October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As you might know, the color pink has become synonymous with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

With that in mind, Healthcare News has a request for our readers: If you don’t own an item of pink clothing, go out and purchase something pink.

According to Cancer.org, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. About 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime.

Here in Westchester County, our families, our mothers, wives, daughters and sisters have been affected by the disease.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a special time for to promote breast cancer awareness and provide information on the disease.

Established in 1985, this awareness month, now an international health observance, has from the start aimed to promote a mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer.

Most of us have been touched by breast cancer in some way. So it’s time for you to be pretty, or handsome, in pink. Even better, you don’t have to wear your pink garb only in October. Sport it all year to support the wonderful cause.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer.

Make a difference! Spread the word about mammograms and encourage communities, organizations, families, and individuals to get involved.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a movement that continues to grow, bringing much-needed attention to the disease.The month serves as a celebration of brave breast cancer survivors and those bravely battling the disease. Prevention is also key to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and fighting the disease all year.

What are the key statistics about breast cancer?

1. Avoid becoming overweight. Obesity raises the risk of breast cancer after menopause, the time of life when breast cancer most often occurs. Avoid gaining weight over time, and try to maintain a body-mass index under 25.

2. Eat healthy to avoid tipping the scale. Embrace a diet high in vegetables and fruit and low in sugared drinks, refined carbohydrates and fatty foods. Eat lean protein such as fish or chicken breast and eat red meat in moderation, if at all. Eat whole grains. Choose vegetable oils over animal fats.

3. Keep physically active. Research suggests that increased physical activity, even when begun later in life, reduces overall breast-cancer risk by about 10 percent to 30 percent. All it takes is moderate exercise such as a 30-minute walk five days a week to get this protective effect.

4. Drink little or no alcohol. Alcohol use is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.

Women should limit intake to no more than one drink per day, regardless of the type of alcohol.

5. Avoid hormone replacement therapy. Menopausal hormone therapy increases risk for breast cancer. If you must take hormones to manage menopausal symptoms, avoid those that contain progesterone and limit their use to less than three years. “Bioidentical hormones” and hormonal creams and gels are no safer than prescription hormones and should also be avoided.

6. Consider taking an estrogen-blocking drug.

Women with a family history of breast cancer or who are over age 60 should talk to their doctor about the pros and cons of estrogenblocking drugs such as tamoxifen and raloxifene.

7. Don’t smoke. Research suggests that long-term smoking is associated with increased risk of breast cancer in some women.

8. Breast-feed your babies for as long as possible. Women who breast-feed their babies for at least a year in total have a reduced risk of developing breast cancer later.

• Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancer. About 1 in 8 (12%) women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime.

• About 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.

• About 60,290 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).

• About 40,290 women will die from breast cancer • After increasing for more than 2 decades, female breast cancer incidence rates began decreasing in 2000, then dropped by about 7% from 2002 to 2003. This large decrease was thought to be due to the decline in use of hormone therapy after menopause that occurred after the results of the Women's Health Initiative were published in 2002. This study linked the use of hormone therapy to an increased risk of breast cancer and heart diseases. In recent years, incidence rates have been stable in white women, but have increased slightly in African American women.

• Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. The chance that breast cancer will be responsible for a woman's death is about 1 in 36 (about 3%). Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1989, with larger decreases in women younger than 50.

These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment.

• At this time there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

This new alliance will enhance the missions of both institutions by aligning each of their core strengths and creating a collaboration that will enhance patient experiences and results.

Montefiore and Burke have formerly signed a letter of intent and filed a certificate of need.

Pending New York State Regulatory approval, the agreement would establish Burke as a hub in Westchester for acute, comprehensive rehabilitative care.

“This new partnership will allow Burke to offer its established, high quality medical rehabilitation to more patients, to help improve their outcomes, while collaborating with an organization that supports the Burke mission," said Mary Beth Walsh, M.D., chief executive officer and executive medical director at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital.

Burke, which specializes in neurological, orthopedic and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, will continue to operate as an inpatient rehabilitation hospital under the Burke brand, as well as operate its outpatient clinics and programs throughout Westchester County, the Bronx and the Hudson Valley.

Burke Medical Research Institute will remain independent of the Montefiore Health System, but will continue to work closely with Burke Rehabilitation Hospital to

develop new therapeutic approaches for a host of impairments that cause disability.

The partnership will allow the combination of the complementary strengths of both institutions to create new rehabilitative care models which will further worldclass provider education and advance the role of rehabilitation medicine in the team-based care model advanced by Montefiore.

400,000 lives throughout the Bronx, Westchester and Northern Manhattan, and plans to continue to expand this approach to better serve residents of Westchester and throughout the Hudson Valley.

Bronxville couple celebrate survivorship together

Just months after Sandy Hayes beat her breast cancer and recovered from a doublemastectomy, her husband, Bob Ward, found out he had a heart complication, kidney stones, and lymphoma. But the Bronxville couple, both in their late 60s at the time, stayed positive throughout both diagnoses and treatments; Sandy walked to almost every treatment at Lawrence Hospital and Bob continued to work his part-time job at a local golf course. He even continued to play golf during treatment, and no one at the club ever suspected he was sick, he said.

“Neither of us ever thought that anything but a good outcome would come of it,” Bob said. “We stayed positive and never thought of the worst.”

Today, two years since Sandy's victory over cancer and one year since Bob's, the two are in excellent health. While they attribute their success to their positive attitude and healthy lifestyle, they are also very grateful to have had a local hospital that offers highly professional, quality cancer care and treatment.

“We are extremely grateful and happy that Sandy made the decision to stay local,” Bob said, after explaining that he was originally against Sandy's insistence to be treated at Lawrence.

Bob, New York City born and raised was adamant that Sandy undergo treatment at a city hospital, believing that was the only option for high-quality care. But Sandy was determined to be able to walk to her treatments, and had confidence in Lawrence.

“I knew driving to the city would cause more stress,” Sandy said. Once she convinced Bob to meet her Lawrence doctor, who is also an assistant professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Bob felt confident Sandy would be well cared for. “We felt we were getting the best of both worlds at Lawrence,” Sandy said.

Bob was very impressed with Sandy's oncology team and with what he learned of the cancer care program. “I was pleasantly surprised and very pleased at the professional care, concern and compassion they demonstrated while dealing with Sandy's cancer.”

When it came time for Bob to embark on his own fight against cancer, he did not think twice about where he wanted to be treated.

“It is hard to say that treatment can be enjoyable, but being treated at Lawrence made the whole experience as enjoyable as it could possibly be,” Bob said.

Bob and Sandy are now cancer-free and continuing to live life to the fullest. Bob still golfs regularly and Sandy is active with NYP/Lawrence's cancer survivor and breast cancer survivor support groups.

“We walked by the hospital every day and were glad we didn't need it. But when we needed it, it was here,” Bob said.

Next year, as NYP/Lawrence Hospital celebrates National Cancer Survivor Day, the new Surgery and Oncology Pavilion will be open and treating more patients like Sandy and Bob, providing them the benefit of quality cancer care close to home.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Medical Administrative Assistants are designated as one of the “Fastest Growing Occupations” and have a projected increase in employment over the next 10 years of 36%.

Westchester Community College is offering a 100-hour course called “Medical Administrative Assistant Training.” This non-credit program will train students on the concepts and procedures needed to become a Medical Administrative Assistant in a variety of healthcare settings. When students successfully complete the program, they become eligible to take the Medical Administrative Assistant Certification exam (CMAA) offered by the National Healthcareer Association. This program is ideal for both people who are already employed in a medical administration job and those who are looking to move into it.

Making the Case for Beneficiary Reviews

By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC Designating a beneficiary can be an obvious choice for many people. It is usually your spouse and/or your children. It is a private decision while you are alive, but it immediately becomes a permanent decision after you die. Everyone wants to maintain control of their financial accounts and insurance payouts, which is why it is so important that you choose someone to inherit your assets.

However, what if you forget to change your beneficiary designations after a divorce or falling out with listed beneficiary? Don’t forget that beneficiary designations supersede language in a will and bypass probate.

They can even have priority over a court-ordered judgment…!

And just how important are contingent or secondary beneficiaries? Consider the following hypothetical example:

It was a second marriage for both Jim and Mary. Jim had a son from his previous marriage while Mary had two daughters from hers. They both knew it was important to have a plan to dispose of their assets. In fact, they had named each other as primary beneficiaries on their life insurance policies, IRA’s and bank accounts and purchased their home as joint tenants.

Unfortunately, they never got around to creating simple wills or designating contingent beneficiaries, and then the unthinkable happened. Jim and Mary were both involved in a head-on car collision. Mary was killed instantly and Jim survived for only 10 days. Because Jim passed after Mary, the house, and all of their life insurance, qualified assets, savings accounts and investments were distributed to Jim’s son.

Mary’s daughters were left with nothing.

Is that how Jim and Mary would have wanted their assets distributed? Probably not, but once someone dies, it’s impossible to understand what their intentions really were. This serves to remind us exactly how important both primary AND contingent beneficiary designations truly are. Unfortunately, many clients are never reminded to keep them up-to-date according to their wishes – and as we have seen, the results can be devastating.

Conducting periodic beneficiary reviews with your advisor every few years is an excellent way to guarantee that the people you care about the most in life are also the same people to receive your assets in death.

Surprising way to shed pregnancy weight fast

more calories a day. Burning 500 extra calories a day can mean one pound of weight loss per week.

This calorie-loss boost, combined with increased activity, can help to accelerate your weight loss. Of course you’ll want to limit your calorie intake somewhat. But don’t go to extremes in cutting back. As a breastfeeding mom, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting enough nutrients and calories to properly nourish your baby. Breast milk transfers nutrients to your baby. So you’ll want to make sure you’re eating enough food and the most nutritious type to nourish you both. Good food choices include fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and low-fat dairy.

In additional to helping you to lose the weight you gained during pregnancy, breastfeeding is one of the best things you can do for your child.

White Plains Hospital celebrates Nurse Apprentice Graduation

White Plains Hospital recently recognized 22 students who completed an intensive, seven-week apprenticeship program during the summer months. A graduation ceremony was held in the hospital’s auditorium, attended by Hospital leaders, staff members, the graduates and their families. Representatives from the offices of Congresswoman Nita Lowey, who is a longtime supporter of the program; New York State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins; and Westchester Country Executive Rob Astorino were also in attendance.

“This is a highly selective program and we are once again very fortunate to be congratulating a truly amazing group of young men and women who have shown such passion and dedication in their path to a nursing career,” said Annie Norris, M.S. Nurse Apprentice Program Counselor. “It is wonderful for us to see them develop and gain valuable experience that they can carry with them for years to come, and the Hospital, in turn, benefits as well by hiring so many of them back as fulltime nurses after they complete their studies.”

Named after the late Richard P. Biondi, who was a Senior Vice President of White Plains Hospital and was instrumental in leading fundraising initiatives on its behalf, the nurse apprentice program has been coordinated by Norris and Monica Purdy. They direct the community outreach program at local schools and screen, select, evaluate and oversee the apprentices. The program was initially made possible by a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, as well as funding from White Plains Hospital.

“After 10 very successful years, we know with certainty that the Nurse Apprentice Program brings top talent to our organization, and also gives nursing students an edge in today’s competitive job market,” said White Plains Hospital Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer, Leigh Anne McMahon, RN. “It’s a win-win.”

This year’s apprentices are:

During the rigorous full-time, five days per week program schedule, the apprentices experience working in clinical areas in the Hospital including pediatrics, the emergency department, endoscopy, post-anesthesia care unit, ICU step-down, labor and delivery, maternal-child, medical-surgical, oncology and neonatal intensive care. They also perform supervised tasks such as answering call bells, taking vital signs, assisting patients with meals, assisting nurses as needed and sitting with patients, reading to them and keeping them company. They further receive instruction from members of the nursing staff on a range of topics such as patient safety, infection control, and general patient care.

Fordham Westchester launches Healthcare Management Certificate Program

Fordham University’s Gabelli Graduate School of Business has announced a Post-Master’s Healthcare Certificate program that focuses on the challenges healthcare managers face in caring for the frail, seriously ill and dying.

Titled Palliative and Long-Term Care: A PublicHealth Approach, the weekend-intensive program starts on Friday, October 16 and runs through Monday, October 19. A second weekend intensive program will be held February 12-15, 2016. Tuition is $2,700 per person and $2,500 for Fordham alumni.

Volunteers needed in Westchester County for mass dispensing drill on Sept. 30

Just like other first responders, the Westchester County Health Department prepares and trains for emergencies. On September 30, the health department will hold a mass dispensing drill at the Westchester County Center, and we need residents to volunteer to participate.

The purpose of the drill is to demonstrate that the health department can rapidly dispense antibiotics to the public in the event of an anthrax bioterrorism emergency.

To demonstrate our capability, we ask that volunteers register online at www.health.ny.gov/Go2Clinic by clicking on Westchester and following the prompts. You can also call (914) 995-7425.

Residents, including parents with young children and people with disabilities are invited to join us. Please note that no actual medicine will be dispensed. We will be expected to “dispense” medication to 500 people during the 90-minute drill, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked.

Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.
