Exercise Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women in the U.S., but plenty of exercise can help keep your heart healthy.

You want to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week, if not every day. Aerobic exercises (walking, swimming, jogging, bicycling, dancing) are good for women’s health in general and especially for your heart.

Avoid risky behaviors Stay away from cigarettes and people who smoke. Don’t use drugs. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. Most women’s health studies show that women can safely consume one drink a day. A drink is considered to be about 12 to 14 grams of alcohol,

Check for breast cancer The American Cancer Society no longer recommends monthly breast self-exams for women.

However, it still suggests them as “an option” for women, starting in their 20s. You should be on the lookout for any changes in your breasts and report any concerns to your doctor. All women 40 and older should get a yearly mammogram as a mammogram is the most effective way of detecting cancer in its earliest stages, when it is most treatable.

With 2016 just around the corner, many of us are dreaming up how to be happier and healthier in the new year. But don’t think you have to choose a lofty goal. The key to a successful New Year’s resolution is choosing something you’ll stick with.

Here are 10 attainable – and effective – healthy-living resolutions to start your year off right.

6. Add meditation: Research shows that meditation can help people give up addictions like cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. Meditation has also been found to improve sleep, lower blood pressure, protect against depression and anxiety and increase feelings of happiness.

7. Buy a plant: By adding a living plant to your home or work space, you’ll help purify the air, removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde and benzene. Good options for improving air quality include aloe, peace lily, English ivy, bamboo palm, Gerbera daisy, chrysanthemum and spider plants.

8. Be a volunteer: Experts say our well-being increases when we help others.

Try volunteering to feed the homeless, offer transportation to the elderly, tutor schoolchildren or donate unneeded clothing and household items.

9. Travel: Travel can help improve well-being. It makes you feel rejuvenated and replenished. It gets you out of your typical scenery, and the effects are revitalizing.

It’s another form of discovery and learning, and great for the body and the soul.

3. Make time for tea: A daily cup of green tea can be a powerful health partner. It may improve your cholesterol ratio and help protect against bacterial infections and certain cancers thanks to polyphenols called catechins.

4. Get more sleep: Adequate sleep has a multitude of benefits. It can boost your mood, lessen your risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes and strengthen your memory. Although sleep needs vary, most experts agree that adults should get at least seven to nine hours a night.

If you find it difficult to get the ZZZs you need, try going to bed earlier or fitting in a regular afternoon nap.

5. Try a new activity: Weight loss one of the most common – and hardest to keep – New Year’s resolutions. Get moving with a fun new activity, like horseback riding, hiking, rock climbing, belly dancing or a beginner’s yoga class. The more you enjoy it, the more likely you are to keep it up!

Astorino partners with Latino U to help students go to College Westchester County is partnering with Latino U College Access to help first-generation Hispanic students navigate the complex process of applying for state and federal financial aid for college. The effort is designed to help Hispanic students and their families overcome language and financial barriers to attending college.

“We are proud to partner with Latino U on these vital programs for first-generation Hispanic students," said Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino. "For every family, the first to go to college is an achievement that has a tremendous impact for future generations to come. With this effort, we are helping students realize the dream of graduating from college.”

Latino U College Access offers several programs, paired with Spanish-language Community Information Sessions, that support Hispanic students and their families who are preparing to go to college, including: Essay Writing Boot Camp, which guides students through the process of writing college essays; SAT/ACT preparation classes; College Coaching and Mentoring, where volunteers work oneon-one to support students with college planning and the application process; and, FAFSA First!, where bilingual volunteers help students complete financial aid applications, such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the New York Tuition Assistance Program (NY TAP) application, to help pay for college.

Students who complete the FAFSA could be eligible for Pell grants of up to $5,775 per year and subsidized student loans with no interest while they are enrolled in college. Students who complete the NY TAP form and attend college in New York could

Shirley Acevedo Buontempo, founder of Latino U College Access, said failing to complete a FAFSA is a fundamental barrier to attaining a college degree.

Latino youth, many of whom are first in their family to go to college, have no help completing financial aid forms and lack financial literacy and information about applying for financial aid.

“Through our commitment, we are helping to improve the educational attainment of Hispanic youth in Westchester County by supporting their college dreams so that they may fulfill their academic potential and ensure the success of future generations,” Buontempo said.

In January 2015, Astorino announced a three-year contract with Latino U College Access as part of the Westchester County Youth Bureau's Invest-In-Kids program.

Daniel Heim, Executive Vice President of LeadingAge New York, presented Perez with her award during a ceremony held at the Pediatric Center on Tuesday afternoon.

State Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer was in attendance and presented Perez with the legislative resolution honoring the recipients of the LeadingAge New York 2015 Employees of Distinction Award.

Perez also received acknowledgement from those who know her best – her colleagues and some of the families she’s cared for. Perez’s work at the Pediatric Center was lauded by Patricia Tursi, Chief Executive Officer at the Pediatric Center, and Lisa Poskanzer, Vice President of Operations. In addition, a former resident and his mother reflected on the impact that Perez has had on their lives and a current resident performed Rachel Platten’s empowering anthem, “Fight Song,” as a tribute to Perez.

The heartfelt recognition was much deserved for Perez, who has worked at the Pediatric Center since 2011.She became department head in July of 2015. “Her loyalty to our residents and their families is no different than the commitment and unconditional love she gives to her own family, expressing empathy and compassion in supporting and guiding their life journal,” said Lisa Poskzaner, the Pediatric Center’s Vice President of Operations.

“Her professional development has been enriched by her selection to participate in the IGNITE Leadership Academy through LeadingAge New York and, while timeconsuming, it has not prevented her volunteerism in every special event held at the Pediatric Center.

Selena also serves on our Palliative Care Committee and co-chairs our Family Involvement Task Force.”

Perez received a bachelor’s degree in social work from Lehman College and her Licensed Masters of Social Work from Fordham University. Perez lives in Yonkers, N.Y.

‘Our Daily Bread’ Fordham Westchester recently hosted a screening of “Our Daily Bread,” an award-winning, 45minute documentary on emergency food programs. The screening and subsequent discussion about the hunger crisis in Westchester, which took place on Thursday, November 12, was at-

2016 Higher Limits for HSA Contributions

The 2016 limits on contribution and out-of-pocket spending amounts for Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and for the High-Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs) were increased again this year by the IRS. The IRS provided the inflation-adjusted HSA contribution, HDHP minimum deductible and out-of-pocket limits for 2016. The higher rates reflect the cost-of-living adjustment and rounding rules of Internal Revenue Code section 223.

A comparison of the 2015 and 2016 limits is shown below:

Here are some important points regarding HSAs and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act:

HSA penalties for nonqualified expenses

Effective Jan. 1, 2011, the penalty for using HSA funds for nonqualified medical expenses for those under the age of 65 (unless totally and permanently disabled) increased from 10 percent to 20 percent of the funds used for nonqualified expenses. Funds spent for nonqualified purposes also are subject to income tax.

HSAs and coverage of adult children under age 26

While the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) allows parents to add their adult children (up to age 26) to their health plans, the IRS has not changed its definition of a dependent for health savings accounts. This means that an employee whose 24-year-old child is covered on their HSA-qualified high-deductible health plan is not eligible to use HSA funds to pay for medical bills for that 24-year-old.

If account holders can't claim a child as a dependent on their tax returns, then they can't spend HSA dollars on services provided to that child. According to the IRS definition, a dependent is a qualifying child who: • Has same principal place of abode as the covered employee for more than one-half of the taxable year.

• Has not provided over one-half of their own support during the taxable year.

• Is not yet age 19 (or not yet age 24 if a student) at the end of the tax year

• Is permanently and totally disabled.

Westchester Medical Center debuts a new, visionary area of solace and comfort for Trauma Intensive Care Unit families

Dedication Plaque

Westchester Medical Center, the flagship of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, is now hosting families with loved ones in its Trauma Intensive Care Unit in a spectacular, new caregiver waiting area. The new space is more than twice the size of the previous Trauma Intensive Care Unit waiting room and includes several amenities designed to provide comfort for families during a challenging period.

On a given day, more than 50 percent of the patients arriving at Westchester Medical Center – the advanced care hospital for the Hudson Valley - had no previous plans to visit the facility. Many of these patients are treated in the hospital’s Level I Trauma Intensive Care Unit, the only unit of its kind in the region. Being a Level I center, the hospital cares for the region’s most critically injured patients. As trauma injuries are often sudden and grave, families rush to Westchester Medical Center in support of their loved ones and often stay in the hospital for long periods of time as their family member receives care.

The new Evan Lieberman Friends and Family Lounge was designed to accommodate and support Trauma Intensive Care Unit families. The new Lounge boasts more than 2,400 square feet of space

that includes an expanded waiting area with comfortable seating and multimedia touch points. In addition, since spouses, parents and other close family members need to be with or close by their loved ones during certain periods of care, showers, lockers, nutrition stations and modest resting accommodations for these dedicated caregivers have also been incorporated into the design. The newly expanded space represents an investment in resources for Hudson Valley families by the Westchester Medical Center Health Network and the Evan’s Team Foundation.

“Due to the unique nature of its services our Trauma Intensive Care Unit often operates at patient capacity and when it does, we host 15 patients with three or four caregivers at their side. That’s a lot of people spending extended time in our hospital,” explained Linda McGinnis, R.N., Vice President, Patient Care Services, Westchester Medical Center. “The added space and amenities offered in the Evan Lieberman Family and Friends Lounge will provide extra comfort for stressed and worried caregivers while aiding them in their support of their loved ones.”

An inspirational and motivational source for design and philanthropic support for the new caregiver area has been the Lieberman family and their local Chappaqua, New York, community.

Four years ago Evan Lieberman, then 19, was brought to the Trauma Intensive Care Unit of Westchester Medical Center after sustaining severe injuries as a passenger in a motor vehicle accident. With his parents and younger sisters by his side at all times, Evan bravely battled for his life for more than 30 days before finally succumbing to his injuries.

The Lieberman family was grateful for the medical care given to Evan, but felt the space provided to caregivers could offer more support.

For the past three years the family has worked with Westchester Medical Center officials to design the new caregiver area, and they have organized several fundraisers that have raised over $500,000 to support the construction of the new space. The Evan Lieberman Friends and Family Lounge, named in honor of their son and brother and supported by an entire community champions, is a tribute to all the families who spend countless hours supporting critically injured family members in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit.
