April. Most of the flights were either canceled or tagged with absurd prices.

With my filled to the brim with anxiety due to the possibilities of staying back in America until the next school year, CONTINUED ON THE NEXT PAGE

exciting words from my mother came to me from a call. It was right before China's new isolation policy started when my mother luckily managed to book the flight for me online. I was busy celebrating my mother’s words that liberated me from this tedious lifestyle, but soon enough that joy turned into anxiety again. My plane from Massachusetts to Shanghai looked different from my conventional flights I’d been taking during my Bement years.

Before arriving in Shanghai, I had to fly directly from America to Taiwan and transfer there to meet my final destination.

Nevertheless, with both hope and anxiety, I began to pack my luggage along with necessary protective equipment according to the suggestions by offered my parents, social media, and government websites a day before I flew out of America.

With a blink of an eye, it was now my time to fly out from America! After reviewing the SOP of Travel Hygiene countless times, I said final goodbyes to my generous friend and started the journey of returning home. Once I boarded the plane and walked down the aisle to find my seat, I saw countless passengers clad with masks, gloves, and personal protective equipment.

After getting comfortable in my designated seat that I had to spend the first 15 hours in, I was prepared to fly my way across the Pacific with a mask and squash goggles secured tightly on my face.

Anticipation and nervousness before the flight took off filled my emotions, but with the strong belief that courage will light the blow of fate, I indeed safely found my way back to China. Even though I arrived in

Shanghai after 20 hours spent in a series of planes and airports, my journey did not stop there. What greeted me in the airport were endless metal gates that replaced the once-familiar sight of a crowded mob. It was hard to wrap my head around such a peculiar scene I never would have imagined without this global pandemic.

My mom was there to greet me, and soon enough, we were in the car ready to drive back home. I was lucky enough to be one of the last overseas travelers to selfquarantine, meaning I was able to isolate myself in my house with the utilization of Health Condition Self-checking mobile app for two weeks rather than being assigned a hotel room. After two weeks of soaking myself with hand sanitizers, measuring my temperature two times a day, and having my phone dwell constantly in my palms, my journey finally ended after what seemed an eternity.

My experience of traveling from America to China without discipline and plan is one out of millions of stories from overseas travelers, as I heard a couple of my fellow Bement international students’ struggles to go back home. By means of sharing this memorable, but not quite favorable experience back from last spring term, I hope to alleviate the heavy feelings we carry from the worries and stresses of the virus. While it is crucial for us to take this situation seriously, wear masks, wash hands, and socially distance, we, as a Bement community, will find our ways to “virtually” hold out our hands and spread positivity.

ANSWERING THE CALL FROM COVID-19 THIS SPRING written by Evelyn '21

COVID-19 arose early this spring, filling our headlines with towering graphs of confirmed cases, upending our lifestyles, and pilfering Bement's physical union due to the shutdown of campus. Bement, however, did not forget to show their remarkable resilience in the face of a global crisis! We have courageously abandoned our conventional face-to-face experience and replaced it with a novel online learning modality. Still considering "virtual" integrity, teachers tirelessly crafted their online classrooms utilizing two main learning models: Google Classroom and Zoom. Changes to Bement’s learning system came along with the transformation of the daily academic schedule, which comprised a-sync classes and optional drop-in hours to accommodate different locations or time zones. With the new fluidity in a hitherto resolute schedule, students worked at their comfortable pace and gained independence in their own learning. Online classrooms further enabled Bement students to actively voice their opinions, reflect upon classmates’ ideas, and learn time-management skills.

meetings fostered a cordial ambiance that we once cherished on campus through our computer screens. With educational innovations and displays of courage from Bement, we triumphantly finished the spring semester through web browsers and documents last school year. What are the pros and cons of remote learning?

Mike ‘21 I am a boarding student and therefore stayed apart with my family most of the time, but studying online meant that I could reunite and spend more time hanging out with my family. I also learned how to manage my time more efficiently during last spring term through online classes. With the flexibility and tolerance Bement's academic schedule provided, I was able to distribute my time more easily, taking leadership in my personal school routine. However, it was hard to communicate with teachers during the spring term. Apart from the optional class hours, emails were the only way for me to ask questions and share my ideas. Even though I am still taking remote learning this fall as well, I am excited to hopefully meet my friends again during the Winter term if luck would have it.

Were there any obstacles in your remote learning last spring?

Evelyn ‘21 I was in Korea when spring online classes started. Time difference between Korea and Deerfield wasn’t necessarily an obstacle for me since Bement did an excellent job of offering asynchronous options for all of my classes and creating morning and late night Office Hours. However, what did cause me some troubles was the lack of communication with members of the Bement community. While communicating with teachers via email was an easy task, I grew nostalgic of casual discussions between desks to desks, cubbies to cubbies, and within dining hall tables I experienced on campus for the last three years at Bement.

Bement's response to Black Lives Matter movement written by Evelyn '21

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’”

A hefty black voice spoke about the crude reality of “Land of Liberty” in 1963; a country reckoning with centuries of systemic racism and orthodox beliefs highlighting the normality of white supremacy.

The quote above chronicles a morsel of Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech [1963], an address spoken with the degree of flair that portrayed King’s habitual demeanor. Woefully, his quote resembles the words of our black community in the year 2020, more than five decades after King delivered his speech on the burnished marble steps of the Lincoln Memorial.The recent murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Jake Blake, Nina Pop, Tony PAGE 11 | MAIN STREET

McDade, and countless more have put a spotlight again on black racism like Martin Luther King did five decades ago. These incidents have sparked the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement around the globe within and apart from the black community. Hundreds and millions of people took a step from their home with an onus to fight America’s blatant racism. It was a phenomenal and staggering moment that would succeed the 1963 march on Washington in the next chapter of black history.

But how did Bement react to the recent spark of the Black Lives Matter movement?

Bement has been dexterously trying to dismantle racism in our local and global environments ever since the rise of news about the Black Lives Matter movement.

Initiated during this summer, the Bement employee book group has been studying Ijeoma Oluo’s So You Want To

Talk About Race? holding their responsibilities to create a safe, diverse, and cordial environment at Bement. “Our aim will be to distribute the responsibility for confronting racism throughout the school community and calendar, so no one person or group bears the onus more or less and no one initiative or event serves as our community’s only outlet for confronting these issues, ” writes Mr. Scholat, the interim head of school, and Mr. Harrison, the president of The Bement School board of trustees, about the employee book group stratagem. “Most importantly,” Mr. Scholat and Mr. Harrison wrote, “we will commit to delivering an education that builds in our students the developmentally appropriate competencies needed to understand, confront, and dismantle racism in their communities”.

diversity, alleviating stereotypes formed on race, and arising for a change during school curriculums, Bement faculty have been exploring their anti-racist academic methods during summer to utilize them this fall. Apart from our Bement faculty, students actively participated in the Black Lives Matter movement as well over the summer and into this fall.

On social media platforms, namely Instagram, Bement students visibly expressed their anguish and distress over the recent murders of innocent blacks people. Using the given influence and status students have on their social media, they continuously reposted and shared contents about black lives to inform their followers about the recent uprisings followed by protests. Many of our nonblack students have also extended their solace and support for Bement black communities and vowed to use their privilege derived PAGE 12 | MAIN STREET

from their race to stand up for their black peers. Yosola, a ninth grader at Bement, showed grief to her fellow black community by attending a BLM protest that continued over Jacob Blake's shooting this summer. She mentions in her interview with one of our editorial board members, “I helped organize a protest in Northampton for Jacob Blake to raise awareness, and I started a business dedicated to Black Lives Matter movement.” Jacob Blake was a 29-year-old African American man who was shot by a white police officer seven times in August. Jacob’s shooting is one of many incidents that represent the corrupt, police system linked with racism in America— one of many innocent blacks that were violently assaulted or murdered by the police. She asserts that she holds a responsibility “to bring attention to black history and culture” as incidents of racially

stimulated violence against black people continue to be demonstrated. Yosola believes her journey in fighting against racism doesn’t end here; she remarks, “There is so much work that needs to be done until justice and equality is achieved among all races.

Until this issue is resolved, I want to continue to help in any way I can.”Even during these unprecedented times, we, as a Bement community should reflect on our capability to enact a change.

Dear Bement, please continue to inform your surroundings about the importance of adhering to the notion, “Black lives matter.” Put out a statement to condemn white supremacy and elevate the matter of equality. Be an advocate even when #BlackLivesMatter is no longer trending on social media and news. Be who we are as part of the Bement community: compassionate, inclusive, open-minded, resilient, and respectful.

BACK TO THE GRASS FIELDS written by Toler '21

Over the summer, Covid-19 spread across the world and upended our conventional lifestyles. Bement took quick actions to shut the doors and create an online program for students. This fall, however, Bement worked over the summer to craft their academic curriculum with both offline and online systems. “The OLST (Online Learning Support Team) - Marcia Bernard, Hannah Dancer, and myself was formed over the summer to answer a real need for faculty support,” Linda Temby, an OLST member says, “OLST provided extensive live and virtual training for faculty during the summer break.” Putting forward training for teachers and giving them tools needed to operate their classrooms to prepare hybrid classrooms of both offline and online learners, Bement prepared to open up its campus this fall.

get back on campus to see their classmates and teachers who lost their physical union since spring. On the first day of this school year, students learned how masks prevented some of the important social aspects of learning and interacting with people. Moreover, various ways to keep ourselves safe were announced along with protocols. It was crucial for the student body to be informed about appropriate manners on campus to provide safety for all in the campus. It was an honorable tradition at Bement to amass around the TCY room filled with cordial ambiance and spend some time as a community to share announcements. Sadly, due to the coronavirus we are not able to commune together, but instead, we continue our “virtual” union through Advisory meetings, Art group meetings, different grade meetings, or Friday all school

meetings. This virtual meeting helps us create an unabridged community between the remote and in-person learners as well.

Then we have the next two periods of classes like a normal day. During snack, we can have some rest and liberate ourselves from masks to eat if we are socially distanced. After snack time and before lunch, all students take one more period of class.

Again, the virus pilfered Bement’s cherished tradition that was exhibited in the Dining Hall once. We no longer briskly wait in line for the rag to wipe the table or meticulously scrape the remainders of food into the compost bin. Now, students and faculty fill out an order for what they want for lunch in the morning. At lunch time, we will be served a container of what we ordered that morning. This is how Bement decided to do lunch this year to be able to respond to the new public health situation. Once we get our container of lunch, we can eat outside (weather permitting), or sit socially distanced from one another inside. The weather has given us grace and generosity this fall, and many of us were glad to be able to eat outside while enjoying nature. With dismay that we no longer can interact with people in other grades through assigned dining hall tables, we still appreciate our opportunities to interact with nature instead.

finally, it would be the long awaited sports time. Since we cannot use the locker room, students either have to wear sports clothes to school or under their casual clothes.

With Bement’s modified dress code we can wear more leisurely apparel, which makes us comfortable throughout the day. We can’t use lockers to store our sports equipment; instead, they belong in our cubbies which makes it very challenging for us to fit all our belongings in a single space given. While we face slight annoyance from the lack of presence of locker rooms, Bement’s protocol is rational and crucial for safety. Even with the displeasure with handling our sports equipment and attire, sports is enjoyable as always. My offline experience is pretty similar to one without coronavirus. A few significant changes are the lack of physical union as a whole school rather than grades, mandatory sanitizing period of time in every classroom, and of course the company of face masks. We miss the people who are relying on remote learning this fall and wish they were with us to create a physically unabridged community again. I believe that Bement has some good practices on campus to prevent any feasible COVID-19 spreading or cases, but there is room for improvement. However, with the given flexibility in these implements for the student body to insinuate solutions and voice opinions, I hope we as a community can fight through these rigorous times and thus bring positive contributions.

Over the course of approximately two months, the Bement Boarding community has enriched its environment through their considerate responses toward the COVID-19 crisis. Consequently, many members of the boarding community have forgotten their anxieties, and in effect, are content with the current situation in the dormitories. Mr. Shields, the director of residential life, expresses his astonishment for the overall positivity of the boarders.

“I’ve been incredibly impressed with the way that our boarders have spent their days,” he remarks.

Since last year, the boarding community has assigned a theme, which they would strive to convey.

This year’s theme is “Make the most of today,” a motto emphasizing the importance of

perseverance—the step-by-step things one can do to tackle larger problems. “This means...not worrying about the past or what the future has to hold,” says Megan O’Brien, the assistant director of residential life, “but just...making the most of those little moments and what's happening right now.”

The boarding community has been full of these little moments— some being the weekly, Saturday campfires, where stories were shared among boarders and their dorm parents, or the trivia game nights, which tested the intelligence of each dorm.

Adapting to the boarding community’s changes takes effort.

The persistent isolation between different dorms provides an excellent example. Yet the community has managed to accept these circumstances while not only abiding by new regulations, but taking part in activities with enthusiasm.

COVID-19 Affects Sports written by Toler '21

There may not have ever been a more important time to keep students and adults active than our current fall athletics program during the covid-19 pandemic. Yes, we were all disappointed to not have an interscholastic season and to relish the thrill of a competitive contest, but we have shown resilience, despite the limitations. With the increased stress of the pandemic, exercise has been key to experience joy and connection through our athletic program.- Alex Bartlett, Athletics Director

Joyful cheers of teammates singing their chants, sneakers scattered on grass fields, and harmonization of various thumps were familiar senses I once cherished during sports. Even though this fall, students wear their masks and play their sports noncompetitively, they continue to express their exuberant spirits when the Kittredge bell rings for sports time. Sports have been able to continue even with the implications of the pandemic this term, but safety of the Bement community is the key concern for the Athletic Department. This fall, students were offered six different team and individual sports: soccer, cross country, recreational tennis, field hockey, dance, and mountain biking. Mountain biking was something new Bement offered this fall term while the other offerings have been offered at Bement previously; the trails at Pine Hill to streets of various locations are now lively with our mountain biking students who are tirelessly practicing their techniques. Whether students scrimmage in soccer while others put on their dance shoes, we always adhere to the public health guidelines presented by the state of Massachusetts.

I decided to continue my wonderful experience with cross country last fall into this year, not knowing how similar or different the training sessions would look.

Surprisingly, our innovative cross country coaches established a similar practice from last year PAGE 20 | MAIN STREET

while carefully regarding the new public health situations. One prominent change though would be that all runners have to wear our masks except when we are distant enough from each other. On Mondays, we have a long run day where we run around five miles. We usually start running from the Bement campus to Pine Hill out near the soccer fields, then around the cornfields. Before we call it our day, we all relax and stretch our bodies. On Wednesdays, we have our self time day; our cross country coaches had to be creative and think of a way to measure our improvements, since meets against other teams due to this pandemic are not offered.

Mr. Belcher and Mr. Bensen, two cross country coaches, therefore thought of a self time day. Every Wednesday, the cross country team goes on a two-mile run while we are timed, and this time is recorded.

Through this method of timing ourselves each Wednesday, we are able to keep track of improvement. Getting lost in the beautiful surroundings of Historic Deerfield from the beautiful trees changing hues or the sunlight breaking through the branches helped me alleviate my apprehension of a global pandemic. Running is my form of therapy. With the sports offerings at Bement liberating mind from classroom settings and let it wander in the breeze of Deerfield Autumn, and I cherish the opportunity offered for us to enjoy sports while ensuring our safety.
