Toothfriendly Test (pH telemetry test)

Method for assessing the cariogenic and erosive potential of foods and other products can be done through pH telemetry test. The pH telemetry test consists of the measurement of the plaque-pH and the exposure of the teeth to food acids that may be present in the product. The acid concentration is measured under the dental plaque after consumption of a test product. This test directly measure bacterial plaque without taking it out or using electrode to measure the plaque. Instead, this method uses an insertion of removable denture together with the real enamel. The electrode is placed underneath the denture’s base to continuously measure pH directly at the enamel by not changing any conditions of bacterial plaque. This method has been proved in the medical research that it is way more reliable to measure that which kind of sweet decreases the pH. The plaque pH-telemetry test is conducted by four qualified university institutes are Zurich University in Switzerland, Jena University in Witten, Germany, Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan and Beijing University Dental Hospital. Thailand aims to launch an operation laboratory at the faculty of dentistry, Chulalongkorn University by the end of year 2011 with the plan to send staff from Thailand to train and learn more in Zurich University.

Tooth-friendly Food and Beverages

In 2011, Toothfriendly Thailand Network will first target on the sweet products such as candies and chewing gums and will later expand its target to other food products. In foreign countries, many confectionery products such as chocolate, ice cream and beverages carrying the Toothfriendly logo must undergo a standardized pH-test in the laboratory.

Benefits gained to be in the Toothfriendly Thailand Network

To use harmless sugar in the snacks, candies and chewing gums is a new way to create an alternative choice of consumption for consumers that care about their oral health which would help cure the problems of caries among Thai population in the long run. For manufacturers, to have their sweet products labeled as Toothfriendly would help create the positive image of the organization by help change the old perception of people that consider eating sweets equals caries. Furthermore, it would help manufacturers expose directly to the new target consumers that have a great concern about their oral health.

Past Activities

1.Toothfriendly Thailand Network coordinated and hosted a meeting between Dr. Albert Bar, Executive Director of Toothfriendly International, sweets’ manufacturers and distributors in December, 2010 in order to set the common guideline for future cooperation. 2. Toothfriendly Thailand Network hosted an academic seminar for dentists on the topic of sugar alcohol in December 2010. This seminar aims to increase knowledge and understandings among the Thai dentists and aims to form a campaign network. This seminar was attended by 100 of dentists from all parts of the country. 3. Toothfriendly Thailand Network co-hosted the meeting with sweets’ manufacturers and distributors to discuss and brainstorm on the topic of the possibilities of the project implementation and the marketing plan. 2/22/11 12:55:32 AM
