Keep a journal It’s a safe place to write out your thoughts, even if they don't make any sense, Rosenfeld says, and research shows that journaling can help relieve stress. Try a gratitude journal, where you jot down everything that you're grateful for; a venting diary; or a reminiscence log, where you record memories of your loved one.

Find the right online help A few places to get started: Caring.com features caregiver support groups for a wide range of conditions (including Alzheimer's, diabetes, cancer, MS and Parkinson's) at caring.com/support-groups.

AARP’s online caregiving resource center offers a space to connect to others facing issues around caregiving for the elderly; so does the caregiver support section at AgingCare.com.

Organize with an app Apps for caregivers alleviate stress by helping you stay on top of the details. You can, for example, track appointments and medications and take notes at office visits. A good one to try: CareZone (free; iTunes and Google Play).

It brings with it a reminder to stop and give thanks for all of the things in our lives that we have, and the amazing friends and families we are all fortunate enough to have in our lives.

Thanksgiving is not just a placeholder between Halloween and Christmas: It is a time to express gratitude for everything that you have. Thanksgiving traces its origins to ancient harvest festivals.

It became an official U.S. holiday in 1863 under President Abraham Lincoln. In 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt signed a law fixing Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November.

From there, it has been feasts, football and family.

Thanksgiving is a time to express gratitude for everything that you have. Take a look around: You have so much to be thankful for!

Early symptoms of diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes, can be subtle or seemingly harmless — if you have symptoms at all.

Over time, however, you may develop diabetes complications, even if you haven't had diabetes symptoms.

In the United States alone, nearly 7 million people have undiagnosed diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. But you don’t need to become a statistic. Understanding possible diabetes symptoms can lead to early diagnosis and treatment — and a lifetime of better health. If you're experiencing any of the following diabetes signs and symptoms, see your doctor.

If you notice any possible diabetes signs or symptoms, contact your doctor. The earlier the condition is diagnosed, the sooner treatment can begin. Diabetes is a serious condition. But with your active participation and the support of your health care team, you can manage diabetes while enjoying an active, healthy life.

Healthcare News recommends that you should see a doctor if you experience some of the following symptoms:

Excessive thirst and increased urination Excessive thirst and increased urination are classic diabetes symptoms.

When you have diabetes, excess sugar (glucose) builds up in your blood. Your kidneys are forced to work overtime to filter and absorb the excess sugar. If your kidneys can't keep up, the excess sugar is excreted into your urine along with fluids drawn from your tissues. This triggers more frequent urination, which may leave you dehydrated. As you drink more fluids to quench your thirst, you'll urinate even more

Weight loss Weight fluctuations also fall under the umbrella of possible diabetes signs and symptoms.

When you lose sugar through frequent urination, you also lose calories. At the same time, diabetes may keep the sugar from your food from reaching your cells — leading to constant hunger. The combined effect is potentially rapid weight loss, especially if you have type 1 diabetes.

Blurred vision Diabetes symptoms sometimes involve your vision. High levels of blood sugar pull fluid from your tissues, including the lenses of your eyes. This affects your ability to focus.

Left untreated, diabetes can cause new blood vessels to form in your retina — the back part of your eye — and damage established vessels. For most people, these early changes do not cause vision problems. However, if these changes progress undetected, they can lead to vision loss and blindness.

Fatigue You may feel fatigued. Many factors can contribute to this. They include dehydration from increased urination and your body's inability to function properly, since it's less able to use sugar for energy needs.

Slow-healing sores or frequent infections Doctors and people with diabetes have observed that infections seem more common if you have diabetes. Research in this area, however, has not proved whether this is entirely true, nor why. It may be that high levels of blood sugar impair your body’s natural healing process and your ability to fight infections. For women, bladder and vaginal infections are especially common.

Tingling hands and feet Excess sugar in your blood can lead to nerve damage. You may notice tingling and loss of sensation in your hands and feet, as well as burning pain in your arms, hands, legs and feet.

Red, swollen, tender gums Diabetes may weaken your ability to fight germs, which increases the risk of infection in your gums and in the bones that hold your teeth in place. Your gums may pull away from your teeth, your teeth may become loose, or you may develop sores or pockets of pus in your gums — especially if you have a gum infection before diabetes develops.

“Healthcare Auditions” Simulates Working in a Hospital

Northern Westchester Hospital has a new program for people interested in exploring job opportunities in healthcare. The objective of the Healthcare Auditions program is to help you gain a sense of what it's like to work in a healthcare environment. Throughout the training, the participant will gain a greater understanding of the expectations, job skills, and personality traits one must possess to be successful in a healthcare role.

The program will be administered by professionals and subject matter experts employed by Northern Westchester Hospital. The curriculum will utilize a variety of training modalities including group discussion, classroom instruction, video, and simulated role plays.

Throughout the program, participants will be assessed on their teamwork, collaboration skills

and intrinsic ability to follow the hospital’s Planetree Patient Centered Care Model.

Based on performance during the training, a participant may be invited to interview for a position with the hospital or may be asked to exit the training.

Participants will be paid a stipend for their participation in the program.

Interested individuals will participate in an initial phone screen and will be asked a series of interview questions that assess the critical interpersonal skills needed to successfully work in a hospital environment.

If the candidate answers these questions in a satisfactory fashion, they will be invited to participate in the Healthcare Auditions Program. During Thanksgiving, it’s easy to go overboard with the calories and consumption. Temptations of pumpkin pie, grandma’s famous stuffing and sweet potatoes topped with marshmallows make it seem impossible to be disciplined.

But eating healthfully on Thanksgiving doesn't mean you have to forgo all your favorite foods. If you've got your eating under control for the majority of the time, go ahead and have a piece of pie — just don't lose control entirely.

Keep your willpower and your wits about you. You can do it!

1. Stick to healthy portions: Just one plate of Thanksgiving food is all you get.

Fill up half your plate with vegetables, fruits and a whole wheat roll, a quarter of it with mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes, and a quarter of it with turkey or ham. And, the more colorful your plate, the better – so get lots of leafy greens, carrots, bell peppers and beets. It's a holiday, so indulge a bit if your diet allows it. But if you're going to eat dessert, allot for the calories elsewhere – don't go back for that second helping of marshmallow sweet potatoes. If you're going for the pie, pick fruit or pumpkin pies because they tend to have fewer calories than chocolate or pecan pies.

2. Substitute healthy ingredients for unhealthy ones: There are plenty of ways to make Thanksgiving For mashed potatoes, mix in chicken broth, herbs or roasted garlic to perk up the flavor instead of adding in butter. For green bean casserole, swap out fried onions with toasted almonds for a less-oily alternative, and instead of having cranberry sauce, opt instead to make a cranberry salad. Another easy way to cut fat out of your meal is to avoid eating the skin on the turkey.

3. Eat before you indulge: Don't starve yourself during the early part of Thanksgiving Day, with the idea that you're just "saving room" for all the food, or that this will make it okay for you to overeat later. It's a recipe for overeating. If you're going to a Thanksgiving lunch, be sure you eat breakfast before. If you're going to a dinner, be sure you eat lunch or have a snack in the afternoon.

4. Drink lots of water and take a walk after eating: Many times when people think they are hungry, they are actually just thirsty. By drinking lots of water throughout the day, you'll lower the risk of overeating. It's also a good idea to take a walk after eating to get your metabolism going instead of lying on the couch.

5. Avoid snacking throughout the day: Abide by the "out of sight, out of mind" mantra. Once you've filled your plate with food, cover up the food and put it away. It'll help you avoid mindless munching. When you snack throughout the day, it's easy to lose track of how much you've eaten.

More than 1,200 Westchester area residents participated in the Westchester American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, October 4th at Kensico Dam in Valhalla to help raise awareness and funds to fight heart disease and stroke, the number one and five killers.

Many teams and individual walkers walked for their own heart health. But many walked in honor of loved ones who survived a battle with heart disease or stroke, or in memory of those lost to cardiovascular diseases.

Patty Macias of New Rochelle, NY served as Heart Walk Honoree this year to raise awareness for heart disease, and life-saving research. Two years ago, she experienced what she called a sharp shooting pain in her head on her way to work. It went away, but when climbing the stairs at the train station, she felt severe chest, back pain and jaw pain. She attributed the symptoms of chest pain, shortness of breath to being out of shape. She thought the nausea, sweating and rapid heartbeat she had in the weeks prior were symptoms of a panic attack.

Her sister convinced her to go to the emergency room where she was diagnosed with multiple, bilateral pulmonary emboli—or a sudden blockage of lung arteries by clots. An interventional radiologist performed a Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis, removing the clots through a catheter. She was also put on t-PA, a clot-busting drug. She was only 46 years old. Macias walked with her sister and family at the Heart Walk event and was recognized in the opening ceremony.

“I’m alive today because my sister recognized the warning signs of a heart attack,” she said. Heart disease is the number one killer of women. Women can learn more about their risk at www.goredforwomen.org.

One of the largest teams with more than 115 participants, Team Monie, walked in memory of Eugenia Sumone Taylor from New Rochelle, who died suddenly of a heart attack this past March at the age of 44. Dozens of members from the New Rochelle Cheer squad, part of Team Monie, cheered for walkers on the route.

Lisa LaRocca, News 12 Westchester reporter, served as emcee for the event. LaRocca told the crowd that she lost her own father, Anthony LaRocca, to heart disease. He was the Principal at William E. Cottle Elementary School in Tuckahoe.

The Heart Walk is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser that promotes physical activity to prevent heart disease and stroke, while raising funds for life-saving research. American Heart Association-funded research has yielded important discoveries such as the heart-lung machine, CPR, life-extending drugs, pacemakers, bypass surgery and surgical techniques to repair heart defects.

Hands-Only CPR training was provided at the event, sponsored by Westchester Medical Center. New York Medical College students provided blood pressure screening to combat the “silent killer” which affects one in three Americans.

I guess the more important question is really the tougher one. That is, do you really love your family?

Do you care enough about their future to provide for them if you are no longer alive? How difficult will it be for your children to chase their dreams, attend college, get married or start a business if you leave them nothing but bills and debt? It used to be that most folks wanted a better life for their kids. It used to be that most folks didn’t want their children to struggle like they did.

It simply amazes me to see just how many people who are married with small children come into our office and try to explain why they own no life insurance. This is especially disturbing when we know that term life insurance rates are lower than any other time in history. Most insurance agents and financial consultants understand why people do not want to buy permanent life insurance. Having said that, term life insurance equally protects your family in case of an untimely death.

White Plains Hospital opens lobby of the ‘Hospital for the Future’

White Plains Hospital ushered in a new chapter in its history when it recently opened the doors to a lobby designed to be as exceptional as the advanced care it offers to Westchester and the region.

Local officials and business leaders joined White Plains Hospital President & CEO Susan Fox, Board Chairman Laurence Smith, and Montefiore Health System President & CEO Steven Safyer, M.D., in unveiling the very latest in hospital design.

“This lobby is not just an entrance to a new building, but the gateway to a new era for White Plains Hospital,” Ms. Fox explained. “This is a major step in the redesign of our campus to better serve our community, bringing in more advanced services and an even greater focus on providing our patients with an exceptional experience.”

The new lobby is one of the first finished components of the Hospital’s capital improvement project, which will be completed this year.

The Hospital will have a new, sixstory patient tower; new operating rooms with the latest surgical equipment, 24 new private patient rooms and new labor and delivery suites.

The Hospital will add a second cardiac catheterization lab for heart care and will double the size of its cancer center. These services, coupled with its partnership with Montefiore, are transforming White Plains Hospital into the hospital for the future.

“When our transformation project is completed later this year, we will have a facility that reflects our stature as the hub of innovative, advanced care in Westchester County,” explained Mr. Smith. "We will provide a healing environment second to none.” Steven Safyer, M.D., President and C.E.O. of Montefiore Health System, added, "The newly designed lobby reflects WPH's long-standing commitment to a positive and welcoming experience for both patients and their families.”

The lobby’s design connects visitors to nature, both through the newly planted streetscape visible through the walls of windows and the wooden planters generously distributed throughout the lobby. Natural materials are used everywhere: elegant wood flows from the building’s exterior into the lobby and wraps into the entranceway. A walnut feature wall, glistening terrazzo flooring, soft carpeting, comfortable seating, greenery, and noise-dampening ceiling tiles allow for quiet conversation, relaxation, or even work. In addition, the Hospital commissioned an art installation by New York sculptor Paul Villinski, whose soaring clusters of butterflies— forged from recycled cans—inspire feelings of beauty, hope, and renewal among those who view his work.

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center’s 28th Annual Champagne Ball will be held Friday, November 6, 2015 at 6 pm at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Briarcliff Manor. The evening’s honoree will be Emil Nigro, MD, of Larchmont, Director of Emergency Medicine and TD Bank.

“In the course of 38 years, Dr. Nigro’s contribution to Phelps and emergency medicine has been immeasurable,” said Daniel Blum, Phelps President and CEO. “Honoring him at the Champagne Ball gives us all an opportunity to recognize the tremendous impact he has had in establishing the Emergency Department at Phelps as one of the finest in the region.”

A unique aspect of the event is the Fund-A-Cause auction, where guests pledge their support to a designated hospital program or service with the goal of completely funding the initiative

by the end of the evening. This year, the auction will fund the Phelps Emergency Department, where Dr. Nigro began working as a physician 38 years ago. He became Director of the Department of Emergency Medicine in 1984. A pioneer in emergency medical services programs, Dr. Nigro helped initiate the practice of providing lifesaving interventions for patients prior to their arrival at the Emergency Department. He was also instrumental in developing the Hoch Center for Emergency Education, where approximately 3,000 first responders receive training every year. In 2008, Dr. Nigro led the planning and design of Phelps’ new state-of-the-art emergency department.

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked.

When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared.

If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain.
