Where do doctors go to treat their own pain?

Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA—Internist, New York, NY “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those alltoo-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further.

After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.”

The beautifully redesigned space represents the culmination of the Building on Excellence Child Welfare Initiative, a three-year project that included the transformation of eight therapy rooms and the designated waiting area into warm, bright, calm spaces with fresh paint and cheerful wall graphics, new carpeting, durable, child-friendly furniture, functional storage and brand-new therapeutic toys and games, to better serve all the children and families who come to WIHD for services.

“They say good things come to those who wait,” said Danielle S. Weisberg, LCSW, director of both Child Welfare Services and the Children’s Advocacy Center at WIHD. “For the clients and staff of WIHD’s child welfare programs, the wait is finally over and great things have indeed come.”

Ms. Weisberg went on to describe the improvements in detail. “We hired a very impressive design firm, and they created a look and feel for our space that projected a sense of calm, and introduced elements of the natural environment into our cold, institutional space,” she said. “We chose furniture that would stand up to the daily use of high energy children. We created a wish list on Amazon.com, with the hope that friends like you and so many others would donate new toys and games for the remodeled space. We added storage so that the children aren’t overwhelmed by the sight of all the toys and games.” continued on page 8

It’s with deep sadness we share the news with our readers and advertisers of the sudden passing of General Manager James Stankiewicz on February 1, 2017. Jim was only 52.

Jim began his career here at Belsito Communications almost 16 years ago with Hospital Newspaper and was also a part of launching Healthcare News and Boomers & Beyond several years ago into Westchester County, NY and Fairfield County, CT. As many of you who have had the opportunity to meet Jim at various events our publication was involved in over the years can attest, he had an undeniable enthusiasm about his work and was very proud of the publications he helped to build.

As passionate as he was for his job, Jim’s family was what made him the most proud. His wife, Susan, and children Robert and Brianna were his life’s motivation as well as other family members including his mother, brother and three sisters.

Jim’s work family will always remember the jokester he was here at the office and how he always went out of his way to bring a smile to everyone’s face. He was an ardent fan of the Jets and Mets and spent many years coaching baseball to scores of youth in the local area.

Jim will always be a part of our Belsito Communications’ family.

Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital opens state-of-the-art, radiation-saving pediatric fluoroscopy suite

A new pediatric fluoroscopy suite at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), offers our region’s pediatric patients and families the highest quality, low-radiation diagnostic imaging – all in a calming, child-friendly environment.

The one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art imaging suite, designed in collaboration with WMCHealth’s technology partner, Philips, features low-radiation, ambient lighting, audio speakers and video monitors that play animated scenes to keep children at ease during important imaging procedures.

Fluoroscopy imaging is a video x-ray that allows radiologists to study moving body structures in real time, with the option to review captured video and capture still images. It is used for imaging procedures including upper gastrointestinal exams, barium enemas, cystograms and esophagrams, and can be used for more common injuries, such as broken bones. The equipment has the capability to detect the size of the patient and automatically propose the optimized parameters depending on the patient’s age, minimizing exposure.

“Infants and children are more sensitive to radiation than adults and require special consideration when undergoing imaging procedures,” said Adele Brudnicki, MD, Director of Pediatric Radiology and Chief of Body Imaging at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and Westchester Medical Center. “The suite’s fluoroscopy technology provides higher quality imaging for more accurate diagnosis of a patient’s condition in a shorter amount of time, and it does so while emitting low levels of radiation.”

During an imaging procedure, the child will see slowly changing, colorful ambient lighting on the walls and can select animated videos to view on large screens – everything from fish swimming in the ocean to hot air balloons soaring and pandas eating.

“Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital is the go-to facility for pediatric imaging in the greater Hudson Valley, and the addition of our child-friendly fluoroscopy suite will make imaging more efficient, more comfortable and most importantly, even safer,” said Lesli LeCompte, MD, a pediatric radiologist and Director of Ultrasound at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and Westchester Medical Center. “The ambient lighting and childfriendly capabilities of this new imaging suite are a comfort to our patients and families during what can often be a very stressful and scary time in their lives.”

Built By the Community for its Children Funding for the new pediatric fluoroscopy suite at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital resulted from the generosity of Hudson Valley and Fairfield County residents and businesses, which rallied behind the seriously ill and injured children cared for at its regional children’s hospital by donating funds through Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals campaigns.

CMN Hospitals is an international organization that raises awareness and funds for member children’s hospitals across the United States and Canada, keeping 100% of donations local to the community in which they were raised.

Funds supporting the construction of the pediatric fluoroscopy suite were donated to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital through campaigns at national CMN Hospital-sponsors with locations in the Hudson Valley and Fairfield County such

as Costco, Walmart, Sam’s Club, RiteAid, Marriott, IHOP and RE/MAX, plus special events like Extra Life, collegiate Dance Marathons and the 100.7 WHUD Radiothon For the Kids, which is generously sponsored by local businesses ShopRite Supermarkets, Inc., Saw Mill Auto Sales, Tompkins Mahopac Bank and others.

Pelham High School Junior wins first place in Annual Brain Bee at Burke Healthcare News - Westchester March, 2017

Emily Xue, a Pelham Memorial High School junior, came in first place at the 6th annual Brain Bee, held on Wednesday, February 1 at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. This local championship for the International Brain Bee is an annual, not-for-profit neuroscience competition for high school students and is designed to encourage them to learn more about the brain while inspiring them to pursue careers in neurology and neurological research.

The contest is open to all students in grades 9-12. At the event, the students are quizzed on subjects such as human neuroanatomy, neuroscience, types of diagnoses and brain cell identification by a distinguished panel of clinicians and therapists from Burke. This year, over 40 students registered for the event, coming from high schools throughout Westchester and Long Island, including Scarsdale, Briarcliff, White Plains, Pelham, Stepinac and Solomon Schecter.

“The Brain Bee is a great opportunity for budding neuroscientists to test their knowledge while also learning more about the brain and nervous system,” says Janet Goodman, LMSW, case manager for Burke’s Brain Injury Program and coordinator for the Brain Bee in Westchester. “These young women and men will be the future of neuroscience and this competition helps expose them to the profession and find out how they can be a part of helping discover cures for

injuries and illnesses that affect millions of Americans.”

Local Brain Bees make up the first qualifying round in the International Brain Bee competition. The winners then move on to compete in the national Brain Bee in Washington, D.C. The winner from the U.S. finals will go on to compete in the international championship later in the year.

Make healthy shifts in food choices at home during National Nutrition Month, says Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

During National Nutrition Month®, celebrated each March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encourages everyone to "Put Your Best Fork Forward" by making small, healthy shifts in food choices when cooking at home.

The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend making small changes to eating patterns to include healthier ingredients while cooking at home. Choosing a variety of healthful foods across and within all food groups helps reduce the risk of preventable, lifestyle-related chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity.

"Evidence shows that making dietary and lifestyle changes can prevent diseases before they occur," says registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson Angel Planells. "During National Nutrition Month and beyond, make small, healthier food choices – one forkful at a time."

"It's important to create an eating style that includes a variety of your favorite, healthful foods," Planells says. "Consider cultural and personal preferences to make these shifts easier to maintain."

To find a personalized plan that works best, Planells suggests consulting a registered dietitian nutritionist. RDNs can provide sound, easy-tofollow nutrition advice to meet your lifestyle, preferences and health-related needs.

Valhalla fifth grader receives The James Ranti Trumpet Scholarship

Trumpet teacher James Ranti was a fixture at the Music Conservatory of Westchester from September, 2002 until his passing this past December. At a memorial service held in January, many former students recounted the dedication and inspiration he gave to countless students over a lifetime of teaching. To celebrate this legacy, the Conservatory has named a scholarship in his honor.

Andrew Paucar, who began studying trumpet at the Conservatory in November, has been named the recipient of The James Ranti Trumpet Scholarship. The Valhalla fifth grader currently takes trumpet lessons with Conservatory faculty member David Hurd. He also takes Elementary Theory, and plays in the Latin Jazz band with his older brother Pablo, a saxophone student. Andrew attends fifth grade at the Kensico Elementary School in Valhalla. He is one of more than 80 dedicated students who receive needbased tuition assistance through the Conservatory’s Scholarship Program.

New eHealth Program Connects HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus with Westchester Medical Center Health Network Telemedicine Hub

State-of-the-art telemedicine technology linking HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), with the specialized WMCHealth telehealth operations center is now operational, further fulfilling WMCHealth’s commitment to bring the highest level of care to all patients in New York’s Hudson Valley.

WMCHealth’s secure, high-definition eHealth Program offers HealthAlliance patients personalized care from advanced WMCHealth specialists without having to travel to visit them. The specialists complement -- and do not replace -- the dedicated healthcare teams at HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus in Kingston.

WMCHealth’s eHealth program now in use at the Broadway Campus is stroke telemedicine, also called telestroke. Telestroke is to be followed in the coming weeks by telepsychiatry, teletrauma and teleICU services, or eHealth services at intensive care units. Telepsychiatry will be available at the Broadway Campus, at HealthAlliance Hospital: Mary’s Avenue Campus, a member of WMCHealth, and at Margaretville Hospital in Margaretville, N.Y., a member of WMCHealth. Teletrauma will be used in the Emergency Departments of the Broadway Campus and Margaretville Hospital. TeleICU will be at Broadway and Mary’s Avenue.

The new programs connect all HealthAlliance hospitals with WMCHealth’s 5,500-square-foot eHealth operations center, staffed by a wide array of medical specialists who use 20 multimedia stations to monitor patients in real time. The eHealth operations center is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“With WMCHealth’s eHealth program, clinical specialists in the operations center can evaluate patients, share information and discuss patient issues with us in Kingston as if they were here,” said Paul Llobet, MD, Chief Medical Officer, HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley. “The videoconferencing capabilities enable split-second medical decisions that save lives.”

With eHealth’s teleICU program, for instance, doctors and nurses trained in critical-care medicine will use sophisticated equipment at the eHealth operations center to monitor vital signs around the clock and collaborate with HealthAlliance bedside teams.

Vital signs, medications, blood test results, X-rays and other pertinent information from bedside monitors will be sent to the eHealth control center through secure, high-speed data lines.

This information will appear on the control center’s monitors exactly as it appears to bedside care teams at the Broadway Campus.

Critical-care specialists watching monitors that continually collect data will support HealthAlliance clinicians in spotting signs of imminent trouble. If a HealthAlliance patient needs attention, physicians at the eHealth center can zoom in via two-way camera -- close enough to read the tiny print on an IV bag or to examine a patient’s pupils. The eHealth team can also consult directly with bedside doctors, nurses,

family members and patients.

Incorporating telehealth in ICUs decreases mortality 20 percent and reduces the length of hospital stays 26 percent, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found.

To protect patient privacy, the cameras are off and turned away from patients when HealthAlliance and the eHealth center are not communicating.

Notably, WMCHealth’s eHealth program was recently used by WMCHealth doctors to evaluate conjoined 11-month-old twin girls in the Dominican Republic. The girls later flew with their parents to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, a member of WMCHealth, for a successful 21-hour surgical separation two weeks ago.

Celebrating 150 years of caring: Wartburg looks back on year-long commemoration of milestone provided

Throughout 2016, Wartburg sponsored several initiatives, informative programs and fun events to highlight its historic 150th anniversary.

Founded as The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School in 1866 just after the Civil War to provide a safe haven for children in need, Wartburg ended its services to children in 1979 due to changes in foster care. At the time, Wartburg fully transitioned into providing a continuum of care for seniors and their families, including residents and others in the surrounding community.

“Successful organizations never waiver from their mission and values. This is Wartburg. We are proud of who we are, and proud of what we do. We made the most of this anniversary year and now we will move on to new challenges, always thankful for the opportunity to serve,” said David Gentner, Wartburg President & CEO.

150 Years of Caring for Our Residents This year, Wartburg renovated its Meadowview Assisted Living facility, upgrading its lobby/gathering area and installed a keyless entry system for resident rooms. Staff and residents also celebrated the newly renovated Marie Barletta Café, named in the memory of a former resident who remembered Wartburg in her estate plans.

150 Years of Caring for the Community Wartburg hosted a Quarterly Speakers Series including two educational community events with a panel of experts on Alzheimer's disease and dementia discussing early warning signs, challenges to caregivers, the benefits of arts-based therapies

and advances in research and current clinical trials. Wartburg also hosted a book reading with award-winning NY1 reporter, Cheryl Wills. Wills authored “Die Free: A Heroic Family History," which chronicles the story of her escaped enslaved ancestor who fought for his freedom in the Union Army during the Civil War. Wartburg’s flagship annual fundraising event, the Jazz in June gala, featured keynote speakers B. Smith, lifestyle maven, restaurateur and author, and her husband and co-author Dan Gasby. The couple discussed their book, Before I Forget: Love, Hope, Help and Acceptance in Our Fight Against Alzheimer's, which details their journey after Smith was diagnosis with Alzheimer's Disease.

Wartburg also held several fun and festive outdoor events at its beautiful 34-acre campus. People from the surrounding communities joined Wartburg’s residents and staff to enjoy the historic Fall Festival, which featured entertainment, children's games, shopping and The Wartburg Orphans' Farm School alumni homecoming reunion.

Wartburg also welcomed the return of its Classic Car Show, which included a trophy for Best Sounding Car, judged by visually impaired registrants of its Adult Day Care program.

“We could really tell a lot about a car by listening to how it starts up. We knew the bigger, older cars by listening to their powerful engine sound.

It was great to feel that our opinions mattered, even though we couldn’t see the cars,” said Gwendolyn Lee, Adult Day Services registrant and one of the “Best Sounding” judges.

150 Years of History Wartburg also collected and cataloged historical artifacts from its extensive history, including digitizing a circa 1938 16mm film reel that featured a 40-plus minute documentary of the The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School. It is available to view on Wartburg’s YouTube channel (wartburgny) and www.creativeagingstories.com.

Wartburg also unveiled a self-guided Walking Tour, inviting residents and visitors to learn more about Wartburg’s impressive history.

Loud, sleep-interrupting snoring may seem like an adult-specific issue, but children aren’t immune. About 20% of kids snore from time to time, and in most cases, there’s no reason to be concerned by the nighttime noises.

But if snorting or gasping sounds accompany the snoring, it could be a sign of a larger issue: sleep apnea.

The condition, which causes pauses in breathing throughout the night due to the obstruction of airways, affects one percent to 10 percent of children. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, heart trouble, and poor growth, but luckily, there are a number of treatments available.

One of the most common causes of sleep apnea in children is enlarged tonsils. If a doctor determines that this is what’s responsible for a child’s excessive snoring, he or she may surgically remove the tonsils. And because sleep apnea is more prevalent in overweight kids, a weight loss program could also help.If neither of these options is successful, doc-

tors may recommend continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).

This involves the child wearing a CPAP mask during the night, which blows air into the airways to keep them open, helping to end the snoring.

Talk to your pediatrician if you suspect that your child has sleep apnea. In addition to loud snoring, you may notice your child gasping for air during the night, tossing and turning, or sleeping in strange positions in an attempt to keep airways open. Signs of sleep apnea may also show up during the day. Children with sleep apnea often feel tired, since the condition wakes them from their sleep periodically throughout the night.

In turn, they may have difficulty paying attention at school or be in an irritable mood. In fact, sleep apnea in children has been linked to a higher risk of depression and anxiety. The good news is that many kids outgrow sleep apnea, so talk with your doctor about which treatment method is right for your child.

Preparing for a good night’s sleep starts at mealtime. Certain foods, such as the ones listed below, can have a calming effect on both the brain and body. And if you're not sure how to incorporate each food into a dish, take a look at these suggestions.

Lean Proteins Tryptophan, an amino acid that increases serotonin levels to help you feel sleepy and relaxed, can be found in foods like turkey, chicken, fish, and low-fat cheese.

Combining foods that are high in tryptophan with healthy, complex carbohydrates also improves sleep.

An hour before bed, try having a snack of whole-wheat crackers and cheese or a small turkey sandwich on wholegrain bread. Or for dinner, chow down on grilled chicken and brown rice, a black bean and cheddar quesadilla on a whole-grain tortilla, or whole-wheat mac 'n cheese.

Herbs Certain herbs, such as sage and basil, contain chemicals that can improve sleep by easing tensions that would keep you awake. Basil can be sprinkled on whole-wheat pasta dishes or when topping sliced mozzarella and tomatoes. You can also chop it up and mix it with olive oil, garlic, pine nuts, salt and pepper, and pecorino cheese to make a pesto sauce, and then toss cooked zucchini in it.

Sage pairs best with fatty meats like pork and beef (which you should eat only in moderation). You can also put it on butternut squash soup or a cold bean salad.

Nuts Eating heart-healthy fats can also boost serotonin levels, and nuts—including walnuts, almonds, and cashews, as well as nut butters—are a solid source. Nuts are a great addition to salads and stir-fry dinners, and they can also be incorporated into meals as breadcrumbs on, say, a chicken cutlet. Or, mix sliced almonds with green beans as a side, combine walnuts with bananas in whole-grain pancakes, or smear almond butter on a whole-grain waffle.

Colon cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer when it’s found early.

Screening is the #1 way to prevent colon cancer because it finds cancer in the early stages, or, before it even has the chance to grow or develop.

While screening is the most important step you can take to prevent colon cancer, it’s not the only one. You may be able to lower your colon cancer risk with some simple lifestyle changes. Be proactive about keeping yourself healthy. It will pay off!

Eat Well Consistent evidence shows diets high in vegetables, fruits and other plant foods reduce risk for many diseases, including colon cancer. In addition to these foods containing lots of dietary fiber and nutrients, plant foods are good sources of substances called phytochemicals, which help protect cells in the body from damage that can lead to cancer. Plant foods can also help us maintain a healthy weight – also important in reducing risk of colon cancer – because many are lower in calories.

Diets high in red and processed meats have also been linked to colon cancer. Red meats include any meat that is red when raw, like beef, pork or lamb. Try to keep your red meat intake to 18 ounces (cooked) per week or less. Processed meats, on the other hand, should be avoided if possible. Processed meats include hot dogs, ham, bacon, sausages, among others, and cancer risk increases even with low consumption.

Get Your Exercise Research consistently shows adults who increase their physical activity, either in intensity, duration or frequency, can reduce their risk of developing colon cancer by 30 to 40 percent. It’s estimated that 30 to 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day is needed to protect against colon cancer.

Exercise also helps you to maintain a healthy body weight, which reduces your risk for colon cancer. In fact, studies show people who are overweight or obese are more likely to develop colon polyps, a possible precursor to cancer, and higher weights are associated with higher polyp risk.

Know Your Family Health History A family history of colon cancer puts you at an increased risk for the disease. A family history is considered to be an immediate family member (parent, brother or sister) or multiple family members with colon cancer or polyps. If you have a family history, you may need to be screened at age 40, or 10 years before the youngest case in your immediate family, whichever is earlier. Talk to your family about their health history!

Avoid Alcohol & Cigarettes Although modest amounts of some alcohols have been linked to protecting against coronary heart disease, alcohol is known to increase cancer risk. According to the National Cancer Institute, people who regularly drink 3.5 drinks per day have 1.5 times the risk of developing colon cancer as nondrinkers or occasional drinkers. If you do chose to drink, try to limit your consumption.

Long-term cigarette smoking is also associated with increased risk of colon cancer. The longer a person smokes, the greater the risk.

Phelps Hospital has acquired the most advanced method of minimally invasive robotic surgery, the da Vinci Xi Surgical System, for its state-of-the-art SurgiCenter. Manufactured by Intuitive Surgical, the da Vinci Xi can be used during minimally invasive gynecological, urological, thoracic, cardiac and general surgical procedures.

During robotic-assisted surgery, the surgeon sits at a console and uses hand controls to maneuver robotic arms while viewing images of the inside of the patient’s body that are displayed on a high-definition, 3-D screen.
