Event gave a Tour of the Center to Yorktown’s youngest patients

Children from the Pied Piper Preschool were invited to bring their favorite stuffed animal or doll to AFC Urgent Care’s Ted E. Bear Fair for evaluation and treatment by the Center’s “teddy bear clinicians” this past Wednesday, April 6th. The fair gave children a chance to familiarize themselves with an Urgent Care environment, as well as with the staff and procedures. Organized by AFC Urgent Care’s Outreach Staff and the Pied Piper Preschool, the event provided children with a fun activity and valuable information, helping to alleviate any fears they may have of the healthcare environment. Bears and other furry patients received bandage treatments, x-rays and full check-ups.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of our readers! We are celebrating mothers, sisters, aunts, friends and kids everywhere on May 8.

Mother's Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in spring. In 1907, Anna Jarvis, a Philadelphia native, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. She persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the second Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia. Jarvis and her supporters wrote to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. It was successful. By 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day a national holiday that was to be held each year on the second Sunday of May. While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May. Of course, some of the most special moms in the world live right here in Westchester County, from White Plains, to Rye, to Scarsdale, to Pelham.

Burke Rehabilitation Hospital presents the ThinkFirst Injury Prevention Clinic and distributes free bike helmets

Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, in association with the City of White Plains Parks & Recreation Department, hosted a ThinkFirst Injury Prevention Clinic on April 9, where they offered free bicycle helmets for kids ages 3 – 18, as well as providing injury prevention education to children and their parents.

Burke, a leader in medical rehabilitation, including traumatic brain injury, is the local affiliate of the ThinkFirst program, a national injury prevention program that provides safety education to school-age children in the hope of reducing serious injury. Burke physical therapists, who are ThinkFirst volunteers, present the program at schools and through community organizations as a way to help educate youth about personal vulnerability and risk taking behaviors. The program is offered free of charge.

“The ThinkFirst program is a great way for kids—and their parents—to learn and understand more about why helmet safety is important and what they can do to help prevent a life-changing injury from happening,” says Elizabeth Dominick, PT, DPT, NCS, program director of the Spinal Cord Injury/Neurological Program at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital and Chapter Director of the ThinkFirst program at Burke.

The helmets are being made possible by a grant from Fairfield County’s Community Foundation thanks to the generous support of Forester Capital.

The event also featured a car seat safety demonstration, where trained professionals will show you how to safely and correctly install and use your child’s safety seat.

Higher Guaranteed Tax-Free Income in this Market

Are you retired and need higher guaranteed income? Has the stock market and world events got you on edge? Traditional cash instruments like Money Markets and Certificates of Deposit are paying next to nothing.

If you want to stop worrying about the future and need guaranteed income for life, look no further than positioning some of your money into an Immediate Annuity.

Depending on what magazines you read or who you talk to, you will hear a great deal about the advantages and disadvantages of owning annuities. But frankly speaking, most people do not understand the basic differences between immediate, fixed deferred and variable contracts. The oldest version of an annuity is the Immediate Annuity.

Simply put, an Immediate Annuity is an exchange of dollars between an individual and a life insurance company. The individual deposits a lump sum of money in return for a guaranteed lifetime income often with significant tax leverage.

So what does all of this really mean? Let me explain. Suppose you are a 75 year old client with a savings account of $100,000 at a local bank. You are retired and need more income to pay your bills and live your life. So you decide to buy a 5 year CD with the local bank at 1.0% because: 12345-

Why would you take that same $100,000 and buy an Immediate Annuity:

Because Immediate Annuities are underwritten and issued based upon current age and life expectancy, it is an advantage to purchase them after retirement. So individuals and couples over 70 and even 80 years of age, can negotiate extremely high guaranteed rates of return for life. In today’s historically low interest rate environment, these yields can be up to seven, eight or even ten times higher than what they are getting now in traditional banking instruments.

Client suitability is an essential part of underwriting and clients must have significant excess cash in order to purchase these annuities.

The transaction will not be processed by the company if a large portion of the client’s portfolio is being transferred. The professional recommendation is to move positions that can offer tremendous interest & tax leverage for individuals needing guaranteed income with no risk for life. Moreover, Period Certain & Cash Refund riders can offer payment guarantees to heirs either lump sum or for 10, 20 and even 30 years, depending upon the age at issue. This way, in case of premature death, future payments or remaining annuity balances can be paid directly to spouses, children and other beneficiaries.

Going one step further, the client can opt to purchase a permanent life insurance policy for the full replacement value of the Immediate Annuity deposit of $100,000. Using our original example, the 75 year old client would receive $8,955 in annual interest from the Immediate Annuity and then use part of that interest to pay for a $100,000 life insurance policy costing $5,613 annually3. Thus, the client keeps $3,342 after paying the annual premium payment, more than tripling their current guaranteed bank interest for life. At the same time, they are ensuring the original $100,000 gets paid upon death tax-free to their spouse, children and other beneficiaries.

Sound too good to be true? Well, it is and these numbers are real. But the client needs to understand that the original deposit into the Immediate Annuity is an irrevocable transfer to the life insurance company and there is no future access to the original investment.

Here again, maximizing guaranteed income needs to be the primary goal of the client’s financial plan, and modest amounts of capital can be contractually guaranteed for a very competitive income for the rest of the client’s life through the use of Immediate Annuities.

Children’s Rehabilitation Center held a ribbon cutting ceremony and luncheon to celebrate the grand reopening of the Naomi and Isaac Kaplan Family Foundation Therapeutic Aquatic Center at the Children’s Rehabilitation Center. Our therapeutic pool is a vital part of the specialized care we provide to our children, who receive comprehensive medical and rehabilitative services at our clinic.

The Children’s Rehabilitation Center, an outpatient pediatric diagnostic and treatment center, provides comprehensive medical and rehabilitative services including physical, occupational, and speech and language pathology therapies, as well as feeding therapy. We also offer clinical specialties and services that include but are not limited to: orthopedics, physiatry, ophthalmology, neurology, neonatology, audiology and urology. In addition, we provide psychological and social work services, as well as Care at Home case management services. We offer a brace/orthotic clinic and an adaptive equipment clinic, too.

The Children’s Rehabilitation Center also boasts a therapeutic pool that many of our children utilize for aquatic therapy. On Wednesday March 16, 2016, Cerebral Palsy of Westchester’s School Program presented their annual Spring Concert. Each of the six classrooms performed two songs. A couple of the songs were played using only musical hand bells and xylophone pieces. Some songs included “Cheerleader” by Omi, “ABC” by the Jackson Five,

and “One Love” by Bob Marley. The Magnolia Room recreated The Black Eyed Peas hit song “I Gotta Feeling” and sang “Gotta Keep Reading” sharing the enjoyment of reading books. All of the students enjoyed singing along Music accompanist was provided by Phyllis Bethel from the Music Conservatory of Westchester. Cerebral Palsy of Westchester is part of the Music Conservatory of Westchester’s Outreach Program. Phyllis is part of the Music Therapy Division which provides group and individual music therapy for children and adults. Music therapy addresses the physical, emotional, social and cognitive well-being of children and adults with a wide variety of special needs. Music Therapy provides opportunities for social interaction, allows for emotional expression, increases attention, promotes growth in motor skills, increases communication skills and alleviates pain and stress.

Music therapy can make a profound difference in the lives of those who participate, encouraging healing, growth and change.

Three things to know about Physical Education in New York

The American Heart Association and SHAPE America released 2016 Shape of the Nation on the state of physical education in each state. While each state has a different set of standards for keeping kids active at school, here in New York we know our kids are not exercising as much as they need to stay healthy—and that can affect their hearts and minds.

Despite research that shows physical activity improves brain function and student achievement, school systems across the nation have reduced time in the gym learning critical skills and participating in physical education.

“Teaching children the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of exercise through physical education is vital to a heart-healthy life,” says Nancy Brown, American Heart Association CEO. “The research is as clear as a school bell that quality time being active also improves kids’ performance in other classes. Getting fit and fitting PE into the school day are non-negotiable.”

“We know that prevention is the best way to fight heart disease,” said Bob Elling, chair of the New York State advocacy committee of the American Heart Association. “A robust PE program is the best way to instill healthy habits in children, which they will hopefully carry throughout their lives. Daily PE is also a great way for our children to improve their immediate health.”

Shape of the Nation shows how New York is measuring up to national recommendations to keep kids physically active and healthy. The real impact of these findings will be how they influence the health and well-being of our students in ways many parents and schools do not yet realize.

Key Findings in New York Quantity Matters: Kids need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day and physical education should provide about half of that time in addition to teaching them lifelong skills to be active. The American Heart Association and SHAPE America recommend states require elementary students receive 150 minutes per week and middle and high school students receive 225 minutes per week of instructional physical education.

• New York requires just 120 minutes of physical education each week – which is less than 40 minutes a day – for elementary school students.

• New York requires just 90 minutes of physical education each week, not less than three times per week in one semester and two times per week in the other, which is less than 20 minutes a day – for middle school/junior high and high school students.

Quality Matters: A range of factors improve the quality and effectiveness of a physical education program – from training of the teacher to curriculum standards to funding– and this impacts each student’s readiness for a lifetime of fitness and hearthealthy living. National recommendations support state policies for all of these factors to ensure high-quality physical education programs are in every school.

• New York law currently only requires certified PE teachers for secondary schools. This short-changes the quality of physical education for our youngest students. It’s time to close that loophole.

• New York’s physical education curriculum hasn’t been updated for decades, before many of our current students were even born. The state’s plan must be updated more routinely.

• An increase in dedicated funding for PE improvements is also necessary. Many schools struggle with access to teachers and equipment. Future capital funding can assist with disparate burden to appropriate gym and recreation space.

Equality Matters Shape of the Nation provides our communities with a better understanding of what is expected of schools across our state. In addition to the measures of quantity and quality of our state program, ensuring equality is addressed in our physical education programs will benefit students’ the most. Research shows that active kids learn better, so it is important that all children participate in physical activity every day, regardless of student fitness or ability and regardless of race or gender.

Kids shouldn’t miss out on the benefits of physical education just because of their zip code. Heart disease and type 2 diabetes have a greater impact on communities of color, and longstanding racial inequities and socio-economic challenges leave many schools without the resources to provide physical education classes. The benefits of improving the school physical education curricula are

realized across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, among boys and girls, elementary- and high-school students, and in urban and rural settings.

Kids shouldn’t miss out on the benefits of physical education just because of special needs either. Active kids learn better, so it is important that all children participate in physical activity every day, regardless of student fitness or ability. National recommendations include individualized plans for students with disabilities and emphasize that physical education is focused on both physical activity and health education. Limiting access to physical education for specific students has consequences in the day to day academic environment and for their long term well-being.

Shape of the Nation is supported nationally by SHAPE America and Voices for Healthy Kids, an initiative of the American Heart Association and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The American Heart Association and SHAPE New York are working to protect physical education to ensure our children get the day to day physical activity they need for strong healthy hearts and have the skills and knowledge to prevent chronic disease and be healthy adults.

“But there’s more to a good video than it just being in focus – it’s the story you tell that’s important,” he says. “It needs to be an effective experience for the viewer.”

Fruits and vegetables These are packed with key vitamins and nutrients, such as calcium and fiber. Aim to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

Lean protein When you pledge to eat healthy, it’s okay to enjoy meat. The important thing is to choose lean meat. This includes boneless, skinless chicken breasts and turkey cutlets, and leaner cuts of ground beef. Broil grill, roast, poach, or boil meat instead of frying. Also try to avoid sauces and gravies that are high in fat and sugar.

Seek low-fat dairy options While many dairy products are rich in protein and calcium, they are also high in fat, which can cause cholesterol to build up in arteries increasing the risk for many major health problems.

Drink in moderation Drinking too much alcohol increases blood pressure and the risk of stroke. Aim to drink no more than two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women.

Watch your calories Part of eating healthy means having a healthy weight, which includes not eating more calories than you burn off. Calorie intake is based on gender, age, and activity level.

Plan Vending machines and fast food can be tempting when you’re rushed or stressed. To eat healthy, plan menus ahead of time and keep healthy snacks on hand.

Change your choices Simple changes in how you prepare and ask for food can add up to big changes. Choose grilled fish instead of fried. At a restaurant, choose vegetables as a side instead of French fries.

Stay positive It can take a long time to begin new habits in the way you eat and drink, so go easy on yourself as you’re starting out. Remember that every small change you make in the way you eat adds up to big differences in your overall health.

Ask for nominations from your crew. Announce your winner during EMS Week and notify the local media. Or, host an awards dinner to recognize the winner and all of your EMS practitioners.

3. Bring in a speaker.

Bring in a speaker who will inspire your staff. One year, Lehigh Valley Health Network in Pennsylvania invited Dr. Comilla Sasson, the attending emergency room physician at University of Colorado Hospital whose ED treated 23 Aurora movie theater shooting victims. Another year, they asked Dr. Leon Sanchez of Beth Israel Medical Center, who spoke about lessons learned from the Boston Marathon bombing.

4. Honor fallen EMS personnel.

EMS Week can be a time to remember personnel have died or been killed in the line of duty. One way to honor their sacrifice is through participation in The National EMS Memorial Bike Ride. This year, rides will be held from Boston to Alexandria, Va., in Kentucky, and from Reno, Nev. to San Francisco, coinciding with EMS Week. A fourth ride will be held in Colorado in June.

5. Say thank you.

Your EMS organization might not have much in the way of EMS Week budget. So make your celebration a potluck, and don't underestimate the power of a heartfelt “thank you.”

May Marks National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month patient safety, workforce shortage to be addressed The month of May marks National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month. The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), partnering with the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), American Thoracic Society (ATS), and the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) recognizes the devoted professionals whose compassion and dedication to the care of the critically ill and injured has made a significant difference in the lives of patients and their families.

At some point in their lives, nearly 80% of all Americans will suffer, or know someone who is suffering, from a life-threatening illness or injury. From heart attack and stroke, to burns and gunshot wounds, every day thousands of people suffer from critical conditions that place their lives in jeopardy.

In the rapid pace of the intensive care unit (ICU), each critical care practitioner must quickly obtain

information, effectively convert it into knowledge, and then apply it to the best interests of the patients at the bedside. There are many ways to organize care within the ICU, but data show that optimal care is provided when an integrated team of dedicated experts is present to assess, initiate and adjust treatment to ensure that the best possible care is delivered to all critically ill or injured patients the moment it's needed.

The core of this multiprofessional team consists of intensivists (physicians credentialed in critical care medicine), critical care nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists. Primary care physicians, physician assistants, social workers, dietitians, ethicists, consultant medical specialists, and other professionals are also often part of the team.

During the month of May, the Society of Critical Care Medicine encourages the public to applaud the efforts of the critical care team.

Wear blue on May 13! During the second Friday of the month wear blue to show your support of National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month.

Educate legislators. Join forces with critical care professionals to educate Senators and Representatives on the growing critical care workforce shortage and its implications for the future.

Recognize members of the critical care team. Take a moment to praise the critical care team members and other healthcare workers for their hard work and commitment to caring for a critically ill or injured loved one.

Learn about critical care. Patients and families are often confused about critical care, what critical care practitioners do, and the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. The Society's 10 Patient and Family Brochures are an excellent resource for learning about key issues within the ICU, including end of life, sepsis, pediatric critical illness, hospital safety, and more. These brochures and many educational resources are available at SCCM's Online Bookstore, www.sccm.org/ecommerce.

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked.

Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.
